English Addict (Quick Fix 3) Tues 5th October 2021- Live Chat from England with Mr Duncan

For all those wondering yes my cake  

was lovely i had it yesterday afternoon  with a cup of tea and it was delicious

and then i had to go for a walk down the road to  to lose all of those calories that i just consumed  

here we are again yes it's a very windy one the  wind is blowing it's very blustery out there  

the birds are all staying in the trees hidden  away it's too windy for the birds you know that  

the the weather is bad when the birds won't even  come out here we go again yes it's english addict  

extra oh we have a quick fix of english  coming to you live from the birthplace of  

the english language which just happens  to be oh my goodness i can't believe it

it's england

a lot of people ask they do

they ask me where do you come from mr duncan where  is your live stream broadcasting from well it's  

coming live right now from england the birthplace  of the english language nearly a thousand years  

ago happy birthday almost to the english language  here we go then yes we are back hi everybody this  

is mr duncan in england how are you today are  you okay i hope so are you happy i hope you are  

feeling super duper happy today because we are  back together again yes it is english addict  

live and this is your extra fix for today  your quick fix so i'm not here for two hours  

this is one of my shorter live streams much  shorter than usual so around about half an hour  

40 minutes is the length of my special live  streams which are taking place during this  

month i talk about the english language you might  say that i am an english addict because i love  

english very much you might also notice today  there is a little anagram can you see my anagram  

i might do this every day i might put a little  anagram on my microphone from monday to friday  

when i'm doing my live streams so there is  today's anagram i think it's an easy one but

we are here of course to do that to chat as live  as live can be so that's the introduction's over

from monday to friday so every week during  october and every day during the week i am

it's very windy outside you might notice behind  me the the trees are blowing all over the place  

and the birds are nowhere to be seen they are  hiding away if you look in the back garden at the  

moment we've had a casualty we've had a casualty  of the strong weather the strong winds look  

can you see mr heron has fallen over he's  blown over so that is how strong the wind is  

even mr heron poor mr heron even he has blown over  in the wind you might be able to see some sheep in  

the background behind the tree you might be able  to see there are some sheep in the field at the  

back and there was mr steve as well did you see  that that was mr steve i just saw steve did anyone  

else see mr steve i thought i just saw mr steve's  head maybe he is going for a little walk because  

he's just come back he's just returned from his  busy conference we might actually see him going by  

i wonder if we wait patiently we  might actually see mr steve walking by  

i think he's going out to get some fresh air  because he was very busy yesterday in birmingham  

on conference with his company come on mr  steve where are you we're waiting for you

i have a feeling he's not coming oh come on  steve well wait oh there he is hello mr steve  

we can see you mr steve is going for a walk up the  hill and what he doesn't realize is we can see him  

hello mr steve where are you going so i was all  alone last night because mr steve had to stay away  

in birmingham so so unfortunately steve was away  last night and i felt very lonely it is strange  

when you are you are used to having someone nearby  and then suddenly they vanish it really it really  

feels very odd and very strange when when someone  you are used to having around suddenly vanishes  

and disappears but he's just returned and he  said to me mr duncan i am going out for a walk  

i'm going to get some fresh air so now you  can see him walking up the hill there he goes

he's wearing his shorts as well i  wonder if he'll turn around and wave  

maybe not so there's steve and this is me yes i'm  sorry you have to have me as well unfortunately  

today we're talking about one of two things i i  won't have lots and lots of subjects but of course  

you are welcome to introduce something to the live  chat if you feel like it if you want to you are  

more than welcome to do so today we are talking  about annoying habits when people are talking  

especially young people this is  something that many of us of our age  

complain about we always say children today young  people today they don't use the english language  

as well as we did when we were young and  it might be true it might actually be true  

that quite a lot of young people nowadays do not  speak the english language as well as they used to  

there are some annoying habits that  have kind of come into the the usage  

of english especially when speaking but i have a  feeling it might also have something to do with  

modern technology because young people now they  communicate in more than one way they don't just  

speak but they also type on their mobile devices  like like this one for instance so quite often

young people will be typing texting and quite  often because they have very busy lives very busy  

social lives quite often they will be in a hurry  so they often type their messages very quickly  

which means they often abbreviate what they  want to say so i think that that type of speech  

certainly when you are writing has become part  of actual speaking when you are communicating  

with other people vocally or verbally so i think  maybe there is a connection between those things  

young people using the internet using mobile  phones and social media and also the way they  

speak when they are actually communicating  directly with someone so i think yes maybe  

there is a connection somewhere along the way but  we will be looking at some of the annoying habits  

that people have some of the annoying habits i  wonder who was first today well guess what we  

will be taking a look at that in a few moments  because today it is the second day of the week

we have made it all the way to tuesday

that's enough we can't have too much  excitement but i haven't done my fancy

yesterday afternoon after finishing my live stream  yesterday i sat down and i had the most delicious  

cup of tea and also my lovely battenberg  cake it was very nice and for those who are  

interested in making their own cake similar  to the one that i showed yesterday i'm sure  

somewhere on the internet you can find it and of  course there is a great way of finding anything  

that you want to know on the  internet you can google google

am i the only person who still feels ridiculous  

when i say google it sounds like i'm  talking like a baby cuckoo shall i google

how is your facebook today talking of technology  how is your facebook is it working okay  

did you have any problems yesterday with facebook  apparently it went down there was an outage  

i love that word by the way an outage  

i always think outage sounds like a  positive word we are having an outage

let's all have an outage but it isn't it  is not a positive word it's a negative one  

it normally means something has  stopped working normally something  

that uses technology or maybe electricity  something that provides a constant service  

and then suddenly is interrupted we describe  that as an outage so yesterday there was an  

outage on the internet the world wide web  which is where i'm standing at the moment  

it's a bit crowded to be honest it's not  just me here there are millions of people

that's probably why it's so hot where i'm standing  at the moment hello christina hello richard hello  

also to claudia hello claudia i will be  going to the dentist on friday by the way  

because of course claudia is a dentist i will be  visiting the dentist i'm not looking forward to it  

because i haven't been for a long time i had  a check-up last week and on friday i'm going  

to have some treatment the hygienist who of  course is in charge of cleaning your teeth  

and making sure they're all bright and shiny  we'll be looking at my teeth and i have a feeling  

she might have a lot of work to do because i  haven't been to the dentist for a long time

but of course i have a good reason because they  were closed they weren't open i couldn't go to  

the dentist so i i do imagine at the moment i can  imagine that there must be lots of people around  

who have bad teeth maybe their teeth are starting  to go brown or maybe they are starting to decay  

in their mouth or maybe they are starting to fall  

out sometimes when i'm brushing my teeth i  notice that there is a little bit of blood  

which is not good apparently if you if your gums  bleed when you clean your teeth it's not good  

it's not much blood it's only a little  bit so i have plenty left inside my tubes

whatsapp and instagram were down yesterday  they were they both had outages so there was  

also instagram whatsapp and facebook as well  what i found interesting about yesterday's event  

is that in the news they were talking about  facebook as well because there is one lady  

who has come forward and she has revealed lots  of the secrets of the algorithms that facebook  

and of course youtube also uses very similar  systems as well to control the way things are seen  

and also the way things are not seen on the  internet so i thought it was very interesting  

yesterday the same day that facebook had lots of  technical problems a young lady came forward as  

something we call a whistle-blower i love that  phrase whistle-blower if we describe a person  

as a whistle-blower what we are actually  saying is a person who reveals secrets  

they come forward and they reveal secrets  or they talk about what is happening  

in secret maybe concerning a person or  an organization they are described as a

whistle-blower they blow the whistle it means  you are alerting other people to something that  

is going on and i suppose over the years there  have been many whistle-blowers i suppose edward  

snowden is a good example of that and also who  else can you think of any other whistle-blowers  

people who have come forward and revealed secrets  julian assange is another one so he came forward  

and he revealed lots and lots of secrets you  might describe him as a whistle-blower as well

yes a lot of people were upset yesterday because  they couldn't use the internet but myori says  

people may have been upset because it would  cause billions of dollars in loss i suppose so  

i wonder how much it costs if you're if you  have a big website or a big server like facebook  

and and it stops working for six hours  i wonder how much money that costs  

per hour or per minute i would imagine it's  thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars  

i think so anna rita says oh i've been  busy recently but i've always watched  

your recorded live streams yes one of the  good things about this is i can do this live  

and then later on you can watch it again as many  times as you want so even though people these days  

tend to complain about websites and technology  there are some good things there are some positive  

things for example you can watch me live  but also you can watch me record it as well  

and don't forget later on there are captions as  well you can have some captions as well later on

think sometimes people get pleasure from revealing  other people's secrets i think there is a sort of  

human maybe it's part of our human nature but i  think people do like finding out other people's  

secrets that's the reason why newspapers have  been so popular for a very long time because  

people like reading the gossip in fact we used  to describe these things as the gossip columns  

in the newspapers people would read all of  the gossip about the celebrities anyone famous  

people are always hungry to find  out something about another person

seven billion dollars was lost yesterday because  facebook and all their associated websites stopped  

working my goodness that's that's a lot of money  actually to be honest that is quite a lot of  

money so we have one or two things to talk  about today we were talking about google  

a few moments ago and i thought um here's an  interesting question that i could ask today

have you ever googled yourself have you  ever put your name into a search engine  

to see what comes up some people believe that  if you do that it means you are narcissistic  

and self-centred and maybe a sociopath i don't  think that's true i think everyone is curious to  

find out what other people are saying about them  on the internet and sometimes i do it i will admit  

sometimes i go on the internet i might go to  google or one of the other search engines there  

are many around and i put my name in i put  mr duncan sometimes i will spell it formally  

and sometimes i will spell it all as one word  but it is very interesting to see what comes up

i was surprised the first time i ever did it  i was very surprised to find out how often  

i actually pop up on the internet it was  a bit of a shock i've got used to it now  

because of course 15 years i've been  doing this i've become used to being  

an internet sensation but it is strange when  you google yourself especially if you've done  

quite quite a few things on the internet and  so your name has been passed around quite a lot  

and the other thing i've noticed  as well is how many people comment  

away from my youtube channel so they write  their own little essays or reviews of what i do  

so that's another thing that's very hard  to do reading someone else's opinion of you

because sometimes the the opinions are not  very favorable let's just say some people  

don't like what i do

and they are they are more  than willing to write about it  

in fact the other week i i found  that i found a video on youtube where  

a couple of guys are completely criticizing  me in a video they're talking about me  

and my youtube videos over the years and  they are criticizing everything i've done

i was a bit surprised to be honest so it  is a very strange feeling when you hear  

other people or you see other people talking about  yourself because you have no control over it i  

think that's one of the difficulties of being a  celebrity you see so if you are well known i'm not  

saying that i'm a celebrity because i'm not please  don't say i am because i'm not i'm not a celebrity  

you have to you have to be famous  for something to be a celebrity

of puzzle so there is a famous phrase and when i  say famous it is a phrase that i've created and  

what you are seeing there are all the  words mixed up so i've mixed these words  

they've mixed these letters up to create a  puzzle but this is a phrase that i often use  

a phrase that you will often hear me say so what  you have to do is take those letters and rearrange  

them and put them into the right order and then  you will have the answer so that particular thing  

is called an anagram anagram it is when you mix  up the letters of a word so is to form a puzzle

of you so have you ever googled yourself another  thing that i discovered from googling my own name  

was the fact that many people are  using my videos without my permission

internet that is how it works if you put  things out there on the internet someone  

somewhere is going to use it and quite often they  will use it without asking for your permission

so that's another thing that i've noticed that a  lot of my videos have been used in other places  

in fact i remember a few years ago i actually  found someone in russia was was making dvds  

of my lessons and selling them on the internet i  wonder how much money he made probably not much

in british schools teachers and those who decide  what is taught in the schools have decided  

to make some changes and they've decided  to change the way young people use certain  

slang words or speech habits so annoying  slang and speech habits are to be discouraged  

in british schools this is something that  apparently is going to be brought in next year  

so teachers are going to try and  change the way young people speak now  

if you want my opinion i don't think that's  a good idea to be honest because english has  

always changed with every generation so  every time a new generation comes along  

there is always a different way of using words  maybe sometimes words have their meaning changed  

i remember growing up in the 90s when we used to  take a particular word and give it an opposite  

meaning a good example of course is bad something  bad was actually good in the 1990s so it's bad  

another one was wicked people don't say  that anymore i know what you're going to say  

mr duncan people don't say that anymore  they don't say wicked when they mean good

okay don't shout at me so yes wicked and also  what was the other one there was another one  

as well and i can't remember what  it was but we used to say wicked bad  

and then i remember in the the 2000s people would  say sick s-i-c-k sick so instead of feeling sick

sick meant good something is good something  is sick it is cool ah so there's another one  

in the 60s people used to say cool if something  was good trendy fashionable we would often use  

the word cool your your clothes are cool mr  duncan your english lessons are cool and i  

think some people still use that to be honest i  think these days you can still say something is  

cool yes i had a cool time at the party last  night it was cool good enjoyable fun exciting  

and of course there are some some things  that people do say not just young people  

but also older people as well so i'm  not just attacking young people here  

i i suppose in a way i'm criticizing everyone so  sometimes there are habits there are habits that  

people have when they are they are speaking one of  them one of the current habits include using like  

all the time when you were talking so this is  one of the things that you might notice with  

young people when they're speaking english when  they're being asked to comment on something or  

generally if they are talking about a particular  subject you will hear young people say like  

quite often in the sentence even though  it doesn't really belong there like

last night i went to a party and like i had  a good time like so quite often young people  

will use like in sentences where they don't  need to use like in fact like is is generally  

used to mean similar something is similar it is  similar to another thing it is like another thing  

and of course like can also be liking something  something you favour something you enjoy  

something you like doing something you are  attracted to is something you like but these days  

like is almost used like a conjunction  it's used all the time in a sentence like

also there is the overuse of you know  when explaining something you know  

so quite often people will say you know at  the end of a sentence you know or if they  

are giving you information or instructions they  will use you know at the end of the sentence  

and another one of course is right they will they  will give instructions they will say something you  

they are giving you advice and then at the end of  the sentence they will say right right right right

as they are talking so that  also can be very annoying and  

quite often when a person is asked to give  their their thoughts or their comments  

on a particular subject quite often  they will begin with the word so  

in fact i think i do it sometimes sometimes i  do it i will begin a sentence sometimes with so

a politician might be asked to answer a question  and they will go so the problem at the moment with  

the waiting lists on the nhs so they will begin  the the sentence or the answer with the word so

andrew says okay is also used as a conjunction  

by some people in their their sentences so  they don't need to actually use those words  

in as they are explaining themselves or they're  describing something there is absolutely no use  

of using those words and yet they still appear so  that is something we are going to try and do well  

not me personally but the teachers in british  schools are going to try and discourage young  

people from using slang terms and also habitual  words so things that you have a habit of using  

and i think we all do it we all do it from  time to time i think we all have little habits  

that that creep into our conversations as we are  speaking maybe sometimes as we are writing as well  

so i think sometimes as you are writing because  you are writing something that is coming from your  

head you might sometimes do the same thing  when you are writing but it is more common  

to do it when you are speaking because quite often  speech is spontaneous and it's very easy to get  

into the habit of using certain words or  phrases when you are speaking i think so  

i will be going in a moment but don't forget  i am with you every day from monday to friday
