Difference between BEAT and WIN - Confusing Verb Pairs in English #englishlessons

Wherever you are I hope you are nice and warm.

We've been asked to describe and explain the difference between BEAT and WIN.

They're both obviously verbs.

And most of the time we use them in connection with sport.

But they are used in very different circumstances.

We always BEAT a person.

And we WIN a thing.

For example, I beat my opponent at tennis.

I won the tennis match.

So my opponent is a person so I use the verb BEAT.

And the tennis match is a thing so I use the verb TO WIN.

So for other sports like football.

I WON the football match with my team.

We BEAT the opponents, the opposition.

So we beat the other team or people and we won the match or won the cup or won the league

which are things.

Okay.

Of course, we can also use BEAT and WIN in non sports issues.

In business, for example.

You might win a very important contract for new business.

So it's a thing.

You might beat your competitors to win that contract.

And your competitors are people or businesses.

So beat the competition, win the contract.
