oh hello there hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today

are you okay I hope so are you happy are you happy today I hope so it is quite a

nice day here in England not too bad thank you very much

the Sun is out even though we had some rain this morning but it looks as if

everything is okay right now and yes you may have noticed I am outside once again

yes we are outdoors today because the weather isn't too bad and even if it

does rain I have something covering my head

so something is protecting me from the rain so it doesn't matter rain or shine

I am here for you and here we go live oh my goodness so first of all let me just

open up the live chat I need to get that working first sometimes it doesn't work

sometimes it does come on YouTube oh that's interesting I've never seen my

phone do that before it did something very strange then I had an update a

couple of days ago on my iPhone and ever since then my phone has been working

very strangely it hasn't been working the way it should and I don't know why

a super weekend my weekend is not too bad however I have had a very busy and

some might say traumatic week I don't know if you've heard but if you read my

Twitter you will know that mr. Steve's mum has been staying with us this

week because she had a nasty accident on Monday so last Monday Steve's mother was

involved in a car accident so her car was hit by another driver their car

smashed into Steve's mother's car and fortunately thanks to modern technology

the the car well the car first of all was destroyed it was a write-off

and but the good thing is Steve's mum was unharmed because the airbag in front

of her went off so because the airbag was just deployed

if you deploy something it means you make it go off or you set it off you

deploy something ah there we go yes the live chat is now working thank goodness

for that so thank you very much to all those who

says I hope mr. Steve's mother is feeling better yes she stayed with us

for the week but yesterday she went back home and can you believe it she has a

car at the moment that she she's hiring from a company and she went into the car

yesterday was driving it as if nothing had happened

so for those who have sent their good wishes to mr. Steve's mother after her

car accident thank you very much but she's okay physically she's fine but but

of course these things can be quite shocking don't you think something that

is a surprise something that is unexpected we'll be talking about that

later on so thank you very much for all of your lovely messages concerning mr.

Steve's mother and her accident on Monday but she's she's okay now she is

the most amazing woman she is I don't know how but I said to Steve last night

I said I think Steve your mum has has nine lives like

a cat whatever happens Steve's mum always bounces back always manages to

overcome the problems in her life so yes she's okay thanks to the car

it's great isn't it modern cars are quite amazing I wish mr. Steve was here

at the moment because he would talk and talk for the whole afternoon about cars

I think so so cars nowadays are quite safe when it comes to being involved in

an accident because there are lots of safety features on modern cars that will

protect your body and one of the most useful is the airbag airbag which will

expand and protect you if your car is involved in an impact if it is hit or if

it hits another car so it's good news mr. Steve's mum is okay thank you very

part idioms today idioms connected with and to the human body so that's

something to look forward to later on something I wanted to start off with

today of course we are all here together now in the present at this very moment

you are watching me and I am talking to you and there are many ways of

expressing the present especially when it comes to the present way of living or

the present way of life and there you can see already on the screen you can

see there are some expressions some words related to our way of living and

in this case we are talking about the time in which we are living so for

example we can say modern times well modern times relate to now and also this

period of time so when we talk about modern times we are actually talking

about this period of time I will move it over here I think it's easier to see so

there it is so when we talk about modern times

normally this relates to now modern times the way we live these days so the

way of life these things can be described as current so current events

current trends things that are happening now we can

describe them as current they are current they are happening now they are

relevant to this point of time current also of course the the word have used

already model modern so something that is modern is up to date it is around now

maybe something that has recently been introduced can be described as modern so

we can have modern architecture so the types of buildings that are being built

right now so we can describe that as modern architecture we can say modern

art of course modern art so when we talk about modern art we are talking about

art that is being created around this period of time of course it can also

relate to something else which is new ways of doing things which we will look

at in a moment also ah now the here's a word I like this word

very much here is an interesting word that is used quite a lot and this word

is contemporary contemporary so when we talk about something that is

contemporary we are saying that it is current it is something that is being

done or a style or a type of thing that is appearing during this period of time

so something that is modern something that is current something that is

happening right now something that is being created now something contemporary

so we can have contemporary music contemporary art this when small relates

to something that is modern and current so there we go

can temporary of course your contemporaries

can also be the people who are equal to you the people around you so your

contemporaries can also be the people who are presently around you the people

nearby your contemporaries we can also say up-to-date so something can be

up-to-date so when we say something is up-to-date

it is current so it isn't old it isn't something that is old or used or ward

it is up-to-date for example this week on my phone my software was updated so

it was made new so we update something by making it

current or new and of course when we do that it is up-to-date

something is up-to-date latest the latest thing the newest thing the thing

that has just arrived is the latest thing when we talk about trends we might

say that something is the latest the latest gadget the latest electrical

device the latest music the things that people are listening to right now that

have just appeared the latest things he's an interesting word you might not

have seen this word before if you haven't well here it is right now when

we talk about neo neo this relates to things that are new neo so when you use

this as a prefix we are saying that this thing is replacing or is trying to

replace the thing that was there before something is new neo so near

liberalism is new liberalism we can also have neo art which relates to modern art

and underneath you can see new so it is new it is something that wasn't around

before it is new where we talk about the present day of this time we can say

zeitgeist now there is an interesting word

so again perhaps this is a word that you've never come across before maybe

this is a new word zeitgeist zeitgeist literally means the spirit of time it is

actually German so zeitgeist relates to the spirit of a certain time and it can

be in the past something historic or historical or now so the current trend

the current way of thinking is the zeitgeist we talk about things that are

currently happening currently being done or we can focus on a certain point in

the past and say that is how it was done that is how people used to think we

describe it as the zeitgeist a very interesting word there so there it is

the start of today's live English in your ear and lots of people on the live

I mentioned surprises earlier I had a rather interesting surprise on Monday

and so did Steve when the phone rang and it was someone saying that Steve's

mother had been involved in a car accident and fortunately she is okay but

we were very surprised by the news in fact you might say that there are other

ways of expressing that feeling and here they are now look at that it's almost as

if I had planned this do you think so so do you like surprises have you ever

had a big surprise so when we say surprise

it can mean something we were not expecting something that occurred that

we were not prepared for something that you were not prepared for so there are

many ways of expressing surprise words such as shock shock that is the emotion

that I felt on Monday when Steve told me about his mum shock so shock you might

not believe this but shock can be good or bad so you can have

nice shock maybe a surprise birthday party so you are shocked but in a nice

way so a shock can be good or bad so a good shock can be a nice surprise

a bad shock can be some terrible news maybe someone tells you about something

that's happened that is absolutely dreadful something has happened that

isn't very nice also we can have delight our delight is a wonderful word

it really is delight so when something is a delight it means it is something

that is good it's enjoyable it is very pleasant it is nice we can say that it

is delight it is a delight to see you again it is a delight to be here it is a

unexpected so maybe something you weren't expecting something that

appeared suddenly is unexpected oh you are here what an unexpected surprise

bombshell it is a great expression for describing something that has left you

feeling devastated something you weren't expecting a thing that came along that

gave you a big shock it is a bombshell and as its name suggests it is something

that lands and explodes and leaves you shocked

surprise surprise you can have a lovely surprise you can have a nice surprise or

you can have a not so nice surprise something that is a nice surprise maybe

a surprise birthday party or maybe one of your friends from school

suddenly contacts you that's a nice surprise or perhaps you have an

unpleasant supply to surprise something bad happens an unpleasant surprise

something that is sudden and without warning is a surprise so the basic

definition of any surprise is something that is sudden and without warning you

didn't know it was going to happen it was

imagine that the human body is a very fascinating thing what do you think

about the human body I think it's amazing I really do when

you wake up in the morning and you stretch your arms and your legs and you

get out of bed and your heart starts to beat fast and you go and have your

breakfast and then you do some exercises to get your body moving wow the human

body is incredible so today I thought we would have a look at some idioms and

expressions to do with the human body so that's what we're going to do today

let's look at some expressions some body idioms expressions and phrases that use

parts of the human body they relate to parts of the body so there are many

idioms and phrases in English that relate to all of this the human body

the big question is is this a man or a woman I'm not sure because it could be

either so I'm not sure if that's a man or a woman I think it might be both so I

think it's kind of a mixture of the two shapes so no one is left out so so

before anyone complains because these days people like complaining about these

things so this is not a man or a woman it is just a general shape to show the

human form so I hope that that helps you does it help you does it

I hope so for us I'm wasting my time so let's have a look oh I like this oh here

we go so here is our first idiom connected to that's really annoying me

excuse me can you just stop doing that

very annoying that's better I think I've cured it now so the first human body

expression and you can see the elbow there it is there is my elbow I don't

know if you've noticed but I always think that the elbow gets old before any

other part of your body have you ever looked at your elbow look it looks

dreadful look look how look how old your elbow looks it's horrible and I've

noticed that your elbow is the first part of your body to get old before any

other part of the body your elbow is the first part to get old

so that is our first body part idiom elbow and you can see give someone the

elbow you give someone the elbow to give someone the elbow is to push away or

exclude a person from a group you refuse you refuse to communicate with someone

anymore so you refuse to communicate with someone anymore you

of them the elbow you give them the push you give them the elbow so maybe someone

who is in your life who you find very annoying they really do get on your

nerves that's another part of the body your nerves so a person might get on

your nerves so you give them you give them the elbow you push them away you

exclude them yes I think that the elbow your elbows they are the first parts of

your body that start to look old I think so anyway you don't have to agree with

me it's not the law I think we need to start appreciating our bodies more on a

more global level well I think you're right there Lilia because there there

are certain instances in many countries especially Western countries where

people do not take care of their health they don't look after their bodies so

you are young mr. Duncan no matter your age it is the way you joke and you play

around yes I think age is all about attitude your attitude to to getting

older your attitude to life your attitude towards other people it's all

it's all very important so yes I think so okay here's another body idiom I hope

something that looks gruesome can you see it I hope so

lose your head a person can lose their head so this is a well-known idiom an

expression that we sometimes use in English if you lose your head it means

to become angry or uncontrollable with rage so if you lose your head you become

angry you lose control you lose control of your emotions you can't control

yourself you lose your head

you lose your head or you have lost your head so if we are talking in the past we

can say that a person has lost their head or they lost their head they lost

control of their emotions they lost their head so don't lose your head don't

or if you have to back down in an argument or maybe you say something and

then later you have to change your mind about it we can say that you've Lou

whose face you lose face so yes that's a good one I like that one

can't always be happy and jolly all the time it's impossible
