In today's lesson, we're going to look at the expression 'used to',

which I find many of my students use incorrectly.

starting with Tip number 1.

So, Tip number 1 is to use 'used to' only for a habit or a fact in the past,

따라서 팁 번호 1은 과거의 습관이나 사실에만 'used to'를 사용하는 것입니다.

for example...

here we have a habit in the past: I used to run on Sundays.

과거: 나는 일요일에 뛰곤 했어요.

When you say this,

당신이 이것을 말할 때

you mean that you don't run on Sundays anymore.

당신은 더 이상 일요일에 뛰지 않는다는 것을 의미합니다.

It's over.

끝났어.

A fact in the past: She used to live in the countryside.

과거 사실: 그녀는 시골에 살았습니다.

When you hear this,

이 말을 들으면

it means that she doesn't live in the countryside anymore.

Now, a couple of quick grammar points

이제

when you use 'used to'

'used to'를 사용할 때 몇 가지 빠른 문법 포인트는

is that it's a fixed expression.

고정 표현이라는 것입니다.

So, it doesn't change with the pronoun. 

그래서 대명사로 바뀌지 않습니다.

Whether it's 'I' or 'she' or 'he' or 'we',

'나'든 '그녀'든 '그'든 '우리'든

it's 'used to'. No change.

'익숙하다'입니다. 변경 없음.

And after 'used to', we use the base verb,

그리고 'used to' 뒤에는

the infinitive without 'to'.

'to'가 없는 부정사인 기본 동사를 사용합니다.

So 'I used to run.'

그래서 '달리곤 했어요.'

'She used to live in the countryside.'

'그녀는 시골에서 살았습니다.'

So, that's how you use 'used to'.

그래서 'used to'를 사용하는 방법입니다.

A common mistake that I hear my students make  

학생들이 저지르는 흔한 실수는

is using this expression 'used to' without the 'd'. 

'd' 없이 'used to'라는 표현을 사용하는 것입니다.

So, 'use to' for a habit or a fact in the present. 

그래서 'use to'는 현재의 습관이나 사실을 나타냅니다.

For example...

예를 들어... 다음

I hear sentences like:

과 같은 문장을 듣습니다.

Now, I use to run on Fridays.

Now, I use to run on Fridays.

Or: Now she uses to live in a city.

또는: 이제 그녀는 도시에 살곤 합니다.

You must avoid this!

이것을 피해야 합니다!

This expression does not exist in the present.

이 표현은 현재 존재하지 않습니다.

You can never say things like this. 

절대 이런 말을 할 수 없습니다.

So, I suppose you're asking yourself:

그래서 스스로에게 묻고 있다고 생각합니다.

How do we express a habit or a fact in the present?

which is the Present Simple tense:

현재 단순 시제:

Now I run on Fridays.

Now I run on Fridays라고 답변하셨기를 바랍니다.

Now she lives in a city.

So, let's look at the correct sentences

because we need to add an 's' to the second sentence.

두 번째 문장에 's'를 추가해야 하므로 올바른 문장을 살펴보겠습니다.

Here we are:

여기 있습니다:

Habit or fact in the present:

현재의 습관 또는 사실:

Present Simple tense:

현재 단순 시제:

Now, I run on Fridays.

Now, I run on Fridays.

Now, she lives in a city.

지금 그녀는 도시에 살고 있다.

Now, when it's a habit, 

이제 습관,

something that you do regularly,

규칙적으로 하는 일이면

you can add the adverb 'usually' to your sentence.

문장에 부사 '보통'을 추가할 수 있습니다.

So you can say:

따라서 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다.

Now, I run on Fridays.

저는 금요일에 러닝을 합니다.

Or: Now I usually run on Fridays. 

또는: 지금은 보통 금요일에 달린다.

So, Tip 2 is about a spelling mistake.

그래서 Tip 2는 철자 오류에 관한 것입니다.

Remember our sentence was 'I used to run on Sundays.'

'I used to run on Sundays'라는 문장을 기억하세요.

Now, we want to make this sentence negative or question.

이제 이 문장을 부정문 또는 의문문으로 만들고 싶습니다.

It's an expression in the past, so we use 'didn't' and 'did'.

과거형 표현이므로 'didn't'와 'did'를 사용합니다.

One thing you need to do to avoid this spelling mistake

이 철자 오류를 피하기 위해 해야 할 한 가지는 다른 과거 시제와 마찬가지로

is to drop the 'd',

'd'를 삭제하는 것입니다.

like you would do with any other past tense:

I didn't use to run on Sundays.

I didn't use to run on Sundays.

And: Did she use to live in the countryside?

그리고: 그녀는 시골에서 살았습니까?

Okay! That's the end of Tip 2, short one.

Let's look at our Tip number 3, a very important one!

Tip number 3 is that the expression

'used' to and be 'used to'

'used' to 'used to'라는 표현이 이

these two expressions are completely different.

두 표현이 완전히 다르다는 것입니다.

They're different in their idea,

아이디어가 다르고

and they're different in their grammar.

문법도 다릅니다.

So reminder: 

따라서 알림:

'used to' refers to a habit or fact in the past.

'used to'는 과거의 습관이나 사실을 나타냅니다.

'be used to' means to 'be okay with',

'be used to'는 '괜찮다', '

to 'be comfortable with', 'not mind'.  

편안하다', '신경쓰지 않다'를 의미합니다.

For example...

예를 들어... 다음과 같이

when you say: I am used to spicy food.

말할 때: 나는 매운 음식에 익숙합니다.

you're saying: I'm okay with spicy food.

당신의 말: 나는 매운 음식이 괜찮습니다.

I'm comfortable eating spicy food. 

나는 매운 음식을 먹는 것이 편하다.

When I eat spicy food, I don't experience any problems.

매운 음식을 먹어도 문제가 없습니다.

That's the idea of 'be used to'. 

그것은 '익숙하다'는 생각입니다.

So, let's look at the grammar of this expression.  

자, 이 표현의 문법을 살펴봅시다.

Here, the main thing is the verb 'be'.

여기서 중요한 것은 동사 'be'입니다.

'be used to'.

'하는데 사용될'.

So, that's what gets conjugated.

그래서, 그것이 결합되는 것입니다.

I am used to...

I am used to...

She is used to...

She is used to...

We are used to...

We are used to...

If you want to make it negative, you just add 'not'

부정으로 만들려면 'not'을 추가하면 됩니다. '

because it's the verb 'to be'.

to be' 동사이기 때문입니다.

I am not used to...

나는 익숙하지 않아...

You can put it in any tense you want. 

당신이 원하는 어떤 시제로든 쓸 수 있습니다.

You conjugate the verb to be in another tense:

동사를 다른 시제로 활용합니다:

She was used to... 

She was used to... 다음과 같이

You can say: I will be used to...

말할 수 있습니다: I will be used to...

I will get used to...

I will get used to...

So, that's for the grammar.

그래서 문법을 위한 것입니다.

Now, a very common mistake still related to grammar

여전히 문법과 관련된 매우 흔한 실수는

is this: 

다음과 같습니다.

saying: I am used to eat spicy food.

나는 매운 음식을 먹는 데 익숙합니다.

So, what has happened here is that we are using

그래서 여기서 일어난 일은

this expression followed by a verb.

이 표현 뒤에 동사를 사용하고 있다는 것입니다.

If you do that, you need to use NOT the base verb

그렇게 하려면 기본 동사가

but the gerund form:

아니라 동명사 형태를 사용해야 합니다.

I am used to eating spicy food.

I am used to eating 매운 음식.

So, let's end the lesson with a quick summary of the three tips.

그럼 세 가지 도움말을 간단히 요약하면서 수업을 마치겠습니다.

Tip 1:  

팁 1:

Do not use 'used to' for present habits and facts.

현재의 습관이나 사실에 'used to'를 사용하지 마세요.

Tip number 2:

Write 'use to'. Drop the 'd' after 'did' and 'didn't' when you make negative and questions.

'사용'이라고 쓰세요. 부정문과 의문문을 만들 때 'd'와 'dn't' 다음에 'd'를 떨어뜨립니다.

Remember that 'used to' and 'be used to'

'used to'와 'be used to'는

are completely different, both in meaning and structure.

It's time now for our error correction exercises.

I have four sentences for you with a mistake in them,

and I'd like you to correct them.

So, let's look at the first sentence.

그럼 첫 번째 문장부터 볼까요?

The sentence is:

문장은 다음과 같습니다.

Nowadays, we use to eat fish twice a week.

요즘 우리는 일주일에 두 번 생선을 먹곤 합니다.

What's wrong with this sentence?  

이 문장에 무슨 문제가 있습니까?

So, obviously 'nowadays', we're talking about a habit  in the present.

그래서 분명히 '요즘', 우리는 현재의 습관에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다 .

So what did we say?

그래서 우리는 무엇을 말했습니까?

We cannot use this expression for a habit in the present.

현재의 습관에는 이 표현을 사용할 수 없습니다.

What must we do? 

무엇을 해야 하나요?

Just use the Present Simple tense:

단순 현재 시제를 사용하세요:

Nowadays, we eat fish twice a week.

요즘 우리는 일주일에 두 번 생선을 먹습니다.

So, let's look at the correct sentence:

이제 올바른 문장을 살펴보겠습니다.

Nowadays, we eat fish twice a week.

요즘에는 일주일에 두 번 생선을 먹습니다.

But, because it's a habit,

하지만 습관이기 때문에 원하는 경우 문장에

you can add the expression, the adverb, the frequency adverb  

표현, 부사, 빈도 부사 '보통'을 추가할 수 있습니다

'usually' to your sentence as well,

if you want:

We usually eat fish twice a week.

.

Okay! let's look at sentence number 2:

좋아요! 문장 2번을 봅시다:

She didn't used to work here.

그녀는 여기서 일하지 않았습니다.

What's wrong with this sentence?

이 문장에 무슨 문제가 있습니까?

Correct it.

정정하십시오.

I'm sure you got this one.  

나는 당신이 이것을 가지고 있다고 확신합니다.

We are using the sentence in the negative with 'didn't'.

'dn't'와 함께 부정적인 문장을 사용하고 있습니다.

Therefore, there should be no 'd' here.

따라서 여기에는 'd'가 없어야 합니다.

Let's look at the correct sentence: 

올바른 문장을 살펴보겠습니다.

She didn't use to work here.

그녀는 여기서 일하지 않았습니다.

Okay!

Let's look at sentence number 3:

I'm not used to wake up early.

There's a mistake.

How should we correct this?

I'm sure you got this one as well.

We're using the expression 'I'm not used to'.

우리는 'I'm not used to'라는 표현을 사용하고 있습니다.

So, it's the expression 'be used to',

따라서 'be used to'라는 표현이므로

and therefore this must not be in the base verb form,

but in the.....

아니라 .....

gerund form:

동명사 형태:

I'm not used to waking up early.  

I'm not used to wake up early.

And finally,

그리고 마지막으로

sentence number 4:  

문장 번호 4:

In the nineties, he used to working as an accountant. 

90년대에 그는 회계사로 일했습니다.

The expression 'used to',

but the mistake is using the gerund here.

After the expression 'used to',

we use the base verb.

So, that's the correct sentence:

In the nineties, he used to work as an accountant.
