Hey, this is Alex. Thanks for clicking and welcome to this lesson on the word get. Now,

this is a user requested lesson. This was requested by Nikolai. So Nikolai, pay attention.

I know you have some problems with this one. Now, we are not going to talk about get as

it's used with phrasal verbs like get in, get out, get around. Just the various meanings

of the word get itself when it's used on its own in the present tense, in the past tense

and in the future tense. So we have three sentences on the board, three different ways

that we can use get. So the first sentence says, "She gets a lot of money for her birthday."

Okay, so one way that we can use get is when we acquire something or when we receive something.

Okay? And the second sentence is actually similar in this case, except instead of get,

I'm using the past tense. I'm saying got. She got a good grade on her test. So for these

two examples, get means something close to acquiring something or receiving something.

Okay? So to get something is to acquire or receive. So, for example, you can say, "I

got a car from my parents." You can also say, "So she gets a lot of money for her birthday."

She often gets, okay, if we're going with this one, she often gets good grades on her

test. So she often gets them from other people, acquires them or receives them from other

people. Other people give her good grades. In this final example, we have a different

meaning of the word get. So first of all, I'm using the future tense, she will get.

She will get angry if she doesn't get into college. I also use get into the phrasal verb

in this case. Okay? So what does it mean that she will get angry if she doesn't get into

college? In this case, get is just a substitute for she will become angry. Okay? So if you

follow get with an emotion, okay, it means that you become that, essentially. So, she

will get angry means to become angry. So you can also say, "She will become angry if she

doesn't get into college," just like you can say, "She will get angry if she doesn't get

into college." Now, keep in mind that you can use the present, the past, and the future

for all of these different ways of using get. Okay? So, again, you can, for example, if

I say, "She gets a lot of money for her birthday," we can also say, "She got a lot of money for

her birthday. She received it." We can also say, "She will get a lot of money for her

birthday in the future." Same with this. "She got a good grade on her test." She received

a good grade on her test. "She gets good grades on her test." Now, that is something that

is always true. And finally, you can also say, "She will get a good grade on her test

if she studies." Right? And for the final one, "She will get angry if she doesn't get

into college." "She got angry because she didn't get into college." "She became angry

because she didn't get into college." "She will get angry if she doesn't get into college."

"She gets angry..." You can't really use this one in the present so much because it doesn't

make too much sense to say, "She gets angry when she doesn't get into college." No, maybe

"She gets angry when she doesn't get what she wants." Okay? Now, if you give me one

moment, we are going to move on to how to use "get" with "get used to." Be right back.

Okay, now we're going to talk about "get used to." So, those of you who go to the EngVid

site regularly know that we have done lessons on being used to something. Okay? So, first

of all, we have to know what "be used to" means. So, here's an example, an example story

that I have here. It says, "In 2009, I moved to London. I was not used to driving on the

left." Now, what does this mean? Again, this is "be used to." "Was not used to" means that

I was not familiar with or I was not comfortable with driving on the left. It was something

that was new for me. Okay? So, driving on the left was new, so I was not comfortable

with it. I was not familiar with it. I was not used to it. So, we looked at "got," and

one of the meanings and uses of "got" is that it means "to become." Right? So, "She got

angry." Okay? And Nikolai, I remember, mentioned, he wrote, "She got heavy. She became heavy."

Okay? So, in this case, "got used to." "I got used to driving on the left. After some

time, I became comfortable, I became familiar with driving on the left." So, I got used

to it. And now, you would say, "Today, I am used to driving on the left. I am comfortable

with, I am familiar with driving on the left." It is not new for me. Okay? So, to get used

to something means to become comfortable with it or become familiar with it. Now, if you
