oh look outside the window right now  it is a beautiful day here in england  

wow all i can say is it really feels like spring  is in the air the sun is out there is a little bit  

of cloud over my head but as you can see things  are starting to look rather nice here in the uk i  

hope things are okay where you are as well yes we  are all here together again it is another english  

addict coming to you live from the birthplace  of english which yes you are right it's england

wow i can't begin to tell you how happy and how  

joyful i feel today oh it's so nice here  today hi everybody my name is mr duncan  

how are you today are you okay i hope so are you  happy i hope you are feeling very happy today

because we are here together once more and yes  we are live across youtube live from england  

a lot of people ask mr duncan where do you  broadcast your live streams from i am in my  

studio which is situated in a small town called  much wenlock in england a very nice scenic place  

i talk about the english language and that is what  i do i've been doing this forever such a long time  

how long have i been doing this for this  year 2021 will be the 15th year 15 years

i don't believe it but yes it's  true i've been doing this for 15  

years towards the end of this year it  will be my 15th year i can't believe it  

and outside i can't believe how lovely the  weather is outside look at that if you look  

at the tree you will be able to see that there is  some lovely cherry blossom coming out on the tree

and well to be honest whenever i see this i  always know that spring is not far away in fact  

yesterday the 20th of march it was the  spring equinox so what that basically means  

is spring has arrived and now the temperature  will start to rise the days will become longer

and all of the lovely flowers will start  to come out of course we do have quite  

a few flowers out at the moment there  are many daffodils growing all around  

and look at this oh my goodness so this is live  from my studio window right now look at that  

so that is the glorious day we are having here  in the uk it looks quite nice to be honest  

i wish i was outside but i'm not i was going to  go outside but of course you know what happens  

at this time of year lots of people  like to go into their gardens  

to cut the grass and use their their  noisy mechanical tools in their gardens

but yes that is the view right now looking out of  the window it is a glorious day very nice indeed  

and we are here together again yes  we've made it to the end of another week  

and almost not quite but almost the  end of another weekend yes it's sunday

i have something new for you today we have a new

wait for it we have a new flags of the world  i have been busy in my studio this week  

doing lots of things and i have been very busy  re-editing remaking also adding some new flags  

as well to my flags of the world and that is  coming up today at around about three o'clock  

of course mr steve will be here and you know what  that means that means that there is a good chance  

a very high probability  that the flags of the world  

will not be at three o'clock because you  know what it's like when mr steve starts  

talking about something he can't  stop he can't stop it's just

well sadly at the moment i'm busy doing  other things including uh making my new  

full english lessons so you may not realize i  am actually making producing and putting out  

new full english lessons there is a new one every  week and there will be a new one next wednesday  

and every wednesday from now on until i tell  you otherwise so yes there are some new full  

english lessons taking place for those who can't  get enough of those new words and phrases and  

it will be every week there will be a new full  english lesson so i hope you're enjoying that  

but that is the reason why i'm not live during  the week because i'm busy doing other things  

editing filming all of this takes a lot  of effort and also time and don't forget  

i do all of this by myself i don't have any  production staff i don't have anyone helping me  

yes i know sometimes mr steve helps me but  

for most of the time mr steve is well he's more of  a hindrance to be honest but don't tell him that  

by the way steve was in the garden yesterday  just to show how how warm and lovely the weather  

has become here in england steve was outside  yesterday doing something what was he doing  

well we are going to have a look at that a little  bit later on yes steve will be here in around 15  

minutes time today we are looking at the subject  of image so when we think of the word image we  

often think of the appearance of something or  maybe the impression that something leaves on us  

as an individual so when you see something and it  can be anything really if you are using your eyes  

to look at something then you are taking  in images and depending on what type of  

image you are looking at will also decide the  effect it has on you the effect it has on your  

conscious brain and also your your unconscious  or your subconscious brain so images images are  

all around us we see them every day some images  are lovely some not so lovely for example i think  

this image is quite nice this is a nice image  this image that i'm looking at now fills me  

full of happiness joy it makes me feel warm  and my heart is filled with a rosy glow  

because i know now whatever happens i know  spring has arrived and to be honest with you  

looking at that lovely cherry blossom growing  on the tree outside my studio window really  

does make me feel quite happy today and i hope  it is having the same uh effect on you as well

is very excited to actually travel somewhere  he can't wait it's all he keeps talking about  

i think today he's going to mention it as well  i would not be surprised if mr steve talks about  

visiting lewis and and your wife as well so we  will see what happens but thank you very much

there are many people out there who wish i  would never appear on youtube again it's true  

i think most of the people are actually  working at youtube to be honest  

hello also anna kobe nice to see you here  as well when we talk about image we can  

talk about the things we see but also it  can be the way we see ourselves so you can  

also have a self image as well your self  image is the image that you have in your mind  

of your own appearance or maybe the way in  which you believe you appear to other people  

so these are things that always fascinate me one  of the things that fascinates me about doing this  

i'm always interested to know the  experience that you're having there  

when you are watching this because it's one thing  that i can't recreate i can't recreate the feeling  

of being there where you are watching me now so  that's the only thing i can't do i can i can think  

i can create i can come up with new ideas but  i still can't fully appreciate the feeling  

of sitting there where you are watching this  now it's very strange it is it is something  

that is very elusive it is something i can't quite  grasp because it's hard to do so your self-image  

is quite often the way you believe you project  yourself to other people so i don't know  

as far as i'm concerned this is okay but  to but to some people maybe this is awful  

maybe this is the worst thing they've  ever seen maybe they are clicking on my  

video now and they're looking and they are  going who is this ugly idiot who is it we  

don't know who this is i'm not going to watch  him but as far as i'm concerned this is okay

so it's one of the difficult things when  you're doing something where you are presenting  

you are putting yourself forward  it's very hard to appreciate  

the effect that you're having on  people who are watching your viewers  

you for example so i'm always fascinated by  these subjects the subject of image self image  

your appearance your style the way you dress  the way you look so there are so many ways  

of expressing those things and yes we are going  to have a look in a moment or two at a lesson that  

i made all about that actual subject oh by the  way for those who are a fan of the sentence game  

i have some good news we have the sentence game  coming up today i want to do it slightly earlier  

so i will try my best to get  mr steve not to speak so much

i can't believe last week how  long we we talked about flowers  

we were talking about flowers for a very long time  last week it seemed to go on forever so that's  

coming up later on we have the sentence game all  about image so all of the words that are missing  

and all of the sentences are connected to  image that coming up as well some lovely

today is a special day because it is the 21st  of march it is also the first day of spring  

after the spring equinox which was yesterday and  also today is the day when everyone has to fill in  

they have to send off their census so at the  moment we are having a census here in england and  

across the uk so everyone has to answer a certain  type of question or many questions about their  

lifestyle their well-being their age who they live  with and all of the people living with the person  

filling in the form so it's quite a complicated  thing but today is the day when everyone does it  

so people always do it on a particular day  and that it's almost like taking a snapshot  

of the country so that's i suppose how i would  describe a census when you have a census you are  

making sure that you are taking care of everyone  regardless of their age sex or their ethnicity so  

i suppose in a way it's a good thing however there  are some people who don't trust the census they  

believe that the information is being gathered  and used in some other way i don't know what  

that means but i think it's a good idea because  it will make sure that everyone is taken care of  

equally and if there are people who are not being  looked after well certainly of a particular age

especially around here where i live there are many  elderly people living in this area so i suppose  

if you live in an area where many people are  older then the services that have to be provided  

might be different so i think it is  a good thing to be honest i really do  

so today is census day in the uk mr steve will  be here soon but first we are going to take a  

look at one of my english lessons this is  a lesson that i made i think it was 2012  

nine years ago wow and you will see  how young and handsome i used to be  

so this lesson is all about image it is an excerpt  the full lesson is available on my youtube channel  

and then after this we have mr steve he will  be right here live in the studio don't go away

in our day-to-day lives image plays an important  role when we are out shopping for fresh food  

we are constantly judging the image of what we  are looking at a red apple might look better  

than a green one a tomato with its stalk and  leaves attached may look fresher the image of  

even the most simple thing can alter the way we  see it of course what is pleasing to one person  

may not be so to another this is why offering  more choice to shoppers is a common one you can  

buy some fresh tomatoes or pick up some that have  been put in a can more choice means more customers

we often see image as being a real  thing the thing we look at has an image  

it leaves an impression on  us but image can also exist  

in the mind we can imagine anything  your imagination allows you to run free

albeit in a dreamlike way creativity tends to  come from this imaginary process so the power  

of imagery is a forceful one be it right in  front of your eyes or up here in your mind

there are many moments in your  life where the way you look  

and how you show yourself to others is important  for example when you are attending job interviews  

while looking for work you need to make sure that  the image you are projecting is a positive one  

there is a strong belief that first impressions  are the most important ones so it is crucial to  

make sure that the first impression you make on  the person who could end up being your employer  

is a good one a smart and tidy  appearance can go a long way

there is a saying in english beauty is  only skin deep this means that the outward  

appearance of a person does not give a  complete picture of what they are like  

it is what lies deep down in a person's character  

that is important also it is worth remembering  that beauty is in the eye of the beholder what  

might seem attractive to one person may be  completely repugnant or repulsive to someone else

take a look at these images  do they affect you in any way

photographs and video playback allow us to relive  

moments from our lives and in some cases  see things that will never happen again

to see those precious moments  again can have a deep impact on you

when you take a photo or a video clip  you are capturing a moment of time  

so it can be cherished forever

my life it is the oldest line i think it's the  oldest one that i've ever said the oldest thing  

that's ever come out of my mouth well it's good  to be here mr duncan on this what is a beautiful  

spring day outside it is absolutely glorious  outside it's a beautiful day and i can't believe  

i can't believe the view outside look at that  it almost looks like a painting but that is live  

that's live right now looking out of the window  and you can see that the clouds are going over  

but it is sunny and i wouldn't say that it's  hot it's not hot but it is it is warm it must be  

yes it's very warm i i just had a i've been out  into the garden and i've just been wearing uh just  

a long sleeve top and i was warm enough i thought  i thought for a moment you you were going to say  

you were naked no palmyra asks if the foresight  i think she means forcythia is in blossom yet no  

it's not it's just starting to come out i noticed  yesterday there are some yellow buds are there i  

didn't notice in fact you were out there yesterday  i'm too busy working mr duncan okay slaving away  

in the garden and uh you know you've got time  to notice these things while i'm doing all the  

hard work i don't think it's really come out yet  palmyra i could do the coffee pedro's invited us  

for a coffee really for me anyway that's a long  way to go because i was talking earlier about  

i was talking earlier about lockdown and and both  of us looking forward to when everything gets  

back to normal although i think we are a long way  from that by the way we just mentioned the garden  

and guess what mr steve was outside yesterday  and he was very busy outside in the garden  

doing something rather special and well it for me  it's always a sign that that spring is coming you  

see it's always a sign that spring is on the way  when mr steve goes out into the garden and he does  

something very special he does his first grass cut  oh yes so we're going to have a look at this now  

not only are we going to talk about this but we  can actually see mr steve in the garden yesterday  

sit back and enjoy as we watch  mr steve mowing the grass

mr duncan i didn't know you  were secretly filming me  

you make it sound so creepy but i wasn't secretly  filming you but i i thought it would be wonderful  

to to show how hard mr steve works in the garden  because he was talking about this just he said  

he works hard in the garden and there you can  see steve yesterday that was he was in the garden  

he he used the lawnmower for the first  time first time it's always a big  

moment i always feel happy it's almost become  a tradition now where when that lawn mower  

remember it started first time because i look  after it yeah i gave it a nice service i like  

doing that um the rage now is everybody to buy  electric uh battery-powered lawn mowers but i'm  

going to stick resolutely resolute there's a  good word determined not going to deviate from

my petrol-powered lawnmower yes because  i like changing the oil every year  

changing the spark plug uh cleaning the spark plug  change uh cleaning the air filter yes i like doing  

that and i've had it eight years now and it always  starts first time it's like a small motor car it  

is it was only if it was i got it very cheap it's  only a small one uh so yes anyone who's this must  

be incredibly boring for people uh who don't  like gardening talking about mowing the lawn  

but you're right once you've done that the first  time you know spring's here and you're on the move  

yes and and of course you enjoy doing it it's nice  to go outside especially when the weather is good  

i don't like doing gardening myself personally  i'm not a gardener but steve loves going out  

especially when the weather is nice it makes  a big difference a couple of people have said  

somebody thought i was listening to music uh with  i had ear defenders yes they weren't uh there were  

no speakers in those and i wasn't listening to  music they just ear defenders to stop my ears  

being damaged by the noise of the lawnmower yes  so that's the problem with petrol lawn mowers they  

can be quite noisy yes and um over a long period  of time it could possibly affect your hearing so  

i don't want to take that risk so i always wear  those nobody else does around here they think i'm  

a bit of a a bit soft i think because i wear ear  defenders when i'm mowing the lawn but you know  

when they're old they'll be deaf and i will be my  hearing will be pin sharp that's great pin sharp  

that's what we say don't when your hearing's very  good pin sharp yes so so if your vision is good  

we say you have 20 20 vision and if your hearing  is very good we say you have pin sharp pin  

sharp hearing and i think steve will be going  around the neighbourhood boasting to everyone  

that he he can hear still because he wore his  ear defenders well the thing is damage to your  

skin through the sun damage to your hearing  through noise that's too loud to your eyes due  

to the strong sun it's cumulative so every so  i might go out once and mow the lawn and there  

might be a small amount of damage but over years  that builds up just like the sun on your skin  

you know one year of sunbathing is  fine but if you do it for 20 30 years  

it's cumulative yeah the the amount  of damage builds up over time  

and i think it does with your ears as well that's  it well i think anything if you are if you are  

giving too much stimulation to your senses maybe  especially in your ears or maybe your eyes then  

i'm not i'm not going to talk about anywhere  else but yes you can wear your body out if you  

if you give it too much pressure or if you you  listen to loud music or maybe watch your computer  

monitor for too many hours and i've spent so many  hours in nightclubs when i was young mr duncan  

that i don't want to accumulate any more damage  yes thomas is back thomas from the czech republic  

oh hello thomas uh hello and welcome back  um says that they've been off because of  

time out because of covid so i hope  personally you weren't sick um but  

lovely to have you back just when you think that  this is coming to an end it seems it's like it's  

like in a movie when they kill the animal that big  monster and they they stab it and they they they  

do all sorts of things to it and then it falls to  the ground and then just when you think everything  

is all right the monster comes back to life in  carazon doing his horrible things so so it's a bit  

like that and we are looking forward to to being  able to have our freedom again i think we were  

talking about this earlier weren't we i think it's  going to be a while before we can just move around  

freely well it's looking positive well you haven't  had your vaccine yet mr duncan i haven't you're  

resisting having your vaccine aren't you because  of i didn't have a particularly good time with it  

so as we've discussed already um so that's put  mr duncan off having his vaccine which really it  

shouldn't because if you don't have it we won't be  able to travel uh and you won't be able to visit  

your mother in the nursing home no because you'll  have to prove probably that you've had the vaccine  

before we'll be able to do certain things oh my  mother doesn't know who i am anymore she doesn't  

recognize me so i'm just this strange shape oh  yeah but you want to go and see her don't you uh  

theodore theodora uh has left us a lovely message  from greece saying thank you for your lessons  

thank you positive vibes yes thank you that's nice  to have that's right there isn't a plural by the  

way ryan bryan says what's the plural of miss  and mrs well there isn't really no if you have  

two people who are who are both married  and they are female you would just say  

wife mr and mrs you don't you don't have a group  of unmarried women yeah what we're going to say  

is wives so what you'll normally say is wives yes  so it if it's a woman who is married or two women  

together we can say that they are wives that  doesn't mean they are married to each other  

but they are both housewives who are married  so that's all it is actually stating in that  

description and of course two men two husbands  so you might have two husbands having a drink  

in the pub and they are they are having their  last drink of beer before they go back home  

and the wife is waiting at home oh but the thing  with men is there isn't there isn't anything  

there isn't a a phrase or a word that describes a  married man really uh mr you're mister i'm mister  

if we were married we'd still be mister it doesn't  change but with a woman it changes from miss  

to misses yes but there isn't really one for man  for a man isn't it i mean you can say bachelor  

for an unmarried man but you don't normally  you know a man is normally always mister  

and a woman if she's not married is miss  yeah or she's misses if she's married well  

you normally quantify it by saying a married  man so a married man a married man a husband  

so he is the person who is married it can it can  be to a woman it can be to a man it can be too  

i don't a hedgehog perhaps in some countries maybe  that's legal now the other the other thing is when  

when a woman's married and she's called mrs and  you put misses on writing or envelopes or anything  

like that as a title as a title that's the word  i was looking for if that uh woman's husband dies  

she still remains mrs yes uh you don't revert  back to miss you still say somebody is misses  

yeah afterwards so an elderly woman for example  and her name was mrs smith uh you couldn't  

actually tell whether her husband was still  alive or not all you know is that she was married  

still is married or was married at some point  okay so it's a little confused that's a quite  

interesting question i am i am very confused but  but of course well my mother when she divorced  

my dad when my mum and dad got divorced my mum  actually kept the father's name my father's name  

so she didn't have to so sometimes  when women are divorced they will  

adopt or go back to their their maiden name which  means that the name that they they were given at  

birth or they might become miss again instead of  misses but yes it's interesting when i was a child  

whenever i received a birthday card or something  it always said master yeah it's strange  

so if you are a child and you receive a greeting  it might not happen nowadays it might not happen  

anymore because it might be seen as old-fashioned  like like an old fart but yes they used to  

master duncan until you were until you'd come  of age which was 18 i think it's 18 well it  

used to be 21 but it's 18 now until you were  classed as an adult then you wouldn't be a man  

wouldn't be called mister until he was 18. you'd  be called master yes but that is old-fashioned  

they don't tend they would just put your name  normally yes now you wouldn't see anybody called  

i would be your surname you wouldn't see master  smith no anymore that's very old-fashioned or  

master duncan james yes you wouldn't  see what if your second name is bates  

that could get very interesting that's probably  why they stopped it beatrice asks what's the  

difference between jeopardy and danger oh well  that's a good one they are kind of the same  

thing they can be used as synonyms so yes jeopardy  just means you are in a situation that might cause  

harm or maybe even distress jeopardy you are in  trouble you are facing a dilemma or a difficult  

situation that you have to get through so  yes jeopardy what was the other word danger  

danger is the same thing so danger is probably  used more i will be honest with you so you're  

more likely to use the word danger instead of  jeopardy jeopardy is is more poetic yes jeopardy  

i would say is danger means you're definitely  in at risk of some kind of physical harm  

if you're in danger you're at risk of some kind  of physical harm if you're in jeopardy it could  

you don't i wouldn't necessarily say that that  meant you were in physical harm it meant you're  

in some kind of peril or some kind of difficult  situation uh so yes the two can definitely be used  

as synonyms yes but danger definitely means  you're in danger of being hurt yes you're  

in some way jeopardy could mean that i mean  you could be in jeopardy of losing your job  

because you've done something uh bad at work  yes so you're in jeopardy of losing your job  

you're not in physical danger but you could  lose your job you're in a difficult situation  

whereas danger is you're in a difficult situation  that could lead to physical okay mavi hello mavi  

yes you have spelt the word right jeopardy it's  also a game show in the united states it's a very  

interesting game show have you ever watched  jeopardy it's very interesting what they do  

they give you the answers to questions and you  have to guess what the question is so i absol  

isn't that just a brilliant idea and i believe  the game show has been running for many many years  

but jeopardy it's a brilliant idea sometimes  a very simple idea can be really really good  

a little bit like the sentence game i think the  sentence game is a very very good idea and we will  

be playing that later on steve very busy on the  live chat today mr duncan thank you for all your  

comments uh and a couple of people have reminded  reminded me us that it's census day yesterday i  

mentioned it earlier and yes oh good and yes we  do get a fine if we don't complete it i don't know  

what i'm not going to do it today no 1 000 pounds  yes vitas asked that yes if you don't if you don't  

do the census although i don't know how they  will find you because you haven't filled it in  

yes well it's interesting because they want  us to do it online in fact i think you can  

only do it online yes i think this year unless  of course you have some disability i think you  

can still receive a hard copy which means that it  is printed on paper i think you can if you have  

certain disabilities so so if you if you can't use  a computer for whatever reason i'm just wondering  

do you know i do we don't have to fill it in  exactly today no but you i mean this the idea  

is that it's this is the state of the situation  on this day it's like a snapshot a snapshot  

but we have got a few days to fill it in there's  no way i'm going on to a government website today  

to compete with 65 million other people to fill in  a census form you can imagine i bet mr duncan we  

will watch the news and the site will have crashed  yes i bet you anything that's what i'm waiting  

for i bet on twitter at the moment i bet twitter  here in the uk everyone is complaining that they  

can't register they can't they can't join or put  their their census and do it live on the on the  

internet because because the government website  has crashed i bet yes i i if i was a betting man  

i would have put some money on that i  would have said yes i think so 50 pounds  

that the website crashes today hazard yes hazard  is another word you can use if there is a hazard  

it means there's a potential for danger yes but  that that's the the external force so jeopardy is  

is quite often the the sense that you have but a  hazard is the thing itself that may cause injury  

or or some sort of discomfort or something that  will get in the way yes you don't say i'm in  

hazard yes you're right mr duncan it describes the  thing that could be causing yes the jeopardy or  

the danger so an obstacle in front of you that  might cause injury is the hazard the hazard is  

that it could be a wet floor uh a wet floor in  in an office building uh that could be a hazard  

it could be something on the road lots of hazards  on the road like a bend uh in the road that you  

can't see properly uh parked concealed entrances  yes uh something that could potentially be a  

danger i always think of ice so if you are driving  on the road in the winter months so so ice is is  

a particular hazard because you can't see it on  the road quite often the ice because it's clear it  

looks as if the road is okay but when you drive on  it you skid and spin around yes saturino you could  

use the word risk in place of jeopardy definitely  uh i would say biohazard says intelligent yes  

hazard from um infectious diseases and bacteria  or viruses or anything or radioactivity yes

on mr duncan there are many things many things  more exciting we have a new flags of the world  

yeah are you ready pedro everyone pedro loves  flack to the world i haven't seen pedro yes pedro  

is here because he invited me for a coffee oh  of course yes let's hope he's still here are you  

still here pedro so and anyone from countries  here is your four minute warning right now  

four minutes from now we have the new flags of the  world it's it's different it's changed i've been  

busy this week editing my little fingers i've been  doing all sorts of things trying to make the flags  

of the world look more attractive but also i've  added some new flags as well some new countries  

are added to the list and if you can't see yours  please let me know and i will add it i can do it  

you see but you've added how many on to the list  um i won't say exactly but it's about four or five  

four or five new flags yes that's going to be  very in electrocution hazard yes people are  

really getting into hazards we like hazard  well there are let's face it we are living  

in the age of hazard when you think about it  intelligence says what danger words would you  

use to talk about coronavirus well risk is a  good one risk of infection yes pandemic yes  

but but the danger the danger is risk so quite  often that that's the word you would use to say  

that that danger exists risk transmission yes of  infection again that that's the movement but yeah  

so when we're talking about the danger  of something quite often with infections  

or diseases we use the word risk risk so i  suppose i'm thinking back now to the mid-1980s  

where when aids was a new thing risk was  a word that was used a lot so if you were  

doing something that that was risky  or had a high risk you had a risk of  

becoming infected so risk so with diseases  anything that can be transmitted steve i would  

say that the word risk is the one that's most  commonly used yes but then specifically with  

infectious diseases like coronavirus  you you start to use words like pandemic  

risk of pandemic risk of epidemic which is just  a spread of infection in in your country uh  

occupational hazard says reinvented tomek hello  yes occupational hazard yes something that is a  

risk for you when you are at work and that could  be if you were a nurse an occupational hazard  

would be risk of catching coronavirus at  the moment if you worked in a hospital  

but if you work in say you've got a manual  job and or you're a roofer for example then uh  

you work on roofs or you work in a in a factory  where there's lots of mechanical equipment then  

your occupational hazard could be the the risk  from being injured by machinery yes um i mean my  

occupational hazard in my job is driving because  driving is if you do a lot of miles every year it  

becomes a significant risk to you so so i suppose  computers sorry working in front of computers all  

day you've got a risk of of having eye damage or  back damage if you don't sit properly in your seat  

yes so that's a good one uh what about the  damage caused by talking too much when i'm  

trying to have my flags of the world we are coming  up we are coming up to three o'clock steve here it  

is this is the moment that everyone everyone  on the planet and that's that's seven billion  

people wow that's a lot of people count them  all if you want but it will take you a long time  

it's three o'clock and it's time to reveal  the new and improved flags of the world

so there it was our new flags of the world  oh what do you think about that steve it's  

very good mr duncan you've been working hard  today uh or well all week uh while i've been  

though i've been working slaving away in  the garden and upstairs in my day-to-day job  

it's nice to know you're not just  watching random videos on youtube  

to amuse yourself although sometimes  this can be very random i think so  

well what are we talking about today mr duncan  we have image we have been talking about image  

i mentioned it earlier i was talking about the  way we see the world around us when we talk about  

image it's actually a subject that encompasses  everything so everything that you see everything  

that you see around you people places nature even  when you can't see anything at all in the dark at  

night there is still an image that comes to you  so so those images can make you feel happy sad  

unhappy scared afraid so image is everything also  i talked about self image as well so when we talk  

about self image that also can be something that  we often think about when we are looking in the  

mirror perhaps how we see ourselves what you  see when you look in the mirror in the morning  

i know sometimes when i look in the mirror in the  morning i i don't feel too happy about what i see  

sometimes have you ever done this steve have you  ever stayed maybe in a hotel or at someone's house  

and they have a mirror in the  house that makes you look either  

beautiful or incredibly ugly if the lighting  isn't right yes it's interesting have you ever  

noticed that sometimes you go to a mirror  especially if you're staying somewhere  

quite often in hotels they they often have  very bright lights in the bathrooms of hotels  

and sometimes when you turn the light on and go in  there and look in the mirror your face looks like  

you look like you've aged by about 20 years  yes it's because often the lights they have  

in hotels are coming they're in the wrong  place you want lights coming directly at you  

that reflect back off your face when you're  looking in a mirror normally in a hotel  

they've got these ridiculous annoying spotlights  all over the place which i hate anyway that's well  

that's another thing they create horrible shadows  yeah you look very ill they're everywhere if you  

go to a restaurant or a bar quite often  they have those small halogen lights that  

shine down on you and and they they either blind  you so you can't see anything for ages afterwards  

you have spots before your eyes or you are  aware that that your face is is being completely  

distorted by the shadows yes i don't like i don't  like those little halogen lights that they put  

in lots of people have them in their houses  in the kitchen in the bathroom yes and i think  

the problem is when you haven't got any hair  uh then you haven't got any protection from  

light coming overhead you haven't got a hair  yeah coming over here that would shield you  

especially it really annoys me overhead lights  especially if you take a photograph yes if you  

take a photograph and you're under a light and  everyone else has got hair so the hair absorbs  

the light but if you you don't have hair that  the top of your head shines like a like a glowing  

radioactive egg like a billiard ball like an  egg glowing in the dark so yes that can happen  

people like the uh flags of the world by the way  oh okay yes there's some nice comments about the  

new flags of the world nothing from uh pedro  so probably pedro went off to make a cup of  

tea and missed it again yes pedro in a minute  will be saying can we have flags of the world  

well we had it we had it yes i like uh i like  sort of diffuse light there's a good word diffuse  

in fact here in the studio we use  professional lighting so everything in here  

is professional quality so all of the lights are  are used by tv stations and production companies  

so quite often the lights that i'm  using here are used quite often  

during interviews on television or in film  productions so that's the reason why the  

light is always good in here because everything  we use is professional so so sometimes you have  

to you see you have to have a little bit of light  that that is flattering mr duncan yes uh olinda  

is from uh angola okay and couldn't see their  flag oh angola that's some angola i'll make a  

note of that make a note of angola and we're going  to add that in yes there are a few actually that  

i know are missing i think congo is also  missing as well the democratic republic of  

congo i think that might be missing i'm not sure  i'm going to review that maybe when i have time  

because as soon as i finish this today i'm  actually doing some more work afterwards so  

it's i'm always busy thank you linda uh and great  to have you um from angola okay angola leslie to  

see you steve has written that down and we will  make a note of that we can take a no actually we  

can look at all the african countries and see  if there's any missing yes because there are a  

lot of particularly small countries in africa that  you probably don't necessarily hear of but lovely

we are going to do the sentence game did  we add uzbekistan yes we did it was there  

uzbekistan is the one i added gazelle it is there  that was the one that you've asked before yes i  

added that and that prompted you to redo flags  of the world i also because i'm very naughty  

i also added the european union flag just  just to annoy people who voted for brexit

yes well well as you say it is a genuine  flag and the other one i added was burundi  

burundi i also added that a country that  i'd missed out anyone from burundi on today  

well that's it you can't complain now  because it's there it's on the list baby

yes alberto hello from valencia well i'd love to  know where people are it's so fascinating that yes  

you've got people from all over the world watching  you and of course the weather's very different in  

in many countries uh taki valor says it's 33  degrees celsius at the moment wow which is  

obviously very hot you must be having i'm not  sure where about you are but obviously you are  

closer to the equator than we are i would say  so the temperature here is is a little better  

than it was so so now now the earth is starting  to to to tilt the other way so instead of having  

all the cold weather we will start to have  warmer weather so yesterday was the spring  

equinox and now the days will get longer warmer  sunnier and everything will will look rather  

nice even though today look outside today that is  the view right now so you can see right here in  

england we are having some absolutely gorgeous  weather and i can't resist showing you the lovely  

cherry blossom coming out on the trees as well in  japan there is there is a huge festival for the  

cherry blossom tree and around this time of year  right now all of the beautiful cherry blossom has  

come out in japan and it is most impressive i will  be honest with you it is amazing to look at yes uh  

intelligent it is it is uh wonderful to know that  we have people watching and for you also that this  

is a big worldwide community brought together by  english brought together by mr duncan's stream yes  

all sharing our different experiences cultures  and uh everything yes that we have to offer and  

it's wonderful this is something i mentioned  last week we we often hear about the bad side  

and the negativity surrounding the internet but  it it does have a lot of positive uses as well  

there are millions and millions of people  right now on the internet doing great things  

for for other people around them and  for society and maybe even humanity  

you see so so the internet might be bad it might  have some some areas that are maybe damaging  

or harmful but not all of it everything everything  that exists can be harmful it can cause some sort  

of harm so anything even i don't know even just  if you go into the garden and get a piece of wood  

you can pick up a piece of a tree and that can  either keep you warm in your house if you burn  

it or you can hit someone over the head with it so  anything can be harmful intelligent is it's going  

very deep very deep and philosophical i don't  mind philosophical thinking about the world and  

our place in it and how is it possible that i am  me uh well that's a very deep question we won't go  

into that now i don't think but it's it's a a very  good question to ask and something that probably  

we all ask of ourselves at some time or other  how come you and i here right now how come  

we're not in a different country somewhere  else well the city well it's fate isn't it  

it's it's it's it's that that fine chance that  that small chance what are the odds of existing  

they are probably infinite well yes when you  think about it think about it the fact that you  

are everyone's here is a result of let's not get  too technical but you know sperm and egg okay uh  

that exact combination had to happen at that exact  moment if a different if you think about it if  

if oh well yes okay if a different sperm went into  into an egg then a different one out of all the  

millions then yes wouldn't he wouldn't exist  or something very very different or slightly  

different okay it's very it's incredible actually  so so it depends on what your core beliefs are but  

uh your core beliefs well it depends on whether  you believe in a soul and and creation or whether  

you believe well whether you're more you don't  have those kind of faiths some people do something  

it depends on your perspective you just it's like  you're brought up you just go all the way around  

to explain something but yeah if you're religious  but if you are you'll have a different that's  

it perspective so some people have a scientific  approach some people have a philosophical approach  

i must be honest with you i am probably a bit of  both of those things scientific and philosophy  

so science and philosophy are two things that  always fascinate me that that is probably yeah  

they are the two things that probably stay on  my mind the most when i'm thinking about things  

in general the world around why do people why do  some people do bad things why are some people evil  

why are some people bad why why do some people do  terrible things whilst others don't is it is it  

just in your genetic makeup well that's it you see  there's a famous book written called the the um  

something gene what's it called the selfish  selfish gene uh which so sort of the idea the  

theory behind that is that we are just  mere uh vehicles to transport the genetic  

information and we are fairly irrelevant  it's the genetic material that is trying to  

uh prolong itself and and carry on and replicate  and the fact that we're here is just a vehicle  

for that to happen yeah but that's very we're  getting too philosophical mr duncan and uh but  

it's it's not really philosophical that that's  more it is that's more sort of chemistry isn't it  

biology and chemistry but we could get into a deep  subject here mr duncan intelligent that's okay has  

started something there which is good okay yes  it was professor richard dawkins by the way  

i'm surprised you didn't remember that i love  richard dawkins he's one of my favourite he he is  

a guy that has written some really good books the  blind watchmaker is one of my favourites and also  

a documentary was made so all about creation and  the theory of evolution and how these things vary  

and both sides of the debate so yes  richard dawkins christopher hitchens  

another one who is one of my favourite writers  and also commentators sadly no longer around  

connell's here today hello connell conall is  here missed you very much we've missed you too

uh yes there are no answers either to these  deep questions uh well there probably are  

answers but we haven't we haven't discovered  them yet that's probably why they're deep  

uh we often think of deep subjects when we when  we think of something that there isn't actually a  

clear answer too my fav my favourite one is is is  uh is to think uh about the universe and whether  

here's one for you in intelligent any anybody  else this is interesting i know by the way you  

if you want to click away don't click away  it's interesting it might be interesting this  

isn't alternate universes no it's not alternate  universes so yeah we think there's one universe  

uh we think there's this universe  but we don't know how big it is  

but it could be that it's infinite yeah there is  one theory that the universe could be infinite  

uh if it is it means anything is possible yes  literally anything even if it's not quite infinite  

but very close to infinite then virtually anything  can happen and anything could happen again yes  

so somewhere what that i mean i won't go into the  depth of it because i don't fully understand it no  

we are noticing that if we are living in an  infinite universe it means that somewhere  

in some time either in the past or in the  future we will exist again because of of just  

the probability it will happen okay so you know we  could be not here just once we could have already  

existed in some other galaxy somewhere else uh  because if you've got an infinite amount of time  

and then anything can happen again but and we  won't go into that so you know somewhere sometime  

we will exist exactly like this again steve so i  think i think steve might be possessed by who is  

it r r hubbard i do no that's not that that that  that's the thing this sounds like scientology no  

it's it's it's no it it if there isn't you look it  up you look up infinite universe and what happens  

as a result of that and it means anything can  literally anything can happen and anything that's  

already happened it could happen exactly again  you've just switched the same way okay you've  

just been over again and a bit like the subject mr  steve is repeating it over and over again i think  

mr steve is caught in an infinite universe loop  yeah in a moment steve steve i've got to stop you  

it's intelligence fault for posing all these uh  philosophical question it's nobody's fault i'm  

i i'm only joking okay i didn't say you were i'm  going to take this water and i've got some urge to  

just sort of splash it all over your equipment see  what happens do you get lots of sparks i wonder  

if i was to just pour this all over all over your  uh equipment here you were getting lots of sparks

i know what you're going to say  and lots of bruises lots of bruises  

you would you would have a very  broken nose for various reasons  

okay we have the sentence game coming up soon we  are talking about image as well the way we see  

ourselves i'm always fascinated this is something  i mentioned earlier steve if you can stay with me  

the you're cruising for a bruising  mr duncan how i i'm always fascinated  

when i think of how we are viewed when when people  are watching this so when you are watching this  

i'm always that's the only thing that i can't  quite understand or grasp because that's someone  

else's feeling it's very hard to feel how another  person is feeling or how they sense something when  

they see it all we can do all we can possibly do  is actually just share it quite often verbally we  

will talk about how it feels or how something  feels when we see it or do it maybe you visit  

a place but but you can't actually feel it  for real it's very strange that that always  

fascinates me i i would love to be able to feel  another person's emotions so so everything you are  

is not there and you are someone else but  you are watching this and you are feeling  

the way that that person would feel then  i find that little thing quite fascinating  

yes uh where are we um valentina yes the idea  i don't fully understand it but the idea is  

in an infinite universe you there will be lots of  slightly different versions of you but there will  

also be lots of exact versions of you the only  difference is you won't know it because you know  

you won't be here but you will you won't have  known you've existed before or that you but you  

can only know that you might exist in the future  but i mean i don't know maybe maybe we have  

existed before exactly down to the last molecule  is possible in an infinite universe but that there  

might not be an infinite universe yes we don't  know one way of looking at it but we well i mean  

the idea behind the genes is if if it's the genes  that have to uh survive and replicate through uh  

human beings then um what's the point i'm trying  to make mr dos yeah that you do live forever  

you do live forever because you do live forever  because you're you aren't important it's the gene  

that's the important thing that information  on that genetic material is has parts gone  

on to your children uh and their grandchildren  so you in that in a way you do live forever but  

not you don't know it because you're dead but  your genes have gone on there's a difference  

between the physicality and the the conscience  so so a person who is conscious is feeling but  

chemicals don't feel they're just things they're  like it's like sending a letter to another person  

so you are you are putting a letter in the  post and imagine your your dna and your genes  

are in that envelope and you were just posting it  somewhere else so the the new person that is born  

is is like the delivery of the letter yes that's  quite a good way of putting it colonel says uh yes  

that that is a that's an idea that  i've read about before carl that  

everything you think about or wish to happen  sooner or later does happen because there is  

an eye there is a theory that there's a sort of  universal sort of somehow energy or intelligence  

in the universe and if you want something and you  think about it enough it will actually happen uh  

for whatever reason isn't that praying that's a  bit like praying isn't it uh possibly so are you  

saying that prayers work well that interestingly  people often say oh my prayer was answered but uh  

they forget about the ones they did pray about  that they didn't uh i think come true it's very  

random that's it i prayed a thousand times and my  my 999 prayers were not answered but my thousandth  

prayer was and that's just random probably  but that might have happened anyway  

but theory about anything you wish or think  about will happen i i've got a feeling that  

could be to do with what might be to do with the  fact that if you really want something enough  

then you will actually then set in motion things  that will make that happen so for example if i  

really want as i do and think about a lot owning  a ford mustang okay then it could probably happen  

because if i'm constantly thinking about it  i'll i could set up a savings account for it  

i could go and do a test drive i could i could do  lots of things which would result in that actually  

happening i mean if you wanted if i wanted i  don't know to get a different job somewhere  

and i really wanted it enough then i would  probably do things like get my cv together  

contact an agency go on to linkedin and then  things would happen as a result of that because  

you're thinking about it then you actually do  things that set in place in motion events that  

could result in it happening not necessarily  it's just happening randomly like a prayer  

but you actually end up setting in motion events  that make it happen well that's different though  

isn't it yeah but i think that's yes i'm trying  can i can i say something no okay okay but that's  

motivation so you are you are getting yourself  excited about doing something yes well it's a  

bit like doing this i suppose it takes a lot of  energy and effort so i'm not praying for this

no it doesn't happen you have to do it so when i  wake up in the morning i have to jump out of bed  

and i don't want to and i come downstairs and  it's freezing cold in the studio and i have to

new ideas and then it takes a very long time and i  feel like jumping out of the nearest window but i  

have to carry on so that motivation is always  there even when things are going completely

sergio says um i i used to dislike facial hair but  then it it grew on me yeah i think that was a joke

and there was a new one you've missed it i  don't think you have really i think that uh  

pedro is joking you know when we're still on at  20 past three or 20 past four it'll be your fault

sierra thank you very much um he seems like putin  says maybe that's it don't mess with me putin  

don't yes don't mess with me because uh you know  uh well well putin has a reputation for being  

fairly ruthless yes okay uh with his enemies uh so  um you know i wouldn't mind having that uh label  

uh i yeah it's quite nice must  be quite nice to be feared  

uh and be it that be at the top of the tree in  terms of uh power influence there's nobody else  

when you think about it with uh with mr putin  in are you saying his name wrong okay then putin  

uh but imagine what it's like it's like  being a lion in the jungle isn't it the  

biggest line in the jungle you know nobody  can challenge you nobody can outsmart you or

physically do anything any harm against  you you're right at the top of the tree  

and yeah it must be quite nice being there  knowing that you know you're in charge  

you've got all that power yes i i want that mr  duncan i wonder that power i'm just picturing  

president putin at the top of a tree do you mean  top of the food chain yes i'm on top of that when  

i say top of the tree i don't mean top of age i  mean you know in terms of in terms of uh being  

the most powerful okay uh and yeah that's what  i mean yes i think that there are probably worse  

people and this is what i always think of  we were watching something last night about  

syria some some absolutely awful things some  images that we were watching so there are  

it's it's very strange when you look at individual  countries and the people who are in charge of  

those places how how different they are as an  individual as a person and and i suppose it also  

ties in quite well with the subject their image as  well so we always have an image of of each leader  

even in this country we have a we have an image  of our prime minister as being a bit of a an oath  

yes a bit a bit of a bumbling almost like mr bean  so that there is there is an image that we have of  

our leader as being a little bit incompetent it's  very strange but other leaders around the world  

they can be seen as powerful maybe putin is a good  example or maybe i don't know maybe if you have a  

president who who often falls over when he's  trying to climb some steps maybe the president of  

the usa that doesn't make you look particularly  powerful did anyone see joe biden tripping up  

not once not twice but three times how do you do  that how do you trip up how do you fall over three  

times well i suppose if you're you know late 70s  yes then and going up they're very steep steps up  

up the uh into air force one they look they look  big steps they look bigger than normal steps  

do they uh and a few presidents have come a  cropper if you become a cropper it means you  

have an accident uh on those steps because they're  very steep aren't they yes and they should have an  

escalator they ought to have something yeah so  instead of him having to run up those steps they  

could have a little chair lift have you seen those  chair lifts you have them on your stairs and you  

just sit and it takes you up slowly so maybe they  could have one of those for him when he's getting  

on the plane they just take him up very slowly  or maybe an escalator as well just taking him  

gently up to the top it will take a while but but  yes he'll get there and he won't fall over or some  

kind of lift that just sort of takes you up maybe  maybe maybe there could be a little pod that comes  

out and they lower it yes onto the tarmac and he  gets in and then it just goes up like thunderbirds  

yes it does seem a bit strange that the president  has to go through that uh i mean it's a bit  

it there's always the potential for something to  go wrong there there was a president president  

ford i think it was uh back in the what was he the  70s 80s president ford the us i think it was the  

mid i want to say the the early 70s he came in i  think he was after nixon and he uh he fell down  

the steps apparently when he was going to russia  or something like that but he shouldn't be rushing  

it shouldn't be russian because he's rushing  you see it's a joke please yourself we have

one of one of the many things that that floats  around inside your head on any any day of the week

biden falling over three times whilst getting into  a plane but anyone falling over is is hilarious i  

know i shouldn't say that but it is when you see  someone fall over if they slip over fall over trip  

it's it is funny and if you and if anyone says  it isn't they are just pretending but it is it is  

funny when you see someone fall over so i don't  know if they don't hurt themselves as long as

if they fall over the edge of a cliff and die well  that's not funny i'm not going to laugh at that  

but i mean just a person who stumbles  or trips up and then they get back up  

so clearly he's all right because you know he  fell over three times but he got on the plane  

so he he at least he achieved his goal  

but it is funny when someone falls over when they  trip up pedro says no we can't pedro i'm sorry  

we can't repeat flags of the world we've done it  if you were having a lunch you know it's at three  

o'clock yes flags of the world it's always  at three three o'clock uk time it's always  

it's obviously pedro's lunch time but you can  obviously watch this again and see the brand new  

version of flags of the world it's amazing it's  in 3d as well so i hope you've got your special  

glasses that i sent everyone so everyone you  should have your special 3d glasses and i hope  

you enjoyed the way those flags came out of the  screen it's almost like you could touch them  

you could stroke the lovely soft material of each  flag as it flitted my condolences to you colonel  

uh as well lots of people making comments there  so we have the the uh sentence game coming up

image image there it is the sentence game  image words i am going to show you a sentence  

all you have to do is tell me what the  missing words are it sounds easy but it isn't

here is the first sentence game for today we have  image words so everything five words everything  

today refers to a person's appearance how they  look maybe the attitude to a person's appearance  

perhaps so let's have a look at this sentence  game the first one here's something looks more  

something with a something something something and  we are talking about a man so that is a big clue  

his that's the yes that is a really big clue  alessandra's kicked us off with with something  

okay that's good that's a good  guess for one of the words  

but we are talking about a man  a certain part of a man's body

how it might appear i'd like  to know a spinoza spinoza  

says sergio he mentioned it before i haven't  heard of that expression before uh spinozas  

i'm going to look that up afterwards maybe  you can explain that for us uh sergio

i had never heard of that have you heard of that  mr duncan i've heard of that but i know i think  

it does maybe refer to one of einstein's theories  i want to say relatively serious i was going to  

say relativity well let's not speculate no i  well i hadn't finished the sentence i hadn't  

finished what i was going to say i was going  to say relativity but i don't think it's that

i hadn't finished this you just wanted to use the  word relativity to make you sound intelligent well  

that's one of the only things i know you see that  wasn't it also string theory i don't think that  

was uh i don't think that's einstein is it no i  think that's one of the things that came along  

that's one of the theories i think that  they're trying to use to connect uh  

um two different theories together with um but i  might be wrong about that with a piece of string

theory it's very trying to link uh probably best  to believe that they're trying to link the sort of  

the big stuff einstein's theory is all to do with  stuff you can see the big the big the big things  

how planets move and galaxies move and things  like that okay and then but then you've got  

all the theories of of all the atoms and how they  move around okay uh and but there are some aspects  

of those two theories that you they can't unite  them together and with quantum physics and all  

that so they haven't nobody's worked out a theory  for everything yet well no i think we know that  

which is uh i think that's what string theory is  i think it's some some uh attempt to link theories

goes on your beard will slowly grow back and there  is a certain name that we give that ah you see

so are we saying that the first two words are face

you are in the right area but this is  a phrase that can be used to describe  

that type of appearance so you know what  it's like steve during the day as you as  

the day goes on your your beard will start  to appear and it will give you a certain  

appearance and i know what it is it has  something to do with the time of the day

to fit in with that last bit but yes so  yeah if you if a man shaves in the morning

of course the missing word five o'clock shadow  a five o'clock shadow is the shadow that men get  

on their faces as the day goes on and  their beard starts to grow homer simpson  

always has a five o'clock shadow homer simpson  has one you see all the time yes it just refers  

to that the the the colour particularly if  you're young and you still got dark hair  

uh then when the beard starts to grow through it  from a distance it's got it looks like a shadow  

coming through and they say five o'clock because  that's about the time when it starts to grow back  

and becomes visible that's it as a kind of a  shadow but of course i mean i didn't shave this  

morning but because my beard is obviously grey now  then i don't get that shadow appearance because  

it's blending in with the pale colour of my skin  that's it and also the flattering lights as well  

the flattering lights will also even out  your your skin and so you can't really see it  

if you've got very dark hair a man say black  hair and you've got a very strong beard  

then the five o'clock shadow will be more  pronounced in you so younger so that is it  

that is the phrase a person with a five o'clock  shadow it can make your face look a little bit  

worn and old uh some people don't look good when  when their their beard is starting to come through  

we used to think that it that it looked like a  person was untidy or maybe scruffy but nowadays of  

course it's quite trendy some people like to have  their their five o'clock shadow or even stubble  

which is when the beard starts to come through  anyway we've got to move on you don't have to say  

just at five o'clock you can use that to describe  any man who say he hasn't bothered to shave  

yes so you you can yeah oh you've got a bit of  a five o'clock shadow there yes i can the more  

virile you are and the more hormones you've got  and the hairy you are the more it will stand out  

nothing that women have to worry about well  not when they're young anyway okay steady steve

to a woman a lady maybe a lady is coming down  the stairs and she is about to go to a party

sentence game the fact that you said woman you see  i think gave it away yes well i have to give clues  

but we've only just started i know is that  correct could be right yes that's very good

steve's sister does all that she does  she's a makeup artist and she can make  

everyone look beautiful i think maybe  one day she will have a go at mr steve  

she will try to make mr steve look beautiful but  intelligent uh thinks that this is lethargy at the  

moment after this lethargy has ended i'm going to  give myself a macaroon yeah well if you're feeling  

tired yeah lethargy is feeling tired and then  you're going to treat yourself with a macaroon  

which is a which is a sweet biscuit made from  coconut no it's not coconut isn't it a macaroon is  

is it coconut i think it's i think it's uh  what's that nut um almonds yes i think it's
