10 Essential Phrasal Verbs for LOVE and RELATIONSHIPS

Eat Sleep Dreamers, welcome back to another lesson with me Tom. Today we're getting romantic,

that's right. We're gong to be looking at the ten essential phrasal verbs for love and

relationships. You're going to like this one.

Are you ready to learn ten phrasal verbs to do with love and relationships? Because these

are going to be super useful. Now before we do, I think we need to get in to the romantic

mood. So perhaps a little quote about love might get us in the mood.

Wow! That was deep! Who wrote that? Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber? OK! Would you like

me to sing it? No, you are alright. You don't need to sing it. No o, you are ok. Are you sure?

Quickly.

Let's look at our ten phrasal verbs and we're going to work through the stages of a relationship.

Before we start I just want to remind you guys that I've done a video explaining how

Ok, our first phrasal verb, or this one is a multi-word verb because there are multiple

words. It's to get on with someone. This means to have a good relationship with them.

To enjoy their company. Now you can get on with anyone, it could be a family member,

it could be a friend or it could be a romantic relationship as well. So this one we can kind

of use with anyone that we want. So an example sentence.

So that's saying that me and Katie,

Katie and I have a good relationship, we enjoy each other's company.

So maybe you get on

with someone and then you want to make it a romantic thing so you would ask somebody

out. To ask somebody out. This is to invite them on a date. Now when we use the word date

we mean a romantic situation, ok? So you wouldn't go on a date with your friend. That's kind

of, you'd meet, go out for dinner or whatever, it's not called a date. We reserve that for

a romantic relationship.

So hopefully she says yes, then we go on a date. Go on just

means to do the activity so to do the date.

So the date went well, ok. We had a really

nice time and maybe we went on a few more dates and then we start to become a couple.

So then you are going out.

So to be going out means to be dating, to be a couple. So

after a few months, maybe a little longer than that we grow really strong feelings and

we fall in love. Right, so if you fall in love your feelings become really strong, don't

they? And this person is your everything. So we fall in love.

I like the fact that we

use the verb fall because it suggests that we have no control. It's not a feeling that

we have any power over, it's out of our control, we fall in love. We are taken there because

of our feelings and our desires. So I quite like that, it's quite a nice phrase if you

think about it. It's quite a romantic idea that it's, you know, this is nothing to do

with us, this is just our hearts and how it feels. Uh oh! As we all know love isn't always

a smooth journey. Sometimes there are problems along the way. So if you have an argument

you could say that you fall out with someone. That means to have an argument and to not

be so close. So it could be with a friendship as well.

That means we had an argument and

we're kind of not really friends at the moment. This could be a temporary situation, we could

be friends again. It could also be a longer term situation as well. And you can also fall

out with your partner. Something else that happens in relationships is that maybe we

don't argue necessarily but slowly you change paths. Maybe you become distant from your

partner. Maybe you don't share the same interests anymore or you just aren't as close as you

used to be. So we say to drift apart. And so if you think about two people being together

and then slowly over time they drift apart, they slowly have different interests, they

feel differently about each other. An example sentence.

And that means that your relationship

isn't as strong as it used to be, it's becoming weaker. You could also use that for a friendship

as well. For a relationship as well. So you could use it for a romantic relationship or

a friendship as well. To drift apart from someone. It could be about distance so maybe

you don't see them very often. You are not in contact very often. There are lots of reasons

why we might drift apart from someone. Uh oh! What happens when someone in the relationship

chooses to be with someone outside of the relationship? Ok, this is called to cheat

on someone. So your partner decides that they want to be with someone else. It could be

for one night or it could be longer term. So this is to cheat on someone.

And maybe,

eventually you might decide to break up. And that is to end the relationship. We've got

break up and also split up. Those are exactly the same meaning.

So that's the end of a relationship.

To break up with someone or to split up with someone. But wait! There's still hope! Because

maybe you decide that actually yes this person is the right one for me and so you get back

together. And this means you then reunite as a couple. And romance is back again! So

you get back together.

So that just means they are reunited as a couple. But what if

they don't get back together? What if they decide that they are best apart? Well there's

a few phrasal verbs we use to talk about that process after a relationship. One of them

is to get over someone. And this is the kind of emotion because it's an emotional thing

isn't it when we've broken up with someone. They are still kind of in our hearts a little

bit. Maybe their memories some of the things they used to do. So it takes time for us to

feel less sad. After a relationship we feel sad, don't we? And we kind of miss the person

that we used to be with. I mean, sometimes. So this process is all about getting over

the other person. It's about kind of, recovering from the relationship and feeling more positive.

So at the beginning you feel very sad, you miss them and with time you get over them.

You recover from the sadness and you become happier more positive about the relationship.

And maybe then you can think about another relationship.

Now that's a lot of phrasal

verbs guys to do with love and relationships. What I want you to do is to try and use one

of those phrasal verbs in a sentence in the comments below. So for example you could say

'I get on with my colleagues' 'I get on really well with my colleagues' for example or I've
