Business English Phrases Containing “GLASS”

hello and welcome to number 18 of 25

bite-sized lessons which I'm making

especially for you because it's

Christmas

my name is Anna and today's lesson is

all about the word the glass now glass is

a transparent material and we look

through it so you'll see glass in the

windows but glass is also used for many

other things so the glass is used to

make a container which we handily call a

glass cheers bubbley we also

referred to spectacles as glasses so

wearing a pair of glasses so if you have

bad eyesight you might wear glasses and

you drink out of your glass while

looking out of the glass window now the

reason I chose the word glass is because

there are a few phrases that involve the

word glass that you might not know they

are as follows

glass half empty or glass-half-full this

refers to how optimistic or pessimistic

you are about the world and about life

so if you're a glass-half-full type of

person you look at the glass half full

and say yay it's half full

I'm optimistic about life I see things

in a good way but if you are a

glass-half-empty kind of person you

won't look at the full half of the glass

but the empty part of the glass and say

oh this glass is half empty this mean

you're pessimistic and negative you see

the negative things in life so are you a

glass half-full or glass-half-empty kind

of person?

you might hear is people who live in

glass houses shouldn't throw stones

this means that if you can't take

criticism

then you shouldn't throw criticism at

other people so if you can't take a

stone being thrown at your glasshouse

because your glasshouse would break then

you shouldn't throw stones at anybody

else so people who live in glass houses

shouldn't throw stones if anyone refers

to themselves or somebody else as being

made of glass

this would suggest that they're

vulnerable so i might say the opposite i

might say hey come on I'm not made of

glass

meaning I'm strong I'm not brittle I'm

not likely to break you can knock me you

can put me down you can leave me nasty

comments and give me a thumbs down but

I'm not made of glass

I'm stronger than that and finally if

you ever hear the phrase rose-tinted

glasses

this means to have a very positive view

of whatever you're looking at so i might

be wearing rose-tinted glasses when I

look at the world and the life around me

it means i only see the good in the

world and the people around me I choose

not to see the negative i'm looking at

the world with rose-tinted glasses
