First things first, what are gerunds and infinitives?

가장 먼저, 동명사와 부정사가 무엇인가요?

Both are verb forms that can act as nouns in sentences.

둘 다 문장에서 명사 역할을 할 수 있는 동사 형태입니다.

Gerunds end in I N G, as in swimming or singing,

동명사는 수영이나 노래처럼 I N G로 끝나는

while infinitives are the base form of the verb,

반면, 부정사는

preceded by to, to swim or to sing.

to, to swim 또는 to sing 앞에 오는 동사의 기본 형태입니다.

Gerunds are used when we want to talk about actions as things or concepts.

동명사는 행동을 사물이나 개념으로 이야기하고 싶을 때 사용됩니다.

We use gerunds in various situations, such as when a verb acts as a subject,

동사가 주어 역할을 할 때,

after prepositions or after certain verbs.

전치사 뒤, 특정 동사 뒤 등 다양한 상황에서 동명사를 사용합니다.

As the subject. Swimming is my favourite hobby.

주제로. 수영은 제가 가장 좋아하는 취미입니다.

Here, swimming is acting as the subject of the sentence.

여기서는 swim이 문장의 주어로 작용하고 있습니다 .

After prepositions.

전치사 뒤에.

I'm interested in learning a new language.

나는 새로운 언어를 배우는 데 관심이 있습니다 .

In this case, learning is following the preposition in.

이 경우 학습은 전치사 in을 따르는 것입니다.

After certain verbs. She enjoys playing the guitar.

특정 동사 뒤에. 그녀는 기타 연주를 즐깁니다.

Here, playing is used after the verb enjoys.

여기서는 Playing 동사가 Enjoys 뒤에 사용됩니다.

Let's move on to infinitives.

부정사로 넘어가겠습니다.

We use infinitives when we want to express purposes or

우리는 목적이나 의도를 표현하거나

intentions or to show what someone wants or needs to do.

누군가가 원하거나 해야 할 일을 보여주고 싶을 때 부정사를 사용합니다.

Desire or intention. I want to go to the movies tonight.

욕망이나 의도. 오늘 밤에 영화 보러 가고 싶어요.

In this sentence, to go indicates the speaker's desire or intention.

이 문장에서 go는 말하는 사람의 바람이나 의도를 나타냅니다.

Obligation. She needs to study for her exams.

의무. 그녀는 시험 공부를 해야 해요.

Here, to study expresses what she has to do.

여기서 공부한다는 것은 그녀가 해야 할 일을 표현합니다.

Decision and desire.

결단력과 욕구.

He decided to quit his job and travel the world.

그는 직장을 그만두고 세계를 여행하기로 결정했습니다 .

To quit and to travel demonstrate the person's decisions and desires.

그만두고 여행하는 것은 그 사람의 결정과 욕구를 보여줍니다. 이제 이해를 확고히 하기 위해

It's time for some exercises to solidify your understanding.

I'll provide a sentence and you'll need to choose whether to use a gerund

She promised to try her best at the game.

He prefers to the gym every morning.

He prefers to go to the gym every morning.

그는 매일 아침 체육관에 가는 것을 더 좋아합니다 .
