Sunny Sunday Live English - Speak English like a Pro - Listen and Learn with Duncan and Steve

So here we are it's a Sunday afternoon and I hope you are happy today it's a

glorious day here in England it is very very warm and I am busy here in the

kitchen doing some decorating at the moment I am preparing to do some

painting but first I will have to mask the areas that I don't want the paint to

get on the word mask can be used as both a verb and a noun so if you mask

something you cover it you hide it from view you can mask your identity by

wearing a mask and I am about to do some masking here with this masking tape it

is very hard to hide my excitement I cannot mask it any longer do you know

why because it's Sunday afternoon here in the UK it's just after 2 o'clock and

this is live English

oh hello there hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today

are you okay I really hope so are you happy well are you happy are you really

really happy I really really really hope so here we go then now first of all can

I just explain that I wasn't supposed to be here today doing a live stream I am a

little bit busy at the moment you could say that I have my hands full right now

literally so I wasn't supposed to be here today but now I am and I thought

well it's such a beautiful day here in England

I couldn't resist doing a live stream however I will be here for just one hour

so you only have one hour of live stream today I hope you can hear me okay and I

hope you can see me all right so first of all as you can see this is a clue and

as you saw at the start of the live stream I'm very busy at the moment doing

some decorating in the kitchen for those who have been following the story

I am currently renovating the kitchen and that's what I'm doing at the moment

so that's why I have all of these brushes can you see the brushes various

sizes of brushes in my hand and there are many many different types we will

also be taking a look at some of the things that I'm doing and I will be

showing you some of the things I will be doing in the kitchen and the material

that I am using as well so I hope you are well the live chat should be working

now I hope it is if it isn't we are all in very big trouble so first of all I

will put my brushes down down here excuse me and we can get on with the

live chat as you can see I am wearing my rubber gloves today I look like a doctor

but don't worry I won't be doing any examinations on anyone today I've just

the moment and to be honest with you I'm not in the mood for technical problems

we are having the most amazing sunny day it's incredible here it really does feel

as if summer has arrived and I am so busy can you can you guess what I'm

doing just in case you missed the beginning of today's livestream it

involves one of these I'm doing a lot of decorating I am renovating the kitchen

that's a great word renovate if you renovate something it means you renew it

you make it as new you renovate of course you can also

use the word restore but normally that's used in a slightly different way so if

you are painting and decorating and making your room look as good as new we

can say that you are renovating the room or of course if you are doing work on

the outside of your house we can say that you are renovating the house

renovate you may have seen someone's very unhappy looking head at the start

of today's live stream he was resting his limbs you could see him sitting

there contemplating life and the meaning of life and is here right now here he

comes yes it wouldn't be a live stream without

I can see the live chat laurel bushes are great because they grow very quickly

laurel bushes are used a lot here in the UK as boarders in gardens and the reason

why they are so popular is because they grow very quickly look at that you can

face though those shears were their temptation I thought Steve was gonna cut

very busy week I'm decorating in the kitchen and mr. Steve is doing lots of

work outside oh my back I've got an aching back because I've

been doing so much gardening bending over John I hate doing the most in a

garden I like mowing the lawns as you've seen in previous lessons I enjoy coming

back hedges but I do not like weeding weeding so when we're weed it means we

get rid of plants that are in the wrong place

weeds are plants in places that you don't want them you don't like weeds do

you Steve no I don't so a nice plant in one area may not be suitable in another

area and because the definition of a weed is a plant in a place that you

don't want it it can really refer to any plant and and of course weed can also

mean a person who is very weak when I was at school people would always call

me a weed because I was very thin and very feeble you remember the other night

with my very feeble weak wrists naughty wrists my floppy wrists look and I've

got my rubber gloves on today actually I could give Steve a prostate exam

couldn't I do that Mr dunk I just thought I could do that I could give mr.

Steve his because he's overdue for his prostate exam I mind so he could I've

got my rubber gloves on so easily but I can't remember it says should I use one

finger or all my fingers that's that that's the only thing I'm not sure about

I'm that is never something that any man wants to hear goes to the doctor and the

doctor says I need to give you a prostate examination because you know

what that means it's very embarrassing it's

uncomfortable I don't know why mind you it can save your life so that's it is a

very important thing the doctor likes to put his finger up your bum but when you

get to 50 I don't know what it is when you get to 50 the doctors all want to

want to have a a feel inside with their finger so they can make sure that your

health is is good I believe prostate cancer is the communist form of cancer

in men that's not very good is it is one of the the top one yes in women it's

breast cancer of course but in men I think it's prostate cancer so after the

age of 50 the old prostate it starts to swell up and if we don't look after it

and make sure that it's well it swells up anyway I think but the fact is if you

if you start having problems going to the loo that's a man anyone watching

over 50 now if you're having trouble going to the loo you better get up - you

don't you're getting up at night and having to get up two or three times the

night go to the loo then you need to get checked out because it could be just

benign prostate okay serious all right Steve as men you see the thing with men

is they're very bad when they get symptoms are very bad at going to the

doctor they put it off and put it off and put it off and and then it's often

sometimes too late and you know lots of nasty treatment why are you talking so

blue rubber gloves on before well it just stops the paint from getting on

your hands it it just keeps your hands clean so afterwards you can take the

gloves off and and your hands are nice and clean I hope you can hear is all

right we can't hear you very well apparently everyone's saying we can't

hear you I didn't call you mope I don't know why my I can't turn the volume up

any more or else we will be too loud but apparently tgn is saying we can't hear

you can you hear us I hope you can because

we're not in the studio or outside so I if I have to turn the volume or the

sounder then I have to go back into the studio and it's very annoying but I

think it's Steve you can't hear you go back in with your knobs and I'll stay

out here okay we're here for an hour well mr. Duncan's going to go inside and

check the the level to make sure that everybody can hear us of course I don't

know what to say now because he's left me all on my own it was my suggestion of

course so shall I go through some of the garden implements that have been using

and tell you what they're called I know we've done this before but some people

might not have seen it before so I'll go through a few of them that's a pair of

garden shears she is sh e a are s used for obviously

chopping off bits of branch and hedges

there we go I've got a couple of trowels just happened to have them handy for

weeding digging up weeds in the garden this one's a bit more pointy because

that's very good at getting out some difficult roots and that one's good for

just generally scraping around mmm you should last a few years

I hate weeding as I've already said and of truck the problem is with weeds is it

takes ages to go over a small piece of ground to get rid of that rid of the

weeds and then before you know it you turn your back and two weeks later

they've all grown back again I hate it and it's very very bad on your back so

if you've got back problems and if and you're a gardener you'll know that

weeding is probably the the worst thing for your back that you could have

possibly imagined mr. Duncan here's got loads of decorating implements that no

doubt he's going to show you next when he comes out in a few minutes time I

have no idea whether you can hear me or not but I haven't got the live chat in

front of me mr. Duncan's run off with that he's gone back into his studio to

check the the volume on on the hill on his microphone so hopefully you can and

hopefully I won't be here much longer all on my own and mr. Duncan will come

back in front of the camera and we can continue with the live stream there are

insects all can you sing that as a hover fly just buzz in my direction we get

lots of hover flies here in fact because we live out in the country we get lots

of insects in general I quite often say that we get plagues a plague that means

you get an an awful lot of something a plague is like an overwhelming amount of

insects and we've had a plague of lady birds as you know and we've also had a

plague of thunder bugs little little tiny little bugs that get everywhere and

Oh mr. Duncan is a walk going into the back of the garden

hopefully he's fixed the sound have you fixed the sound mr. day there is

absolutely nothing wrong with the sound it's perfectly alright I think you need

to turn your volume up on your computer so I was left all on my own for nothing

improvise anyway I'm just surprised I mean you can just have you can hold that

kitchen at the moment doing not cooking although having said that something is

cooking in the kitchen but it isn't food what is actually going on in the kitchen

at the moment is I am doing some decorating I am making the kitchen look

t-shirt yes this is my painting t-shirt and do you know why I always wear this

when I paint it's because if I get paint on the t-shirt you can't see because it

already looks as if there is paint on the t-shirt because of the design so the

design of the t-shirt looks like paint and if I get any paint on it you can't

tell the difference Mike here wants a lesson in decorating oh okay because he

needs to paint his entrance his entrance wall there's nothing worse than a dirty

entrance here we go then so as you can see I'm Lou I'm using lots of brushes at

the moment lots of paint brushes so all of these paint brushes are useful for

certain types of painting jobs for example he's dropped his brush I'm

living the live commentary from Steve here we go so there we go there's a ton

he brush now that is used for very small areas or corners that you can't get the

pink brush into and it's a very useful brush for getting into very tight

corners it really really is yes Anna you can see the kitchen it will be finished

hopefully by the next time mr. Duncan does a live stream hopefully and no

slightly larger brush this is very good for small areas that you want to make

sure if you want to make sure that the paint is very smooth and it goes on

evenly but maybe it's just a very small area you can use this particular paint

brush this one is just one inch in width so that is one inch wide about two and a

half centimeters if you're using that measure Jeff 12 says that you are all

set for painting set there's another one we're going to use examples of the word

happen one and a half inches can you see this brush so this one is slightly

larger one and a half inches again very useful for painting small surfaces small

tiles are horrible so he's been we've got some tile paint ceramic paint and

it's very noxious it has lots of poisonous fumes and mr. Duncan's been

annoying me because he's been because he doesn't want the Flies to get on to the

paint he's shut all the doors in the house and there was these noxious fumes

actually warned you on the side of the paint then it actually make you pass out

doesn't it yes well the few the fumes in in the actual paint it's very strong so

the fumes the smell the odor when it's in the air can make you actually feel

drowsy and fall asleep it actually says on the side of the container it says may

cause drowsiness so using that particular paint certainly in an

environment where there is no air or there is there is no circulation of

fresh air it can actually make you feel sleepy so the problem at the moment is

I'm trying to paint but of course there are flies all hatching out now so it's a

real pain in the neck to be honest because all of the Flies keep landing on

the wet paint and there's nothing worse than that

so I have to keep the windows and the doors closed in the kitchen and because

of that the the fumes the fumes coming from the paint go up my nose and make me

this is an even bigger brush look at this brush it's even bigger this is 2

inches this is a 2 inch brush very useful for large areas you can paint

parts of a wall or maybe yes what isn't what is an inch then how many

centimeters is it two and a half centimeter so it's two and a half

centimeters is an inch well 12 inches is 30 centimeters so 12 inches which is

well fact that's about 12 inches a foot a foot or a foot in English and it's

about 30 centimeters if you want to know how how long a foot is you just take

your shoes and socks off and then you will see two feet nice to have 12 inches

it's a nice size and of course in a meter there are a hundred centimeters as

we know which is about three feet something like that so it's about 36

inches it's slightly less than that but yes and inches about two half

it that is true it saved me a fortune on the house it's the same with any job

around the house if you've got something to do and you've been putting it off and

putting it off you don't want to do it like we've been putting off the kitchen

for probably two years at least it's the effort of starting

that's the that's the biggest effort is starting something once you got over

that initial hurdle of starting it's the worst partnership the worst part is

starting a job starting a job it's like if you're trying to push a car you need

a lot of energy to get it going but once it's going it's the same with decorating

the wall evenly so that is called a paper hanging brush a paper hanging

it is a roll of wallpaper this is the wallpaper that I will be applying to the

walls in the kitchen now this is textured wallpaper so I will apply this

to the wall and then afterwards I will paint the paper and then you will have a

nice textured effect texture texture of course we were going to just take the

old wallpaper off that was here from the previous owners of the house and just

paint the walls because we don't really we've just preferred to have painted

walls hmm but when we took the old wallpaper off we discovered the plaster

underneath was in such bad condition that there was no alternative but to

have to cover it up again with new paper and then paint it the walls are all

cracked they're all cracked as plasters coming out everywhere we'd have we'd

have to get a plaster in to redo the entire kitchen which we don't want to do

so we're just going to wallpaper it a plasterer a plasterer is a person who

applies plaster to the wall it is the hard surface of a wall you can apply

plaster but unfortunately the plaster in our kitchen has all cracked crumbled it

is cracked some of it is falling off so I'm going to use wallpaper to cover the

horrible cracks Chaka says what is the best color for a kitchen Oh something

bright something cheerful maybe a bright green very bright right green you can

have a bright dream you can have a vote a green a bright green I thought you

said what I said Oh green a very certainly if you have a traditional

style of kitchen you might have a very not a harsh green not like the green of

the grass but maybe something very delicate a delicate green

or a delicate Orange something with a little bit of warmth maybe the color

that I denied the color that I don't like is blue I think blue is a very cold

color for a room so whenever I paint my own rooms I always like to use a very

warm color maybe an orange or a red or something that is like a cream color

uneven we can also use the word contour so it has contours it's textured so more

going to it's the type of wallpaper that you can paint over the top so you put

that on and then paint over your own color we've got to have a very light

it's called delicate cream cream so think of the color of cream in milk and

it's a very very light sort of off-white yes is it it has a slight warmth to it

so it's not a cold white I think sometimes white can be very harsh in a

room it can here's something you may have seen in some of my other videos

when I was painting the walls look it's my lovely paint roller so this

is something you use for applying paint to large surfaces Oh yang Yang says he

thought he heard a big plane fly fly past so he thought it was a Vulcan

bomber oh I see we have had a Vulcan bomber go over the house we did yes but

now that they're all out of service they don't fly anymore so now there are

no Vulcan bombers flying they have they have all been grounded so that they

don't fly anymore so when we saw the one go over this house there was a big

display nearby a place called Cosford and every year they have a big air

display and a Vulcan bomber went right over the house very very low and we were

standing outside and we saw it go over the house it was amazing

gigantic and that was the that was the last ever Vulcan bomber in existence

that was flying and now after that point they've all been grounded so now there

are no Vulcan bombers flying at all Jing has seen the plane in an airshow in

Lincolnshire hmm yes that's it so I think they were there very old planes I

think they were actually came into service it could have been in the late

fifties early sixties so they're very old planes and have been keeping them

going for for many years but they're fantastic looking aeroplanes you

wouldn't want to see one of those carrying overhead because they're big

they're maybe dropping some rather large bombs I don't think we've replaced the

Vulcan bomber I don't think we've got one we don't have a big airforce I will

be honest with you we don't have many aeroplanes when I say aeroplanes I mean

jet fighters we have this amazing aircraft carrier called I think it's the

queen elizabeth the queen elizabeth ii it's it's this amazing huge aircraft

carrier but embarrassingly we have no aircraft to put on it so instead we have

helicopters now really that's pointless because you could put helicopters in any

way so this amazing huge ship that cost billions not millions billions to build

has been has been built but they have no planes to put on it that's very

embarrassing very embarrassing so there's my wallpaper roller sorry wall

roller for painting the walls Sergio says paper in the kitchen isn't

practical as a water vapor now yes I you have got

a point there it's not too bad in it you certainly wouldn't want it in the

bathroom I think it will be but in the kitchen it's not too bad

anyway we haven't got very many it won't be around the the cooker nose around the

round the cooking area and around the sink where the the way there is water

it's the tiles are already there yes so the ceramic surfaces that you can

wipe clean with tiles so it's only only the walls and it shouldn't be too bad

because well we we don't do lots of cooking with lots of moisture we just

eat dry cold food anyway I've got no alternative mr. Duncan because it's so

the plasters in such bad condition and anyway I'm going to say that I'm

completely blank mr. Duncan is going to put lots of glue on to make sure it

doesn't come off yes so I will put the advice but lots of paste on the

wallpaper so here we have my big parrot look at the size of those scissors they

are huge so these scissors are used for cutting the wallpaper but look at the

size of them they are they are huge scissors very long so you can cut very

long straight edges with them so there you can see a pair of lovely big wall

paper scissors for cutting strips of wallpaper Micah says I remember the

when water is splashed onto that surface you can easily wipe it clean so this is

corners so if you get lots of water lots of water everywhere you can easily wipe

down and the most disturbing thing that they do sometimes up there is they

off and you can hear the engine stop and then they restart the engine while it's

flying over the house I don't know why I I always feel a little nervous when I

hear that happen I always think one day maybe they will try to restart the plane

can you can get sunburned and skin cancer and I did have a nasty mold grow

on the top of my head a few years ago and I had to have it removed and the

doctor said make sure that you always go outside with a hat on hmm or Sun cream

and I was do so that's the main reason I wear a hat from the Sun I must say

today's livestream was only one hour long but we've we've had a lot of stuff

in it we've talked about health we've talked about decorating we've talked

about we've talked about expressions to do with brush we've talked about many

many different things today so yes and also again helped me wear a hat when

you're in the Sun because then it will protect your skin we don't just teach

you English we also give you worldly life

formation and advice by the way you don't run with sugars and where don't

run with scissors okay as mr. Duncan and I say always wear a hat yes don't it's

sunny outside don't run with sugar well if you've got hair you probably don't

need a hat if you run with sugar you will end up in

a very sticky situation that's a joke a lot of men would feel embarrassed to

wear a hat if they're bald over go no hair I'm bald I don't care but a lot of

men I've noticed this they feel embarrassed they think that it's not

manly to wear a hat so when it's something like this they wander around

outside exposing their very delicate skin to the harsh rays sunlight and they

could be now they could be getting all sorts of problems later down the road

such as skin cancer yes so lots and lots of health advice today

and don't forget we are not doctors even though I've got doctors even though even

though I've got my rubber gloves on today it looks as if I am about to give

someone a prostate exam not me I think I will try it on Steve after after we've
