Native English Vocabulary Test: How Well Do You Know These Words?

I think we are we'll see hope everyone is  doing well I'm recovering from a bit of a  

sickness uh but I'm feeling pretty good so I  thought I would make a video uh today and it  

looks like we should be going live hopefully  come on YouTube always takes a little bit to  

get started uh but I am Drew Badger the founder  of Englishanyone.com and the English fluency  

guide welcome to another live video here on  YouTube today I thought I would talk about or  

kind of give a little bit of a quiz a little  bit of a test just to prove a point about uh  

learning English uh and especially getting fluent  uh because usually what happens make sure this is  

working okay this is working uh so usually what  happens is people know the language well enough  

to understand things and recognize things but  they often uh still have trouble communicating  

fluently so nice to see everybody there do click  the like button I know the video just started  

but uh it's going to be good it will be worth  it it will also tell YouTube to inform other

people all right looking pretty good yeah  it's been a while or it feels like a while  

I guess cuz I missed uh doing a video last  week but nice to see everybody I will go  

through this quickly at the beginning and  then I will keep my eye on uh on comments  

and answer anything uh if you have any specific  questions about these words as I go over them uh  

let me know again I will be watching the comments  but if you have other questions about unrelated  

things I will save those into the end all right  uh so again the part of the reason I wanted to  

make this video uh is because I will often  hear uh hear questions from Learners about

again pardon me I still have a cold here uh  but I will hear questions from Learners about  

not understanding natives or uh I will hear from  Learners saying that they uh they want to have a  

like a personal teacher correct their speech all  the time uh and part of the reason this is helpful  

obviously is you get feedback but a drawback or  a difficulty of it is that you're only getting  

exposure to one teacher so rather than having  like you know one person uh that can teach you  

the language you really need exposure to lots of  different examples of different speakers so you  

need to hear fast speakers and slow speakers and  difficult to understand accents all of that if you  

want to really understand Natives and express  yourself more naturally so it's really all of  

those examples that work together to make you uh  a more fluent speaker and the same thing works for  

vocabulary so what I wanted to talk about today uh  this idea came to me when my younger daughter Noel  

was watching some TV show uh and they use the word  that black doesn't work well uh they use the word

behind and you probably know what this means  it's a pretty simple basic word to be behind  

something uh like my uh just put this marker from  your perspective I put the marker behind my hand  

so I have the marker in front of my hand and the  markers is behind my hand as well so this is just  

one uh one use or one context where you might  hear the word and so often when Learners hear a  

word and they get a definition or a translation  they think they know the word but then they are  

surprised when they hear the word used in  different ways in real communication which  

happens quite a lot uh so today I wanted to  give kind of a quiz about this but it's really  

more just showing you how words can have  multiple meanings and instead of trying to  

stop learning when you think you know a word  because you know one definition or one usage  

of it you should really go deeper to eliminate  any doubt you have about the word that way you  

won't be surprised in conversations you should  really be knowing words so you can understand  

them like natives you don't need to know every  single definition or every usage but when you  

really understand a word well you can recognize  what it means even if you hear hear it in new  

ways if that makes sense so in the TV show this  was not just an example of like something being  

behind like the marker being behind my hand  or my hand being behind the Whiteboard here  

uh the the talk the the the example in uh in  my daughter's uh it was like a like a cartoon I  

think I don't know the name of the show uh but  it was talking about like like the evil being

behind uh I think it was like the evil behind this  action or something like that I don't remember the  

exact quote uh but here we we we can see how  like understanding the word behind like the  

marker is behind my hand so the marker is in front  of my hand from your perspective it's in front of  

my hand and it's behind my hand we can also talk  about it in a more figurative way uh like someone  

is behind something else so I can be like  like there could be like a figurative way  

of understanding this where like the there's  like some evil plot or evil thing or evil action  

happening so who is behind this who is like the  person who is creating this thing uh in the same  

way that you have like a person behind a curtain  so this is a very common usage of the word behind  

and again the point is not to just memorize all of  these it's to get a bunch of of different examples  

just like you should hear a bunch of different  natives saying the same thing or hearing a bunch  

of different ways of expressing the same idea so  all of these things work together to create a like  

a web or a network in your mind that really helps  you use things uh fluently so mesha has another  

excellent example who's behind the conspiracy  that same thing so behind it doesn't also like  

or doesn't only need to mean uh like something  negative like that I could also behind something  

else like I'm like you know doing some good things  uh in the community but people don't know it like  

I'm just giving free money to people and they  don't know where the money is coming from like I'm  

behind that like it's my idea I can also be behind  someone like I'm supporting that person so you  

might hear like a group of uh troops or a group of  soldiers in an army and they all say like General  

we're behind you like we will uh support you so  again these are different meanings or different  

uses of the word behind and so you get a kind of  uh Network that forms as you hear these different  

examples uh and see how they connect with one  another so it's not just hearing one and learning  

that through a definition that gets you fluent  it's hearing all of them together all in English  

that really help you understand the vocabulary  Isn't that cool so as you get more examples you  

spend a little bit more time when you hear new  examples of behind you won't be be surprised  

about those because you don't just know one  definition you have a a pretty good idea of what  

I might call the core meaning of the word so to  support something or to be behind it in some way  

physically or figuratively okay so that's the word  behind let me know if you have any questions about  

this word or if you have maybe some other examples  I could think of others but I don't want to spend  

too much time on this one word but this is why  I wanted to do that so I was explaining this  

to my daughter uh and she got the idea of like oh  like she knows what behind means like in front of  

and behind uh but she can also get a a better  example of like there's some bad person like  

you know hiding behind this or working behind the  scenes you will see this a lot like to be [Music]

behind to behind uh to be behind the scenes  so the scenes like this can be a physical  

thing like you're at a a theater or a play  and you have uh like people in back of the  

the stage where they're working on things or  before they come out onto the stage they are  

behind the scenes but you can also talk about  that figuratively in any context like uh maybe  

I I work at a company and I am like the public  person who does speaking for that company but  

many people work behind the scenes or behind  the camera something like that so they're  

not like they're not the the person out front  that you can see but they're still supporting  

that thing in some way so they are behind the  scenes one last example I'll give you is to be

behind behind the times to be behind the times yes  to be behind the victory so who is responsible for  

something who is behind this so what does it  mean to be behind the times does anybody know  

what that means have you heard this before would  you know what that means if a native used that in  

a conversation oh that person is a little bit  behind the times behind the times as you get a  

bunch of different examples of behind what do you  think it might mean behind the times so often you  

you'll be in a so mes says no idea oh I'm I've  stumped mukes and he knows quite a lot to be  

behind the times I try to think about it like this  like here's uh we'll just draw a little timeline  

up here so here's now like today the future uh  so 2025 so the current times we can talk about  

when it is like like now is like the the times  in general it it it's kind of referring to now  

what's happening so to be behind the times like  it means maybe you're wearing fashion that's out  

of date so maybe you like to dress in clothes  from I don't know 1980 or something like that  

so you're behind the times if you have older  thinking or older ideas or older fashion or  

older ways of doing something something like that  so if lots of people are using computers now but  

maybe you still like using I don't know like a uh  like an abacus or something so an abacus that's  

that little it's like a bunch of little beads  on little string kind of things so if you're  

using old equipment or something that it could be  outdated so you could you could describe a person  

as being behind the times or you could talk  about an institution like the government is  

behind the times it's not really late it's more  like outdated so you are doing something uh kind  

of from an earlier time uh in this time so you are  behind the current time that's what it means so  

you're behind the times so someone who wears older  fashioned or does things that are out of date or  

maybe they don't work so well anymore but people  are comfortable doing them they are behind the  

times so there actually quite a few Expressions  about this but hopefully as you see all of  

these different examples the point is not to even  memorize one example or even memorize all of these  

examples it's as you hear these different examples  it's the examples together that really helps you  

understand the word so that if you hear new things  like you learn some new thing in a conversation  

it's much easier to integrate that and understand  that uh and feel confident about using it does  

that make sense all right so uh again this is the  reason I thought I would do this video I wanted to  

cover a few more words but let me know if you have  any questions about this um it's not a uh like a  

difficult idea someone is asking about have hat  I've already made videos about this you can just  

search my channel for that um but I I have look  for the video about have I think uh that that that  

talks about that we also go into these uh things  in much more detail influent for life all right uh  

so let's erase the board if you have any questions  about this word or this idea of trying to  

understand different meanings uh and this is one  way of clearing doubt that stops you from speaking  

so you can have lots of doubts about pronunciation  or grammar or vocabulary anything uh but this is  

one way to prepare yourself for conversations even  before you speak all right so let's erase this  

let's see what do we want to cover next all right  we'll do a couple more make sure YouTube is still

working all right the opposite of behind so  the opposite of behind could be in front of  

but it depends on the situation so I could be  in front of someone else uh but I could also  

be like forward rather than behind or in back of  so often it's it's not just a when you're trying  

to learn opposite words sometimes you might have  an opposite word uh in the the same context like  

in front of and behind but maybe if you use  behind the times uh like an opposite of that  

would be like Forward Thinking Forward Thinking  so you're thinking about the future and you're  

maybe doing things that other people are not  doing yet so you're more of a Forward Thinking  

kind of person so again the point is not to just  memorize definitions but get lots of examples all  

right Mo said below the belt yes below the below  the belt that's a term from boxing as interesting  

you're bringing that up but uh that's a another  um another example of like you hear a word like  

below you can have above something and and Below  something as well and you can have a belt like a  

boxing a boxing belt you don't want to hit people  below the belt that's a kind of a bad thing for  

people to do see if I missed anything the opposite  of behind is in front of yeah so it depends on the  

uh situation all right uh let's look at another  word like crash uh and so when you have something  

like crash this could mean a couple of different  things but again thinking about our little Network  

building a deeper understanding of a word by  getting more examples this naturally varied review  

uh of the vocabulary will help you understand it  better and help you be prepared for new examples  

uh when you're here so crash and Clash are two  different things crash is usually like you can  

think about two cars coming together something  breaking or two like symbols crashing together  

like that so it's typically a faster movement  it could cause some some energy or sound or  

something uh maybe it makes a lot of a lot of  noise or there's an explosion so you could have  

a crash or it's just a sudden movement of some  kind so we have the physical like a car crash

example uh but we can also  have something like a stock  

market crash or a crash like a market [Music]

crash so a market crash the same kind of idea  where maybe the the price of something is going  

up and down and then boom it just drops completely  like that this is a crash right here so on this  

day there was a big crash in the market or a crash  for a particular thing all right so again we've  

got a car crash a market crash you can see how  something happens there's like a dramatic event  

that happens as a result of something like maybe  there's some news about a company a crash course  

on phrasal verbs very good so another thing a  crash course so let's say uh my town is being  

invaded by aliens and the the government is giving  all the people in the area guns and I don't know  

how to use a gun so I need a quick crash course  in something to to like learn how to fire guns  

very quickly so I get like a 5 minute lesson  in how to fire guns I don't take a whole month  

of training and get proper safety lessons and  lots of examples and trials and practice that  

kind of thing it's just a crash course so I need  to get some very quick examples of something uh  

so I can learn it very quickly so I might have  a crash course in a language if I'm going on a  

business trip and need to know a few phrases for  communication something like that a crash course  

all right pretty interesting though right so as  you see these different examples there's there's  

some overlap there yes you could crash out on  the sofa like I could I could maybe be eating  

a lot of sugar or having a lot of energy kind of  the same idea as a uh like a stock market right  

now so you have some stability and then you have  something happens where everything is just oh no  

we have a a huge problem now something like  that or in a similar way I could crash like  

to crash just like physically crash because I'm  so tired so I've been working hard all day just  

like the stock market here and then I get home and  I just crash on the couch all right so you could  

say crash or crash out as a phrasal ver both of  those are fine uh but it's the same idea so you  

have a stock market crash or I crash because I'm  so uh exhausted my body is just crashing all right  

so a computer could crash in the same same way  the computer is working just fine and then oh  

no something happened with it my computer crashed  all right boy said I have taken a course called  

visual guide to phrasal verbs by you and that  really helped me become better at speaking glad  

to hear it that's great yeah the idea hopefully  uh is that you now understand those phrasal verbs  

more like a native so you just the same way that  we're looking at vocabulary here you erase any  

doubts you have about using them so you feel more  confident it's really either you have doubt about  

something or you are feeling confident about  it and so if we can erase the doubts that  

stop you from speaking you naturally become a  better speaker so I'm I'm glad to hear that's

below this video all right mes says yes the  data crash computer crash the same thing uh

this is our pronunciation app which will also  teach you lots of vocabulary but it works in the  

same way you get many different examples uh of  vocabulary meanings by using images rather than  

just getting one translation or a definition all  right let's keep going I think people get the idea  

uh so again crash it's pretty simple word but uh  you can always uh go a little bit deeper and you  

don't have to learn every usage of a word but the  more you get the more confident you feel so when  

you hear new things like oh there was a crash ah  now I understand like something else will uh like  

something intense has happened or dramatic or  something when I hear the word crash even if I  

don't know exactly what it means all right look at  Moyes all right all right he's got uh Frederick as

well all right next word what  else did I want to cover today

oh lift lift so let me take this marker and just  uh raise it up to lift the marker like that to  

raise something or to lift it so the British uh  word for elevator is lift so to take the lift in  

America we just say elevator but the British  word is to take the lift uh but we can also  

so just like we can lift something like that we  can uh like give or give Excuse me give someone

a lift so to give someone a lift means like  it's almost like you're picking them up and  

taking them to a physical you know in a physical  way carrying them to some place but often this  

is like giving a ride in a car to a friend  of yours so a friend of mine gave me a lift  

to the party meaning they took me in their car  or they gave me a ride uh something like that  

so even though we're not physically picking the  person up we can use the expression in the same  

way so to give someone uh a lift now we can  also in a similar figurative way we can talk  

about something giving you a lift or giving you  like a boost is another similar word where we're  

we're raising or elevating something uh so if  I give you a lift like I raise your spirits a  

little bit like lift your lift your spirits  lift so lift your mood or lift your spirit

so to lift your spirits means to make you feel  better to lift your spirits make you feel better  

uh looks like we had a quick question what is a  phrasal verb from zzip a phrasal verb is a more  

conversational way of expressing a more advanced  verb or idea in English so example uh maybe we  

can talk about like standing up or sitting  down or or balling up something like that  

typically we take a uh a verb and a preposition  and combine them together and this is why uh like  

typically native children are using these because  you can express a lot of different ideas with a  

few words combined in different ways so lift up  you could also lift up something again that's  

another physical use of that but the point is you  can lift something like uh I took some medicine  

today and it it like lifted my lifted my spirits a  little bit it lifted me up I could also be lifted  

up spiritually that's where we get the same idea  of like lifting someone's Spirits by making them  

feel better so if you have a friend who's sad  uh maybe you take them to I don't know go get  

some ice cream or something like that uh to lift  them up a little bit okay so you could lift up  

lift up their confidence lift up their mood lift  up their Spirit the same kind of thing all right  

you get the idea so one of the the core ideas from  this video is that typically when we hear a word  

like this there's often a physical use of it and  then there are more figurative uses as well so  

even if you're not physically carrying something  like I'm lifting up this marker uh I could be  

like lifting up someone else like hopefully I'm  lifting up your ability to communicate so lift up  

means to feel better it's more like like lifting  someone up it could be making them feel better  

it could be um it could be like uh again it could  be like like like physically if you have a like a  

medical problem you could lift someone up or you  could lift up their confidence or lift up their  

Spirits if they're feeling bad or whatever there  are lots of different ways you can do that but the  

point is it's a very useful word for talking  about uh not just physically moving something  

but uh anything where we're trying to raise it  in some way to lift that thing up okay see if  

I had anything else I wanted to uh I'll mention  one more example about this I'll put it up here  

to lift and this is a bit more uh Advanced  example so to lift up is to cheer up yeah  

that's a basic idea but again it could  be like lifting up someone's mood or  

lifting up their confidence or lifting up  uh anything else like that so you could also

lift to lift restrictions to lift restrictions  so to lift restrictions you can think about the  

government maybe they have a law that says  you can't do this or you can't go there  

but if they stop that they have lifted those  restrictions so they're like not not imposing  

that or putting that on people anymore they  have lifted those or they have removed those  

so this is another common way you will hear uh  when when laws are changed often like a thing  

might be lifted or uh there was something in  place but now it's gone or it expired or the  

government took it away they lifted the  restrictions they lifted the restrictions  

all right so a lot of good uses of the word  lift there and as you hear all of these uh  

and especially not just hearing them only from  me but as you hear them from other examples or  

other speakers uh you will feel even more  confident about using it because your doubt  

about the word will disappear pretty cool all  right let us continue I think we have maybe  

two words left I I'm still I need I need maybe  like a good a good meal to to lift my lift my  

condition up today because I'm not feeling so well  still I had the flu I think it was pretty bad uh  

but hopefully uh I can I can stay with you guys  and stay strong uh to finish up this video uh all  

right another interesting word uh you will hear  this quite frequently but I don't really hear this  

used in in lessons so often so I thought I would  use it here to give you some more examples St Str  

e t c h to stretch something to stretch I don't  really have a good example of something actually  

I kind of do here I'll take a I have a little wet  towel little wet sheet over here I could take this  

and pull it and stretch it out this one doesn't  doesn't really stretch so well but if I have a  

rubber band or something I can easily stretch  that thing uh so I can extend it in some way  

to stretch uh from one thing to something else can  you think of some examples where you've heard this  

word used I'll see if we can get uh a couple  of different people maybe they have different  

examples of how they've heard this word used in  different ways can you think of anything uh let's  

see Diego says I'm from Brazil I would like you  to teach me some techniques so I can develop my  

ability to speak English uh because my Speak  doesn't work out uh just click on the link in

link in the description so that covers everything  we talked talk about how to learn uh the program  

is basically like the old way of learning would  be for example you uh if I if I can give I I'll  

pause this uh little quick lesson about stretch  right quick but like let's just contrast here so  

the old way of learning vocabulary for example  uh is you get a translation uh or a definition  

and then maybe you try to review that thing with  some flashcards or something uh but you don't  

really feel very confident about the word so the  new way is like what we're doing here where you  

get lots of different examples of the vocabulary  so you really understand it and you understand it  

all in English the point of this is to remove  the doubt that stops you from speaking and you  

could have doubts about pronunciation or grammar  or whatever but if we can remove all those doubts  

then you speak so when people are talking about  techniques this is one of them uh so yes we'll  

we'll get back to the lesson though but that's  the basic idea so when people are they the tricky  

thing about fluency is uh that there there there  many different pieces of it like like you could  

you could understand but maybe not speak very well  uh and and often like people will either focus on  

the wrong thing or they they'll like try to learn  more words when the problem isn't how many words  

they know it's the doubt they have about the words  they already know so learning more words probably  

isn't going to help you speak better um but if you  understand all of the different ways that people  

normally teach um and then just think like oh okay  this is kind of the old way of doing things but it  

causes me doubt uh instead we want to eliminate  the doubt we want to we want to get clarity about  

the language so we feel very confident uh using it  anyway that's the basic idea so let's get back to  

stretch uh but if you'd like to learn more about  that you can click on the link in the description  

to learn more about fluent for life so to stretch  something again like a rubber band you can think  

about pulling it in some way and you might hear  an expression like whoops that's a stretch so when  

something is a stretch like an idea seems like  a stretch it's like maybe you're using uh like  

an analogy to to say one thing uh and connect that  to something else but maybe the connection doesn't  

work perfectly or I'm trying try to do something  like like I want someone to try to believe me and  

I'm telling them a story like yesterday I caught  this like really big shark I can't even fit fit  

the size of it in this in this camera frame here  uh but I was swimming in the ocean and I caught  

this like really big shark with my bare hands and  so people like yeah that sounds like a stretch  

like it sounds like I'm kind of stretching the  truth a little bit so I'm taking something maybe  

I actually caught a tiny fish and I really did  do that that but I'm stretching that into a story  

about catching a really big shark with my bare  hands so uh when you hear something like that's  

a stretch it sounds like it's kind of unbelievable  so yes mukes has it like to stretch the truth in  

some way so there might be some truth or something  accurate about what you're saying but you're  

changing it or extending it or you're stretching  the truth you're stretching things uh maybe to fit  

a situation in a similar way to stretch something  so again we've got the physical like I'm going  

to stretch my body over here but we can also  stretch other things like the truth uh if you  

can think of anything else let me check comments  here make sure I didn't miss anybody uh let's  

see you can stretch your body right yes that you  certainly can and what is the difference between  

an American Australian accent well it's just the  The Sounds we use and the words we use that's it  

so you really should just listen to different  people like listening to an American speak and  

an Australian speak and if you can compare them  you will learn both accents or actually there  

are many different accents within the countries uh  but the more you listen to that then the more you  

will understand those people and and be able to  learn uh a lot from all kinds of English speakers  

this is exactly what we do in fluent for life and  that's why we have British speakers and American  

speakers Australian speakers New Zealand speakers  as well Welling to says dude you're an amazing  

teacher thanks for result it's my pleasure Maria  ice to see you from Texas Miriam can we use the  

term stretch in your meaning to open more open  your mind yes that's another good example to

stretch your mind your mind to  stretch your mind so to stretch  

your mind to to open your mind to  new ideas or to think about things  

in different ways to stretch your uh  stretch your mind another good example

uh let's see stretch your mind after reading a  book yep so to stretch your mind stretch your  

legs so that's another example like to go for  a walk I need to stretch my legs a little bit  

just like after uh sitting in an airplane for a  while I need to stretch my legs that's another  

common example a physical example of stretch  but the same idea Moyes says a dialogue from  

web series called Better Call Saul that  goes like this don't you think that's a  

bit of a stretch or something yeah so it would  it would be don't you think that is a bit of a  

stretch referring to an exaggerated like  an exaggerated clam yeah but that that's  

that's basically what it be what it would  be very good T9 says I'm anxious to start  

your course man I'm going to start in March  thank you for the class it's my pleasure glad  

to hear all right uh so you would like typically  we would talk about like stretch like stretching

out so stretch out this is probably the most  common common use of uh stretch out or or  

using stretch as a phrasal verb to stretch out  where we're we're talking about expanding into  

different places like I could be sitting on a  couch and and like stretching out my body or  

stretching out my legs extending them that way to  stretch out uh let's see and Kami says I want to  

know I want to know how to use a fit all right  another good example uh well here we can just  

uh we can maybe finish with stretch do I have  anything else for that yeah those are basically  

all all good examples that that you've given as  well uh but a quick thing about fit so another  

thing remember people look at this and think okay  that's a a simple word I understand how to use it  

but it could fit in different situations so it  could go it could be appropriate for different  

places like this cap fits in here or like this  marker fits in this cap to fit in a particular  

place place it means it's appropriate kind of  going from this thing here or I could say like  

this this shirt fits me if the shirt is like  really really tight or really really loose it  

doesn't fit me very well so it doesn't suit me  it's not appropriate it's not the right size  

physically or even figuratively like I could talk  about like I don't know a religion or a like a way  

of thinking something like ah that that doesn't  really fit me very well like I'm not suited uh for  

some ideas or some ways of thinking same thing  like that so again as you get more examples so  

what kind of fit like I could fit uh like fit  one thing into something else physically uh  

or I could be like a fit in a team so I fit well  with the other people uh and then there's also the  

the meaning of fit where we're talking about like  physical fitness like I'm like I'm fit I'm in in  

good shape so I'm I don't know physically strong  or whatever so that's slightly different meaning  

of fit but again this is why um when when Learners  are trying to understand vocabulary they often get  

a definition or a translation but vocabulary  really means something in a situation so when  

people say what does fit mean I say well depends  on the situation so are you talking about physical  

fitness are you talking about something like this  marker fitting in the cap so I could have a giant  

cap and it's it's too big for the marker but this  one fits perfectly it's a perfect fit a perfect  

fit so this cap is designed for this marker it's  a perfect fit for the marker okay so remember that  

this is why it's so important not to just get a  translation of a word and try to memorize that  

as you get more examples this will also help you  understand it like a native speaker so you use it  

like a native speaker all right works pretty well  right all right uh do I fit well in this class yes  

Tom another good example all right uh and  we'll do one last one here again I want to  

save my voice I could go on and on with lots  of different words but you all get the idea I

think and so the last example we'll cover

is score score let me get a drink uh  as I let you think about that can you  

think of some uses of score I'm sure  you know about scoring points scoring

points to score points what else could you score  score a goal uhhuh another example to score a

goal anything else you ever heard this used in a  conversation or a movie talking about maybe the  

Big Score anytime you're you're scoring uh  anything like you it just means you're like  

obtaining that somehow uh often uh like a big  score like I go out fishing just using fishing  

as another example uh I could I I like win a  lot or I I catch like a really big fish it was  

like you know like a really big score so either  I caught a really big fish or I caught many fish  

something like that but it was a big thing or if  I'm a criminal like a bank robber and I'm going  

out and I I had like a really big score today  where I I stole a lot of cars or jewelry or  

something like that to score all right uh so this  is the Big Score you could also talk about like a  

big score in the same way so you have like a big  a big score like I've done that thing and this is  

again different maybe you probably know the uh  like another meaning of score like to to take  

some paper and you and you kind of score a line  through it and fold it in a in a in a different  

way it's kind of putting that line in there but  that's a different usage of the word score all  

right so again a tricky thing about this as you  start looking at different examples of words you  

will learn deeper and more interesting examples of  particular words but you will also hear how things  

are used with completely different meanings all  right so it's another good reason why we want  

to get lots of examples but it will help us uh  the kind of bigger picture of a word you might  

have a meaning and some other examples like this  but then there's a different meaning over here  

in these other examples and sometimes they are  connected sometimes they are not like the word  

uh trunk which I often give uh so you could have  the trunk of your body or the trunk of a tree or  

the the trunk like a like a chest where you're  traveling so a large uh box like this like a  

travel travel trunk so like many years ago people  would take these big boxes when they go traveling  

this would be a trunk that you travel with so it's  a different meaning of the word than the trunk of  

a tree like the base of a tree anyway uh this is  why it's a good example or a good reason uh to get  

lots of examples when you're learning vocabulary  the trunk of a car yes another good example that  

doesn't mean anything but like in relation to the  trunk of a tree but yeah very good all right uh  

let's see if I missed anybody all right love says  in December I started my journey with fluent for  

Life glad to hear it welcome to the program I  will be done with visual guide phrasal verbs  

next what should I choose and how do I know if  I've understood everything uh well the way the  

program works is you can choose any lesson set  you like because they're all at the same level  

the point is not to like infinitely get more  difficult with the language it's just to keep  

getting deeper uh so you can talk about more  things fluently and confidently so you can pick  

whatever you're interested in you could even  pick a lesson set like maybe if you're if you  

want to continue with more phrasal verbs and see  how those are used in more conversational ways uh  

like a good ex what's a good set for that there  are like a few different ones where we talk a lot  

about phrasal verbs but I think the man's scaping  I think the manscaping uh lesson set is a really  

good one for phrasal verbs if you're interested  in that specifically but you can pick anything  

you're interested in like a particular topic what  the speakers are talking about or it could be a  

grammar point or kind of vocabulary that's used  whatever you're interested in uh just focus on  

that and as you get more examples you will know  you're improving but a thing I recommend people  

do when they start learning with the program  is if you pick a lesson set just to to compare  

uh how much better you understand and how more  uh how much uh more confident you feel as you  

go through it by erasing your doubt uh you pick a  lesson set and you watch the uh the conversation  

lesson first so that you you shouldn't learn  it in that way but this is just a way to kind  

of prepare and see the difference in how much more  you understand so you watch the conversation video  

first and then go back uh and go through that  particular lesson set and then when you go to  

the conversation again you'll understand a lot  more and you will think wow like I'm actually  

improving uh I feel less doubt about this and  more confidence so you'll you'll see how it's  

improving and as you continue to go through more  lesson sets it will build and and the whole thing  

becomes stronger over time so it's it's basically  like how natives learn the language but it's just  

much more efficient because uh we can take the  kind of moments the AHA moments you get when you  

understand things and we can put a lot of them  together in a small period of time all right but

in that English course yeah you can talk about  scoring that well Julian says a scorecard what is  

the score yep same thing so you can talk about the  score like the actual numbers in a sporting match  

or you could talk about like what's happening in  a uh you know like a business meeting as well like  

what's the score on this deal or something like  what's happening with it so what what we want to  

know what's what's going on or what's some kind  of news about it uh let's see Kurt says how can  

I get better to improve my English level I have to  go abroad to study my bachelor degree in a foreign  

country but I don't have enough confidence to  communicate with other International students  

that's what we do influent for life so again  instead of the typical things people do where  

they try to work with a personal teacher uh and  again it's it's a a good idea if you can have a  

personal teacher but often a personal teacher  will give you kind of slower clear English and  

they're not preparing you for all of the variety  like even if you learned with me personally when  

you travel to a different country and you meet  lots of other International students they're all  

going to speak differently so it's much better  idea to to learn that way with lots of different  

examples and then you will be much more prepared  when you meet those same speakers uh or like a  

different range of speakers in real life so that's  how you prepare for that and feel confident before  

you speak love says uh suppose I get something  in the street I might might say score yep you  

could say that's right well score you could  just use it like as an exclamation point like  

that score like yes I did it very good yes like  I scored something yes your academic transcript  

scores that's another example of score and there  are even other other uses of score like I talked  

about scoring paper or even like four score and 20  years ago or whatever like that's like a length of  

time it's a different idea about it uh let's see  and then K 3 I KO says teacher Drew always gives  

us lessons for long hours at a stretch that's  right another good example of that welcome Koo  

oh is that oh is that oh I see that that's  what that is ah you you changed your name I  

guess look at that but Tom's Tom's on the case  Tom Tom knows what's going on so he says learn  

deeper yes so it's it's knowing the language  better and that's how you feel more confident  

about speaking because your doubts about using the  language disappear all right hi hi so happy to be  

live again look at that malagor zata nice to see  you there what is your level of Japanese uh I'm  

conversationally fluent there's lots of Japanese  I don't know but I can I can spend hours I could  

I could go all day without speaking any English  and I could talk with people uh and that's like  

often I don't really spend much time talking  during my day in English or Japanese but I can  

I can go anywhere and and talk with people and  I have no problem doing that like earlier this  

month I had had the O shatu celebration where I'm  like spending time with my family and we're just  

sitting and eating and and drinking and you know  I did that for like many hours during the day and  

so I'm talking with people and trying to make  people laugh and stuff and we're having a good  

time discussing things but it's been interesting  like if you if you had videos of me doing this  

over the years like the first time I did it with  my wife's family uh to now it's like you know  

completely different thing but yeah my Japanese  is uh perfectly fine and the same things that I  

uh teach for learning English these are the  same things I I use for learning Japanese as

well uh let's see yes I'm on the case yeah I  often use that expression to be on the case so  

Julian says the best way to learn English  is by studying subjects in English using  

it as a language of instruction yes you  can do that as well so and again the same  

way you would learn anything in your native  language so if I'm a native Spanish speaker  

and I'm in interest interested in I don't know  whatever I could be interested in some kind  

of sport or learning to build bird houses or  something like that uh that if I do that and  

I learn that in that language I'm going to learn  those things and feel much more confident about  

doing that that's why we uh organize fluent for  life the way we do so the whole point is to get  

lots of varied examples the same way you would but  to do it efficiently if you can get these examples  

very quickly then you will become a fluent speaker  much faster I made a video uh I don't know when  

that was maybe a year ago is that a year ago I  talked about folding uh folding time like how  

quickly like so people often ask how long does it  take to get fluent in English and usually what I  

explain to people is that the the question is not  really how long it takes to get fluent it's how  

quickly can you erase your doubt about vocabulary  and the example I gave uh or often give this was  

one in a video here but let's say I don't know  I was this was like 5 years ago or something  

something just for example so five years ago  five years ago and this is today so 5 years ago  

my uh younger daughter or my older daughter  was in kindergarten uh and she had what was

called a shicky card I'm just going to write it  kind of in English so sh sh s you and again this  

is this is not an English word so this was a  Japanese word we are in Japan she went to a  

Japanese kindergarten and she showed me this  card that had a bunch of stickers on it and  

she said this is my Shi so that the pronunciation  is a little bit different CAD but card is is what  

the word is but I did not know what Shi meant uh  so I heard that 5 years ago and then like 3 years  

later I hear uh Shiki about someone talking about  joining a meeting and they were like I like sh seu  

like to to join or uh attend a meeting and when  I heard that I was able to connect this to that  

and think ah Shi means to attend something like  that that's what it means and so I understood oh  

Shi means attendance card and and the interesting  thing is like it didn't it didn't take 3 years to  

to get lots of examples of this or try to repeat  it after a teacher or something like that I just  

needed to erase any doubt about what the word  meant so I got the examples 3 years apart if I  

got them immediately like the first example and  then the next example right after that I would  

have gotten fluent in that very quickly and I  think oh like now I understand it I feel that aha  

moment of understanding and then I can start using  it all right so for anybody out there uh trying  

get fluent the point is not like spending more  time it's how quickly can you erase the doubt  

that stops you from speaking okay so whatever  the doubt is it could be doubt about vocabulary  

pronunciation anything else but that's how you  get fluent all right uh it looks like we are at  

the end of let's see if I had any more questions  here Moyes says language acquisition is what you  

get here yeah uh I can confidently say that  your method are impeccable and I've have seen  

significant improvement over the last few months  by following your advice glad to hear it Mo and  

it's a pleasure to help you learn all right so  I mean I I don't think I could really explain  

it better than that but that's basically the idea  not to kind of learn individual words and phrases  

but really to understand the language without a  doubt and the great thing about this is just like  

I'm showing you in these videos you don't need to  be living in an English-speaking country you don't  

even need to speak with anyone to do this you can  do all this understand The Language by yourself  

and then when you do speak you will feel much more  comfortable and confident anyway uh that's it for  

today uh look at that I think we've gone almost  an hour looks like 50 minutes on the clock uh  

but hopefully you guys have enjoyed this lesson  this little quiz or test that I've had remember  

uh I've made a video recently talking about the  biggest mistake that I see Learners make and that  

is that they don't erase all of their doubt so  they think they know something like they think  

they know a particular word but when they're in  a conversation and they hear an unfamiliar or  

unexpected use of that word then they get stuck  and so I want to prepare you for that this is  

just one example like hearing an example uh some  vocabulary from a clear teacher like I'm giving  

you here is different than hearing it in the real  world with Blended speech or an unfamiliar accent  

or something like that so I'm trying to be clear  and in uh uh intentionally easy to understand and  

often teachers are like that because they're  trying to help you learn something but it's  

only part of the learning process you still need  to get lots of examples from other natives that  

aren't trying to be clear they don't care if you  understand them or not because maybe some people  

in life don't they don't care if you understand  what they say but uh just remember that the more  

examples you get uh the faster you get fluent the  more aha moments you feel the more confident you  

become and you really can prove to yourself that  this works just keep getting more examples erase  

the doubt and you will feel much more confident  when you speak all right mil go says you are an
