Future Perfect in English: How and When to Use & Examples

This is Jack from tofluency.com and look at this post that I published on my Facebook

page: complete the sentence: by January 2018, I... so, I asked people in the to

fluency Facebook community to complete this sentence. To give me some examples.

Now, I received lots of great examples some using different types of tenses -

what I was looking for was this: examples using the future perfect ok the future

perfect. Now the future perfect is one of those tenses that is used in specific

cases, so it's not used that often but we do use it when we're talking about a

completed action before a date or another action in the future. So, a

completed action before a specific point in the future. Do you want to see a

little drawing that might help you? Because here it is... so you can see here

the arrow showing time. You can see the point where it says now and also the

point where it says January 18. So, that's that specific point in the future and

this action can be completed at any point before that date. So, all those X's

show the possibility of when this action is going to be complete. Now, that might

sound quite confusing - I wanted to give you the explanation but the examples are

really going to help you. So, this is what one person said ok somebody in the

community said this: by January 2018, I will have become a great English speaker.

By January 18 I will have become a great English speaker. So, this might happen

tomorrow which is fantastic it might happen in late December- but we're not

really concerned with when it's going to happen but by which point in the future

it's going to happen. So, by January 2018 I will have become a great English

speaker. Here is another example: by January 2018 I will have finished my

degree. This is another example left by somebody in the ToFluency Facebook

community. Now here's an example that my wife and I use all the time: by the time

we get there they will have left. By the time we get there they will have left. So,

usually one of us is very anxious about leaving the house. We want to leave the

house quickly. We don't want to be late and with two children and two dogs it

can be difficult to leave the house. So, if we are worried about being late one

of us says: come on, let's go. By the time we get there they will have left. And in

this example we're meeting friends but we are concerned that they will have

left by the time we get there. Now I want to give you an example using a different

tense just to show you that English can be quite flexible: by the time we get

there it will be over. It will be over. So, we're just using will here to express

the same idea. By the time we get there it will be over. And as always to help

you with this look at lots of other examples and when you're reading books,

when you are watching TV, listening to podcasts or doing anything
