Phrasal Verbs about the Grocery Store - Grocery Shopping Phrasal Verbs

Hello everyone! Welcome to the next video  in our phrasal verb challenge series.  

In today's video we are going to learn phrasal  verbs about the grocery store. Let's get started!  

The five phrasal verbs we will learn about today  are: pop into, run out, sell out, look around,  

and shop around. These are all very useful  phrasal verbs for talking about the grocery store  

and for talking about grocery shopping in  general. So, let's start with number one.  

The first phrasal verb today is: pop into.  To pop into means to go into a place briefly.  

Which means for a short time. For example, I  need to pop into the grocery store for some eggs.  

This means we just go in quickly and then  

go right back out. So when we just stop for  one thing or two things, we pop into the store.

Our second phrasal verb today is: run out. To run  out of something means to be used up or to be all  

gone. There's no more left. We have run out of  something. For example, I need to go shopping  

soon, I've run out of milk. So, to run out of  means you have no more left. You've run out.

Our third grocery store phrasal verb  today is: sell out. To sell out means  

to sell all of something. So, maybe you have  a product or something you really want to buy,  

but you go to the store and they say sorry we're  sold out. It means we sold all of that thing that  

you're looking for. So, in a sentence we could  say: I'm sorry but the thanksgiving turkeys are  

sold out. You'll have to look somewhere else.  This means that there are no more turkeys.  

We have sold them out, you  have to go somewhere else.  

We can use sold out to talk about anything  that runs out after selling all of it.  

So for example, here we see someone at a music  venue maybe going to see a concert and the tickets  

are sold out. So we can use this phrasal verb  to talk about any time when a product or an item  

is all gone. All of it sells. There  are no more left, it is sold out.

Our fourth phrasal verb today is: look around.  

To look around means to shop without a plan.  So, you just walk into a store and look around.  

You don't have a list. You're not  looking for anything in particular.  

You're just browsing or looking around. For  example, someone might ask you in a grocery store:  

Can I help you find anything? And you might  say: no thanks, I'm just looking around.  

I might buy some things that I suddenly  decide that I want. I'm just looking around.

Our last phrasal verb today is: shop around.  

To shop around means to shop at different  places. To find the best price so you don't  

do all your shopping at one store. You go to  many places to try and find the best price.  

For example, I like to shop around and find  the best prices. I save so much money that way.  

For example, prices of food are going up often.  So, you might go to a few different stores to find  

the cheapest vegetables or the cheapest  milk. This means that you shop around.

Okay let's review our five phrasal verbs  about shopping at the grocery store. First,  

we have: pop into. Which means to just stop  and go in quickly for maybe one or two things  

and then leave you. Pop into the store.

Run out means you have no more  of something. For example,  

I have run out of coffee. I have no more coffee.  I need to go buy some more because I ran out.  

Sellout: this means that the store has sold all of  some items. They have sold out. They have no more.

Next is: look around. Which means to  shop without a plan. You just go in  

and look around. Maybe you will buy something,  maybe you won't. You're just looking around.  

And finally shop around: which means to go to  different stores to try to find the best price.
