What are COMPOUND words? Learn English about how to use compound words

i'm teacher john and i'm here to help you become  great at learning english today's video is about  

compound words which i think is a very interesting  subject because we use compound words a lot  

in our daily speaking and it can sometimes be  confusing or difficult to see if something is a  

compound word or if it's just a normal adjective  a noun so today we're going to learn about that  

all right so let's get started so  right now you might be wondering  

what is a compound word well a compound word  is when two or more sometimes there's three  

or four words in the compound word when  two or more different words are used  

or put together to form a new meaning  okay so it's a new word with a new meaning  

so for let's take a look at some examples for  you so maybe you can recognize these words and  

understand what we're talking about here dinner  table is a very common compound word coffee mug  

wheelbarrow superman and long term so if you  look at these words you can see they're actually  

um all a little bit different so today we're  going to talk about how they're different  

and how to recognize these kinds of words so how  many kinds of compound words are there well there  

are three different kinds okay one we have open  compound words two closed captioning not available  

plus a noun okay so it's an additive and a  noun and these two things together they make  

one new noun so for example the word  living room this is a compound noun  

and in this example the word living actually is  an adjective even though it's it's usually a verb  

here it's being used to modify a noun so it's  an adjective okay but then this these two words  

big cat this is not a compound noun okay hmm but  maybe you're you're thinking why why is it not  

it's an adjective and a noun okay so let's  learn about how to identify a compound noun

and the rule usually is if the adjective and the  noun are commonly used together like living room  

it is usually a compound noun okay so that's why  the word big cat is not a compound noun because  

those words are not commonly used together  now let's talk about closed compound words  

a closed compound word it looks like one word  okay there's no space in the middle of the  

word so these are words like firefighter  notebook superman okay and as you can see  

a closed compound word is usually made up  of two words okay it's it's very rare to see  

a three word closed compound word that that's  that's quite rare all right so usually two  

words and no space in the middle it's closed and  finally let's talk about hyphenated compound words  

okay a hyphen separates the words and maybe  you don't if you don't know what a hyphen  

is okay it's a small line like this in the middle  of the word so here you can see this word here  

long term long term is a compound word but usually  it's it has a hyphen in the middle of it okay  

and here we have a uh a compound word that  uses three words okay up to date okay again  

usually this word has a hyphen  to separate the three words so

hyphen is used if the compound adjective is placed  before the noun okay it's before the noun okay  

like this a long term solution so the compound  word is before the noun use the hyphen okay but  

if you can look at the second sentence  here this compound word long term is now  

after the noun okay and then we don't use a  hyphen so for example this is a good solution  

for the long term no hyphen because it's after  the noun alright everyone that's our video today
