Verb Patterns in English Using WATCH (Did Jack Make a Mistake?)

Now yesterday. I did a live lesson where

talked about going to the beach to watch

the sun go down. After this lesson, I had

so many questions about how I conjugated

the verb 'go'. People asked me if you should

say instead: to watch the sun goes down.

However, that is incorrect because if you

look at this sentence what we have here

is a verb following another verb. When

this happens there are certain rules to

follow and it's very difficult, this

subject, I've talked about in the past

I've talked about how to learn these

patterns you just need lots of

repetition. But i will explain how to use

it in this case and give you more

examples. So, if you look at the sentence:

we watched the Sun go down, then what

this is is: the verb watch plus an object

plus the bare infinitive. The bare infinitive

just means the infinitive without 'to' - we

watched - that is the verb watch - the sun - the

object - go - bare infinitive. We watched the

sun go down.

So, this is a pattern that we have for

watch, note however, that we can also use

the gerund, and sometimes this changes the

meaning slightly. I'll leave some notes

about that in the description. But for

now here are some more examples: I

watched him cook dinner

I watched him cook dinner. I heard him

say that. I heard him say that. I see them

do it all the time. I see them do it all

the time. Like I said, it's all about

practice -

it's all about getting the repetition

and seen these verbs and the verb

patterns they have on a consistent basis.

And you can do this through everything

that you do, you know, the next time that

you read a book

try to notice these verb patterns; try to

notice how when you use two verbs

together

you can use things like the infinitive,

the gerund, or the example that I just

showed you. And to help you get some more

practice,

please leave some examples below using

the verb 'watch'. So, use the verb 'watch'

and then use another verb after that.

That will help you get writing practice

and I'll go down and correct a few of

those examples for you if you make
