Oral Reading Fluency 27: "What Matters at the Moment" - Build Vocabulary and Fluency!

Hi everyone. It's Jennifer from English with Jennifer. Do you want to practice

reading aloud with me? This lesson is designed to practice a short text four

times. Here's what I recommend. After going through the lesson, record yourself

reading the text. Then practice each day using my model as a guide. On Day 7,

record yourself again. Listen for improvement. The goal isn't to read as

fast as possible. The goal is to read smoothly, clearly, and with expression.

Read with confidence.

It's no secret that I like to stay positive. It's in my nature to worry,

though, so I have to coach myself to remain calm and focus on all positive

things. I'm also a bit of a dreamer, so although I like to be hopeful, I have to

tell myself to be realistic. This reading is about staying positive in this moment.

Before we read, let's go over some vocabulary. "The here and now"

refers to the present. It's a conversational expression. The phrasal

verb "look ahead" means to think about the future. When you think ahead, you might

also set some expectations and make a plan. Speaking of the future, if something

is likely, then it's probably going to happen. It's very possible. Something can

be likely to happen, very likely, more likely, less likely, highly likely. Someone

can be likely to do something or likely to be something. You may already know the

word "habit." If you have a good or bad habit, you do something automatically. You

can also do something out of habit. Same thing. You do something naturally because

you've done it a thousand times before.

Let me explain one more word: trap. This can be a noun or a verb. If something

traps you, then you can't move from that place, so a trap can be physical, or it

can be a situation. You can be in a trap. You can fall into a trap. Finally, let's

review some common word endings, some suffixes. You know the verb "continue."

Right? Can you form a noun for me? Use the suffix -ation. How do we say that?

Continuation, the act of continuing something. Now, form an adjective. Use the

suffix -al. What do you get? Continual. Something that happens again and again.

Something that continues. Now, how do you make that an adverb?

What suffix do we add? -ly. Continually. Happening or doing something again and

again. You'll hear one word from this word family in the reading.

This first time, just listen and read along. Focus on understanding the text.

Now, listen and repeat after me. Follow my rhythm and intonation.

Now, let's read together slowly. We're not going to rush, but we'll read smoothly. We

need to link our words to have connected speech.

Okay. It's time to read faster. We'll read together at a natural pace.
