Hello here we go then and it is a rather  nice day it's looking lovely outside  

i wish i felt lovely unfortunately  i am feeling a little unwell today

so it will be interesting to see how  long this live stream lasts for before i  

collapse on the floor

on my face today very nice to see you here  unfortunately i have caught mr steve's cold  

if you remember last sunday steve was feeling  unwell and his voice was sounding very deep  

and sexy well today i have the same problem  i have caught mr steve's cold i've been  

rather unwell for the past two days but i  managed to to pull myself out of my sick bed  

the sick bed is the place where you spend your  moments of illness you go to bed you rest you  

lie down and you take it easy that's what  you normally do you see when you feel unwell  

so that's what i've been doing but today  i got up i walked around and i prepared  

today's live stream how long i will be here  for today is anyone's guess i have no idea  

i might collapse to the floor right now who knows  so anything could happen today you might see me  

choke you might see me sneeze you might see  me blow my nose i have pain here in my throat  

right here i have pain here in my nose i also have  pain in my ears as well so i have pain all around  

this area today as i suffer with my cold it's not  anything else before anyone says mr duncan is it  

something else is it something more serious it  is not although having said that steve yesterday  

went for oh no wait there uh it was monday monday  on monday steve went to have his booster jab  

his oh no wait i'm just trying to  think yes it was his booster jab  

for covid i i only vaguely remember because i  was in bed unconscious so when mr steve came back  

from having his booster for covid well he said  oh i'm not sure if i will be all right or not  

well the next day he was feeling unwell also  although i'm happy to say that he's okay now  

but sometimes when you have vaccinations they  can make you feel a little unwell a little rough  

the next day even the flu jab so a lot of people  these days have flu vaccinations every year  

myself and also mr steve we have ours  because we are now over a certain age  

let's just say which means  that we have to have these  

these special medical checkups and also we have  to have our regular vaccinations as well for flu  

for example so i am not feeling great today so  we will see how long this happens for those who  

are wondering what this is my name is duncan i  talk about english i love english you might say  

that i am an english addict and quite often i  talk about english but today i am going to try  

and talk about english so if i suddenly disappear  don't worry nothing has happened to me but i  

might disappear now and again to to blow my  nose or to have a good cough i am coughing  

a lot and that's because my throat is incredibly  sore so every word every sound that i make today  

is actually causing me pain so every time i  say something i am actually causing myself  

excruciating agony but it's worth it to be  here with you talking of which yes we have made  

it all the way to the middle of  the week because it is wednesday

i'm sorry i can't do the the high  voice today i'm afraid sorry about that

i hope it hasn't ruined your enjoyment too much  of the proceedings today with english addict don't

it's a nice day outside it's not too warm  i will say we are now starting to feel some

to talk about words connected to  being unwell feeling sick so sickness  

or feeling sick can be used in many ways  in fact and we might also talk about  

types of illnesses or maybe the  the way in which you can become ill  

so what about you when was the last time you  felt unwell when was the last time you were  

ill was it a long time ago do you get many fevers  or colds i have one friend i won't name the person  

because i don't want to embarrass them but i have  one friend who always gets colds quite often i  

won't say who it isn't steve but it is someone  else who i know and if you are watching hello

to be honest with you i wonder how many times i'm  going to mention my my sickness today i don't know

turkey i was talking to steve last  week about having the chance to travel

there is one beautiful place where mr steve and  myself stayed in fact we've been there twice  

in the past so one of the places we were  thinking of last week was turkey because in

but not the flu it's not that bad if it was the  flu i wouldn't be standing here in front of my  

camera right now i would be still in bed i  think so but thank you for asking no it isn't  

it is not flu i think it's just  a cold a mild cold hello also to

that is what happens you see if you get  a cold or a fever quite often your voice  

will become deep and dare i say sexy very  nice yes your your voice is very deep  

today it is i'm not sure if it's a good thing or  a bad thing i haven't decided yet but by the way

don't worry i'm still here oh my goodness that  was a bad one by the way for those wondering  

don't worry my house is not on fire there  there is a farmer in one of the fields  

and he is burning some old straw so if you can see  smoke going by behind me don't worry it's not me  

it's not my house that is on fire it is one of  the local farmers who apparently is burning some

very often i don't have illness very  often but when i do it normally gets

quite bad as you can hear right now hello  christina there is so much confusion  

whether to get the vaccine against the flu or  to get the third vaccine against covid well  

to be honest steve for example has had both he  had his flu jab a few days ago and on monday he  

had his third covid jab as well i haven't had  my booster for covid yet because i had mine a  

little bit later than steve but also i haven't  had my flu jab either i haven't had that either

it's nice to have you here even though you are  feeling unwell but i think you should take a break  

to recover well i will have a little break  because tomorrow of course i'm not here and friday  

saturday i think i'm not sure if it's going to  happen but apparently on saturday we are going out  

but i i don't know if i will be i might not  be because i feel terrible at the moment

dangerous with elderly people that is the truth  well i suppose so well with all illnesses i will  

be honest with you with all illnesses every  single illness that exists if you are also  

elderly then you are more at risk of becoming  seriously ill as well so i would agree with you

vitas hello vitas nice to see you here as  well today we've noticed that you rarely  

get sick except for your hay fever that is  true i i do get my my seasonal allergies

during the summer months have my  bottle of water here just in case

i'm still with you don't worry

but yes i normally get hay fever during the  summer as well but that's not really sickness  

that is just something that my body is  allergic to hello tung new in hello to

looking at some words and phrases connected  to being unwell and ill which seems  

appropriate considering today i am  feeling a little bit under the weather

many people have asked me mr duncan what is  the best way to speak english is it with an  

american accent or a british accent i think  this is a very interesting question indeed  

and some might say that it is not easy to answer  but my answer to this question is quite simple  

you use the english you feel the most comfortable  with you don't have to sound like an american when  

you're speaking you don't have to sound like  a british person when you're speaking as long  

as you feel comfortable with the way you use  english that is the most important thing of all  

of course it's also important that the other  person understands what you are saying as  

well so don't worry too much about sounding like  somebody else don't punish yourself by trying to  

copy someone else's way of speaking what you have  to do is develop your own way of using english  

don't forget english is an emotional language  it's a personal language it's a language that  

you use to express the way you feel so don't  worry about sounding like somebody else  

use english as you would your own language  in your own way to express the way you feel  

so you don't have to sound like mr  duncan you don't have to sound like  

some american movie star you don't have to  sound like anybody what you have to sound like

have you ever been on a busman's holiday  have you ever heard of this expression before  

well let me explain what it is a busman's holiday  is an expression that describes a situation where  

a person is doing something for relaxation that  they would be normally doing in their occupation  

that is to say they are trying to take a break  away from their work by doing something that  

relates to their actual job for example if i went  away for a trip to london for a break away from  

making video lessons and whilst there i went to  visit the youtube headquarters to talk to someone  

about video production then you might describe  this as a busman's holiday i am doing something  

in my free time that relates to my actual job we  can call anything related to a person's profession  

as a busman's holiday if the thing in question  can be connected to their normal occupation  

a doctor might visit a museum of medicine  during a vacation a firefighter might have to  

put out a blaze at a hotel they are staying  at a person who drives a bus for a living  

might have to drive the family around whilst on  holiday hence the expression busman's holiday

i always like to introduce new words and  phrases to you and today is no exception  

the phrase i'm going to show you today  refers to a certain item of clothing  

the phrase is old hat here you can see in my  hand one of my old hats that i used to wear  

the phrase old hat means to be obsolete or tired  out by being done too often or for too long  

a thing that has been said or done time and  time again over a long period of time can be  

referred to as old hat it has been done so  many times before most people have become  

bored with it a tired and overdone thing is old  hat this new superhero movie plot is so old hat  

an out of date thing or something that is  seen as old-fashioned can be described as old  

hat it is no longer fashionable it is boring it  has been done too often for too long it is old  

hat the phrase derives from the notion of  something being worn too often such as an old hat  

to the point where it looks tired and worn  out it has been used for a very long time

and there it was an excerpt from one of my  full english lessons and yes there are many  

many video lessons on my youtube channel  they can all be found right there

we often talk about accents many people worry too  much about how they sound when they speak english  

some people feel under pressure to use a  certain accent when they're talking so it  

can happen it can be a thing that many students  many people learning english as a second language  

can feel when they are trying to learn the  way to speak the way that a person sounds  

as i always say you sound the way that you  feel the most comfortable with and if you are  

not comfortable with it then try to change it  it's as simple as that really but there are no  

actual ways that anyone can force you to sound  when speaking in english so we are looking at  

sick words and phrases which i think is quite  good today because i am not feeling very good  

at all to be honest under the weather  feeling sick feeling unwell well first of all  

the word sick defines the state of feeling  unwell or not as one should a person who does  

not feel 100 percent well is sick a sick  person has a sickness so you can be sick  

you are sick you have a sickness something  that is causing you to become unwell or to feel  

unwell the sickness is what is causing the sick  feeling so the sickness is the cause to be sick is  

the result you feel sick because of the  sickness the thing that is affecting you

we can describe anything that makes us  unwell as a sickness something that makes us  

feel or behave in a way that we would not normally  feel or behave can be described as a sickness so  

something that is affecting you in a negative way  might be described as a sickness he is not at work  

due to sickness so there you can see we  are using the word sick as a generic or  

general term for illness he is not at  work due to sickness the person is ill  

so sickness can be the thing causing the bad  feeling or the general state of feeling ill  

as i mentioned just sickness is the feeling  it can also be the cause a sick person  

feels sick they feel ill they are unwell  they have an illness they are sick

there are many phrases for feeling sick to be  under the weather if you feel under the weather  

it means you are feeling unwell you might say  today that i am feeling under the weather mr  

duncan how are you today well unfortunately i am  feeling under the weather i don't feel very well  

you might also say that you feel out of  sorts i don't feel very well today i feel  

out of sorts it means that you don't  feel yourself you are feeling slightly  

unwell or you are feeling under  the weather to feel off colour  

i like that one a person who is off colour  is a person who is sick they feel unwell  

they feel off colour we might look at a person  and we might say that they look off colour because  

they look pale so quite often when a person  becomes ill or unwell quite often their skin  

will become pale they will look unwell we might  say that a person looks off colour or you can  

feel off colour which means you feel unwell  you feel ill here's a good one i like this one  

to feel green around the gills well of  course gills are normally found on fish  

amphibians they can have gills to breathe through  to be green around the gills means to feel unwell  

a person who is unwell they feel sick they feel  under the weather they feel green around the gills  

perhaps they've been doing something to make  themselves feel ill yes it is possible sometimes  

to do things that make you feel ill or  unwell it can happen i don't feel well  

is what you would say if you feel ill or sick i  don't feel well i'm sorry everyone i don't know  

what to do i don't feel well maybe i should  go to the doctor i'm not feeling too good  

i'm not feeling too good i'm not feeling  well i'm feeling um well i feel sick

i've come down with something now this is an  interesting phrase to come down with something  

means that you have become ill because of a  certain thing so if you come down with something  

it means you have become ill because of a certain  illness maybe a virus maybe something you have  

picked up from another person for example  i have come down with something and i think  

i caught it from steve because he had the  same thing last weekend he also had a cold

from another person i'm a little under the  weather today so this is a common phrase  

quite often we will describe feeling unwell or  sick or maybe slightly unwell you don't feel  

well you feel under the weather so you  might say i'm a little under the weather  

today you are saying that you  feel unwell you don't feel 100

i think i've caught something  

we've all done it we've all caught  something from someone else maybe a cold

or maybe something else you can catch all  sorts of things from other people viruses germs  

bugs you might become sick after picking something  up so pick something up now we're not talking  

about physically holding something we're not  saying that we you are ill because you picked  

something up with your hand we are saying that  you picked something up as you were walking around  

something has affected you maybe  a virus or a germ once again  

so you might become sick after picking something  up something you have come into contact with  

maybe a person who also had the same illness  perhaps you came into contact with someone who  

had a contagious bug now there is a word  that i'm sure we are all familiar with

if you have a contagious bug it is something  that is spreading around something that is  

easily caught so something contagious you  can think of many things that are contagious  

if you have the flu we mentioned that earlier  maybe to be more topical we can say Covid so  

that is something that is contagious it is  easily passed on from one person to another

you catch a bug so this is another way  of expressing becoming sick you catch  

a book or you have caught a bug you catch a bug  you have caught a bug which means you are now ill  

because the thing that you caught the thing that  is now affecting your body is also making you  

unwell at the same time it is something you  have caught so quite often we will use the word  

bug to describe a virus a germ something  we've picked up maybe through contact with  

another person or maybe something that was dirty  maybe a surface or maybe some food that you ate  

have you ever had food poisoning can i just  say don't never get food poisoning never get  

a stomach bug it is one of the worst things you  can imagine getting i remember christmas 2016

when myself mr steve and also mr steve's  mother who was staying at withers at the time  

we all came down with food poisoning and we were  so ill i can't begin to tell you how ill we were  

to become sick is to come down with something  you come down with something something  

you caught you come down with it that thing  that bug that germ that virus has caused you to  

come down with something that means you  have become unwell you have become ill

can you hear me okay one or two people saying  they can't hear me but as far as i'm concerned  

as far as i'm aware i am still coming through loud  and clear you catch a book you have caught a bug  

you have caught a book so when you catch something  it means that thing has entered your body in some  

way maybe through your mouth or your nose or  your eyes or sometimes through your skin as well  

so there are things you can catch that might go  into your body through your skin maybe if you have  

a wound or a cut or maybe an infection  on your hand somewhere you might spread  

an illness to become sick is  to come down with something  

and we can say that you have caught something  

you have caught something so we often think of  catching something like going fishing you catch  

a fish however you can also catch a virus you  can catch a germ maybe something that affects you  

by entering your body although i would say that  there is a difference between germs and also  

viruses they are they are somewhat different  from each other so we can also say that you have  

caught something you have caught something  the thing you have caught has made you  

unwell it has made you sick it is common to  describe a virus as a bug so generically generally  

when we're talking about things that we catch that  make us ill we often talk about a bug we often  

describe a virus as a book i have picked up a bug  something that makes you feel unwell quite often  

a stomach bug maybe you eat some food maybe you've  eaten something that makes your stomach bad maybe  

you have vomiting maybe you have to go to the  toilet quite a lot i think we all know why as well

so it is not pleasant being unwell and there are  many things you can catch many things that can be  

transmitted that can make you feel unwell and yes  we do often talk about viruses viruses however  

what i find interesting is the word virus can be  also something that spreads through society not  

necessarily an illness but maybe something  that is popular so something goes viral  

we might say that something goes  viral it becomes incredibly popular  

we might also have i suppose another  one is computer virus there it is

we we got it eventually virus so virus is  normally a noun an infection or disease caused by  

a virus so the virus is the  thing that causes the illness

a virus can also be a harmful or corrupting  influence something that causes harm  

maybe directly or indirectly can be described as  a virus something that is spreading around may be  

a type of behaviour or maybe an attitude towards  something quite often we use it in a negative way  

and yes there is a computer virus as well a  piece of code which is capable of copying itself  

and typically has the determined effect or  detrimental effect such as corrupting the system  

of your computer or destroying data so yes  that is the reason why we have to protect  

not only ourselves from viruses but also we  have to protect our computer devices as well  

unless of course you have an apple device a lot of  people feel much safer when they have one of those  

so something that goes viral we use this  as an adjective so this is of the nature  

caused by or relating to a virus or viruses  so something that goes viral or is viral is  

something that is spreading it is spreading  and normally it is spreading out of control

another use of viral quite often we  are referring to an image a video or  

a piece of information that is circulated  rapidly and widely from one internet user  

to another so we are now talking about the  internet something that spreads something  

that becomes popular maybe a photograph a piece  of music or maybe something that you've seen  

and you want to share with lots of other  people it can very quickly go viral  

the video went viral and was seen by millions  you might have a viral ad campaign so maybe  

an advertiser maybe a company who wants to sell  their products they will release an advert or  

an advertisement that gets lots of attention  and then is spread around it becomes viral

so when we look at the word viral we are saying  that something is widespread transmittable  

contagious it is something that is  catching as i said earlier you can catch  

an illness you can catch a virus something that  is spreading and something that lots of people get

of the things that we we often talk about when we  we get colds or fever we normally take hot drinks  

normally juice orange juice lemon juice  something warm some people believe that alcohol  

alcohol some people believe that if you have  some alcohol when you're ill it can make you  

feel better i'm not sure how true that is i've  heard the opposite i've heard that if you actually  

drink alcohol when you're sick or ill it can  actually make you feel worse thank you karwa

to recovery is a person who is slowly getting  well they are getting better they are recovering

earlier you were taking some pills for  your ill voice you even showed them to us  

yes i've got something here these i have been  taking these as you can see i i only have one left  

so yes i i was taking these to soothe my throat  

i i think i've got the box somewhere where is  it oh there it is so i've got these you see  

i won't show the name but yes i use these for  my throat sometimes so i have been taking these  

to try and ease the pain in my throat they do work  the only problem is they don't work for very long  

so they soothe your throat they  make it much more comfortable  

but then a few moments later it's hurting again  so it only works for a short time thank you very  

much for your company it has gone rather fast  i can't believe i've been here for nearly an  

hour already wow well all i can say is i think i  lost i lasted much longer than i thought i would
