Look Out, Bring In, Open Up ✨ Most Common Phrasal Verbs in English (46-48)

tell me all your secret wishes, but at least  answer this. Which of these photos most closely  

matches your dream home? A house that looks out  on a beautiful mountain lake. A house that sits  

on the beach and looks out on the ocean. An  apartment that looks out on a big city like  

New York. Feel free to tell me your answer in  the comments. Now, if you had such a house,  

would you bring in a designer to decorate it?  My dream home is somewhere surrounded by nature,  

and I wouldn't mind if it looked out on a lake, a  pond, or a stream. We're going to focus on three  

common phrasal verbs: look out, bring in, and  open up. Did you understand them when I used them  

just now? Let's go over the meanings together.  "Look out" can be transitive or intransitive,  

meaning it may or may not take an  object. There are a few different  

meanings and combinations. Can you guess from  context? Match the meanings to the sentences.

The balcony looks out on the beach.

Older children often look out  for their younger siblings.

Look out! I just broke a  glass, so don't cut yourself.

Look out for scams. Be careful  with your personal information.

Here are the answers.

"Look out on" helps us explain orientation. What  is the house, office, or window facing? What can  

you see from that place? The house looks out  on the beach. "Look out" by itself is a warning  

to be careful. "Look out for something" is a  warning to avoid something dangerous. However,  

"looking out for someone" is about taking  care of them and making sure they're safe,  

like looking out for your younger  brother or sister. Did you look  

out for your siblings or did someone  look out for you when you were younger?

"Bring in" is transitive and separable. If I  ever get my dream dream home, I might choose  

to bring in a designer. I can bring a designer in  to help me decorate my home. This means I'll hire  

the person. I want the person to be involved  in the process because they have experience  

and expertise. The second meaning of "bring in"  has to do with money. Some of you may know that  

I worked in the cruise line industry for a short  time. Do you know which jobs bring in decent tips?

The weight staff in various  dining rooms earn tips. However,  

the servers work really long hours.  So, "bring in" can mean "earn":  

bring in money, bring in tips, bring in  a good salary, bring in a lot of sales.

If you worked in the cruise line  industry, what would be more important  

to you, bringing in good money or  traveling and getting shore time?

I'm going to share one more meaning of "bring  in" that you won't likely find in a dictionary,  

but you'll hear it in movies, TV shows, and  real life. When someone says, "Bring it in,"  

they're asking everyone to come together. It  could be a coach asking the players to form  

a circle for a talk, or someone could be asking  their friends to come together for a group hug.

"Open up" can be transitive or intransitive. It  may or may not take an object. I said earlier that  

you may not want to open up and tell me all your  secret wishes. I wouldn't ask you to either. The  

first meaning of "open up" is to freely share what  you think and feel with someone. People who don't  

open up may be shy or very private, or they may  not easily trust others with their feelings. In  

another sense, someone can open up a discussion or  a debate. For example, a well-written article can  

open up a debate on crime or the value of higher  education, meaning it starts a larger discussion.  

There are two other meanings that I'll put in  a work context. Can you guess their meanings?

I'd like to advance in my company.  Hopefully, if a management position  

opens up, they'll consider me for the  job. This means if the position...

becomes available.

My friend worked in the  family business for a while,  

but then he decided to open up  his own store. This means...

he started operations.
