Learn English about Mother's Day - Learn Mother's Day Vocabulary in English

hello everyone i'm teacher Sarah today  we are going to learn english about  

mother's day let's get started today we will talk  about a few different aspects of mother's day so  

we will answer the question what is mother's  day we will learn some mother's day vocabulary  

and we'll talk about some mother's day  traditions so first what is mother's day  

mother's day originated in the u.s  in 1908 so this word right here  

originated means it started there or it is from  there so mother's day started in the u.s in 1908.  

now in 2021 it is celebrated  in more than 40 countries

mother's day is celebrated on the second  

sunday of may every year so this  year it will be may 9th mother's day  

as you can guess by the name is a day to thank  your mother and show her your appreciation  

before we talk about mother's day traditions  let's look at some mother's day vocabulary  

today let's look at the five words gratitude  appreciate cherish generous and tenacious

the first word is gratitude gratitude is a  noun which means the quality of being thankful  

most often we hear it used in the word grateful  which is the adjective form of gratitude  

so instead of saying thank you i might say  i'm grateful for you or i'm grateful to you  

so let's take a look at how we might  use the words gratitude or grateful  

when talking about our mother's or  mother's day i have so much gratitude  

for my mother this means i have so much of  a feeling of being of thankfulness for my  

mother i am grateful to her i have gratitude  for her i am so grateful for her love and care  

notice that when we use the word grateful we often  say i'm grateful for something i'm grateful for  

her love and care i'm grateful for uh  the way that she raised me right so  

here are first words gratitude and grateful  just a different way to express thankfulness

next is the word appreciate appreciate means to  recognize the full worth of something or someone  

or to value or respect something or someone so  today we'll look at appreciate of course in the  

context of a person who do you appreciate  in your life who do you value and respect  

so in the context of mother's day i  might say i appreciate my mother so much  

or i appreciate all that she has given  me our third word today is cherish  

cherish means to protect and care for someone  lovingly and often we use cherish to mean that we  

adore or love something very dearly so of course  this is a word that we might use with our mothers  

so i might say something like i cherish my mother  or i cherish the time that we spend together  

this means i love and adore and really  really hold close to my heart my mother  

and the time that we spend together so cherish  the next two words are adjectives which means we  

might use them to describe someone the first word  is generous this is an adjective which means you  

are very giving it means you might give something  more of something than is necessary or expected  

so this could be you give a lot of your time you  give a lot of your love or you even give a lot  

of material things generous means very giving  so on mother's day i might say something like  

i am grateful that my mother is so generous or she  is generous with her love and time this means she  

gives a lot of her love and a lot of her time  the last word we'll look at today is tenacious  

tenacious is a wonderful adjective that means  to have persistent determination this means to  

work hard and never give up or stop trying many  parents out there are very tenacious when it comes  

to raising their children and trying to make sure  that they have a good life and become good people  

so on mother's day i might say something like  even when life was difficult her mother was always  

tenacious she never gave up this means that uh she  never stopped trying and she always worked hard  

let's review our words for today so the  first three words gratitude appreciate and  

cherish are all words we might use to  show our thankfulness and how much we care  

you might tell your mother that you are  grateful for her that you appreciate what  

she has done for you and that you cherish your  relationship with her if you're explaining to  

her why you love her so much you might say it's  because she is so generous and tenacious these  

are all great words to use and great things  to express to your mother on mother's day

finally let's look at mother's day traditions so  what do people normally do for their mothers on  

mother's day well a very common tradition  is to bring our mother breakfast in bed  

so often perhaps uh the husband or the  children or whoever is celebrating will make  

breakfast and bring it on a tray to their mother  who usually on mother's day she gets to sleep in  

and rest and be taken care of a little  bit more than usual so breakfast in bed  

very common next is cooking a nice meal so  maybe you don't do breakfast maybe you cook a  

nice dinner or you might even take your mother  out for lunch or dinner at a nice restaurant

and finally of course gifts are a part of mother's  day some really common gifts are a greeting card  

so we talked about greeting cards in our  valentine's day video a greeting card is  

just a card where you has a nice picture on the  front and you write a message inside and you  

might use those vocabulary words in a greeting  card like grateful and appreciate and generous

a bouquet of flowers is also a common gift  

a bouquet is many flowers together so for  example 12 roses would be a bouquet of roses  

so flowers are a very common mother's day gift  jewelry like necklaces bracelets or earrings

another common gift would be something handmade  this is especially common for younger children who  

maybe they don't have money so they  make something sweet for their mother  

and of course a personal gift so if there's  something that an item that you know your  

mother really likes or has been wanting you  might get that thing for her on mother's day
