Why You Understand English but CAN'T Speak Fluently. 3 Problems You Need to Solve!

You understand English speaking, but it's  hard to speak. I had the same problem.  

There are 3 reasons why you can't speak English. Reason 1. You don't immerse yourself in English 

Reason 2. You're a diffident person Reason 3. You consume more than you produce 

Now let's talk about how to fix all these  problems. If you don’t know me, I’m Kate,  

a non-native English teacher. My goal  is to help you learn English fast and  

easily. In this video I will share with you  my learning experience. Now let’s get started. 

Reason 1. You don’t immerse yourself. First  of all, let's talk about what immersion is.  

To immerse yourself in an English  speaking environment means not only  

living in an English speaking country  or studying at Stanford University. 

If you can't afford that kind of things, I  mean you have no financial opportunity to  

go to Great Britain or the United States, you  can make simple steps to immerse yourself even  

if you're learning English at home. You should  start with creating a daily routine for yourself.  

Decide for yourself when how and how much you  should be learning. Think about the amount of  

free time you have and make a commitment to  yourself to sit down and study every day,  

consistently. After a month of consistent work  you will see results. Just make it a habit. 

If you really want to learn English you should  make it a part of your life. To immerse yourself  

in English language you need to listen a lot. Listen to audiobooks and podcasts in English.  

Watch English channels on YouTube, Netflix,  BBC and others. YouTube is one of my favorite  

platforms. I think it's the best way to learn  English and immerse yourself in an English  

speaking environment. And it's absolutely free.  You can find there anything you want for learning,  

any topic that is interesting for you. And if you  watch, let's say 5 videos a day, I promise that  

your English will improve in some period of time. I often hear some teachers say: stop watching  

YouTube, just go and learn English from  a textbook or join a speaking club,  

take actions instead of just watching. I see  their point, but... It's essential to listen and  

watch YouTube when you're learning because  you listen and you develop your listening  

skills. It's all about immersing yourself. So let's review the points once again 

1) watching English videos (Netflix, BBC, YouTube) 2) listening a lot (audiobooks and podcasts) 

3) daily routine for learning 4) consistent practice 

Reason 2. You're a diffident person Diffidence is a kind of shyness,  

a self-doubt. In other words a diffident person is  a person who doesn't believe in their abilities.  

I was facing this problem when I was in high  school. Diffidence is lacking of self-confidence. 

When you speak you need to feel comfortable and  relaxed, but the only way to feel comfortable when  

speaking is to speak more. The more you speak, the  more comfortable you feel. There is no other way  

to stop feeling nervous about your speaking. How can you find out if you’re a diffident  

person? It's hard to talk to  people in your native language.  

You avoid social interactions. You prefer to keep  silent instead of speaking. I know it's hard to  

believe guys but it's all about me. I was afraid  of speaking to people, I was feeling nervous  

and I was tensed all the time while speaking. If you have the same problem, I want you to  

know that you can go from a nervous speaker  to a confident speaker. You can do it. All  

you need to do is chill and relax. First of  all, you need to chill and relax. Then you  

need to develop your communication skills,  so that you can talk to anyone, anywhere,  

not only in English but in your native language  as well. There is a good book how to improve your  

communication skills. We Need to Talk: How  to Have Conversations That Matter By Celeste  

Headlee. I highly recommend reading this book. Make sure you can talk with no fear, with no  

hesitation, talk confidently. I have a few videos  about confidence; I’ll leave all the links here. 

Now let’s move on to the reason 3. Reason 3. You consume more than you produce 

We have four basic language skills -  listening, reading, writing and speaking.  

Listening and reading are passive skills. You  consume information, so this is consuming.  

Writing and speaking are your active skills.  You produce information, so this is producing. 

I was talking about immersion in the first part  of the video. So consuming is fine! I think,  

the more you watch and listen in English, the  better you understand English, you get used  

to different phrases, you see how the language  works. But. Your passive learning should be in  

balance with your active learning. So, we say that writing and  

speaking are your active skills. So, start with writing a journal  

in English. This is an amazing way to improve  your Speaking skills, because when you write,  

you think, how to construct a sentence, how's  better say the phrase and you train your brain.  

You should put your thoughts on paper. Writing  is the same thing as speaking but it's on paper. 

Then, you should work on your speaking. You need  to have a speaking partner. One of the best ways  

to find a conversation partner is to join an  English speaking community. There are so many  

of them on WhatsApp, Telegram or Discord. You can  talk through voice messages; it's very convenient  

and very helpful for your Speaking skills. You guys often ask me if I teach one-to-one  

or if I have an English course available. To  be honest with you, I don't hold any classes  

at the moment and I don't sell any courses.  Another important thing is that I’m studying  

now so I don’t have much free time to hold  classes and make as much content as I want  

to. But the good news is that I'm working on  my English project now. When it's available,  

I will let you know. I will announce it. And  all that I can give you now is my free videos. 

Now let’s get back to the point. Please don’t  forget that watching English stuff is good,  

but the number one rule is when you have learned  something new, you need to practice this right  

away. New words, new phrases, everything.  And if your partner is a non-native speaker,  

you can explain new vocabulary to him and  it would be helpful for you and your friend. 

Practicing with a native speaker is the best way  to improve your speaking skills. If you can afford  

classes with a native English teacher, that’s  amazing. But! Non-native English teachers are  

also very good, because they understand the  language learning process from the inside,  

and their classes are not expensive. First of  all, non-natives understand what it’s like to  

learn English, because they have already  done it themselves! So it’s up to you!  

I learned English online with a native  English teacher, and I also practiced  

with many non-native teachers. I think  both kinds of lessons were effective.
