Speaking English - Irregular Plural Nouns

Hey guys, I'm Alex, thanks for clicking, and welcome to this quick lesson on irregular

plural nouns.

Okay, so we know in English, most of the time, if we have one of something, you know, we

just say the noun, like for example, one marker, right?

If we want to make it plural, if you want to say two or more, we just add an S, so for

example, two markers, or one hand, two hands, one eye, two eyes, right?

Just S-S-S-S.

However, there are some nouns in English that do not follow this plural S rule, and today

we're going to look at some of them, okay?

So singular, and if you know some of these, great.

If you don't know them, that's what you're here for, and even if you do know them, we're

going to practice some pronunciation today as well.

So we have man, right?

One man, two, not mans, but two men, with an E sound.

One man, two men, okay?

One woman, two women, women, okay?

One child, two children.

We don't say childs, I have heard many students say two childs, it's children.

One person, two people, not persons, but people.

One foot, right?

You walk with your feet, well, there you go, feet.

Not two foots, but two feet.

One tooth, okay, and two teeth, teeth.

One tooth, two teeth.

One fish, two fishes, nope, fish is one fish, two fish.

Now you can say fishes if you're talking about different species of fish, okay?

But most of the time we just say two fish or some fish, et cetera.

One leaf, so you can find a leaf on a tree, right, like this is a terrible picture of

a leaf.

Okay, so that's a leaf, for those who don't know, and we say two, not leafs, but leaves,

with a V sound.

Unless you live in Toronto and you cheer for the hockey team, the Maple Leafs, which is

incorrect, okay, on many levels.

We have knife, and knife follows the same rule as leaf, so for plural we say knives,

with a V sound, knives, two knives.

And finally we have a mouse, a little creature.

We say one mouse, two mice, mice.

Okay, now that we have all of these on the board, let's just do some pronunciation practice,

guys.

So just listen and repeat, all right?

Man, men, woman, women, child, children, person, people, foot, feet, tooth, teeth, fish, fish,

fish, leaf, leaves, knife, knives, mouse, mice, perfect.
