100 English Words for Every Day Life | English Vocabulary Masterclass

Welcome to this English vocabulary master class.

Today you are going to learn 100 words  that you can use in your daily speech.

These are words that I use every single  day and that native speakers use every day.

So if you use them, you're going to speak  and communicate fluently and confidently.

Now let's get started.

First, in this master class, you're going to learn  

14 phrases to help you speak like a  leader #1 feel free to ask me anything.

Now notice you're learning a complete phrase.

So pay attention to all the  words, the prepositions,  

the articles, the sentence structure matters.

So notice here we have Feel free plus infinitive.

The infinitive is of course 2 plus the base verb.

Feel free to ask me anything.

This is this is used as a  polite, open-ended invitation.

I'm inviting you to ask me whatever you'd like.

Remember you can change that verb.

I could say.

Feel free to send me the report when it's ready.

This sounds polite and professional.

And remember, it's an open invitation.

You're not required to do this.

It's an option if you say send  me the report when it's done.

This is the imperative and it's  direct and also authoritative.

So to sound polite and professional  and to give you an open invitation,  

I can say feel free to  download the free lesson PDF.

And this is a real example because I  

summarize everything from this  lesson in the free lesson PDF.

Feel free to download it #2 I  look forward to hearing your  

thoughts O your colleague could say to you.

Feel free to send me the report when it's done.

And then when it's done, you can send it  to your colleague and say, here you go.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Notice our sentence structure.

Look forward to plus gerund, your verb in ING.

I look forward to hearing.

Don't make this mistake.

Make sure you have the gerund and this  is a polite way to show your interest.

So in this case, your interest  in hearing the person's thoughts,  

their ideas, is their opinions, their feedback.

You could say I look forward  to meeting our verb and ING.

I look forward to meeting you tomorrow.

Now with the structure, you can also use a noun.

I look forward to our meeting.

That's the noun form.

I look forward to our meeting tomorrow.

If you are put yes, yes, yes, to show your  interest, show your enthusiasm, put yes,  

yes, yes, in the Commons #3 here's my take on it.

One's take on something is  one's opinion on something.

So my take on it is simply my opinion on it.

For example, I just read the  consultants recommendations.

Here's my take on them.

Them because recommendations is plural.

Now when I want to share my opinion, my  take, I can simply use an opinion your word.

I think she raised some valid points.

I can use this as a question.

What's your take on the report on the  recommendations #4 from my perspective?

Now, this is the same as in my opinion.

But notice that preposition difference  from my perspective, in my opinion.

So I see a lot of mistakes  when students try to use this.

If someone asks you your  opinion, what's your take on it?

You can use this to start.

From my perspective, I think the consultant's  recommendations aren't practical.

So here you can add on.

I think an opinion word even though you  use from my perspective, but it's optional.

And after you share your opinion, you can invite  the other person to provide their opinion.

What about you?

What's your perspective #5  can you help me understand?

This is a polite way to ask for  clarification or an explanation.

Your colleague could say, from my perspective,  the consultant recommendations aren't practical.

You could comment on this  and say I see, interesting.

Oh really?

And then you can add on this expression.

Can you help me understand  your perspective, your opinion?

Can you help me understand?

This is a great expression if  you want an explanation without  

sounding very direct or authoritative or angry.

If someone says, I don't think  we can meet the deadline,  

you can say, can you help me understand why?

Number six, I'll get back to  you with that information.

This is a great one because someone might ask you  

a question or to provide information  and you don't have that information.

You don't know the answer.

Instead of saying I don't know, you can say  I'll get back to you with that information.

You can provide a time reference if you'd like.

I'll get back to you by the end of the day.

So you just gave yourself a deadline.

You could say I'll get back to you in  an hour or I'll get back to you ASAP.

What does ASAP mean?

This is a very common acronym.

Put it in the comments ASAP.

What's the acronym?

Put it in the comments #7 Can you fill me in?

This is a great one.

It's a casual way to ask  for an update or a summary.

You could say to your colleague, I  was on another call this morning,  

can you fill me in on the staff meeting?

Notice here when I specify the  something the staff meeting,  

you have to use the additional preposition  on Can you fill me in on the staff meeting?

This is often used by one  person to request another  

person provide information to someone else.

For example, your boss could say to you,  hey Danica, can you fill Raphael in?

And then if you want to specify the  something you need that preposition on,  

on the new filing system #8 which  one would you like me to prioritize?

You can use this to clarify  which task should be done first,  

which one you should prioritize  when there are multiple tasks.

So you can use this with two  tasks or more than two as well.

So if you have multiple tasks, you  can go to your boss and say Sarah  

asks for help on the report and I  have to finish the presentation.

Which one would you like me to prioritize?

So now, instead of feeling overwhelmed, you know  exactly which task to focus on to prioritize.

You can use this even just to get  advice from someone you trust.

I could say to you, from your perspective,  which one should I prioritize?

So you're not my boss, you're not  responsible for assigning me task.

But I trust you to provide  me with valuable feedback.

Which one should I prioritize?

From your perspective #9 I trust  you have everything you need.

The word trust is used a  lot in a business context.

This is used to express overall  confidence in someone and their abilities.

So you might come to me and say,  Jennifer, I feel a little nervous.

This is my first time giving a  presentation and I can let you  

know that I have confidence in you and  your abilities and I can say I trust you,  

or I can add on to this and I can  say I trust you can handle this.

So the statement is you can handle this.

Handle means you have the ability to do it.

You can handle this.

Now if I add I trust it's adding certainty.

I'm certain, I know I trust you can handle this.

Number 10.

What can we learn from this?

Such a powerful question.

You can use this to encourage  reflection and analysis after  

a situation, generally a negative situation.

So if something negative happened,  

I didn't get the promotion, you  can say what can I learn from this?

Or I failed my ions, what can I learn from this?

So instead of being upset, angry, mad,  now you're thinking about solutions,  

you're thinking about what you can do differently.

This is a great expression to use  when you're working with a team.

So again, maybe something bad happened.

We lost the client.

What can we learn from this?

And then you can start brainstorming things you  can do differently so it doesn't happen again.

Now to change the sentence structure, you  could also say, what can this teach us?

So notice you can learn something from  someone or something, a situation,  

but also something the situation can teach  you something #11 I'm happy to address that.

So notice the sentence structure.

We have our verb to be.

I am happy our adjective.

So you need to conjugate the verb to  be and then you have the infinitive.

I'm happy to address that.

And this is used to show a  willingness to do something.

So when your boss asks you to fill Raphael  in, you can say I'm happy to fill Raphael in.

And then remember, if you specify the something,  

you need that extra preposition  on this sales process.

So you're showing your willingness to do this.

This is also a great way to end a  presentation or end communication.

We're happy to answer any questions you have.

So remember that structure to be happy  plus infinitive #12 how can I support you?

This is used to offer support, encouragement,  assistance, but also to ask how that can be done.

Your coworker could be upset and  say I'm so overwhelmed with this  

project so you want to show your support.

You can say how can I support you?

You can add on how can I best support you  as an intensifier and then you can even  

add on your willingness and say I'm  happy to help you in any way I can.

You can use this to offer  assistance to someone as well.

If you know your Co worker is very busy,  

you could say you have a lot on your plate with  this presentation which means you're very busy.

How can I support you #13 I value your input.

This is to acknowledge the importance  of someone's opinion or ideas.

So let's use this right now.

How can I make my lessons better?

How can I make this lesson better?

Or how can I make my lessons overall better?

This is used when you agree  or you want to express your  

support for a suggestion or an idea, for example.

We're on board.

We are the verb to be.

We're on board with that preposition with.

We're on board with the new  strategy for increasing sales.

And don't forget to conjugate that verb to  be with your subject and time reference.

I'm on board next.

Are we on the same page?

This is used to confirm that everyone has the  same understanding, opinion, or viewpoint.

After our discussion, it seems  like we're on the same page.

We all have the same opinion,  understanding or viewpoint and to  

specify what that something is you can say  regarding regarding the project timeline.

This is used to request  someone's opinion or feedback.

You can identify something specific and say what  are your thoughts on the new marketing strategy?

Remember, you can replace the noun, the new  marketing strategy with this if it's obvious.

Next, we need to think outside the box.

Have you heard this one To think outside the box?

This is to encourage creative  thinking, innovative thinking.

If you're trying to solve a difficult problem,  

you might say thinking outside the box  is the only way we'll solve this problem.

You need innovative, creative solutions.

Everybody start thinking outside the box next.

I love this one.

Let's circle back to that later.

When you circle back to something,  

it means you stop discussing it now and  you suggest that you discuss it later.

So you postpone your discussion until later.

You could say we only have 10 minutes  left, so let's circle back to this.

Whatever this is your discussion about the  marketing campaign, thinking outside the box.

Let's postpone it now and discuss it later.

Notice the grammar.

This is in the imperative.

It's often the case because we use  this as an instruction or a suggestion.

Let's circle back to Dina, our next phrase.

We need to prioritize our tasks.

If you prioritize something, it means you  organize it based on importance and urgency.

So the most important or  the most urgent at the top  

of your list of to do's because it's  prioritize, it's the most important.

This is a common situation.

We don't have enough time to complete  everything, so let's prioritize our tasks.

I love this one.

Please keep me in the loop.

Do you know this one?

Native speakers love using it.

This is used to request that information  or updates be shared as they happen.

I could say I'm taking tomorrow off, but  please keep me in the loop on the project.

Notice grammatically this  is the imperative because  

I'm giving you an instruction or a suggestion.

You can add please at the beginning or the  end of the imperative to sound more polite.

Good, keep me in the loop on that.

Next, Have they ironed out the details?

This is used to ask if something  has been resolved or clarified.

For example, we need to iron out  the contract details before the  

meeting and notice that pronunciation in the past.

Simple iron doubt, iron doubt,  iron doubt phrase 10 I'm all ears.

This is used to express your  openness and willingness to listen.

I could say if you have any suggestions for  improving this YouTube channel, I'm all ears.

I'm open and willing to  listen to your suggestions.

And that is 100% true.

So please share your suggestions in the comments.

I'm all ears.

Next, let's take a step back.

This is when you pause to  review a situation or decision.

Our marketing campaign didn't work.

Let's take a step back.

Let's pause what we're doing,  

working on the marketing campaign to review  it to make sure it is the right strategy.

Let's take a step back.

Notice this is also in the imperative  for instructions or suggestions.

This is a great one.

I beg to differ.

I beg to differ.

Use this when you disagree.

Agree with someone's opinion or statement.

Your Co worker could say the  marketing campaign didn't  

work because we didn't think outside the box.

You could say I beg to differ, which  means I don't agree, I beg to differ.

The campaign was great, it  was our execution that failed.

I beg to differ.

Next, I'll cut to the chase.

This is when you say your main point directly,  without small talk, without additional details.

For example, I'll cut to the chase.

You're not getting the promotion.

Notice grammatically, the  expression is in the future.

Simple.

I will cut to the chase.

I'll cut to the chase.

Even though the information  you're delivering is now.

I'll cut to the chase.

You're not getting the promotion.

This is a great one.

Run it by the team first.

This is when you share ideas  for feedback and approval.

I think it's a great idea, but  you should run it by Frank first.

You should share it with Frank  to get his feedback and approval.

And why should you do that?

Because our next phrase, Frank calls the shots.

This is to say that someone is in charge.

They have the authority to make decisions.

You should run your idea by  Frank because he calls the shots.

Notice it's the shots.

It's always plural.

I call the shots.

Our next phrase, the balls in Frank's  court, this is used to say is someone  

elses responsibility to make a  decision, in this case Frank.

Maybe you're talking to your coworkers and  someone asks you should we hire Jennifer  

as our English teacher and you don't want to  make that decision so you can say the balls in  

your court to give responsibility  for that decision to someone else.

Remember to conjugate the verb to be  because it's the ball is the balls.

The ball is in your court,  the balls in your court.

Next, we need to nip this in the bud.

This is an important one  because it's when you stop  

a problem at the early stages before  it becomes permanent or more serious.

Let's say you have a new policy for a dress code,  

but none of the new employees  are following the dress code.

So that's the problem and you want  to stop it in the early stages.

You want to nip it in the bud.

Grammatically, the verb is nip and to  conjugate it, it's nip nipped, nipped.

You need to nip this in the bud.

This is a great one.

It's not my cup of tea.

Do you know this one?

This is used to say that you dislike something.

Public speaking is not my cup of tea,  but it's essential for my career.

And remember, there are two correct contractions.

It isn't.

It's not.

You can use either one.

They hammered out the agreement.

This is used to say that something  is finalized as a question.

Have you hammered out the terms yet?

This is commonly used with  agreements, proposals, and contracts.

Phrase 20.

We're swamped right now.

Doctor Kepner, we're swamped.

This is to say, you're really busy.

We've been swamped since Vanessa quit.

The expression is 2 be swamped.

So your verb is to be, and then  swamped is always in the Ed form.

Next, we'll take that into consideration.

This is to say you'll consider something.

You'll consider someone's feedback,  suggestion, advice, recommendation.

Now, because I'm all ears, you  shared a suggestion with me.

You said, Jennifer, I think you should  upload videos three times per day.

I could say thanks for your suggestion.

Take that into consideration.

Next, we need to think long term.

This is used to emphasize the  

importance of considering future  implications and considerations.

I could say publishing videos three  times per day would help my students,  

but I need to think long term.

Is that sustainable for me?

All become very swamped very quickly.

Nice.

Sorry I'm tied up.

This means you're busy and therefore unavailable.

You could say.

I wish I could help you, but I'm tied up.

I'm already busy with something  else and therefore unavailable.

Now you can specify the something and use the  preposition with I'm tied up with the budget.

Phrase 24, let's put our heads together.

This is used to suggest  the need for collaboration,  

brainstorming, or more than one opinion.

Because the opinion is in your head.

And if you put heads together, then  you have more than one opinion.

If we put our heads together, I  know we can nip this in the bud.

And finally, phrase 25 to  play devil's advocate it.

This is when you consider opposing  viewpoints when making a decision.

I could say I think 3 videos per day is too much  for me to handle, but let's play devil's advocate.

So now I'm going to think  about publishing 3 videos per  

day and think about what that would take, what my  day would be like, just to see if it's possible.

And that will help me make my decision.

You have already learned so many complete phrases.

Let's focus on phrasal verbs because they're so  

important to understanding native  speakers and sounding like one too.

And let's focus on phrasal  verbs with pull, take, and get.

And you'll complete quizzes after each section.

First, let's review the most  common phrasal verbs with pull.

And at the end, you'll complete  a quiz to pull off a task.

When you pull off a task, it means that you  successfully completed a difficult task.

For example, let's say that  your boss asks your team to  

double their sales by the end of the month.

That's a difficult task.

So you might say, I don't  know how we'll pull this off,  

how we'll accomplish complete this difficult task.

I don't know how we'll pull this  off, but let's say you do double  

your sales after you can say, I  can't believe we pulled it off.

I can't believe we did it.

We completed this difficult task.

And often to reassure someone when  they're completing a difficult task,  

you can say, don't worry.

I know you'll pull it off.

You'll pull it off, you'll achieve,  

you'll complete this difficult  task to pull up a document.

This is a must know phrasal verb  because when you pull up a document,  

you make that document visible on your device.

It could be a computer, laptop, phone, tablet,  it doesn't matter, but it has to be a device.

So if you're in a meeting, you might say,  give me a second to pull up that report.

Give me a second to make that  report visible on the screen.

Now you can also use with social situations.

You might be having coffee with a friend  and then you pull up some vacation photos.

You make those photos visible on your  screen and you share them with your friend.

And it's very common to hear  this when you're calling any  

sort of customer support or client support.

Let's say you're making a dentist appointment.

They're going to first say,  can I have your name, please?

And then they'll say, give me a second to pull  up your file because on your file it's all the  

important information, but they need to  make that file visible on their screen.

Pull up.

Now we also use pull up with vehicles.

So if you're driving and you  want to pull up to a store,  

it means you're going to  slowly approach that store.

Now, you may or may not stop.

You may just slowly approach that store, read  their hours of operation, and then keep driving.

Or you may pull up to that store, slowly  approach the store, and stop your car.

Here's an example of me pulling up to my mailbox.

So notice how I slowly approach my mailbox.

I'm seeing if there's any  mail, but notice I don't stop.

I keep going.

Don't confuse this with pull over because  you can also pull your vehicle over.

Now.

When you pull over, it means  you're driving and you bring  

your vehicle to the side of the road and you stop.

So you always stop when you pull over.

So if you're in a taxi or an Uber, you might  say, oh, you can pull over by the greenhouse.

You can take the car to the side of  the road and stop by the greenhouse.

Now we also use this with the police  because if you're driving and you hear  

a siren behind you, well, you have to pull over.

You have to bring your car to the side  of the road and come to a complete stop.

So here you can see me pulling  over next to the mailbox.

I'm coming to a complete stop.

Now, you can also pull in and  out of of a parking spot or a  

garage or some enclosed space for your vehicle.

So when you enter the parking  spot or garage, you're pulling in,  

I'm pulling into my garage and  when you exit, you're pulling out,  

you're pulling out of the parking  spot or pulling out of the garage.

So you might say make sure you look both ways  before you pull out or this is a tight space.

Make sure you pull in slowly or carefully.

So here you can see I'm pulling into my driveway,  

which is a confined space, and now you  can see I'm pulling out of my driveway.

We also use pull in and out for a chair.

So when you bring the chair closer to  the table, you're pulling the chair in.

When you bring your chair farther away from  the table, you're pulling your chair out.

So if you're in a busy restaurant  and you're trying to pass by someone,  

you might say, oh, excuse me, can you  pull in your chair so I can pass by?

Can you bring your chair closer to the table  so there's more room for me to pass by?

Or if you're too close to the table,  then you need to pull your chair out.

And traditionally men will pull out  the chair for a woman to have a seat.

Maybe that's a little old fashioned these days.

Now you can also pull out of an event,  

and that means you withdraw from that  event so you no longer participate.

And that event can be a race, a  competition, or even an election.

So let's say there's a competition  for a position at your company,  

and there are five people  competing for this one position.

Now maybe Sarah decides to pull out.

She pulls out of the competition, which means  she's no longer trying to get that position.

She withdraws from the competition.

Or maybe you're competing in a marathon,  

but you hurt your leg the week before,  so you have to pull out of the race.

You can also pull something apart,  which means something is a hole,  

and then you separate it into individual  pieces, which is to pull apart.

So something simple like an orange or a grapefruit  that has individual pieces, you can pull it apart.

You can also pull apart electronics  

or more complicated things as  well to pull oneself together.

This is a great one.

This means to regain your  composure after you're upset,  

worried, anxious, or in a extreme emotional state.

And to regain your composure  just simply means to calm down.

So if you're really agitated, maybe you got pulled  over by the police and your heart is beating so  

fast and you're really anxious, your friend in the  passenger seat might say pull yourself together,  

pull yourself together, which is another  way to say calm down, regain your composure.

So go from really anxious  to pull yourself together.

To pull through means to survive or to  successfully recover from an illness.

So we use this in a health context.

So let's say that Greg had a major heart  attack, but thankfully he pulled through.

He survived that major heart attack.

Now let's say Greg has that major heart  attack and then he's in the hospital.

You talk to the doctor and the first thing you're  going to say is, is Greg going to pull through?

Is he going to pull through?

Is he going to survive?

Is he going to recover?

The doctor might say, I think he'll pull through,  

or maybe it's too soon to  tell if he'll pull through.

And finally to pull together.

This is when you work together as a team.

So remember, that team had to double  their sales by the end of the month.

Well, they pulled together to pull it  off to complete that difficult challenge.

And after the boss might say, I'm really  impressed by how your team pulled together.

It's amazing that everyone  pulled together to pull it off.

Now you know the most common  phrasal verbs with pull.

And now let's move on and talk about  phrasal verbs with take to take off.

This is used when a flight leaves the ground.

For example, tomorrow my  flight takes off at 7:00 AM.

Or what time did your flight take off?

So this is another way of simply  saying what time did your flight leave?

Now, we also use this phrasal verb to  talk about a person leaving a location.

So you might be at a party and it's getting late.

You have an early meeting and  you say thanks for the party.

I'm going to take off, I'm going to leave.

Or someone might ask you, what  time did you take off last night?

What time did you leave?

Now, take off is also used to  remove an item of clothing.

So at night, before you get into your  pajamas, you take off your clothes.

Right before you get into the  shower, you take off your clothes.

I can also take off my  makeup, which means to remove.

Or if it's really hot in the room, you might say,  

oh, it's so hot in here, I  need to take off my sweater.

Or when you come into the house and it's cold out,  you take off your jacket, you take off your shoes,  

you take off your hat, you take off  your gloves, take off your sunglasses.

So you can take off an item of clothing,  

but you can also take off off accessories  like rings, makeup, glasses as well.

Takeoff can also mean to become successful.

For example, after I improved my English  speaking skills, my career really took off.

My career became successful.

My career took off.

Or I could say overnight my YouTube channel  took off, my YouTube channel became successful.

So many different phrasal verbs would  take off, but they're all commonly used.

So make sure you learn all these  individual meanings to take after someone.

When you take after someone, you resemble  them in either personality or appearance.

And this is most commonly  used with family members.

For example, it's very common for a son to take  take after his dad, which means he looks like him.

They look very similar.

But you might also say Julie is so funny.

She really takes after Uncle Frank.

So maybe Uncle Frank is really funny.

He's always telling these hilarious jokes.

And then Julie, it is also really funny.

She takes after Uncle Frank.

So you can use this with personality  or appearance to take apart.

When you take something apart, you disassemble it.

So it goes from being whole one complete item and  then you disassemble it into individual parts.

So if your car isn't working, you might take apart  

the motor or take apart the engine to  try to figure out what the problem is.

You might also take apart a desk or  take apart a bed when you're getting  

rid of it when you're removing it from  your home because it's easier to move  

when it's in individual parts rather  than one big structure to take back.

When you take something back, it means that you  return a purchased item to the store for a refund.

So let's say you bought a  pair of shoes at the store.

You come home and you realize they don't fit  very well or you just don't really like them.

Well, you can take them back.

So you go to the store, you return the  shoes, and you get your money back.

Now we only use this when you  physically go to the store.

So with online purchases, we actually  don't use the phrasal verb take back.

So if you order something from Amazon and  you don't like it and you want a refund,  

we simply say I returned the shoes  I bought from Amazon or I sent back.

I sent back the shoes.

So just keep that in mind.

We only use take back when you  physically go to the store.

You can also take someone back, which means  you reunite a previous romantic relationship.

So let's say that Rob and Julie were a  couple last year, but then they broke up.

They ended their relationship.

But then Rob, he begs Julie, please take me back,

But Julie's friend might say, don't take Rob back.

Why would you take Rob back?

You shouldn't take Rob back to take on.

When you take on a project or a task, it simply  means that you accept that project or task.

For example, your boss might ask the team who  has time to take this on, who has time to take  

on this new project or this new client, and you  might say I can take it on, I can take it on.

So you accept that responsibility for that job.

You can also take over a  responsibility, a project,  

a task, which means that you assume  responsibility from another person.

So let's say Julie look on the project.

But then Julie decided to go on a three-week  vacation so your boss might ask you to take over.

So the responsibility goes from Julie to you.

Hey Maria, can you take over this  project while Julie's on vacation?

Or it can be, can you just take over this project?

So it can be permanent, it becomes your  project permanently, or it can just be  

a temporary situation while someone is  sick or on vacation to take someone out.

When you take someone out, it means you  invite them for an activity such as having  

a meal together or going to the movies  together, but you pay for that activity.

For example, let's say it's your birthday.

Well, your husband, your best friend,  your mother, your sister might take  

you out for dinner, which means they invite  you for dinner and they also pay for dinner.

That's the important part.

Or they might take you out for a  nice night at the movies and you  

go to the movies together or  maybe to the amusement park.

So you can do other activities.

But it's mainly used with meals.

So maybe your friend says,  why would you take Rob back?

Why would you take Rob back?

He didn't even take you out for your birthday.

Oh, he didn't invite you out for  dinner and then pay for that meal.

You can take up a new hobby or activity, which  means you start that new hobby or activity.

So you could tell your friends  I decided to take up karate,  

which means you decided to start karate  lessons as a new hobby or activity.

Or your friend might say, I  didn't know you took up dancing.

I didn't know you started  dancing as a hobby or activity.

So now you know the most common  phrasal verbs would take.

When you get along with someone, it means you  have a good relationship with that person.

I really get along with my boss, but  we commonly use this in the negative.

I don't get along with my boss.

So you can use it in both  the positive or the negative.

So which describes you?

I get along with my boss.

I don't get along with my boss to get away.

This means to escape.

So you can use this in two contexts.

The criminal got away, so that means he escaped.

The robber got away.

He stole my car and he got away.

He escaped.

But we also use this more in the sense  of to escape from your daily life,  

the difficulties of your daily life.

Oh, I really need to get away work has been  so busy, I don't get along with my boss.

I need to get away.

Another common phrasal verb with getaway is to  

get away with something and  that something is negative.

For example, she got away with the crime.

This means she wasn't punished for the crime.

So she did something wrong,  but she got away with it.

She got away with stealing the car.

Notice that verb ING with stealing  the car to get off lately?

This is when you are punished for something, but  you're punished less severely than you anticipate.

So maybe you forgot to submit a report  at work, but you got off lightly.

Your boss didn't fire you, but they  did remove you from the account.

So you were punished, but you were  punished less severely than you expected.

We also use this more in a criminal context.

She stole the car, but she got off  lightly, so maybe she didn't go to prison.

She only had to do community service to get back.

This is used to say that you return  to your original starting point.

So let's say you're at home, but then you go  to the store and then you return back home.

So now you can say I got back at 7:00.

What time did you get back?

Now you can specify the place.

What time did you get back home?

Back to the office?

Oh, I got back around seven.

We commonly use this with your vacations.

What time did you get back  from your trip to Italy?

Oh, I got back on Tuesday.

You returned home from Italy.

There is also the phrasal  verb to get back to someone.

You might say, oh, I really  need to get back to John.

When you get back to someone, it  means you respond to that person.

So if I say I need to get back to John, it means  that John contacted me but I have not replied.

So maybe he asked me a question and  I have not answered his question.

I need to get back to John or you.

John might say, when are  you going to get back to me?

When are you going to respond to my question?

When you get back into something,  

it means you continue doing something  that you stopped for a period of time.

So let's say you decided to learn  how to play guitar or piano,  

and you play guitar every week  for months and months and months.

And then you stop playing guitar.

You get very busy at work, but  then work is no longer busy.

So you say, oh, I need to get back into guitar.

I need to get back into my guitar lessons.

So maybe you could use this  with your language lessons.

I need to get back into my English language class.

Now let's continue on with our next get  phrasal verb to get back at someone.

This is used for revenge.

So if you didn't get back to John, which  means you didn't reply to John and you  

didn't answer his question, maybe  John will try to get back at you.

He'll try to get revenge on on you.

So maybe he'll tell everyone  that you're not very helpful  

and that's how he gets back at you  to get behind someone or something.

This is when you support someone or something.

So let's say your company has a new policy  on their dress code and you like the policy.

You can say I can really get behind that policy.

You support that policy to get by.

This is when you have just  enough resources to survive.

We most commonly use this  with financial resources.

So you might say with  inflation, I can barely get by.

So it means you can pay your bills,  pay your mortgage, buy groceries,  

but just enough at the end of the month  you have one or $2.00 left in your account.

I'm getting by to get into trouble.

I'm sure you do this all the time.

When you get into trouble, it just means  you enter that situation where you're  

doing something you're not supposed  to be doing, which is the trouble.

So kids get into trouble all the time.

That's why you don't leave your kids at  home without an adult to supervise them,  

because they're going to get into trouble.

They're going to write on all the walls with  crayon or eat all the cookies in the fridge.

They're going to get into trouble to get on.

This is when you board, which  means to enter certain vessels,  

certain methods of transportation.

So you can get on a plane,  a train, a boat or a bus.

I got on the plane.

You entered the plane, you boarded  The plane to get on is also used as  

an expression to say that someone  is old or has become very old.

So you might say my grandma is getting on,  which means my grandma is now quite old.

She's become very old.

My grandma's getting on, so she has  difficulty getting on a plane now.

What's the opposite of on?

I'm on the plane, I got on the plane,  so now I need to get off the plane.

And remember, you only get off certain methods of  transportation, planes, trains, boats and buses.

This is my stop.

I need to get off the bus, get off the  train for vehicles, cars, vans or trucks.

You get in and get out of I got  in my car, I got out of my car.

So don't confuse those two.

We also use get in when you enter a room in a  building or enter a house Oregon a location.

So this is very common at work.

A coworker could ask you,  oh, what time did you get in?

They mean what time did you enter the office.

So you can also use it to mean what  time did you start your work day?

Because when you enter the office  building, technically you've started work.

So what time did you get in is another way  of saying what time did you start work.

Now in this case, although  the opposite of in is out,  

we have an expression to get off,  which means to end work for the day.

So someone could ask you, oh,  what time do you get off today?

What time do you usually get off?

What time are you getting off tomorrow?

This means what time do you finish work?

Do you end work just for the day?

To get out is also used as  an expression of disbelief.

So let's say your friend  tells you I won the lottery.

Get out.

Get out, get out of here.

Get out of town.

So you can add get out of here, or less  commonly, but still common, get out of town.

It's just to show that I can't believe it.

What?

Get out, get out.

So if your friend says something  very shocking or surprising,  

I'm moving to Antarctica,  get out, get out of town.

Why?

Why are you doing that?

When you get out of something  or get out of doing something,  

it means you avoid doing something unpleasant.

So I could say I need to get out of cleaning the  

garage because that's unpleasant and  I don't want to do it to get together.

This is when people organize socially.

They join each other socially.

So I might ask, what time are  we getting together tonight?

So what time are we going to meet each  other, join each other and have dinner,  

have a cup of coffee, go for  a walk, do something social.

Now, if you specify the noun  you need with what time are  

you getting together with your friends tonight?

You probably know this one to get up.

What time do you get up?

This is when you leave your bed in the  morning first thing in the morning.

So what time do you wake up?

This is when you open your eyes, but then  get up is when you actually leave your bed.

So I wake up at 6:00 AM, but  I don't get up until 6:30.

How about this one?

Get up to What did you get up to last night?

This is a common way of simply  asking what someone did.

Oh, what did did you get up to last night?

Oh, not much, I watched a movie.

We also used this one though to imply  that someone is doing something wrong.

My kids are always getting up to no good.

This is the same thing as getting into  trouble, but in a general context.

Oh what did you get up to last night?

It's what did you do last night?

To get across this is to  communicate your idea successfully.

So as a non-native speaker, you might say  I have a hard time getting my ideas across.

I have a hard time communicating successfully.

And if you have a hard time  getting your ideas across,  

someone might ask you what are you getting at?

What are you getting at?

This is another way of saying,  what are you trying to communicate?

What do you mean?

So if you're trying to explain something  but the other person doesn't understand,  

they can say what are you getting at?

Now to get at can also mean to successfully reach  something or find something or obtain something.

So let's say I have a shelf and I  have a hat on a very high shelf.

I might say I can't get at my hat.

I can't reach my hat to get rid of.

This is when you throw away so permanently remove.

Unwanted items.

So remember I said I wanted to get  out of cleaning my garage because  

there's so many things I need to get rid of.

There's so many unwanted things in my  garage that I want to permanently remove.

So maybe once a year you can go through  your entire house and get rid of things,  

get rid of unwanted things.

To get wound up about something is when  you get really angry about something.

So let's say your father doesn't  like politics in general.

So every time he sees something  in the news about politicians,  

he gets wound up, he gets really angry.

But you might say to your dad, get over it.

Get over it.

To get over something is when  you tell someone they shouldn't  

have strong feelings towards something else.

And those strong feelings are  usually negative feelings.

So if your dad gets really wound  up about politics, you can say,  

oh, just get over it, it's not a big deal.

You can, of course, get over someone.

Do you know this one?

When you get over someone, it means you no  longer have romantic feelings for that person.

So after my divorce, it took me  years to get over my husband.

It took me years to stop having  romantic feelings towards my husband.

Now someone could say get over it.

Stop being upset about the situation  that you're no longer with your husband,  

but that might be a little insensitive.

You can also get over an illness, which  means you recover from an illness.

It took me weeks to get over my cold.

It took me weeks to recover  from my cold to get around.

This is how you travel within  an area, so if you're a tourist,  

you might Google what's the best  way to get around New York City.

And of course, it's not by car.

You don't want to get around by car  because the traffic is terrible.

So walking is the best way to get around,  

or taking the subway is the best  way to get around New York City.

When you get around to something or to  doing something, it means you finally  

do something after not  doing it for a long of time.

So let's say I was trying to get out of cleaning  

the garage because I didn't really want  to get rid of all that unwanted stuff.

But I finally got around to cleaning the garage.

So I finally cleaned the garage.

After a long time of not cleaning the  garage to get it together is when you  

take control of your life or your emotions.

So let's say your friend is really upset  because she broke up with her husband and  

she has not gotten over him and you want  to tell your friend to just get over it  

but instead you tell your friend  get it together, get it together.

You need to take control of your emotions because  

your friend is crying all the  time or she's really upset.

She's really Moody, angry, not pleasant to be  around, and you tell your front you need to  

get it together, which is a little bit of  tough love, but sometimes it's necessary.

There are many phrasal verbs with get  through that have different meanings.

When you get through something, it means you  endure or deal with a difficult situation.

It was really difficult for me to get  through my father's death, so my father died.

Obviously that's a difficult situation.

Hopefully you don't say get over it  because that would be very insensitive,  

but I had a hard time getting  through my father's death.

So you can use this in a personal situation.

You can use it in a work situation as well.

I don't get along with my boss, so I have  a hard time getting through our meetings.

I have a hard time dealing with our meetings  because I don't get along with my boss.

When you get through something, it  can also mean that you successfully  

finish something that was very  difficult or time consuming.

I finally got through the report.

So you finished it, but it  took you a really long time.

It was difficult.

When you get through to someone, it  means that you successfully contact  

them after numerous attempts  of trying to contact them.

So let's say I needed to get back to John.

I needed to respond to John.

But every time I called John, I got his voicemail.

I could say I'm having a hard  time getting through to John.

So I can't get back to John  because I can't get through to him.

But we also use to get through  to someone when you're able to  

communicate something to someone in  a way that they, they understand it.

So I told my friend that she shouldn't quit her  

job and I explained all the reasons  why and I finally got through to her.

So I finally made her understand  why she shouldn't quit her job.

Your head is probably spinning right now  with all of these phrasal verbs with get,  

but all you need is some practice,  practice, practice and repetition.
