Relaxed English Pronunciation: Gotta - Definition and Examples

Hello, everybody! This is Jack from tofluency.com. On this video,

we're going to talk about relaxed pronunciation: Sebastian asks, "how can

you use gonna and gotta?" Thank you so much for this question - now, I have talked

about relaxed pronunciation before in one of my prior videos and you can see that

video which talks about gonna and wanna. Now, in this video, we going to focus on gotta -

and this is a relaxed form of got to. Now, in most cases, it's used with I have or

you have and this gets shrunk to I've gotta, you've gotta, we've gotta - here is

an example: I've gotta go. I've gotta go. This just means I have got to go. I have

got to go. Now, listen to that again - I've gotta. I've gotta go. Now, with gotta, this is the

/d/ sound not the /t/ sound. This is very common in American English: I gotta go.

Here are two more examples: we've gotta do this. this we've gotta do this. This means we

have got to do this. You've gotta be kidding me. You've gotta be kidding me. We use this

phrase when we are surprised and it means you have got to be kidding me. Now,

to make things even more informal, you might hear these phrases used like this:

I gotta go. So, notice we're not using "I've" but instead I gotta go. We gotta do this.

You gotta be kidding me. Those last examples are very informal, so if

you're going to use this type of relaxed pronunciation, do so in conversational
