How to answer IELTS Speaking Part 3

Hello, everyone.

This is Hong again, talking to you from Vietnam.

I got 8.0 in speaking, and I’m here to help you

achieve the same score or even better score in this skill.

So, in my two latest videos, you have been watching me

taking a practice speaking test part one and part two with my colleague,

who’s also an IELTS teacher.

And today, let’s wrap it up with part three.

In part three, you will have further

questions about the topic you were asked to speak about in part two.

This will give you the opportunity to discuss

more abstract ideas and issues.

This part of the test lasts between four and five minutes.

So, we’ve been talking about the clothes you received from someone.

Now, I’d like to talk about something related to this.

Have you ever given clothes to others as a present?

Well, giving clothes to others, I guess it was a couple of months ago

when I picked a very beautiful dress for my sister as her birthday gift.

I guess she loved it.

After all, it took me a very long time to pick that dress for her.

Why do people dress casually every day,

but dress formally at work?

That’s true. I really don’t know.

Probably, that’s something I haven’t really given it much

thought because I have taken that for granted.

But I guess people look more serious and professional when

they’re all dressed up.

But I know at some companies like Google or Apple, this stuff,

it’s encouraged to wear casual clothes to create

a very friendly working environment.

I guess that can be a thing in the future.

Similar to what I’ve mentioned in part one.

When you can’t immediately think of an answer or don’t know what to say,

you can repeat the question slowly while you’re thinking of an answer.

Giving clothes to others, I guess it was a couple of months ago.

Or admit that you don’t know the answer, or you just don’t usually think about it.

Yes, that’s true. I really don’t know.

Probably, that’s something I haven’t really given it much

thought because I have taken that for granted.

But I guess... Or use some phrases to buy some time.

To be honest with you, I’m absolutely clueless about this,

but I suppose...

This is interesting. I’ve never really thought about it.

That’s a difficult question, please give me a moment to think.

So, why do you think some companies allow employees

to wear casual clothes?

In part three, examiners are allowed to be more flexible

with their questions, which means that they

can ask questions to dig deeper into what you have just answered.

So, prepare to show off your ability by being

able to explain, clarify, or expand your answers.

I think that’s the way to enhance people’s creativity and productivity

because it’s proven that when people are given more

authority at work, in this case, it’s maybe the clothes they wear,

they tend to outperform those who just sit passively and just

follow orders and do what they’re told to do.

Why do people from different countries wear different clothing?

Because of different weather.

Well, hopefully, you already know by

now that we should not give a very short answer like this.

So, in my experience, I usually structure

my answer into three parts.

The point, the explanation, and/or the example.

It helps to give your answer more depth.

I suppose clothing helps people to adapt

to the environment that they’re living in.

Since each region has different type of weather, people dress differently.

For example, people in Finland usually wear fur coats during

the winter because it can get to like minus 30 in the winter.

It’s freezing cold.

In contrast, in Vietnam, during the winter,

people don’t have to wear fur coat like that because they

just need to wear sweaters, and maybe a jacket because

the winter in Vietnam is not as cold as the winter in Finland.

Hey.

Yes, I know the answer about weather is probably not the most perfect answer,

but it comes off the top of my head.

Come on, I have to think on the spot.

So, don’t stress yourself out thinking that you have to give

a very perfect answer because as I said before, the examiner is only

interested in your language, not the content of your answer.

What are the advantages and the disadvantages of

wearing uniforms at work and school?

Well, now, this is something that I have never really thought about

and honestly don’t know what to say, but I have to say something anyway.

So, I’m probably not going to come up with the most intelligent answer,

but here it is.

In terms of advantages, I think that wearing the

same clothes going to work create a sense of belonging among people,

so they are more likely to cooperate with each other better in teamwork.

But I suppose that it has more disadvantages than advantages.

For example, back in high school, I was forced to wear the traditional

dress of Vietnam, which was ao dai, every Monday going to school.

It’s not that I say the dress was not beautiful or anything like that.

It’s very elegant.

It’s just the fact that I had to wear that very tight dress

during this hot, boiling hot summer.

It drove me crazy.
