Today we will look at three words that are often confused with each other.

The words are ‘there’ ‘their’ and they’re

Confused? You won't be for much longer.

First of all, let's look at ‘there’

The word ‘there’ can be used in many ways,

as an adverb pronoun and a noun.

As an adverb, the word ‘there’ means in or at that place,

as in “she is there now”.

Another adverb use is to define

a certain point during an action.

For example, during a speech.

“He stopped there for applause.”

“We will pause there for a break.”

Also, as an adverb, the word there can express in that matter,

or point to a particular thing or in respect of.

“His anger, was justified there.”

we can use ‘there’ to state that place;

into that place or ‘thither’.

“We went there last night.”

We can use there to draw attention to something or someone.

“There they go.”

“There it is.”

To state the place or position at that moment.

“Well, hi there.”

As a pronoun, the word

there is used to introduce a sentence

in which the verb comes before its subject or has no complement.

“There is no hope.”

“There is no point.”

Also as a pronoun.

We can state that place.

“She comes from there too.”

Finally, the word ‘there’ can be used as a noun,

as in that state or condition.

“I'll introduce you, But you are on your own from there on.”

The idiom - ‘Been there, done that’ means that you are familiar

or have had some experience with a particular thing.

But now you consider it to be boring

or of little worth.

Next, we will look at the word ‘their’.

The sound of this word may be similar to the previous one,

but its meaning is very different indeed.

The word ‘their’ is a pronoun

that is a form of the possessive case of the plural ‘they’.

It is often used before a noun.

For example, ‘their home’, ‘their rights, as a citizen.’

‘Their departure for Rome.’ The word ‘their’ can also be used as

a form of possessive case of the singular ‘they’.

As an attribute of adjective before a noun.

It can be used to refer to a generic

or unspecified person previously mentioned,

about to be mentioned or present in the immediate context.

“Someone left their book on the table.”

“A parent should read to their child.” It can also be used to refer to

a specific or known person previously mentioned

or about to be mentioned or present in the immediate context.

“I'm glad my teacher last year had high expectations for their students.”

It can also be used to refer

to a nonbinary or gender non-conforming person previously mentioned

about to be mentioned or present in the immediate context.

“My cousin Sam is bad at maths, but their other grades are good.”

Finally, we have the word ‘they’re’

which is also pronounced in the same way as the previous words

Grammatically the word ‘they’re’ is a contraction of ‘they are’.

It is a shortened way of saying ‘they are’.

“They're not coming to the party.”

“They’re both too unwell.”
