are you happy I hope you are feeling happy today here we go again I'm back

with you live on YouTube yes we are all together once more even though we are

now living through some very strange times we can still share our time

together right here on YouTube so thank you very much for all those who don't

know who I am my name is Duncan I live in England that's where I am right now

and I teach English on YouTube I've been teaching English for ever such a long

time do you know how long I've been doing this for a very long time indeed

so here we go again how is your Tuesday yes it is Tuesday we have made it all

the way to the second day of the week well some people say that Tuesday is the

third day of the week but from my point of view I think it is the second day of

the week we can fight about that later so here we go again for all those who

haven't watched before you are more than welcome to join in wherever you are work

you were watching around the world hello I have my little blue tit once

again sitting above my head I think this is the same bird that comes back every

day I think it is actually the same bird that keeps coming back that's true I

think you think it is the same bird so first of all I have some little bits and

pieces to get out of the way some things I would like to say some things I would

like to mention first of all can I remind you that today

we are running the studio we are actually running the studio setup so

today you can have captions on the live stream so today we have live captions

all you have to do is press C on your keyboard and there are the instructions

so if you want captions if you want to have the captions subtitles live on your

video right now you can all you have to do is press C on your keyboard it's as

easy as that and if you do that you will have live

captions it's magic I really do love technology so much I often say that I

love technology however all you have to do is press C on your keyboard whilst

watching this and then all of your captions will come up and you will be

able to see what I'm saying however there will be a slight delay between my

words and the captions so there will be a slight delay however it will help you

to understand exactly what I'm saying whilst I'm here I have some other things

to mention as well can I say a very big special thank you I don't know why I

always seem to have a lot of trouble with my paper but I'm outside have you

special day is a special birthday of a very special

person sadly he's no longer around to actually celebrate it however it is a

special day to day a special birthday but whose birthday is it I wonder I will

tell you a little bit later on and also I will read a little bit of poetry as

well as a way of celebrating this person's birthday coming up a little bit

later on so thank you very much for all of your lovely emails and comments I had

a message yesterday on the live chat that I missed so sometimes I do miss

your messages sometimes I don't see them clearly for which I apologise however

there is something I want to mention briefly if I can find my piece of paper

here it is mr. Duncan I have a question for you

can you explain what participles are so when we talk about participles I will

explain what they are so first of all I will put this on the screen so you can

see it participle so a participle is used quite often in grammar we use

participles to state something that has happened or will happen or is happening

at the moment so quite often we have past participles present participles and

future participles however technically speaking future participles quite often

seem the same or sound the same as present participles so when we talk

about participles we are talking about a word formed from a verb for example we

have going gone being being and there you can see

them on the screen now I have marked them so a word formed from a verb going

we also have gone we also have being so you can see they include the actual word

itself the verb is actually used in a participle go be so you can see that the

word go and also be is used in those words you can see them there now on the

screen of course it can also be used as an adjective so a participle can also be

an adjective as well for example we can have I will put it on the screen we will

have a working woman or burnt toast a working woman burnt toast so those two

things are describing the appearance of something and yet they also expect they

also contain their own words such as burn and work so work becomes working

burn becomes burnt it has already happened it's happened in the past

you burnt the toast I have burnt the toast so from that you can tell that

this is in the past it is in the past in English participles are also used to

make compound verb forms and I will show those to you right now for example can

you see it so we have going going and has been so he is going this has

been so you can see there with those particular participles we are using the

actual verb I hope you can see that

compound verbs compound verbs I will leave them on the screen so you have a

chance to see them and I will show you the whole thing again just so you can

make a note if you want to see it again there it is on the screen right now I

always like to give you plenty of time to study and also write the things that

I show you on the screen so I hope that is helpful to you of course there are

many participles so often a word such as work or sing is then changed into a

participle I am singing so the word sing becomes singing you are taking part in

that particular action and that is where it comes from

so when we talk about a participle it is something you are doing it is something

you are taking part in we also have the word participate so if you participate

in something it also means that you are doing it you are taking part in that

thing so I hope that helps you and I do like to answer your questions sometimes

I don't see them on the live chat for which I apologize but sometimes a live

chat moves very quickly on the screen so that's the reason why over the past 24

hours there has been a lot of news coming out from many countries around

the world including here in the UK we have some drama taking place here our

Prime Minister here in the UK Boris Johnson

is now being cared for not only in hospital but also in intensive care so

when we put a person into intensive care it means we are giving them very

specialist treatment quite often intensive care means that some of your

bodily functions are being taken care of maybe something is helping you

for example maybe a machine or something is helping you to breathe so intensive

care means that you are receiving complete and I suppose constant

treatment and attention so I'm sure just like me

you will send your best wishes and also best wishes to everyone affected by this

current situation I suppose it would be fair to say that we all we are all in

some way affected by this for example I'm affected by it because I

can't go to see my mother so my mother at the moment is being cared for in a

care home so she was supposed to go home just before this started unfortunately

because of the she can't so she's having to stay where she's being kept and of

course looked after so she can't go home and even worse I can't to go to see her

so that they are not allowing me to go and see my mother either so I must admit

I feel a little unhappy a little sad about that

so I also need cheering up during these strange times so we are all having some

sort of difficulty or maybe we are all being affected in some way by this

current situation but as I always say you are not alone don't worry I am here

I will try to be here every day if I can be here I will be here

that is a promise so I will try my best to be here with you is often as I can

so here I am in my little garden I hope you are enjoying the sights and also you

might hear some of the sounds as well

you might hear some of the birds singing above my head and you might also see

some of the flies buzzing around me as well

things about living in the countryside is at night so many things happen lots

of animals who you don't that you don't see during the day they suddenly come

out at night so around here where I live at night everything changes

lots of things happen animals that you don't normally see or hear come out

including owls so quite often up the top there there are many trees and at night

you can hear all of the owls they are all hooting and calling to each other

and it's very nice actually I must admit I do like the sound of Al's some some

owls have a very nice sound whilst other owls however not so nice sound

oh I see so you were having some some cheese as you know one of my favorite

food is cheese it is of all of my favorite foods that I enjoy

I think cheese is one of my most favorite which reminds me we're having

this Tuesday it is the 7th of April 2020 a special day because today we celebrate

the birthday of a very famous person sadly he is no longer with us

however he left behind lots of wonderful poetry and there is one particular piece

of poetry that he's very famous for so that is something we are going to look

at later on whoa also I have a question for you as well a lovely question what

is your earliest memory so I want you to cast your mind back when we say cast

your mind back we mean think think carefully about the past think about

things that you've done in the past but I want you to go right back I want you

to go way back into the distant past and I want you to tell me what your first or

earliest memory is is there a memory that's in your mind that is from when

you were a child or maybe from when you were very small

some people do they remember things from the past so how far back does your

memory go how far back can you remember so what is your earliest what is your

earliest memory what is it from a past I suppose one of my earliest memories is

my mother taking me to school for the first time so I think one of my first

memories one of my earliest memories must be my mother

taking me to school for the first time ever and I suppose I would not describe

it as a happy memory I would actually say that it is an unhappy memory so one

of my earliest memories is not a happy one it is an unhappy one so I always

remember my mother leaving me at the school gates and she didn't come in she

wouldn't come into the school she just left me

outside the school gate and I can still see I can still see in my mind my mother

getting further and further away from me as I walked towards the entrance to the

school and it's something that really sticks in my memory and it has for all

of these years so I suppose it's not a happy memory I wouldn't describe it as a

happy memory however sometimes memories can be unpleasant ones so I remember

being upset I remember that I was crying as well because I had to say goodbye to

my mother and when you're very young you don't understand these things you don't

really understand what's going on so my memory is my mother getting smaller and

smaller until I had to turn my head and walk away and that is one of my earliest

memories one of my earliest memories Christina this is the season when nature

wakes up and everything becomes colorful it is true Spring has definitely arrived

here in the UK there is no doubt about it I think it is safe that it has

arrived Yuni karina says I think all of us

remember the first day yes but this is one of my earliest memories so I can

remember some memories from my very distant childhood so when I was very

young however that they are very vague so they are not clear memories so I'm

talking about memories that are very clear in your mind things you can

remember so maybe it was your first day at school maybe it was the first time

you ever said goodbye to your parents perhaps you got lost this is something

that happens quite often with children sometimes they they will

wander off so maybe you are going around the supermarket with your daughter or

your son and they are very young and small and perhaps they will wander off

they will walk away and then suddenly they will get lost so perhaps one of

your earliest memories is getting lost as a child or maybe one of those lovely

moments when your mother picked you up and gave you a big hug

perhaps so there are lots of nice memories as well they're not all

horrible memories quite often they are also nice memories as well hello Lill

Lill says I remember watching storms out of the window I watched the lightning

and the Thunder yes I think so I was always very scared of thunder and

lightning I didn't like it at all I used to hate the flash of lightning and then

of course a few seconds later you would get the sudden crack of thunder as well

and sometimes it would really make the house shake so I do remember as a child

being very afraid quite scared of thunder and lightning it is true so any

early memories and the early memories to you

hello anise I would love to live there with you it is a great surrounding it is

quite nice today it's not too bad as I mentioned earlier during the daytime we

have lots of birds lots of squirrels many animals walking around flying

around and at night you also have lots of animals that come out and they often

go into the garden or they come into the garden

we have owls we also have badges as well have you ever seen a badge a badge

are amazing creatures if you ever get close to a badger all I can say is you

are very lucky you are very lucky to get close to a badger because they are

lovely creatures very nice also there are hedgehogs have you ever

seen a hedgehog hedgehogs are very common in the UK you will often see them

at night they are often wandering around in your garden trying to find a little

bit of food especially if you feed the birds

so as you can see behind me I have my bird feeder behind me so many birds come

here during the day and some of the bird food will actually land on the ground so

at night a lot of animals such as bankers and hedgehogs will come and they

will nibble at the food that is on the ground we also have some mice as well in

this garden so we get mice and also another creature called vole have you

ever seen a vole it is very similar to a mouse but the only difference is the

vole has a very long nose they have a very good sense of smell

voles okay I am getting rid of that person you know if you are going to

leave a message and if you are going to be rude or horrible I do have the power

to click you away it's so easy and of course I also have my superhero

moderators as well so a big hello to my superhero moderators you also have the

power to click those people away hello Anna in these days I make pizza more

often than before my family appreciate that a lot but I hope we don't put on

weight well this is the problem I have a feeling during this strange time I think

a lot of people are going to start putting

so I am trying I am trying my best not to eat too much food but sometimes it is

very hard it is very hard to resist the food especially when you are at home and

you are spending lots of time at home sometimes it is hard to resist having a

little nibble in the kitchen my earliest memory says Noemi is from my

sister's birth and I was four years old my son has memories of his two-year-old

of his two-year-old do you do you mean when he was two years old so your son

has memories of when he was two years old so it is interesting when you think

when you try to think back to your very early memories and sometimes I find it

rather disturbing or frightening when I try to think about before I was born

do you ever try to do that I know it sounds strange but sometimes I try to

think or I try to imagine what it felt like before I was born but of course I

felt nothing because I was not alive hello Ezra I remember my favorite

teacher discovered that my voice was beautiful and she asked me to sing every

day so it sounds as if you have a very good teacher

your teacher was very supportive and they would often encourage you which is

I think it is an important part of teaching so if you are a teacher quite

often encouraging your students giving them

encouragement and advice is part of being a teacher it is part of being a

most children are staying at home to be honest with you most adults are staying

looking at the first snow of the season falling down from my window I was always

very happy I loved winter yes so you were a big fan

fun than watching the snow falling from the sky and then you knew the next day

you could go outside and play in the snow so I used to love those snowy days

I don't know why as a child snow always seems magical and amazing

for those who are lucky enough to have snow because a lot of people have never

experienced snow ever in their lives can you believe that mr. Duncan when we say

that you are picking on something what do we mean we often use this when we are

talking about one person being cruel to another person so if one person is being

cruel to another person maybe they are saying horrible things to them or being

unkind quite often we can say that they are picking on them in families quite

often an older child might pick on a younger child in the family so maybe a

big sister will pick on the little sister or maybe a big brother will pick

on his little brother so if you pick on someone it means you are singling

them out you are directing your attention towards them quite often in a

very horrible way so when we say you are picking on someone it means you are

treating them badly or harshly you are bullying them so a bully is a person who

will often pick on people and they will often pick on people who

are weaker than themselves so yes an interesting word an

interesting phrase pick on stop picking on me please

stop saying rude things to me please stop picking on me it's not fair hello

anis again could you suggest some great Hollywood movies well I would imagine a

lot of people at the moment are at home I have a feeling many people are using

their streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime and maybe Disney Plus I

would imagine a lot of people are using those at the moment to entertain

themselves and also their children we often say that the television is a very

good babysitter so people will often put their children in front of the

television and they will leave them there because the television is a very

kindergarten ah yes one of the things we often think about

when we think about our childhood is the friends we made during those years

so maybe during our childhood perhaps we would have very good friends close

friends some people are very lucky because they can keep in contact with

their school friends for many years so maybe they will make friends during

their early school years and then they will stay friends forever and I love

that I am very jealous of people who are able to keep in touch with their school

friends I think it's a it's a wonderful thing

Lena my mother told me that when I was 12 months Wow that is young that is very

young when I was 12 months there was an earthquake in a town where my

grandparents used to live luckily we all survived I'm very pleased to hear that

so you are very young you are only one year old but I doubt you remember that I

don't think you remember that so sometimes we are told things by our

parents things that happened before we started remembering things around us so

I think so yes Ezra I remember that my favourite teacher oh I think I've I've

there are many British movies that you can watch if you want to hear the

English accent being used in a nice way I suppose you could watch films with

Hugh Grant do you like Hugh Grant so he is a

well well Hugh Grant what yes yeah what so yes Hugh Grant is a good actor

British he has a very good accent very nice accent to listen to so there are

films such as for weddings in a funeral he was in that and also Notting Hill he

was also in that so they're two very good British films that you might want

to watch at some point during your isolation time and let's face it we are

all doing that at the moment we are all having some kind of isolation maybe you

are isolated with your family so maybe all of your family is together but you

are in isolation together so I am in isolation I am standing now in my garden

famous poet many poems he is very famous he is one of the greatest poets that

ever lived and one of his most famous poems is this one so here is just a

small part of his very famous poem which is all about daffodils so there it is I

will show you now on the screen can you see it I hope you can see it clearly so

I will hold it there and you can see the words to the poem you can see it on the

the poem to you so this is just a short part of the poem it's not the whole poem

because actually this particular poem is very long I wondered lonely as a cloud

that floats on high over dales and Hills when all at once I saw a crowd

a host of golden daffodils beside the lake beneath the trees fluttering and

dancing in the breeze dogfight there is a dogfight the dogs are fighting they're

fighting in the streets they are fighting over a piece of meat

hello anis well to be expressive means you are using words maybe you are using

your body language or maybe the expressions on your face so to be

expressive is not just about one thing sometimes expressing yourself involves

speaking maybe movement your face even and quite often if you are talking to

another person I always say that you should always make eye contact eye

contact so always try to make eye contact with the person you were talking

to and you will find that if you are talking to someone and you are making

eye contact quite often they will be more interested in what it is you are

saying so expressing yourself well is not about just using the right words

sometimes it is the way you use those words or the way you express yourself

using your hands or your face so quite often expressing yourself is many things

many things it involves a lot of things indeed

in the cafe well quite often we will say either so you can be at the cafe or you

can be in the cafe quite often if we say you are in the cafe it means you are

late located within the building however if you are at the cafe then you can be

inside the building or maybe outside the building so you are there but you are

not inside the building so I will see you at the cafe at 3 o'clock so maybe

the person will be waiting for you outside the cafe however you might also

say I will see you in a cafe I will meet you in the cafe at 3 o'clock we can

clearly see from that actual sentence that you will be inside you will be

waiting maybe you will be sitting at the table waiting for them so at is quite

often the general area around if you are in somewhere it means you are lake

located in a particular place so you are in a cafe you are at the cafe so at is

more general however it still tells you that you are at that location

of course springtime here in England would not be complete without mentioning

the flower that has become synonymous with this particular season the daffodil

this flower can be easily found during spring in both the countryside and the

suburban Gardens all across Britain there are many different varieties to be

found here the most common one displaying an all yellow flower head it

is called the king alfred narcissus there is even a miniature daffodil which

originally grew in Portugal and Spain

the poet William Wordsworth immortalized the daffodil inverse with his famous

poem simply entitled daffodils I wondered lonely as a cloud that floats

on high o'er vales and Hills when all at once I saw a crowd a host of golden

daffodils beside the lake beneath the trees fluttering and dancing in the

breeze

springtime does not arrive at the same time everywhere in the world

for example springtime in Australia comes as we in England prepare for

winter countries in the northern hemisphere experience spring near the

start of each new year while those living in the southern hemisphere

experience spring towards the end
