wow i have just had the most crazy five minutes  

trying to log into my youtube account and can  i just say it was very difficult it was driving  

me crazy in fact here we go then yes we are back  together this is english addict coming to you live  

from the birthplace of the english  language which just happens to be england

hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how are  you today are you okay i hope so are you happy  

are you feeling happy today i  hope you are feeling super duper  

and yes we are back together again it is myself  mr duncan for those who don't know who i am  

and it would appear that there are still lots of  people on the planet who don't know who i am my  

name is duncan i talk about english i like the  english language ever such a lot one day i hope  

i can marry the english language and we  will live together happily ever after  

forever and ever i like english very much  i am not like the other english teachers  

there are many things that separate me from  the rest of human civilization and also all  

the other people on youtube teaching english  but i hope you will stay here with me and yes  

if you do have a sense of humour you are in the  right place however if you don't have a sense  

of humour i'm not sure if this is for you to be  honest if i was completely honest with you i would  

say that this might not be for you if you don't  have a sense of humour so that is the introduction  

out of the way yes we have made it all the  way to the middle of the week it is wednesday

is it okay are you having a good one i hope  you are something rather dramatic happened  

yesterday very close to where i live something  dramatic and also sad as well happened yesterday

appear that whilst i've been off youtube since  sunday it would appear that many of you have

can you see i am losing weight can you tell maybe  you can see it in my face i'm not sure but i am  

losing weight my exercise regime is continuing  and yes i have lost some extra weight that i  

have gained during the lockdown that myself and  many people on the planet have been going through  

during 2020 and also this year as well but  i have lost some weight do you think so  

now can you please leave a comment right now and  say mr duncan it looks as if you have lost weight  

but i have can you see can you see my face  does it look different does it look as if  

i've lost some weight now personally i think  i have i think i have been so well behaved

i have been a good boy over the past three  months i have started cutting down on the  

amount of junk that i eat i'm exercising a  lot more than i was i'm taking lots of walks  

but most of all i think the biggest change of  all is the change of diet which i i i used to do  

a long time ago but then of course you know  what happens you start off doing something  

with the best intention and then over time  you slowly slip back in to your old habits  

so it can be difficult if you are  trying to make a big change in your life  

it doesn't come easy it's like anything including  learning english all of these things take time and

effort effort that's the one that's the hardest  part of all i think is the effort that you have to

i can't believe it suddenly november arrives and  already on television there are lots of christmas  

commercials it would appear that people are  quite desperate this year to get your money  

to buy things which is ironic really when you  think about it it's quite ironic that here we are  

right now talking about trying to save the planet  and yet every year we we rush out we buy gifts for  

people maybe things that people don't even want or  need but we still buy them because we feel obliged  

to do it so uh to be honest with you i'm going to  be honest you know me i'm an honest man sometimes  

i say things that might obsess or irritate people  but i think sometimes buying gifts for people

is a waste of money and also  the resources of the planet  

so i know that is quite a big  generalization but i think sometimes  

celebrations like christmas you see it  is fun but we all feel obliged or forced  

to give things to other people i  think sometimes it is a little unfair  

that we expect so much from other people i  think that's part of the problem you see we all  

expect too much of each other especially  when it comes to celebrations maybe birthdays  

christmas maybe another type of celebration  maybe a wedding i think weddings  

are now crazy they are weddings are crazy people  spend a huge amount of money on their weddings  

thousands of pounds and then this is the best  part they actually send a list of things they want

to the guests so you can choose a gift  that you want to give to the happy couple  

after their wedding so they can enjoy it and  use it now i think all of this is a little bit  

what's the word i'm looking for well i think there  is a lot of pressure being put on people to give  

gifts when in fact sometimes just having the  company having the company of another human being  

feeling the warmth be it physical or maybe just  the sound of another person's voice someone near  

to you or maybe someone just saying hello i just  thought i would give you a phone call to say  

i'm thinking of you that's all you need to do so  i think nowadays we we often find that there is  

too much pressure too much pressure to actually do  these things to give gifts and it's all the time  

it's all the time whatever you do people have pets  now and they have to celebrate the pet's birthday

and even the dog or the cat wants a gift

the owner feels obliged to give  a present to the cat or the dog  

as if it matters the dog doesn't  care the cat couldn't care less

very strange don't you think so i think there is a  lot of waste a lot of wasteful behaviour connected  

to celebrations such as birthdays and especially  

christmas or maybe if there is another festival  or something else something else you would observe

there is often gifts involved and i think  sometimes the pressure of having to give  

gifts to people can can drive you crazy don't  you think what do you think about that am i  

am i right or am i talking a load of rubbish  please comment talking of which we are talking  

all about comments today making comments about  a person a thing something you've seen maybe  

you've left a comment on a website  these days it is possible to comment  

on almost anything when you think about  it it doesn't have to be a big thing  

or a small thing it can be anything even here  on youtube quite often people excuse me a moment

i don't know what that was sorry  about that i will try again  

people can leave comments anywhere  at any time for any reason

agree with you about the wedding costs  well i here's the thing about weddings  

i have attended weddings in the past of  people who are now no longer together

so all of that effort all of the expense all of  the extravagance a complete waste because the  

couple getting married are no longer together  for various reasons which i won't go into but  

it can happen so i think if you love someone  get married yes by all means get married  

show your love for each other and maybe you can  have some gifts but they don't have to be big  

extravagant gifts just something small and that's  it really and then you can save the money that  

you would spend on your wedding and spend it on  something else spending spend it on your new home  

spend it on something that might be useful maybe  put it in a savings bank for one of your children  

so your children when they are born when  they pop out you have some money for them  

florence says i don't really like going to  weddings for me it is a little boring i have been  

to some weddings in the past and i don't really  know anyone there i didn't know anyone there  

i sometimes go to weddings that i've been invited  to by another person and then i go to the wedding  

and and then i realize i i don't know anyone there  

i i wonder why i'm there however there  is a good side there is a very good side  

to attending a wedding lots of free  food that's it funerals are very similar  

something i would love to start doing is is  just going to funerals even if i even if i  

don't know the person or the family i could go to  the funeral and there's lots and lots of free food  

and all you have to do is turn up in your  black suit and then you just wait patiently  

for the food just a little tip there if you are  looking to find a way of getting some free food

now if it is a special birthday maybe it is a big  birthday maybe it is your 50th 60 maybe you are 60  

like mr steve was so if you remember i gave mr  steve some nice presents for his 60th birthday  

because it's a big thing when you are 60 it's  quite a big thing i'm not 60 yet but i will be

i will be it is coming my way but i'm not quite 60  not yet anyway but if it's a big celebration if it  

is a big thing like a birthday a special occasion  something really big then maybe you can buy some  

gifts or a small gift or something nice for the  person to treasure forever so yes that is nice  

but i think sometimes we expect too much of  people we want too much from other people

you are always looking for food well this is it  this is it you see it is my one weakness that  

is the reason why i got fat that's the reason  why my stomach kept getting larger and larger  

and the reason why many of my trousers no  longer fit around my waist so that's it you see  

so one of the main reasons  for losing weight i was trying  

to fit into my trousers again i have a lovely  pair of trousers a pair of jeans and they are very  

skinny skinny jeans they are very much in fashion  the only problem is i can't wear them because i'm  

too fat my belly is too big so i can't pull my  jeans up and i can't fatten them hit the front

because my stomach is rather large so  that is my aim my aim is to lose weight  

and to be able to fit into my skinny jeans so  i know and i will know that i've lost enough  

weight when i can pull my lovely and pull my  skinny jeans up and fasten them around my belly  

but at the moment it's not possible so even  though i've lost some weight you can tell you can  

you can i'm sorry i know i'm  being very narcissistic today  

but i i think i think i have lost some weight what  do you think do you think i've lost some weight

chubby chubby that's a great word chubby if a  person is chubby it means they have a little  

bit of extra weight we often think of babies  newborn babies can be quite chubby chubby

to wear skinny jeans is required to be  really thin you are near to getting it  

well i hope so i hope so i think it will take  another two or three months so i am talking  

about next year really i hope by the beginning  of next year i will be able to fit in to my  

skinny jeans i will be able to wear them next  spring i will be walking around much wenlock in  

my skinny jeans showing off my new slim physique  does that sound like a good idea i hope so

i think so i think being happy sometimes is a  thing that is viewed as being rather strange  

sometimes when i'm walking if i go out walking  quite often i will have a big smile on my face  

i will i love smiling so as i walk around quite  often i will have a big smile on my face and then  

sometimes people will look at me as if i've gone  crazy but i don't think there's anything wrong  

with that i think having a smile on your face  is perfectly normal to be honest richard says  

you must buy some different genes no no that's  cheating i can't cheat all i'm going to do is lose  

weight that is my aim i have a goal in my mind  and i suppose normally at this time of year people  

start thinking about the new year the following  year however my one big wish for next year  

is to reach my goal of losing weight and i  can put my lovely skinny jeans on a lot uh  

during the spring months hello beatrice you will  work to lose weight and i will work to gain it  

we can have an exchange yes well i'm not  sure if i want to encourage that to be honest

oh claudia says when when a child opens  a box and they smile that is the reason  

for giving a present well i suppose  

for children yes maybe i can make an exception for  children because at christmas time well christmas  

is for children when you think about it but  the problem is lots of adults also expect gifts

they they also want santa claus or father  christmas to come down their chimney and  

leave something nice at the bottom of their  christmas tree but yes you are right i suppose  

i'm not going to disagree with you today  we are looking at comments making comments  

giving comments offering an opinion on  something or maybe you are criticizing someone  

we will be talking about that in a few moments but  a quick break and then i will be back this is an

today's edition is what we call a pilot show a  pilot show is a program that has been made to test  

how well it works you make a pilot show to see  how the audience reacts to it that is what i am  

doing today but enough of that let's get on with  the first ever mr duncan's full english right now

these are my socks i have many pairs of socks  there is something wrong with this pair can  

you see the problem these socks have holes  in them they are worn out if something is  

worn out then we can say that it is no  longer useful it has become damaged and  

useless the thing has been used so many times  it has become damaged you can feel worn out too  

if you are tired after working hard i  have had such a busy day i'm worn out

can you see the letter next to me it is the  letter zed in british english we usually call this  

the letter zed in american english this  letter is pronounced z which can cause  

some confusion for those looking at  the alphabet in other countries zak  

zebra zip zither zone zoo buzz crazy  dazzle doze fizz jazz maze nuzzle zed or z

oh blue socks i knew you well but  lately you had started to smell  

to part with you so soon makes me think  if you leave me now will i miss your stink

the word eco-friendly comes from a smile and we  need an eco-friendly world a lot of people at  

the moment talking about the cop 26 which is all  about saving the world protecting the environment  

and making changes however here we are  now i think it's day four today and still  

we haven't really heard anything that sounds as if  we're going to change our habits we have countries  

around the world that are actually still in the  stage of development so there are people still  

wanting to have the same lifestyle as many other  people do they want to have fresh wooden ridding  

water they want to have electricity they  want to be able to buy things they want to  

they want to be able to drive their car they  want to have a car they want to have things  

but to do that we have to build factories  we have to create things we have to build  

machines we have to generate electricity  to power all of this so i think because  

there are countries that are still expanding and  developing i don't know how we can make changes  

it's a very tough one i think so it is not an easy  thing to sort out and i think as usual there will  

be lots of intention but very little action and  that is what normally happens every single time

lots of world leaders flying from  around the world on their private jets  

which seems a little bit strange really  when you think about it it's rather ironic

i have to be honest i don't blame him sometimes  those speeches can go on for a very long time  

especially when prince charles is talking so  don't worry if you do feel as if you are going  

to fall asleep whilst prince charles  is talking don't worry that's normal

whenever you can wear your jeans it means you  have lost weight i am still a very long way from  

doing that i will be honest with you i am a very  long way from wearing my jeans my skinny jeans  

but i know in my heart and in my mind one  day i will wear those jeans again as long  

as i keep losing weight as long as i get myself  slim and fit everything will be okay i think so

more than six or seven birthdays so then they  can invite the girls to their birthday parties  

well i suppose if you are a teenager if you are  an adolescent then quite often there there will be  

many social situations where you might want to  meet a girl or a boy you might go along to a party  

you might wish to find someone maybe for a long  relationship or just something short and casual oh

but is it really your birthday how do you prove it  

how can you prove that it's really your  birthday how do you do that i don't know

the student's brain is like the bermuda triangle  the information goes in and then it is never found

learning anything is remembering it sometimes i  have difficulty remembering things facts figures  

dates so all of those things can go  into your brain but then they get

it's very strange how being over a certain weight  can also make you unhealthy so it isn't just about  

being able to put my skinny jeans on again  even though i'm looking forward to doing that  

it's also about staying healthy as i get  older as i approach the twilight of my life

some strange english words would you like to  have a look at some strange english words anyway  

here they are on the screen now i  think today we will just have a couple  

because we have a lot to get through we still  have a lot of things to look at so today is  

first unusual english word oh mr duncan this  is a very unusual word the word is tweak tweak  

i like that word it sounds interesting if you  suddenly grab or pinch something whilst pulling it

you tweak this word can also be  used as a noun and as a verb as well  

so the word tweak to make a slight  change or an adjustment to something  

a small alteration made to something is  a tweak tweak tweet tweak the word is  

often used in engineering or with anything  related to a slight change in how something  

works so if you make a slight change or a  small alteration we can describe that as a

tweak tweak i like that word actually it's a nice  word our second strange word today is dormant  

dormant our second unusual word today is dormant  to be in a state of deep sleep or hibernation  

to be alive but not growing and in active items  so if something is inactive it is inactive  

it is not doing anything but it is still  alive a disease that no longer causes symptoms  

but is not cured so something that  maybe has disappeared maybe the symptoms  

have vanished but you still have the  disease and perhaps also you can still pass  

the disease on to other people so something that  is dormant something that is in a state of deep  

sleep or hibernation so the word dormant is an  adjective it describes the way something appears

i was asking for your comments not necessarily  compliments you don't have to give compliments  

so maybe you think i haven't lost any weight  maybe you think mr duncan you still look as big  

as you did last week or last month or  last year but today we are looking at  

comments and criticism two things that  often go together when we think of comments  

we often think of things that we make a comment on  we talk about a certain thing in relation to our  

experience of it maybe your point of view maybe  your thoughts on a certain subject or a thing

a comment is a remark made in response  to something so quite often we will offer  

a comment we will give a comment as a response  you will you will very rarely comment on something

without there being a reason for it  something you've seen something you've  

heard something you've experienced in the  past maybe something you've just experienced  

maybe a good thing or a bad thing maybe you  went somewhere maybe you visited a certain place  

maybe you had a meal at a restaurant and  you are giving your comments about it

an observation made regarding something  observed or experienced so again  

something you see or something you  experienced quite often you will offer  

a comment about it maybe you are asked to give  a comment maybe you are asked to give your own  

personal comment about what you thought  of that experience did you enjoy the meal  

did you enjoy the show what did you think  of my english lesson was it interesting  

please leave a comment so an observation made  regarding something observed or experienced  

commentary given or made either in  writing or verbally is a comment  

so you can write your comment you can  state your comment verbally you can say it  

so what do you think what did you think  of the show what did you think of the meal  

well i thought the meal was okay it was all right  unfortunately the steak was a little bit dry

so i might be giving my comment but also i might  be giving criticism as well at the same time so  

quite often you might find that your comment  can also be criticism and that's the reason why  

we often associate those two  things with each other a person  

will make a comment a person makes a  comment they make a comment you comment  

on something they comment on something a thing an  event an experience whether they liked it or not

to give an opinion is to comment and yes this  is true quite often when we give an opinion that  

in itself is a comment so whatever it is you are  commenting on quite often it will also be stated  

as an opinion what you feel or what you think  a comment can be in the form of a compliment  

or as criticism so as i just said you can say  something nice or maybe say something that is  

honest to be honest when you are giving  a comment quite often people will want  

your honest opinion when you make a comment to  be critical about something is to give a thorough  

evaluation oh so if you are being critical it  means you are looking at that particular thing  

and then you are giving your opinion  your comment is being given honestly

the commenter expresses their opinion quite  often as an expert so there are people who  

make a living there are people whose job is to  give comments maybe a person who is an expert  

in food maybe they are an expert in art  an expert in music maybe their background  

involves that particular field they are in a  position where they can give comments we often  

describe this person as a critic a critic is a  person who offers their professional comments  

or their professional opinion we often describe  them as a critic maybe a film critic a food critic  

theatre cricket or maybe an art critic  many types of criticism can be given  

a critical comment is not necessarily  negative so if you are looking at something  

or evaluating something a particular thing  it doesn't necessarily have to be bad  

maybe there are bad points or negative points but  also there might be some positive things as well  

quite often when you comment on  something you will give the good things  

your good opinions your positive thoughts and also  now and again your negative thoughts and opinions

we often describe a type of comment as critique  oh i like that word critique so when we say a  

person is offering critique it means they are  offering their comment their personal appearance  

their opinion a person might comment on something  trivial like the weather so you can comment  

on something very trivial oh it's a bit  dark today it's a bit dull it's a bit dismal  

isn't it cold we are commenting on  how the weather is making us feel  

we are showing that we are not happy with  the weather we are making a comment maybe  

the weather is nice maybe it is a lovely  day so perhaps your comment will be positive

a comment can be made concerning a world event  or an important issue so it can be anything a  

lot of people at the moment are commenting on  environmental issues saving the planet a lot of  

people have their own comments their own opinions  their own points of view about what they think

a lot of world leaders are commenting and  giving their opinions on something that  

a lot of people think is very important  a comment is normally given honestly  

and i think this is where comments or giving  a comment can sometimes get you into trouble  

if you want a person to give you  their comment quite often you  

expect that person to give you an  honest comment what they really think

but is that true do we really want  to hear the truth a truthful comment  

might not be received well we can also say that  it is not well received so if something is not  

well received it means people did not like  it a person did not receive that comment well  

they were upset by the comment it was not received  well it was not well received the truth expressed  

might seem harsh or unfair so when  we talk about a harsh comment a harsh  

criticism or maybe we might see it as unfair an  unfair criticism or an unfair comment that is  

made against someone so i suppose it is possible  if a person is criticizing or making comments  

about another person's work maybe sometimes  they can be too harsh maybe their criticism  

is unfair and it does happen sometimes people  have reasons why they will give an unfair comment

their own personal reasons if you ask for a  comment then you must be prepared for criticism  

never ask a person for their comments if you  don't want to hear criticism because you might  

actually also have to do that as well you see  you might have to accept the harsh criticism  

so if you ask for a comment then you must  be prepared to receive criticism as well  

some people cannot take criticism this is true

perhaps you in the past have received criticism  for something maybe you think that the criticism  

or the comment you received was unfair or harsh it  can happen if you are in the public eye then you  

must be prepared for negative comments one of the  first things i realized when i started doing this  

on youtube 15 years ago was that sometimes  people can offer harsh or hurtful comments  

they can say things that might be hurtful  or they that might cause upset or hurt

for your comments today we're getting quite a  few comments coming through thank you very much  

i always like to teach or to take you through  a certain comment or a certain subject  

and today we are talking about comments actual  comments making comments so if you are in the  

public eye if you are a famous person if you  are doing something that lots of people can see  

then you have to accept that sometimes  people are not going to like what you do  

they will offer their own opinions  their comments their criticism

a comment is a remark an observation a note  commentary or a statement so a statement quite  

often is something that is given in response  to something or in defence of something  

or if you are talking about your own  opinion of a thing that you've seen  

and also we can say observation can also be a  comment you are offering your observation and  

as i mentioned earlier we had the word critique  i like that word by the way critique a critique

are all forms of giving critique you  are offering your own point of view  

how you feel about that particular thing did  you enjoy it was it good do you think it was bad  

how well did they do did they do a good job or  was it a load of rubbish there are many ways of  

offering your comments don't forget you can also  offer your comment underneath this video later on

i'm getting some questions today about moderators  yes i have i have four active moderators  

who often keep an eye they make sure  that everything on the live chat  

is super duper so it is my choice i normally  choose the moderators but at the moment we have  

four regular moderators and to be honest  with you at the moment that's all we need

nadi hello nadi i am nadi from russia  hello to russia can you believe i have  

quite a lot of people watching in russia  believe it or not there are a lot of people  

watching in russia and that part  of the world as well definitely  

thank you very much for your company i'm going in  a moment as you can see the sun is out everything  

behind me is looking quite autumnal at the moment  you will often notice when i'm doing my live  

streams you will see that there is a a road behind  me a road right behind me with lots of traffic  

going by yesterday afternoon there was a serious  road crash on that road that you can see behind me  

so you will notice that the traffic is now  moving there are cars and lorries moving  

on this road unfortunately yesterday there was  a very serious road accident on on that actual  

road and it was closed all night sadly there  were fatalities two people lost their lives  

in the car crash it was rather sad to  hear and also quite quite worrying to see  

there were lots of helicopters arriving  to take away the injured people and  

it was it was quite dramatic in fact i was able  to film some of it just a little bit of it from  

my window but a really sad event that took place  yesterday right behind me on the road that you  

can see going by on my live streams very sad very  tragic and sadly two people lost their lives which  

always brings me around to the thought that life  is so fragile you must live every light every day  

of your life and realize how special it is but  a really upsetting event yesterday very sad  

i am going now i will see you on sunday mr  duncan what do you mean sunday you should be back  

tomorrow no i'm not back tomorrow because october  has finished october has finished so i won't be  

with you every weekday i will be with you on  sunday from 2 p.m uk time i will put the details

with the the awful road accident  that happened just behind me and

it is not nice it really makes you  realize how fragile life can be
