I think they were using it as punishment.

If they were misbehaving, they would send them to a room

TV screen for my English lessons.

So maybe, maybe it was used as a type of deterrent.

By the way, when we describe something as a deterrent,

we are using something as a way of preventing

a situation from occurring.

It is a deterrent.

It is trying to discourage someone

from doing something quite often

something bad or illegal.

So it is true that many teachers

You give advice, You take advice.

A few moments ago I was talking about teaching and I suppose teaching is a type of advice.

So you are advising, you are giving

advice and information.

So I would say that part of teaching

is giving advice.

I think it is true to say that is the case.

So when we look at advice,

we often give words of advice.

So it's a great way of saying or stating that advice

or information is being given

as help.

You are helping someone by saying something to them.

Advice You give words of

advice.

Advice is something that is offered

a person might offer advice.

They are allowing you to learn something from them.

They have some information that might be useful to you.

I have something that I can tell you

that might be useful,

a useful piece of information that I give to you is advice.

Advice is something that is offered

a helpful hint

or suggestion is advice.

Hint. I love that word.

You give a hint.

It is normally a small piece of advice that is useful.

A little suggestion.

Sometimes you might not want to give someone advice,

so instead you give them a hint,

just a small piece of information.

Or maybe you want someone to learn for themselves.

So maybe you make a suggestion and then you encourage that person

to go out and find out all about that thing for themselves.

So want to give a piece of advice

that can encourage someone to find out more.

So I think there are many ways of expressing

advice, many ways of doing it.

So a helpful hint or suggestion

is advice.

You offer advice,

We offer information.

You are allowing someone to learn something from you.

You are giving advice.

You might offer advice as well.

Of course, the opposite is also possible.

You can receive advice.

It doesn't matter who you are

or how old you are or what your experience is.

I think it is always possible to learn

something from other people

so you can also receive advice you can give and receive.

So you might say that giving advice is an active

action

and receiving advice is passive.

So you are saying that someone will give you

information that might be useful to you.

Maybe there is a question

that you don't know the answer to that person might give you a suggestion,

so they are advising you on something

that you are not sure of.

Maybe something you have to do.

Maybe a piece of information that you want

to be more clear about.

So it is

a good way of doing that.

So you can receive advice as well.

You offer advice, you receive advice.

Both of those things can be very useful indeed.

To give

advice is to advise.

So there is a difference between those two words.

Advice is the thing that you give

advice is

the verb you are advising,

someone you advise, you are helping someone.

So when you advise us, you are providing help.

You are helping that person.

You are giving information to someone

you advise is someone.

Quite often people in power,

people with senior positions,

quite often have people around them to give them advice

and they are often described as advisers.

So advice is the thing that is given as a verb.

You advise someone.

So there is a difference between those two words.

It might seem like a small difference, but if you are writing

something formally, you have to get it right.

Advice and

advise.

You aren't giving the information.

You are offering advice

by advising.

The advice given is seen quite often

as helpful to the one offering it.

So the advice given is seen as helpful

to the one offering it.

So maybe I think that you need some advice.

So the reason why a person will give advice to another person

is because they believe it is useful or helpful.

So that is one of the reasons why someone will try

or they will offer to give advice.

Not everyone likes to be advised.

It is true.

Some people don't like it.

Some people don't like to be given advice.

You might ask someone for advice

or you seek a person's counsel

you counsel.

So if a person is giving advice, we can say that they are

counselling another person.

You seek counsel.

So basically counsel means to help to advise.

You are discussing maybe something with another person

and you are trying to help them by giving them useful advice.

Advice can be described

as help assistance,

information, guidance, instruction

or recommendation.

So I suppose if there is something you want to offer

as advice, you can help that person.

You are giving them assistance, you are offering them information,

you are offering guidance,

instruction, or maybe recommendation.

You are recommending something.

Maybe a person has nothing to do

on Friday night and they might ask their friend

if they know of anywhere to go or any place

that is exciting to visit.

So the other person will give them advice, they will give them

some recommendation, maybe a place to eat.

I know a great place

where you can take your girlfriend on a date.

A lovely restaurant.

It's very romantic.

So I am recommending something to you.

I am offering you some advice

that may or may not be useful.

You might receive advice willingly.

This is often described as solicited advice.

So to solicit is to offer something

or to put something forward

as an offer to another person.

So advice that you want to receive

is given, solicited, or in a solicited way.

You offer advice.

It's a little bit like advertising as well.

Maybe someone will come to your door and they will knock on your door

and they will try to sell something to you on your doorstep

that is not solicited, that is unsolicited.

You did not ask for it.

It was offered without your permission.

You might receive advice

unwillingly.

So as I just said, that is the opposite.

This is unsolicited advice.

We often go to places for advice.

We might go to an organisation.

Maybe if there is a couple in a relationship or a marriage

who are having difficulty with their relationship,

they will go to see someone who will give them advice.

I'm not sure if it happens nowadays, but I do remember

way back in the 1970s and the eighties,

there were a lot of people offering marriage advice.

So you would go along and you would try to help your relationship.

I think I think most of this started in the 1980s

by people became more aware of their their social situations,

especially in relationships.

So there are many things that you can get advice about.

Of course, you can go to a therapist as well.

So maybe a person that you visit may be a person that you go

to who will give you help, information, maybe therapy.

I know in the United States, many people have therapy.

They go to someone and they will sit down maybe for an hour

and they will tell that person all their problems, all their troubles that they are having.

Of course, not all advice is useful.

You might find yourself receiving bad advice.

This can happen in many different situations.

One of the most common, I think these days

is financial advice.

Everyone seems to know the way to make lots of money,

investing in shares,

buying cryptocurrency.

That's the big one.

Although it would appear that that is not as popular as it used to be.

But I know a couple of years ago

everyone was talking about buying Bitcoin and cryptocurrency

and then the value would go up and then it would fall again.

Sometimes people would take advice from another person

and they would lose all their money.

So it can happen.

It can happen.

Financial advice, I think, is one of the trickiest

because sometimes you might receive bad advice

and you might actually lose money because of it.

So not all advice is good advice.

Sometimes you can receive

bad advice or unhelpful advice.

The person receiving bad advice

might be described as being ill advised.

So you can see the phrase just underneath my finger.

You are ill advised.

So we often describe this situation when a person has received

or they've been the victim of bad advice.

They were ill advised.

It is a phrase we often use

when we are talking about advice that was not helpful.

In fact, it may have caused damage.

You help someone, you assist someone.

So we often see advice as a form of help assistance.

You are offering information not to another person.

You are giving them advice.

I don't like to be advised, says Moustafa.

I feel like we should change the topic.

I don't make mistakes, but of course everyone makes mistakes,

but with no confrontation.

I think many people don't like this.

I think it is human. Behave here.

Sometimes we don't like to

be told how to do something.

I think maybe it is arrogance.

Even I sometimes I have to say I will put my hand up

and I will say that sometimes I don't like

to be told how to do something

because I think I already know how to do it.

So I think we all have that problem.

We all sometimes reject advice

because we think we know better than that person.

We think we already know how to do something,

but Advice can be useful.

There might be many situations where you need advice

from someone and there is no shame.

There is nothing wrong with asking another person for help or advice.

You should never be ashamed of that.

A professional adviser is often described as a counsellor.

As I mentioned a few moments ago, a person whose job

is to give advice

normally connected to a way or the way

a person behaves or thinks, or maybe two people in a relationship.

As I mentioned earlier, they are often described as a counsellor.

They also can be described

as an adviser as well.

So a person who is an adviser

is, a person who gives advice

normally in a professional way,

you might have

relationship advice,

you see a relationship adviser,

financial advice,

medical advice.

So there is one I haven't mentioned yet.

You might have to go to see someone because you are worried about

how to handle a certain health problem or health issue.

It is true.

So an adviser is a person

who gives information.

They are an adviser

and you might notice their

there are two spellings of the word adviser.

So you can spell it in two different ways with,

and e

So there are two different ways.

One, of course, is used in American English and the other in British English.

You might also suggest

something suggest I like that word.

You suggest you suggest something to another person.

You make a suggestion.

So a suggestion is a piece of advice that you are offering.

That is the advice.

The advice is the suggestion.

Shall we go out for a meal tonight?

Let's go to that new place that's opened in the High Street.

I suggest you make a suggestion.

Maybe you make a suggestion as to what to watch on television tonight.

Something like that.

You make a suggestion, suggest something.

You put forward advice or you offer

something that can be accepted or refused.

Some people find it hard to ask for advice

and they see it as a sign of weakness.

This might be true, but I would say, as I said,

a few moments ago, there is nothing wrong with asking for help.

If you need help,

never be afraid to

ask for help or advice.

And also, as I said earlier, teachers

are always willing to give advice

that is their job when you think about it.

So I would say that advice given in education

is generally the way that teaching works.

You are always giving advice.

Here are some words of advice.

Now, these are things that I like to offer when I talk generally

about situations that people might come across.

One of the things that you learn as you get older

is that you can give advice to people.

You can give words of advice.

So I would like to offer words of advice.

Today, if I may,

perhaps my advice will be useful.

Or maybe not.

You have a choice.

Never worry about the things you cannot change.

There are things in the world that you can change quite often.

You can alter certain things.

You can change them.

You can make them different.

You can improve them.

But you should never worry about the things

that you cannot change or things you can't stop.

For example, never worry about getting older.

It's going to happen, so don't worry about it.

Enjoy the journey.

Don't forget old age is a privilege

that many never get.

Never worry about things you cannot change.

Concentrate on your own goals and not the ones of others.

It is very easy in life to become distracted

by other people, the things they are doing.

So instead of thinking about your own desires,

or maybe your own path or your own goals that you want to pursue,

you might become distracted by what other people are doing.

It happens all the time.

Maybe your

neighbour is doing something that is distracting you.

Maybe they are doing something to their house.

Maybe they are buying new furniture.

Maybe you feel distract it because that person appears to be doing more

or having more success than you.

In fact, you should never be distracted by that.

Never allow yourself to be distracted by these things.

Concentrate on your own goals

and not the ones of others.

Sometimes, of course, people will try to discourage you.

They will try to put you off.

They will say things that might be seen as negative.

My advice is to ignore them

worrying about what other people think

will eventually become an unwelcome distraction,

very similar to the previous one.

If you worry about what people think about you,

or if you worry about what people might think, if you do something,

maybe you are afraid that they will make fun or laugh at you.

Worrying about what other people will think

eventually becomes or it will become

an unwelcome distraction.

It is very easy to become distracted by what people think.

My advice,

especially after doing this here on YouTube for 17 years,

when I first started doing this, I received a lot of criticism

and a lot of

hate.

Dare I say,

way back in 2007 and 2008

and also 2009.

I used to receive a lot of criticism from people writing to me

and telling me I was rubbish.

My ways of teaching were nonsensical.

This, I managed to ignore them all.

Here's another piece of advice, some words of advice from Mr.

Duncan.

We all have a story to tell, but only a few of us

have the courage to tell that.

And this is something I firmly believe in.

I think everyone has a story inside,

a story that they could tell, maybe some things

that they could write down and publish,

or maybe you could produce a blog online

or maybe a video log as well.

You could tell people about your life experiences.

So it is possible to help other people by by recounting

or recalling your own experiences the way you made it through life.

So I think we all have a story to tell,

and quite often they can be interesting

or they can be encouraging.

But only a few people

will have the courage to actually write their story.

We all have a story to tell.

We do.

If you are going to write something

and I know I receive a lot of questions

about writing because some people love practice saying that

writing skills because it is a very good way of improving your English.

You can write about the things that interest you.

You can express yourself through the things that draw your attention

in a positive and meaningful way.

So it is possible.

It is possible to write

something, write about things that you enjoy.

Write about things that you know about.

Shafiq says,

I will not be distracted by what other people think.

Well, I think it is good advice and this is advice that I've taken in the past.

So the advice that I'm giving today is also advice

that I've been given in the past, and it has been very helpful.

Of course, in life we all have problems.

Things come along, things come along

to spoil our plans, to make life difficult.

A bad moment is short lived, so don't let it spoil

all of the moments that follow on from it.

A brief of difficulty or unhappiness

does not mean

that what follows will be unpleasant.

So a bad moment is short lived.

It only lasts for a short time.

Whatever that situation is, there is always a chance to move forward.

There is always tomorrow.

You can always move forward.

I remember during the pandemic

when I was doing my special live streams

and I was here every day during the pandemic

and I was giving similar advice.

Light at the end of the tunnel

was another thing that I was about.

Finally, the next time someone calls you

weird or eccentric,

you reply with the following sentence I am not eccentric.

You are boring.

Not you, not you watching now.

But if someone ever says you are weird, you are eccentric,

I will say no, I'm not eccentric.

I'm just

not a boring person

and that

should keep them quiet.

A person might be in a situation where they need help

or maybe they need advice.

Maybe they are too afraid to ask for advice.

How should I learn new words?

Learning new words is something you do

slowly over time.

So don't try to learn too much in one day.

One of the things about my lessons and about my videos

is you can watch them again

and again as many times as you want.

So even if you don't understand what I'm saying straight away,

maybe some of the words on new.

Never be afraid to write them down

or to look them up on the internet.

Have a dictionary nearby.

And this is one of the best ways of improving

your word power.
