Speak English Fluently With These 9 Words

the founder of englishanyone.com and the  English fluency guide and today in this  

video we're going to talk about nine words you  can use to speak English fluently all right  

this should be uh an inter an interesting  video an entertaining video hopefully uh  

what I'd like to really talk about in this  video is how to connect different ideas in  

sentences and use longer sentences say more  interesting things that way you can actually  

without even knowing a lot of vocabulary  you can still Express Yourself fluently  

so I know a lot of people they have issues  communicating fluently because really the big  

problem is that they don't know the vocabulary  as well as they think they do so they can write  

things they can read and they can understand the  language but often when they're in conversations  

they just don't feel very confident about saying  things and so they return to using more simple  

sentences more basic things and so I'd like to  help you actually with some more basic things in  

this video and show you that you really don't  need to know a lot in order to speak fluently  

really the key is to know the information very  well even simple things and then use those to  

chain information together so to connect different  ideas like we're talking about this thing and that  

thing or we're talking about this thing doing  something else whatever all right looks like chat  

is uh fired up over here so I will keep an eye on  that but nice to see Chad is working but of course  

uh for whatever reason chat is not working on on  the phone I don't know why that is let me see here

so it should be oh wait a minute  welcome to live chat let me see  

maybe it's actually going to start working for me

hear somebody comment something all right now  why why is it not actually this is so weird  

anyway all right but looks like Chad is working  well let's get started so uh this should be very  

simple one other reason I wanted to make this  video is because I know a lot of people uh maybe  

they watch they watch content on YouTube that's  like don't use these basic words or stop saying  

no or stop saying whatever but that's really bad  advice especially like if you really think about  

how people are learning languages you should be  using lots of basic things and saying them really  

well and then starting to add more difficult  things onto your sentences after that so if  

you have trouble using more basic things then it  doesn't make much sense to start learning more  

difficult things and start using those hopefully  that makes sense all right good to see uh everyone

yeah so I'm I'm I'm I'm smart enough to come  up with a work around a workaround is where  

you maybe don't have the perfect solution that  you're looking for but you have something that  

enables you to solve your problem so I'm  unable to see chat on the phone for some  

reason I don't know why that is I just  updated the app and now it's not working  

of course there's always something like that but  it doesn't matter because I can have my computer  

over here and just follow the chat this way  but I cover my face so I don't see myself  

all right so let's talk about nine words that  you can use to speak English fluently as I go  

through this list uh you should probably know  all of this information but really the point is  

can you make fluent sentences with all of these  things I'm really just going to show you a bunch  

of language patterns and if you can use these  you should be able to have good conversations  

with people and even express some things in  detail but you know they don't need to be really  

difficult ideas all right so the first thing we're  going to cover and this is something I see people  

making a lot of mistakes with let's see if I  can fit this on here so number one is the word  

B look at that very simple all right  now I see people making mistakes with  

this word all the time and of course  this is not just B but we have so I am  

or you are for he she is so this is just one part  of subject verb agreement I don't want to spend a  

lot of time talking about grammar rules but the  basic idea is that if you're thinking okay do I  

use like like this person and that person are  this or are they is that and the same thing  

with regular grammar so this is a or a regular  verbs I should say so this is a tricky thing  

about English especially if you don't have this  in your native language and this is where we we  

need to again connect the subject with the with  the verb and make sure we're talking about the  

right thing so he is doing something I am doing  something they are doing something you should  

be able uh even at a basic level just to make like  very simple sentences with this so right here just  

as a very quick test I'm going to follow in the  chat but I would like to make sure uh people can  

make some even Berry some very basic sentences  and we'll see if you can follow along here so  

just put the answer in the chat so I'm just going  to give you some very simple things I'm just  

going to use B I want you to just put in the chat  which of these I'm talking about all right so they  

you should be like very quick I know this might  seem like a silly exercise especially if you  

know this already but the point is for you to get  very quick with this the same way natives are so  

natives can respond to this automatically so they  are okay you should be very quick with this he  

is you should be thinking about this even if you  don't type it in the chat right now you should be  

very quick with this you should recognize this  is the answer to that question all right so I'm  

going to give you a few more very good so they  are look at that see the more people actually  

give this a try I promise you really the the goal  here is to make sure that these basic patterns  

are are so obvious so clear that you are so quick  with them that you you have to use them correctly  

in conversations okay so you have to it's like  it's it's just that easy for you all right next  

Rob and I so Rob my friend Rob and I Rob and  I Rob just put his name over here Rob and I  

this is Robin I am Robin and  I are Robin I is Rob and I  

Rob and die R all right so again you should be  looking at lots of examples of these things I  

don't want to spend the whole video covering  all of these things but if you have trouble  

with this and also if you have trouble with uh  basic verbs so like Rob and I go to the park I  

go to the park but Rob so Rob goes to the park  I go to the park but together we go all right  

I know this seems like a simple thing especially  if you know all this information already if you  

know you know the word be this is like the first  lesson that people get when they're in uh when  

they're learning languages but often they are  still thinking in their native language when  

they speak even with something as simple as B and  I promise you if you get these lots more examples  

of these we can cover more of these after I go  over uh the other words if you like uh but really  

this should be so Rob or I is Rob or I'll so Rob  and I are Rob or I so Rob or I is Rob or I is

Rob or I is oh Rob or I is do we say Rob

or I is Rob or I is now that sounds funny to me  does that sound funny to you rob or I is coming  

to the Rob or I am coming to the park so you  could say Rob is coming or I am coming so Rob  

is coming or I am coming all right so again even  something basic like this if you were saying Rob  

and I is doing something that would be incorrect  Robin die is we would not say that all right  

so Rob and I are going someplace or if you  say Rob or I am going someplace so Rob uh  

in this case like we have like Rob is or I am  that's why we would use am here so Rob or I

all right

now I know see look at that even even a  simple tricky exam question like this uh  

very basic thing but yes no native speaker  would say Rob or I is doing something  

all right Rob or I am doing something

so either Rob is doing something or I am doing  something all right yes that was a tricky one  

all right so I can go through more examples after  I cover all of the words but again this is really  

to make sure you understand the basics and to  show you that even something like this that's  

really a very very basic sentence people can  still make mistakes so if you are still thinking  

am I saying this correctly am I I'm wondering if  that's correct the whole point is to know these  

things very well so that you have that sense of  correctness it's basically a feeling you have  

where you know something is right or the it gets  the opposite way to explain that is if you hear  

something and you and you think well that doesn't  sound right Rob or I is Rob or I is coming to the  

party Rob or I is coming to the party no we  wouldn't say that either Rob or I uh Rob or  

I uh will come to the party maybe might say that  but we wouldn't say Robert I is doing something  

all right all right I has an exception all right  yeah that sounds off again like the whole point  

is you should be knowing it very well when you  know uh that sounds funny all right that will  

help you uh use these things correctly but  again we can come back to more examples of  

this but uh this is really I put this number  one because this is one of the uh really the  

most important things to master because you use  it so often in conversations so not just the word  

beat but when you are changing this depending  on the person and also for basic verbs as well  

so if you have I go then it would be I go he  she it goes or they go all right so you have  

to be very quick with doing that and usually  people get into trouble when they have like  

the example I gave of more than one person all  right so like he and she are doing something  

all right let's see what about it is it I or  Rob typically we would uh we would put the put  

yourself second it's more of a politeness thing  in conversations so if I'm talking about a friend  

of mine like uh she and I will be doing something  so I put myself second I don't say I and someone  

else all right usually just for being polite I  would put myself second in the sentence all right  

Rob is going to the party where I am or I am not  all right all right let's move on so the second  

thing uh related to this so this is basic  identity where we're saying like one thing  

is something else or we are describing it like  today is hot today is hot I am tired all right  

she and John are not coming to the party so we're  going to talk about the opposite of this as well  

not all right so our next word is not now this  is quite easy to use you don't really have to  

think about much uh but the the reason I'm  putting it here number one because it's very  

frequently used and number two it will enable you  to just say the opposite of anything you're trying  

to say so if you are thinking of like like I  will go to the beach if you if you're trying  

to like you couldn't remember a good way to say  not go or like I will stay at home or something  

you can just say I will not go to the beach I  know a lot of Learners they really care about  

trying to express exactly what they want to say  usually they begin by thinking about something in  

their native language and then they translate  that in their head into English and then when  

they can't think of the exact phrase in English  they get stuck so they forget the word they want  

to say they can't ah what's that exact word I  don't know exactly how to say it like I would  

think about it in my native language and again  what we're trying to do here is really begin with  

basic things and make sure you can say them  really perfectly but that you also feel  

confident about saying them but remember that  we have more than one way to express something  

so if I say I uh stay home for example so I  stay home or I will stay home I can just say I

will not so I will not do something just saying  

the opposite of that so obviously  we can we can say like I I will go

and if you want to remember or like the the  opposite of that verb would be so I will go  

or I will stay but if you can't remember the  opposite verb just use not okay remember there  

are many ways to express things so you don't have  to think like there's a specific verb you want to  

say just say the opposite of of the verb you do  know all right any questions about that yes I want  

so which is correct it's too much hot in here or  it's too much heat in here uh well both of those  

are basically incorrect you might hear the second  one uh used a little bit more but again this is  

why I wanted to make this video because people  ask a lot of things like this and still they'll  

still have a little bit of trouble with even  basic things I promise you if you master these  

Basics you really really will be speaking much  more fluently so let's look at those examples  

even though that's not what we're covering right  here uh but Alejandro yes that's that's a good  

one so which is correct it's too much hot in here  we would really say it's too hot in here it's too  

hot but if we want so it's too hot we're talking  about like the amount of heat uh you could say  

it's it's uh it's too hot in here or there's too  much heat in here uh and you could also say uh  

it's much too hot in here but uh yeah basically  that that's a language pattern you use like it's

two and then something so it's too hot it's too  cold or I'm too tired they are too fast we are too  

slow so if you're talking about the temperature of  a room uh or you're talking about even the weather  

outside the same thing so it's too hot out here  right now in Japan it is getting very hot so it's  

uh it's very hot it's too hot outside get very  hot out here all right sometimes I use I ink to  

replace am not uh is not and are not yes ain't you  can use ain't like I ain't I ain't coming you can  

use that I would not write that though so don't  use that if you're you know writing professionally  

you have to send an email or something but you  will hear that in casual communication I ain't I  

ain't ain't doing something all right so it's too  hot in here gotcha thanks it's sizzling extremely  

hot in here all right uh Civic says you may  find content you publish is perceived very  

badly publish or published all right so Nick uh  that's a good example again not something we're  

covering right here but I'll answer that question  for you remember that you're you're thinking about  

like what what is what is what is the what is  the idea here it's never just about the words  

by themselves you begin with the situation so if  you're talking about content you published like  

only stuff from now and into the past then you  would say the content you published the content  

you published all right but if you're just talking  about in general and also going forward like we  

imagine it will be the same kind of content than  you would say the content you publish the content  

you publish so one is talking about specific  like from the past until now or we're talking  

about in general which includes the past and what  we imagine for the future okay so you can say both  

of those it's not about which is correct they're  both correct it just depends on the situation all  

right so remember we don't begin with vocabulary  we always begin with situations the situation is  

the foundation of communication and then we find  the right words for that and so we might have like  

we have a situation whatever that is and there  are many ways to express that particular thing  

okay let's see two is an adverb adds meaning to  the verb yeah so I get you I don't want people  

to think about like trying to judge what part of  speech things are it's just not helpful for you uh  

in a conversation because you'll be thinking  like no wait is that an adverb or or is that  

a conjunction or something I don't know what  I'm what I'm using so the point is really to  

understand these with lots of examples and that's  how you really develop the sense of correctness we  

want you to understand the patterns of language  that's what native speakers are doing I bet most  

native speakers could not tell you what an  adverb is or what an adverb does all right  

they don't know all right but they use adverbs  every day all right let's see here everyone  

all right now before people start getting more  into that let's see so sleep says yes vocabulary  

plus situation equals understand yes that's a  good way to put it that's a good way to put it  

all right so let's move on so these should be very  simple again we're already seeing some examples  

where these are a little bit tricky these are a  little bit tricky and again I promise you I know  

people think like well I already know to be I know  what that is really are you able to use it like  

always and every time you can use it correctly  confidently and fluently all right if not get  

yourself more review all right uh so the next one  number three here foreign so now we're going to  

start combining different things together and it's  just a very simple way we're going to combine this  

plus that or this with that all right there are  different ways to say this so another one maybe  

you could say with is another example or you  could say Plus if you want to sound a little  

bit more native you can use that as well but  there's nothing wrong with using and we're  

just connecting two different ideas all right so  let's say I want to introduce myself I can say  

my name is Drew and I like to go fishing my name  is Drew and I like to go fishing all right now I  

can even combine a couple of different things  like this I only use the word and for the last  

one or between the last two so my name is Drew  I like to go fishing and I also play uh tennis  

all right so each one of these things by itself is  a sentence you can make my name is Drew that's one  

sentence I like to go fishing that's one sentence  I play tennis that's another sentence but notice  

how we're able to just connect these very easily  by using the word and all right just by using the  

word and I know this is a very simple idea but  again if people have trouble making larger and  

longer more interesting sentences these  are the things you should be looking at  

these are the basic words that really  the foundation where you can actually  

communicate a lot with just one word like  this all right so anytime you want to add  

more information to something and all right so  let me see if you can make some let's see uh  

uh all right I've been told that the word to is  used in negative States sometimes isn't it what  

do you mean give me an example if you have an  example of something let me know and then I'll  

I'll tell you if it's correct or not so yes uh  like the glue that holds sentences together or  

it enables you to build longer sentences  so anytime you are you are thinking about  

one sentence like you're introducing yourself or  you're describing something this is a marker and  

I can write with it this is a marker I can write  with it so I can just continue that sentence by  

saying and this is a marker and I can write with  it this is a marker and I bought it yesterday  

all right the goal here is to help you continue  to weave fluent sentences to continue to speak so  

that you can express longer things and also train  yourself to think and do these things in English  

all right so we want you to begin even with  simple things like this and just start practicing  

expressing yourself you can even write this down  so write down different sentences uh and and make  

different combinations of things and it's really  easy to practice doing that all right even with  

something simple like and all right a marker with  red ink yes so this is a marker and it has Riddick  

this is a marker and it has red ink all right  I think we're doing we're doing all right here  

yes so lots of people are good at listening but  they often have trouble speaking because they're  

thinking about again the the things I mentioned  earlier in this video uh they're thinking about  

things in their native language first and then  translating those and then trying to speak  

so it's much better to build your foundation  especially if you're teaching people I would  

just if I had a class like an actual classroom  I'd be spending lots of time just teaching these  

things and showing people how to use this like  okay make a sentence with a marker using and all  

right this is a red marker and this is a red cap  all right I'm just practicing just getting used to  

using longer sentences by putting two things  together or more two or more things together  

well and he is a genius yes you're  too kindly thank you very much  

now I wouldn't say I'm a genius but yes excellent  use of the vocabulary all right let's move on  

now after I go through all of these we can go back  and make some more sentences I'll show you how we  

can start combining them together but I want  to keep the list moving here so if we have and  

what would really be the opposite of that maybe  not the opposite but uh kind of related related  

to and see if anybody can come up with what  that would be so if we have this plus this  

maybe we want to talk about two different  things maybe they are not related

or or so in this example we're talking about this  thing plus this other thing over here but in or we  

are talking about this thing or something else all  right as an example today I will go to the beach  

or I will go to a restaurant so I will do this or  I will do that I will do this or I will do that

now again I'm making basic sentences just  to give people uh just some quick listening  

practice for that but these are the things like  again you don't need to know a lot of difficult  

vocabulary to make interesting sentences you  just need to know these basic things very well  

all right yeah we'll get into but in a moment  so or very simple so I can think of like what  

do I want to wear today so I can ask myself  a question I can even like begin uh I'm  

talking about something so this morning I asked  myself I was thinking what should I wear today  

should I wear the black shirt or the brown one  the black shirt or the brown one okay very simple  

and I think this should be pretty easy we're going  to keep moving I want to make sure we get all of  

these up and then we'll go back and give you some  more examples of these so we have number five

now but is another fantastic word  and this is something that you  

can use more uh maybe complicated  English so you could say something  

like however so we could say instead  of but we could say like how however

and this is something you would see uh maybe  like more difficult English or academic or  

even in a more professional environment but  but but it's just fine you can just say but  

all right you really should be getting very good  with all of these basic things and then if you  

want to add something else you can replace that  with more difficult vocabulary like however okay  

so but so maybe you're talking about  one thing but you want to contrast it  

or show that some other thing is there so  it's hot but I am wearing a winter coat  

it's hot but I am wearing a winter coat now again  uh it's also important to understand a lot of  

these basic things because when you are thinking  about uh like trying to understand new words or  

your or maybe you're you're reading something and  you come across so you see or you read or you hear  

some more difficult vocabulary it's much easier  to understand it if you recognize these kinds  

of things so if I say like a more difficult  sentence with but so yesterday I was uh I was  

confused by something I don't know I was confused  by a question I was confused by a question but my  

teacher made it understandable all right so I  was confused by something but my teacher made  

it and if you don't know like what what the maybe  you're not prepared for that word you don't know  

I I use a word you don't know uh like it was  perplexing so uh my like my teacher my teacher

said something

perplexing

my teacher said something perplexing so if you  hear this sentence just by itself my teacher  

said something perplexing now with this if you  don't know what that word means you just don't  

understand the sentence all right but if you're  paying attention for key words like this then we  

can probably figure out what it means so let's  say my teacher said something perplexing but

now I understand it all right so but now  I understand it we mean okay now we have  

uh if something is understandable here then  perplexing means it's confusing in some way  

all right again we want to understand these things  there are lots of good reasons to do this but  

one of the most important is that they help you  understand the context of more difficult things  

so if you know at least some of the information  then you can understand new things all in English  

without trying to translate and so this is  how you build up your vocabulary over time as  

you listen to more people so you're learning more  things in English rather than learning it through  

your native language so if you learn more through  your native language that's going to cause you to  

hesitate and translate and organize sentences  in your head before you speak but if you learn  

more things in English like oh look at that I just  learned the word perplexing that's an interesting  

word perplexing but I I understood that because oh  here here's that key word but so my teacher said  

something perplexing but I I understand it now  or but maybe uh I don't know like I I understood  

what it meant later all right so in that case we  understand flexing means like it's confusing or  

hard to understand all right let's see here yes  Lisa says the keywords over here uh in order to  

let's see do you say but me no buts but me no buts  what do you mean by that but me no buts but me no  

buts give me a longer example uh let's see in  order two yes there's another thing we'll cover  

that later but I really even even more basic than  in order two we've got something that I'll give  

you uh that's even easier than that all right  you notice all of these things very short very  

easy these are all basic things that you learn the  problem is most people don't learn these things in  

English so they don't really understand them in  English and as I after I go through all of these  

words and introduce them then we can go back and  start making more sentences or really make your uh  

just make your conversations or whatever any kind  of communication much more fluent all right let's  

see Kevin says uh it is strange because even when  native speakers try to create sentences their mind  

sometimes doesn't give any answer like without  thinking uh the language everything goes in a  

better way I mean but people still you will still  think like even even if I'm thinking right now I'm  

speaking English and English is my native language  and I'm still I might think like I might hesitate  

for a moment and think well what's a better way  to express something I might not know exactly but  

I'm definitely not thinking about grammar rules  so there's a difference between hesitating to  

think about the best way to explain something or  hesitating because you're worried about which rule  

is correct all right so you don't want to do that  one you want to be thinking sometimes it's okay  

now I get I've been you know teaching and and  speaking like this for many many years so it's  

very easy for me without most people realizing  it to to change what I want to think or to plan  

something in my head and to continue speaking all  right but the point is it's okay if you want to  

think but it should be in English and you should  really be thinking more like what's what's a good  

way to express something but also remember that  there isn't just one way to say something there  

are many ways to explain something all right  uh at the year it says uh I don't have a direct  

experience in teaching but uh these doesn't  deter me to reach my goal yes you would say  

but but this doesn't but this doesn't all right  so you would say this doesn't or these don't  

again that's why we practice basic verbs right  here even like it's a verb to be or like so this  

we got uh like just one example so this doesn't

or these

dumbled so I know people might say well Drew these  are so simple why are you telling me stuff that I  

already know well this is this is it if you look  at the even the examples in the chat right here  

in this video you will see grammar errors that are  all basic stuff with this all right if you can't  

master the basics don't bother with the the more  difficult stuff it's just a waste of your time all  

right but I think we're doing all right so far  let's see yes teacher I give you the reason yes  

all right I think we're doing all right there hey  Drew you are a wonderful teacher from Dominican  

Republic thank you very much Francisco let's see  but me no butts don't say but to me you're all  

you're always saying but ah yes so like this is  uh if if you're talking about like a like a child  

let's say I tell my daughter I say hey it's time  to clean up your room we're going to have dinner  

now put your toys away and then she starts saying  like but but but but you know so she's saying but  

I don't want to or but I'm tired or but whatever  in that case I would say hey no more butts or no  

butts just clean your room all right so that just  means stop saying the word but stop giving me  

excuses so she's giving me excuses or reasons  why she doesn't want to clean her room so she  

just spent two hours playing and now I'm tired  but I'm tired but I don't want to clean my room  

but you know but she didn't but you so they're  using lots of but but but and kids will do this  

all the time so parents will say no more butts or  stop it with the buttons all right they're just  

talking about stop using that word stop making  excuses hopefully that makes sense teacher Drew  

all right let's see here uh are although and  though similar to but yes so those are again  

like I I'm not I could go into uh more difficult  things I don't even want to cover anything longer  

than this I really want to make it very simple  and just show you how easy it is to have fluent  

conversations even with very basic things look  at this they're like all two or three words long  

you know we could have with or Plus in there but  we don't even need those words uh to have these  

fluent uh fluent conversations or or talk about  even more complicated things but again it's these  

pieces that help you connect things that's really  the goal here all right so don't butt me yes I  

guess you could you could say that yeah yeah so  don't but me it'd be like yeah using quotes around  

that although at the beginning though at the end  yes so again I'm not going to go go into those  

unless people are asking uh and would like to know  more about that but but but but but but if you go  

back and listen to this video after I'm finished  you will hear me using all of these things

all right so so far we've covered uh some  basic things we've got a few more to go  

and then we'll start putting them together  to make some more interesting see if I can  

fit all these things six seven eight nine okay  all that uh should fit on here all right so six  

so now we're going to talk about a conclusion  or what happens when something else happens  

so I was hot I was hot so I drank some water I  was hot so I drank some water and this is great  

if I'm explaining to someone like you should go to  uh the movie so you can see this uh amazing film  

all right so if I'm telling someone else to do  something uh I I you will you will notice the  

word because is not on this list you don't even  need to use the word because you can just use  

so and it's very easy to remember that way all  right so I was tired so I took a nap so we can  

have these two different things so if we were just  using for example and so I was tired I was tired  

and I took uh now so we can connect these I can  I can say I was tired I took a nap I can say two  

different sentences and each one of them is very  simple I was tired I took a nap but we can also  

connect them into one sentence so I was tired  and I took a nap I was tired and I took a nap  

that's perfectly fine I was tired and I took a  nap or if we want to talk about a reason so why  

I did something I was tired so I took a nap  I was tired so I took a nap now you can you  

notice how the the the words they sound a little  funny let's say we use the word but instead that  

would probably sound funny to people like if  I said to a friend of mine I was tired but  

I took a nap they would they would think what  there's like the something wrong with that  

sentence it's grammatically correct I was tired  but I took a nap but like the situation sounds  

funny all right so usually like I was tired but  I stayed awake so we want to have the opposite  

in there okay so you can have something that's  grammatically correct but it doesn't make sense  

it sounds like a weird idea okay all right any  questions so far serger how about yet yes we're  

not going to yet will not be on this list uh  but if you would like to know more about that  

maybe we can talk about that so we're not talking  about that yet in this video I really want to go  

over the uh the most basic things that you can  use to have fluent conversations so you don't  

need to have you don't need to use yet in order  to do that all right so with these words we can  

actually Express I mean almost anything with  basic ideas and connecting them in different  

ways we can tell stories with these we can express  uh I don't know like really really telling people  

what to do or we can make recommendations or or  lots of different things just with these words  

all right uh so why are so why are lying you  mean why so why are you lying or so why are  

you lying do you mean uh she was scared so  she lied yeah so the food was so delicious  

yes that's another example of where we have so  over here that's us a different use of the word  

so so I'm just talking before uh about like like  this is a reason why we're doing something but  

yes that's another different use of the word so  okay so you will notice even with these we could  

like there's different things we could do with  so so that's another uh very common one as well

remember to learn these things as individual rules  for situations so don't try to learn the word so  

and then they're you know 10 different meanings  of it I want you to just focus on so just for this  

example so yes there are additional ones but  you should Master each of those individually

four another very short word where we're  talking about the purpose of something

uh you can talk about again the reason why you  do something so I bought a new desk for writing

thank you I bought a new desk for writing now  you'll notice that these two are related where  

we can talk about the purpose of something so  you can say you can even change this sentence  

around it I wanted a desk or I wanted to write  better or I wanted to to have a desk for writing  

so I bought a new desk okay so I wanted to do  something so I can remember if you if you only  

have even a few words that you feel confident  about you can still make fluent sentences

okay yes so we can also talk about four so we  can talk about four like having uh the purpose  

like I use this marker for writing I use this  marker for writing I use this marker for cleaning  

my ears I use this marker for cleaning my ears I  use this marker uh to wash my face or for washing  

my face okay but you can also talk about four  like uh the direction of something like I give  

this marker or I made this for you I made this  for you those are two different uses of four and  

again you should be learning them with examples  for those particular things okay uh let's pay  

attention to the class or to the explanation let's  pay attention to the class or to the explanation  

I don't know if that's a question it looks like  it's a question but I don't know what's what it's  

asking uh exactly uh Drew is great every time  I'm able to I'm here uh with him live when it's  

not possible I go to the lessons on replay yes  glad to hear it yep so again you don't need to be

uh another very simple word notice how these  are all very short very easy very common but  

people still make mistakes with these things so  I might have of like a group uh and I'm talking

so to exercise rather than make exercises I like  to exercise for health or for my health you can  

say that as well all right uh let's see up to  this point we have covered the practicalities  

of using content understandable for us yes  so that's another example of using four where  

you're talking about like who the purpose or  the direction of something like this train is  

for uh you know Texas or something so that's the  direction it's moving in this present is for you  

all right so I can talk about the direction  of something using the word for that's a  

different meaning than talking about  the purpose they're kind of related  

I suppose you could think uh but they're two  different things all right uh and the last one

is if if now with all of these things you  can definitely make some more uh interesting  

sentences and so what I'd like to do uh is  is have you just like tell tell me something  

try to make some sentences yourself and I'll  show you how to make them with easier English  

all right so just very simple things connecting  these different ideas but this will be a little  

bit easier for me and it will be more helpful  for you as well if you look at these examples  

now the most important thing from this  video is not just the list of words it's  

actually being able to use these so people  are like ah okay like now I know like we  

should know these words but do you really  know them well all right that's the key  

so if anybody has let's see any any questions  let's see sometimes I use of when I try to make  

conditional sentences of informal ones what  do you mean by that Louis give me an example  

of a particular sentence you're trying to make  all right so if I fail I'll be disappointed in  

myself yes so another good example of if now you  don't often you will you will learn if with then  

but it's not necessary to use the then uh in in  sentences and often native speakers will not put  

the then in there we often teach children like to  write sentences like this so if if this thing then  

then this other thing over here if then if  then all right but you don't need to say that  

so if it's hot I will I will take off my jacket we  don't need the the then I will take off my jacket  

all right uh let's see Tom says the question I did  was asking you if I say I should pay attention to  

your explanation or to the class I don't know if  there was a difference between them or if they  

mean the same what do you mean like the class  like which class this class like the video that  

I'm I'm when you say like my explanation or or the  class you mean like your English class something  

separate is not clear uh what what you're  referring to so again like if we're using  

our basic words over here like I don't know what  I should pay attention to or what I should follow  

or or who I should listen to should I listen to  my English class like maybe you go to an English  

class at school or should I listen to you okay  let me know what you mean by that specifically  

all right I would like to buy a house uh if I had  the money yes so if you're if you're talking about  

like uh if I had money I would buy a house I  would like to buy a house if I had the money  

yes you can say that very good all right is there  a difference between if and whether if and whether

again rather than thinking about  a difference between two words  

you really want to look at specific  situations so like if if I if I go to  

um typically if if you're using if we will have  like one uh it's like a like a conditional where  

like this thing happens then this thing happens  over here but whether we might use like weather  

to talk about like like multiple examples or  something like at least two different ones  

all right so if if it's hot I will go to the  pool all right uh but we could also say for  

weather like whether whether it's hot or not I  will do this so there's even like a different  

a different sentence where we're having like two  different options and they go to the same place  

so whether it's hot or cold I still wear my jacket  whether it's hot or cold I still wear my jacket  

all right so it really depends on the situation  and rather than than trying to just look at two  

words by themselves and seeing like what is  the correct answer or how are they different  

it depends on the situation that's why it's  so important to learn them uh from situations  

all right uh Lewis says uh if I'd studied more I  would I would have passed so in that case you're  

using have I know this it sounds it sounds like so  native speakers are often saying this very quickly  

but I would have

so I would have passed I would have done  something I would have done something so it's  

not it's not wood oh it sounds like that often  native speakers are saying like I would have  

I would have because it's it's just faster and  easier to say this and this is why it's important  

not just to listen to people speaking clear  easy to understand English like I say like in  

these videos but also to hear native speakers and  how they're doing it okay is why we give you both  

influence for life all right so I would have done  that I would have I would have done that it sounds  

like oh but it's not all right if you write this  out the word is have I would have I would have  

all right uh exactly the class which is  happening right now okay all right so I  

still don't understand the question though if  you're you're understand if you mean the class  

or my example my examples are the class it's the  same thing I still don't understand the question

for native speakers as they're learning for young  kids because they learn to write these things and  

they think it's of because they hear people  pronouncing it very quickly and smoothly like  

that so I would of done something we're not we're  not actually writing that though it's I would have  

all right uh let's see Kevin let's see I'm having  dinner so it's harder for me to be chatting yeah  

or you could just say I'm having dinner so it's  hard to chat it's hard to chat so it's hard to  

do something always think about what's like  a simpler way to express yourself it's hard  

to do something so it's hard if you know those  language patterns like hard to do then you learn  

hard to chat or hard to eat or hard to stop  or hard to this and then you can also contrast  

that with easy to do something so it's easy to  stop easy to check easy to play easy to learn  

hard to do something or you can say difficult  as well so that's a particular language pattern  

that I'm teaching my younger daughter right now  like easy to do and hard to do and we just look  

around at or talk about things in the house like  is it easy to draw and she says like no it's not  

easy to draw or yes it is easy to draw so she can  draw a picture or or something like that all right  

but when you hear those language patterns even  these basic things like that that's how you can  

start using these all right then you will start  using them more more fluently and confidently  

all right I'm having dinner okay we got that  one uh so exactly this class which is happening  

right now Cedar said okay I got that one I'll  go if you go Lewis says could have could have  

I've seen these written and spoken in informal  English yes hopefully you will not see anybody  

like writing this the the grammar of people in  general gets worse over time just like every I  

mean everything kind of breaks down over time  especially with uh with texting so people are  

not writing grammatically correct English and  so like their tests are bad and and they're  

they have trouble actually writing uh correctly  anyway so don't don't feel bad about that but  

yes you should be understanding what the correct  thing is and this is especially important in the  

professional world where people do care about  correct English so if you're just texting your  

friend it doesn't really matter you could just say  like Woulda and people understand that but don't  

write that on your job application or whatever  be careful with that all right so real English  

versus real versus a class English yes so what  I call Textbook English it's correct English but  

often it will not prepare you for how natives  really communicate so that's why if you only  

listen to teachers I would have and you hear  only correct clear easy to understand examples  

then it's going to be more difficult when you get  into real conversations and someone says Woulda  

why I would have gone I would have gone I would  have gone I would have gone all right so people  

don't speak like that they're trying to speak  and express themselves as quickly as possible

I would have gone all right so if I were you and  I know about this language I will teach people  

or help them for be understood so you should  do that also I'm well that's what I'm doing  

so I understand the language well so I'm trying  to make the language understandable yes that's

weather so if it was raining oh okay yeah  maybe you like rainy weather that's fine  

says I'm eating ice cream while listening with  Drew very good all right or you can say listening

we we covered so we covered more of those before  and again it's important not to try to learn like  

the word by itself and all of the meanings it's  better to take one word and one use of that and  

then get lots of examples of that meaning and  then you can learn other things by itself so if  

we have the word so we have different meanings  of so so we might have uh like the the example  

before like a reason for doing something I was  tired so I took a nap I was hot so I took a bath  

okay so there are other words like this or other  meanings of a word but you should learn one at a  

time and get a bunch of examples so you very you  feel very confident so you feel very confident  

about using that and then you can learn some other  ones but don't try to confuse Yourself by learning  

all these at the same time this is where a lot  of people make mistakes so they uh so so you're  

hearing me using so a lot so they will try to  learn one word and then all of these meanings  

with maybe one or two examples and then they can't  actually use these things confidently it's much  

better to focus on one get many examples until you  really understand it and then go to the next one  

okay all right uh let's see and Lewis says  thank you so much for your answer it's uh  

loud and clear teacher glad to hear I do like the  way you explain I learned a British accent and I  

get your accent very well yes I think people even  like maybe maybe they're learning British English  

or Australian English or whatever I'm making  myself understandable uh to everybody everybody

you I wouldn't go outside due to the bad weather  yes so in this case you would say if I were you I  

wouldn't go outside all right so if you're talking  about the past now we're going we're getting like  

more complicated here but if we're it's important  to remember the time period you're talking about

so if we're talking about if I were you so let's  just have like a very quick example because people  

might be wondering about this so this is now  uh and this is the like the future over here  

and this is the past if we're talking about  something that happened like in a in a moment  

in the past or if it if there was like some kind  of time time span where something happened this  

time changes how we talk about a sentence okay  or how we describe a situation so if I were you

so if I were you and we're talking about  this so right now two people are talking  

about something that happened in the past so  if I were you I would not have gone out [Music]  

again it's two people right now in  the present talking about something  

that happened in the past so if I  were you I would not have gone out  

so this If This Were Me if it's me in this  situation I would not have done that thing  

now if you're confused about this I don't want to  spend a lot of time talking about this but watch  

the video I have on half where we cover lots of  different examples and and go into detail about  

like from from basic to more difficult examples  of hat all right but the the basic idea from that  

video is that uh have just means we're talking  about an experience that's part of you also so I  

have green eyes or I have a black shirt or I have  a dog or I have something like that these are all  

things that like I I control or I own or they  are a part of me in some way but there are also  

the the things you can't see like my experiences  my memories so I have memories of things okay so  

if we want to talk about something that happened  like it's a it's a part of me in the same way so I  

have been to like I have been to uh the United  Kingdom I've been to Britain or I've been to  

England before so I have that experience so the  experience of going to England I have been there  

all right so just be careful uh when you're  when you're getting into more of these this is  

a much more complicated sentence we're talking  about some basic things over here uh so like  

you like a more kind of basic easier way  to say this is like uh let's see [Applause]

you can just say like I

I would not have and then whatever that thing  is you can say I would not have done that uh  

or like if you're talking about in general  like again this this is an example of someone  

talking about something that happened  in the past but if it's something that  

continues or it's something that maybe will  happen in the future so I would I would not  

I would not uh whatever that that thing is  so like if I were you I would not go outside  

you're talking about in general or you're  talking about the future all right so we  

don't we don't have the experience yet so  we don't have it it's just we will have that  

so if I were you I would not go outside I'm  talking about in the future at some point or  

I'm just talking about in general all right  I would not go outside but again this is uh  

is moving moving us into uh into into deeper  deeper water over here all right uh let's see

you summarize today's lesson please uh this is  today's lesson going over basic words that you  

can use and really a lot of people struggle in  conversations because they they don't know this  

information as well as they should and they're  it's it's important I really want you to think  

we'll look at uh the the basic one of the  the main basic problems that Learners have  

so let's say so you have a like a learner here  this is uh this is our our English learner and  

they want to say something okay so they begin  first by thinking like I'm like thinking what what  

is the idea I want to say in my native language uh  and then I maybe translate that thing into English  

and then I have something in English I want to say  so this is a lot of a lot of mental effort a lot  

of mental processing you need so they first think  about something translate that thing and then they  

have something in English that they say all right  the the alternative to this is like is just like  

to understand the situation and think about it  in basic English okay so I can I can think of  

something complex to say because I'm beginning  with my native language first and this is it's  

just a habit people have where they begin with  what do they want to say in their native language  

and then they translate it and then they speak  or you could just speak something very basic and  

simple all right and so the idea here for this  video is if you really know these things very  

well you can quickly make sentences in English  without having to think and translate and that's  

how you speak fluently so it's it's these steps  over here that prevent fluent communication so  

these are where you get stuck you get stuck every  time you have to think and translate and organize  

sentences in your head because you're adding more  steps to the process but this one is just how can  

I say something simple okay and then with these I  can start building more like different different  

things or longer things so the basic format for  example of a story uh is like X happens so why but  

Z and that's it so today uh I I was tired uh so I  went to sleep but some aliens came into my bedroom  

and got me all right very very basic story and  so we can continue this like so what happens with  

with the aliens so people want to know well what  happens with the aliens I was tired so I went to  

bed but the aliens got me so so what happened so  I was in there in there like alien ship but the  

aliens fell asleep so I escaped from the aliens  okay just as an example but if you look at this  

how simple is that all right and we can  add it make it more complex by putting and  

like I was this and that so this happened  but this other thing happened over here  

and the point is if you can get used to  making these sentences in English first  

just by looking at the basic building pieces of  of the language if you get good at using these  

and you get good by recognizing the patterns and  practicing those and just hearing them again and  

again then you can you can go directly to  fluent speech okay that's the basic idea  

all right uh Lewis says been learning inverted  sentences and it's not rocket science at all or IU  

I wouldn't do that yes that's another good way to  say it all right where IU you can say that as well  

so and as a result consequently yes you can use  more difficult things I did not I purposefully  

am not trying to teach more difficult things but  you certainly can use them I know Learners are  

like well I don't want to say so that's so basic  I want to say consequently as a result of all  

right and that's fine you can use those things if  you like if you can make these sentences fluently  

but if you already are trying to think and  translate in your head or if you're not quite sure  

about using things like what is the correct order  of a sentence like you know what pieces should  

you use or am I using a word correctly or am I I  don't know maybe mispronouncing a word if you are  

worried about all these things in these steps then  it's much better to just practice making simple  

sentences and then you can add consequently and  therefore and as such and and other things like  

that so all those things are great if you want to  use them but I notice a lot of people what the the  

kind of communication I get in emails and comments  and even you can look in the chat right here the  

same kind of thing is there will be uh it's almost  like uh if we if we imagine like like here's  

like a word and then another word over here and  then like over here is like some some difficult  

Advanced expression it's like oh wow like you know  this like difficult word and then like here's like  

some basic errors over here so it's typically like  this you will have the basic errors over here and  

then maybe some like there's an idiom or a phrasal  verb or something that's used correctly but the  

basic stuff is incorrect all right and so that's  why it's much better to focus on these basic  

things make sure you get them right and then you  can just think and communicate directly in English  

all right uh let's see so Professor Douglas says  I would like to learn English because I want to  

teach other people uh to speak so you'd say I want  to teach them to speak teach them to speak all  

right and that's another language pattern you'll  hear this like teach someone to do something teach  

someone to do something teach someone to speak  uh let's see Mac again I think we can also use  

when uh in an alternative to if yes it's correct  I there there are there are other ways to use uh  

these or Express these same ideas yes all right  but I want to give you the most basic easiest  

things that you really should feel confident using  those I want to challenge you right now go ahead  

and type a sentence and I'll read it and if it's  correct then you can use something more difficult  

but if there's still errors in that then you have  a problem that you should probably fix all right  

so grammar using words correctly this is the  most important skill you can develop when  

you're learning a language so it's it's more  important than your accent as long as people  

can understand what you're saying so even if  you have an accent it doesn't matter if you  

speak correctly but if you're not using the  correct words especially in your writing your  

written communication then you will still have  problems and and you will you you will you will  

always be worried about communicating  confidently in an actual conversation  

all right uh let's see I learn English watching  videos in YouTube and I just found Drew's Channel  

but I need to learn much more Yep Tom Focus so if  you enjoy my videos I recommend watch a bunch of  

them uh they will really be telling you about how  to learn English like a native speaker and how to  

get fluent like a native speaker which is what I'm  talking about here so notice these are all basic  

things that little kids excuse me so little kids  know these things as well these are some of the  

first words that kids use like we have the example  with but before so my my daughters I was like but  

I don't want to but but but but but and they  will use words like this in their conversations  

it's very easy to do this my my daughters are  not using the word therefore they're not using  

consequently they might understand me if  I use that but they're probably not using  

that themselves all right so I don't speak to  them that way they might hear me use that with  

someone else and they will understand it  from from the context like ah consequently  

means you know so or therefore all right but  I know that like you have to control yourself  

and this is I talked about this in I don't know  maybe my my previous video where I where I said  

if you are uh if you're like this example over  here if you're using more complicated things  

but you don't use them correctly or you still  have basic mistakes then really get good with  

the basic stuff it's very easy to do and you will  feel a lot more confident in your conversations  

because you know you can express whatever  you want to express without thinking about it  

all right um let's see Lewis is this example if  I were you I would not have gone is an example  

of mixed conditionals so if I were you I would  not um yes I don't again I don't want to get  

into like more difficult and worrying about what  the specific name for for grammar points is you  

can always look up examples if you're if you go to  Google and type in mixed conditionals or whatever  

you want to talk about the different kinds of  conditionals and get examples for that but I  

caution you to really think about the situation  because this is how natives are thinking about  

him they're not thinking like am I using the first  conditional or whatever they're not thinking about  

that they're just thinking about when we use  something all right so I don't I mean I don't I  

only like maybe using the name of a grammar point  just so people can look it up if they want to  

uh let's see what's the right way Professor  Douglas again says what's the right way to  

use the word on to uh I guess that's a use  uh that's used you would see that's used  

to express something related to aim or go well  typically you're talking about like an example  

would be you're physically putting something on  to something else like to go on to something else  

uh HRA in that case would we say if I had been you  shouldn't we well I mean in in no in no time does  

it are you the other person so it's it's not  really like the the rest of the grammar from  

the sentence makes it clear we're talking about  the past so it's not necessary to say like if I  

had been you I would have done something like  that you don't need to you don't need to like  

double the grammar in the same sentence because  we know what we're talking about but in general  

um I I will never be you I was not you in the  past I will not be you in the future so if I  

were you at any time really that's what that means  like it doesn't matter if we're talking about the  

past or the present or the future that so that's  that's the simplest way um because I'm not I'm  

not going to be you in the future so we don't we  don't need to to like make that a special point

um

participle or any other grammar Point uh or use  chat chat gbt chat GPT or Google and just type  

in examples of that so what if you're if you're  looking for those things you should get lots of  

examples and really try to understand the meaning  from all of the examples all right so whatever

it take to learn Japanese what's the  next language that you want to learn  

um so the Japanese uh just to make this clear for  people learning any language so I teach English  

but for people learning any language you want to  get fluent in uh in individual words and phrases  

and then you just keep building that but you don't  what you don't want to do is is just like learn a  

bunch of vocabulary or get a bunch of translations  and then and then like you know information but  

you can't use it so most of the people I help they  know a lot of English that's why they can listen  

to me speak English and they can learn in English  but they still have trouble communicating so I'm  

trying to help people again like in this example  we want to go over some basic things help people  

use them and make even more complex sentences so  the the quick answer to your question is that you  

can get fluent in particular words or phrases in  one minute five minutes it depends on the examples  

you get how good they are or how good the teacher  is and so you can you can become quite fluent I  

would imagine if I could teach someone Japanese  from zero I could probably get them speaking in  

I don't know a few days a week I guess um but  like for languages I want to learn I think it  

would be interesting to learn like something  that's unrelated to English or or Japanese so I  

probably wouldn't learn Chinese uh maybe Arabic  uh or something that has like also a different  

written language it would just be interesting to  try to do that if I had someone who could teach  

me like uh like I know how to teach but I've not  found that but at this point it's just more more  

entertaining and more uh more fun to try to  help the world learn my language so I'm still  

working on that problem rather than trying  to uh trying to like learn other languages  

and then we have some Chinese which you can't  read uh let's see what is my English level if I  

can understand everything you say asks Ellis uh  your ability to understand and your ability to  

speak are two different things so you could have  a high level of understanding and a weak ability  

of speech that's why I talk about people having  an English fluency profile where your ability  

to communicate maybe does everybody know what  the English fluency profile is let me know and  

I can I can uh I can cover that uh in this video  the roof is stronger than the foundation yes so  

often like if if you have like a strong roof but a  weak Foundation then the whole thing will collapse  

all right we don't have technology to rescue the  submarine but in 1969 we had to get to the moon  

it's the the more more arguments I guess  about about Flat Earth uh but I think maybe  

the problem if you're talking about that recent  submarine people don't even know where that is  

um and that was yeah that's a whole interesting uh  interesting interesting story by itself someday in  

the future I will have Drew's fluency yeah again  you you develop the fluency I have piece by piece  

so by understanding this like I know how to use  and boom I can use that this and that and this and  

that or this or that other thing so as you can use  these pieces you become fluent in individual words  

and phrases you don't get fluent in the whole  language you get fluent in words and phrases and  

if you do that then you get fluent in the whole  language all right so over time you develop a  

strong understanding of using the the language in  general foreign what does plateau mean let's see

um why did I now chat like skip skip down again  okay all right um so Plateau I'll give you a  

quick definition of that just by showing you  one and this is another interesting thing you  

learn about uh getting fluent in English is as  you understand something you can start using it  

in different ways and being just more fluent  means you really understand what you're  

talking about so this is a perfect example of  learning vocabulary the native way so here is  

a mountain got some snow on the  top of that a plateau is like this  

it's almost like a mountain that you cut you like  you cut the top of it off and it's flat all right  

like a table so this is a plateau so this is  the physical understanding of the word plateau

Plateau plateau now we can take the more  figurative use of that and talk about like  

learning a skill so often people will be for  example learning a new language and they're  

learning and learning but then oh no [Music]  their skill plateaus all right so we can take  

this as a noun or a verb and express it that  way so here I'm improving so I continue to  

learn more and more but I'm not becoming  a better speaker I feel like I plateaued  

okay so as you learn things like this it's  good if we can learn the physical meaning  

first and then start learning more figurative  uses of that let me know if that makes sense

Learners to watch movies and now this is a  good use of the vocabulary to hear you say  

do you suggest English Learners do something  like do I suggest you do something I wouldn't  

say do I suggest what did you say do I suggest  Learners to watch movies it's just do you suggest  

Learners watch movies you don't need the two in  there foreign so do you uh like do you recommend  

or do you suggest same thing so do you suggest  Learners watch movies with subtitles or without  

subtitles yeah subtitles are fine I I watch  TV shows with subtitles on them that's fine

uh and aren't grammar and spelling really  necessary to speak fluently yes uh I will I  

will I will make this very clear but I make this  point again and again the point is to understand  

the grammar like a native rather than try to study  rules or get translations of that so grammar is  

essential all right but how you learn the grammar  is important so if you try to if you try to learn  

like like a math problem kind of thing so I  have um let's say in a in a Japanese uh Japanese  

textbook it's like okay you should have adjective  plus uh noun plus uh this other thing plus uh  

whatever and like you should think about it  like that so this is a textbook way of trying to  

understand grammar so they give you like the name  of a thing like so this is you know the present  

perfect plus the past simple plus adjective plus  preposition you're not going to learn the language  

that way all right instead you need to begin with  a situation and understand what are the words that  

people use in that this is how Native children  are learning the language so I have a marker here  

take off the cap so I take off the cap and put  the cap on take off put on or I could take off  

my shirt or put on my shirt as well so I'm not  telling you like what what the grammar or or  

like the like the names of things are but you  understand the words because you understand the  

situation so if you're learning English like  a native this is how you do it so not like  

a textbook where you're trying to memorize the  names of grammar rules or you're trying to learn  

through like grammar structures in your native  language you really should be doing it through  

English and making making sure you're getting  understandable messages understandable examples  

all right I've been told by a friend who is  English so who is an English teacher she went  

you have to think in English and stop translating  what you are going to speak if you like it go for  

it yes uh Louis so again the the reason people  translate is because they like it's it's much  

easier to give people a translation of a word  than than to really help them understand it in  

the native language all right so if I wanted  to teach you Japanese I've given this example  

a lot but if I have like a couple of different  things if I want to teach you colors there are  

two ways I can do this the first is just to  give you a translation so I use your native  

language and I just say okay this is this  color this is this color and this is that  

color or I could teach you in Japanese  by making it understandable okay Maka

kudo kudoimaka Kudo crude oil shots

okay so I'm helping you understand it by  connecting the situation with the vocabulary  

I don't need your native language to do that so I  can teach you Japanese in Japanese just by making  

it understandable okay now you might forget  what I taught you you know so the next day I  

would probably give you another example something  related to that look like here's another black  

thing like okay okay so as I do that you will  you will automatically come to understand and  

you will feel like ah look at that I got it I got  it so it's not because I told you what something  

means you discovered that for yourself because of  because of me making the language understandable  

all right so just like here I take a situation  and give you the vocabulary for that situation  

rather than trying to give you translations  or rules all right hopefully that makes sense  

I've already tried to learn Japanese before some  years ago I'd start a course but couldn't finish  

it yes I I'm not aware of a Japanese course  that teaches like the way I'm talking about  

I wish there was one I would be using it if  somebody if somebody could teach me like that  

yes uh so plateau and flat are uh cognates well  it's it's important to understand like a plateau  

has a flat top but a plateau implies like there  was some kind of progress first all right so maybe  

you were like moving up but now you're just moving  sideways all right so it's not exactly the same  

uh yes Plateau is a French word isn't it  I'm from Morocco and I can speak French  

yes I'm guessing Plateau is French it  sounds like it is it should be foreign

all right I think I got those already all right  unit says you're for uh your approach is really  

helpful to think and speak English uh speak  easily and effectively I'm trying to watch all  

your previous video lessons yep glad to hear also  if you'd like what what I do mostly in YouTube  

videos is trying to explain uh the importance of  learning English as a first link and also really  

understanding the basics of the language before  moving on to higher level things I I promise you  

every day even after this video I will get more  comments and more emails from people who have  

high level vocabulary but they still can't speak  either they are complaining that they can't speak  

or they are just like they have uh like the high  level vocabulary but low level mistakes in the  

sentences and and what they're writing so I don't  want you to make that mistake all right but again  

like the the things I do on the YouTube channel  it's talking about principles about how you should  

learn and then if you want to see examples of this  like actually go through the steps you can click  

on the links in the description below this video  and this is where we have Frederick and fluent for  

life so both of those programs they help you  understand these things like a native foreign

how can I teach a student who insists on being  fluent in English in general instead of being  

fluent in a specific phrase segment because  they find it slower believe it's a waste of  

time yeah that's a good question the way I explain  this to people uh maybe I've shown this before

so I am a native fluent English speaker  

and yet uh I only know like a very small portion  of the language so I think they're like 170  

000 words whatever the number is that's the total  vocabulary in common use but I only know a small  

portion of that so I am fluent in this but there  are lots of words I don't know lots of words I'm  

not fluent in lots of subjects I could not speak  fluently about so I could have maybe a basic  

conversation like talking about I don't know some  science thing or or something that I don't know  

much about but I wouldn't I wouldn't be able  to have an interesting conversation about that  

I could probably learn if someone could teach me  I said I would learn that vocabulary but I'm not  

fluent in that and so what I explain to people  this is a kind of a story that a friend of mine  

told me from college he was he was talking with  a professor and this professor was explaining

uh like imagine imagine some grass on the ground  and the professor said if one person steps on the  

grass so we have like this is a foot over here so  one person steps on the grass it doesn't hurt the  

grass at all but if like a hundred people step on  the grass it really hurts the grass and my friend  

was like well there should be some like a little  bit of hurt to the grass if one person steps on it  

and the professor was saying like no it doesn't  then like that doesn't make any sense like there  

should be a little bit of hurt to the grass with  even one person even just a tiny amount and so of  

course if one person can hurt the grass a little  bit then a lot of people can hurt the grass a lot  

and I'm just using this example because it  works the same way with vocabulary so if if  

you understand like one word well then a lot of  these things if you understand them all then that  

improves your overall fluency but it's impossible  to become fluent in the whole language at the  

same time nobody learns like that all right so  just remind people that like uh you can try to  

do things like one way uh and if that's working  for you great but it's probably not working for  

you and this is the easier way to do it so to  get fluent in individual words and phrases and  

then that should be giving you more motivation  to learn even more things so when I teach people  

the idea is to help them really understand one  thing so they they think oh like I can really  

do this I understand it's possible for me to  get fluent if I can get fluent in one word I  

can probably get fluent in 10 words or 20 words or  two thousand okay so that's how that process works

like to learn more about Frederick and fluent  for life but the basic idea with fluent for life  

is it most students they're they have  like most of the people I help really  

so they they're here they already have like a  pretty good knowledge of the language but they  

can't use it fluently and so they want to get up  here to the fluent level and uh part of this is  

not understanding natives who also are going to  speak like the language is faster they're using  

um maybe a less clear accent so some people Mumble  they don't speak well or clearly like I'm speaking  

now and also the vocabulary is much different  so they're they're kind of two two ways that  

Learners are trying to do this by themselves the  first way uh is where they try to jump directly  

to this information maybe by watching movies or  TV shows or something like that so they're trying  

to just go up here uh but it's often too difficult  and they find that they can understand movies but  

they still are unable to speak so this is way  one uh way two is where they're kind of doing  

the same thing over and over again uh where  they're watching more YouTube videos that are  

like taught by you know people like myself who are  trying to you know teach them some new vocabulary  

but because the vocabulary is all clear it's all  easy to understand uh they're not able to get to  

this level so they they learn more but it's not  preparing them for real conversations okay so  

notice these two different approaches either you  try to go directly to this by yourself or you do  

more learning with teachers and this is why lots  of Learners like they could be in English classes  

this is not just YouTube videos but you could be  taking English classes in real life for many years  

and still not be a good speaker because you're  not really prepared for the different language  

of real conversations so what we do is basically  method three where we try to give you a staircase  

to get up to here and that's how fluent  for Life works so fluent for life is giving  

you examples of the real language but we're  going to teach it to you in different steps  

so we don't overwhelm you with information we're  going to focus on vocabulary here's some grammar  

and then here is the same vocabulary but spoken  by natives how natives would say it and you're  

learning about the culture and other things  like that but it's basically taking this and  

giving it giving this to you in the right  steps which also gives you review of that  

information so so you have basically these three  different approaches for Learning and so if you  

if you think you can do this way that's great  a lot of people try to learn that way and some  

people become good speakers that way you can  it's it's quite difficult to do learning more  

with teachers will teach you a lot it will  increase your vocabulary but will probably  

not make you a good speaker because it's not  preparing you you're just like going up you're  

not going up and over all right but this is  how we move you in easy steps and make sure  

it's easy for you to communicate so that's what  fluent for life is so what I do in these videos  

it's it's still a lot of like this kind of thing  where I'm teaching you principles for Learning and  

also teaching you some vocabulary but you really  should be hearing how natives are really using  

those things in conversations and that means you  can't learn with only me so influence for Life  

we've got lots of different examples teachers uh  you know like myself but also mostly people from  

just everyday Everyday Life Giving You examples  of how people would normally speak all right so  

real natives from the UK England United States  Canada Australia people all over the place so as  

you see those examples then you become repaired  for conversations that's how it works foreign

let's see you have the impression to be stuck  

I don't know if that's is that a question  or let's see oh let's see because you're so  

used to quantity and cramming instead of depth  and understanding they just want more and more  

advanced vocabulary yeah and so I try to do that  like and this is this is the balance that I have  

to work with as as like a person on YouTube so  my my videos would probably be more popular if  

I was just like here here's like 10 more phrases  but I just can't I like I can't do it because it  

doesn't really help people very much so that's the  that's the that's the trade-off so you can do that  

you can improve with those things but really it's  the review it's it's all of this it's this process  

here that gets you fluent all right but you the  nice thing is you feel the fluency improving as  

you go through these steps so every lesson  should really be making you feel more fluent  

foreign Louis says how many words do I need to  be affluent uh in English if you mean fluent in  

English remember as I said before uh you don't  need to have a certain number of words because  

you get fluent in individual words and phrases so  this is not about like you don't become fluent if  

you get a thousand words or ten thousand words you  get fluent as you understand each of these words  

fluently so you get fluent in this word you get  fluent in this word or this phrase and then as you  

do that with word by word you know each word word  word then that naturally becomes fluent you know  

it develops into fluency in the whole language  that's how it works so don't worry about trying  

to learn Ten Thousand Words so like students  think and this is I've shown this graph before so  

students think like as they continue to learn more  in war like let's say this is like number of words  

so the number of words and what is say let's see  uh I don't know let's say this is like time over  

here uh I guess it's kind of backwards but just  imagine uh so people think like as they get more  

and more words like suddenly there's a magic  number where fluency goes up but this doesn't  

happen and this is why I know students who know  five words and can't speak I know students who  

know a hundred words and can't speak I know  a student's the students who know like 10  

000 words or a thousand words and still  can't speak and that's because there is no  

magic number that depends on on how many words  you know it doesn't matter how many words you  

know it matters how well you know the vocabulary  okay how well do you know the vocabulary so as  

you learn each one of these things and you know  them very well okay now I really understand how  

to use it I understand it like a native I feel  confident about that now I move on to the next  

one and then I learned that one okay and so we  do this like in fluent for life with particular  

topics so we want to really focus on one topic  make sure you understand it very well and then  

you move on to the next one very easy so you  get fluent in those particular things it's not  

it's not about uh like knowing a certain number of  vocabulary and this is why another good reason why  

little kids speak better than many adult English  Learners even though the adults know more words  

all right remember that all right I'll say that  again often many children native English-speaking  

children speak better than adults so speak better  than adult English learners even though they know  

fewer words all right Tom says Drew speaks  Japanese very well yes I'm trying but again I  

don't I I it's it's I I recognize like I'm getting  fluent in words word by word for Japanese so as I  

learn more words sometimes I might learn something  but don't really understand it so I know that word  

and I can recognize it when I hear it from someone  else or read it in like a newspaper or something  

but I can't really use it confidently myself so  I don't have that ownership level of that word  

so other words I do know fluently in some words I  do not so I know I have to go back and review that  

word or to understand it better to use it fluently  but how do you do that if it wasn't something  

visual like showing us markers so again like if  I'm I'm giving you the like the marker example  

because most people who watch my videos are not  native Japanese or they don't know Japanese anyway  

um so it doesn't make sense for me to give you  like a more difficult I well I could probably  

give you like teach you something more difficult  in Japanese it doesn't depend on like a visual  

example but usually what happens when people are  learning a language is you you should have some  

kind of foundation in the language first uh and  and it's easier to do that with a visual example  

rather than me trying to like explain it to you or  something using translations so you have to pick  

when you're teaching someone either you're going  to make it understandable in the language and  

that's what helps you learn to speak or I'm just  going to give you some translations and grammar  

explanations and that's a little bit faster but  it stops you from speaking so again when I give  

my typical marker example it's just like here's  a physical thing I can have but I can also maybe  

teach you some more difficult things in Japanese  but it would be more difficult to understand and  

like require more of a foundation if I'm trying to  do it all in Japanese all right but it's easier if  

I can begin with this like okay I I explain like  this is a black marker and this is a black shirt  

all right you can make that connection naturally  in your mind and the point is to help you discover  

that for yourself rather than me telling  you what it is so if you're like oh look  

at that like I remember that word and now I  understand what Drew is talking about without  

me like giving an explanation all right so it's  possible to do that but I it you know it's much  

easier for me to do this for people because they  don't have any foundation in Japanese at all  

I actually teach a lesson where I do it in an  alien language and it's the same basic thing  

but just using a language you don't know  

uh let's see the aha moment yes now I got  it all right Xavier in order to translate in  

your head the fact that translating in your  head describes things and events in English  

around you can help what do you think about  that yes so the the basic thing is be simple  

you know marker this is a marker so I can I can  make this a much more complicated sentence this is  

a marker this is the marker I bought yesterday  uh at a store downtown much more complicated  

sentence I'm still talking about this same thing  all right so be simple if you you can recognize  

your level of fluency and like about like specific  words that you're using so if you're good at using  

basic things then move on to more complicated  things all right but do it one step at a time  

all right how to learn not to use recommend  to in a native way how to learn how to learn  

not to use recommend too oh just you  would just uh get lots of examples  

I recommend you sleep well I recommend you eat  uh eat like a good meal every day I recommend  

you practice if you want to get good I recommend  you go I recommend you eat all right and then I  

would also maybe recommend uh like you do that  with different people so I recommend they do  

something I recommend this group of people  does something all right or do something or  

whatever okay so it's the it's the examples of  a thing so what most most Learners are doing

the the the typical ESL so English as a second  language way of learning is you you spend  

like a lot of time getting uh like grammar  explanations and then only a few examples  

but the the native way is the opposite where we  try to help you understand something and then  

give you lots of examples and so with that like if  you're looking for a particular like a sentence or  

language pattern then like I recommend you  do something so you're just talking about  

a particular person and what do you recommend  so I recommend you go I recommend you watch I  

recommend you listen all right so very simple  I recommend and then who is the person you're  

recommending to what what is that what is that  person all right so that's how you get it it's  

all of the examples that really make the lesson  understandable it's not the explanation about  

the grammar it's the understanding that  naturally develops from all the examples  

thank you uh Drew could you create a private room  to teach English I would love to pay for that  

um the the reason I don't offer like any kind  of private lessons like that is that you should  

not be learning only with me the whole point of  fluent for life is that you need to get lots of  

examples of native speakers so lots of different  people speaking English that's how you prepare for  

real conversations so even if you wanted to do  that like it's it's I don't recommend you learn  

that way you wouldn't I wouldn't recommend  you learning with like any like one teacher  

all right you would get used to the sound of  their voice and not get used to the sounds of  

lots of different people speaking and teachers  are always they're trying to be understandable  

all right so you have to be you have to like  be listening for people that that don't care  

if you understand them or not all right so if you  want if if the goal is to get fluent get fluent  

for life that's what we do all right so you don't  need private lessons with me in order to do that  

uh let's see that's what happens to me some  vocabulary but no fluency yep so most people  

are fluent in some words but not fluent in others  and that's because you get fluent word by word you  

don't get fluent in the whole language you get  fluent some words you can use well because you  

understand them well and other words you cannot  because you don't understand them very well that's  

it and when I say like you understand it I mean  you you like recognize how it works you can use  

it confidently uh you're not thinking about like  you don't have any questions about it or doubts  

about the vocabulary or the you know the grammar  pronunciation whatever all right uh let's see in  

Chinese is Kevin it is possible to use simplified  sentence structures instead of full and complete  

sentences when communicating it's a simpler way  to interact with others yes it's also a good way  

to build your speaking confidence and fluency  so as you get good at using simple things then  

you can move on to more simple things or more  I guess adding more simple things together or  

just making more advanced sentences so each of  these things it's a language pattern and you're  

just putting these together in different  ways like the story example I gave before  

all right Ellis says the truth is that I find it  hard to say what I think in English my speaking  

ability is low yep so often you want to be  like beginning with something simple all  

right what's a simple idea most people could say  something they want in an easier way all right  

the point is they're getting good at doing that  in English and this is this is what we teach you  

to do in fluent for life all right how to use  yet phrases uh I'm not going to cover that yet  

uh so that's something I didn't didn't bother to  go uh over in this video but yes this is a another  

another common thing I don't have time to cover it  in this video unfortunately but I would recommend  

you look for examples of that you can let's put  that into Google and just get a bunch of examples  

all right I have to leave let's see good morning  practice makes perfect yes so practice but  

practice understand practices like increasing  your level of understanding by getting more  

examples practice does not mean you trying to  speak and say something like repeating that  

again and again practice means getting a varied  group of examples so this is what I call naturally  

varied review naturally varied review all right  uh Andre please recommend practical ways to be  

more articulate that's this whole video watch this  video again this whole video is the whole way to  

like be more practical about that uh what about  idioms next online class uh maybe it says Lewis  

good morning in Japan good night in Brazil all  right uh John Albert says the stressing the word  

when I speak and take it slowly to communicate  helps me a lot I hope everyone can also do it yeah  

it's frustrating as a teacher yes I think  slee is talking about what I mentioned before  

you just need two percent yeah my best mother  tongue don't exist phrasal verbs what is the best  

way to learn phrasal verbs learn them visually  so I have a whole program about this is included  

influent for life you can also search our YouTube  channel for phrasal verbs and you'll see examples  

of this how to do it you learn it visually first  all right Kevin you are a good teacher because  

you don't want to be the sole English teacher  of your students you encourage your students to  

enhance their English skills through alternative  methods yes I mean I I don't really recommend you  

learn with a bunch of different teachers  I mean they're like you're probably going  

to get some of the same information or it's  going to be more people explaining words and  

grammar because a lot of people don't teach  the way I do but I do recommend you you get  

examples from lots of native English speakers  all right so you need to get those examples  

uh right well almost done here uh kids can  communicate better than adults that's true  

yeah and again it's it's because they get fluent  they really understand that vocabulary not because  

they try to learn more words kids are never  really trying to just learn more vocabulary  

they don't get like a vocabulary book and just try  to learn that it's all natural all right uh I hear  

someone say about proficiency will get you fluent  yes so understanding is what I'm talking about  

all right look at that we got to the end  of the video and the end of the chat uh  

but hopefully this makes sense remember I know  people might be thinking like oh I don't want  

to like review the basics it's like okay  then use them incorrectly in conversations  

you know these are the things that you can do  and you can really make lots more uh fluent  

conversations or have more fluent conversations  even with simple vocabulary and this will teach  

you to do this in English rather than doing it in  your native language so if you are translating get  

to the basics start expressing things you want  to express in simple vocabulary and that will  

help you use it more confidently uh and fluently  all right but it looks like we have uh let's see  

true Drew on the board so students don't get  bored he teaches how to get that aha moment  

students will be flowing yes remember you get  fluent word by word as you understand one word  

or one phrase fluently then you're like ah now  I got it okay that's how you should be thinking  

about language learning it's not trying to learn  like you know ten thousand words or whatever you  

wanna you wanna learn the individual words and  phrases that you use and if you're using them  

you should know them fluently you know them well  all right but that's it for this video if you'd

remember how many natives we have in the program  but lots of different natives uh so all the
