The Top 3 English words you need to know - HAVE

I really have to get a better opening T. Hi, James from EngVid. How are you? I have a lesson

that I have to teach to you today, and I'm hoping it will have the effect of helping

you learn faster. What I want to do is teach you about the three top words in English that

you need to know to improve your English, or even better yet, understand when English

people are speaking to you. Today's letter, uh, letter, today's word, number one, will

have a great impact on you. Now, if you've been listening carefully, I've been using

it several times, okay? Now, this word has to do with actions. We often use it to replace

actions in sentences. So, uh, I'll come back and give you an example in a second. Another

thing we use it for is possession of things, people, ideas. We use it for possession. Sometimes

we use it to show necessity. You need to do it. Right? It's a model. You take the model,

because it is a model, of necessity. Other times, we use it to show the past tense for

models, lost opportunities or past events, when we talk about models. So we talk about

models in the past. It makes models in the past, puts it in the past. And finally, we

use it because it's perfect. It's absolutely perfect. And in all of these things we do,

what we're trying to show, ultimately, is some kind of connection. How is this connected?

How are things connected? How are people, places, and things connected? What is this

word? Well, I'm sure you've heard, don't be absurd, I'm trying to rhyme, okay? Dr. Seuss,

I ain't. Okay. This word is "have." Very powerful word. A lot of times, students come

by and say, "Teacher, I hear 'have' everywhere. They say it for everything. I'm going crazy!"

For instance, some of my students had a party over the weekend. Or they say, "I'm having

a party this weekend." And you say, "What do you mean, having a party?" Well, in this

case, "have" is replacing the action of something. Or the best example to give you is, "I'm having

breakfast." "Having breakfast" means eating. Eating. "Having" means eating. Or they might

say, "I'm having a wonderful time at your party." It means, "I'm enjoying myself."

So instead of saying, "I am enjoying myself at your party," "I'm having fun at your party."

It replaces action verbs. Cool. And in "possession," we talk about possession for, well, things,

people, right? Events. Example. In Canada, I have a brother and two sisters. Now, when

we say "possession," let me be clear here. We're talking about connection. That means

for people, the connection is we have a relationship in our connection. Okay? In the actions, there's

a connection between myself and whatever is happening. If I'm eating breakfast, I'm connected

to the action of eating, right? Me and the food have a connection, not somebody else.

Mr. E is not eating my food. I am connected to that action. I have something to do with it.

When we talk about possession, the connection for people is a relationship that we share.

I have a boss. I have friends. We have a relationship. I do not own them. Okay? Slavery is gone.

Okay? Now, for things, "possession" means the connection is this belongs to me. It is part of

my stuff. "Stuff" means things, my things. I own them, possess them.

When we talk about mobiles of necessity, we say "have to." "Have to" is because there's a

consequence when we say that. Please check out the video on "have to," "need to," and "must."

We have a video on models of necessity. When you have a model of necessity, like I have to do

something, the connection is the consequence comes to me if I don't do it. That is the connection

with that, right? I have to do it because there's a consequence. Connection? I feel the consequence.

Cool. All right? Then we talk about models of the past. Well, when we talk about models of the past,

I'm actually going to skip down to number five. Bear with me. That means wait a second. You'll

know why. When we talk about perfect, "perfect" in English, when we talk about "perfect,"

okay, that could be either the present perfect, the past perfect, or the future perfect.

They're all connected to the past. Operative word "connected." I have been studying English for

six years. The past is connected to the present, right? That's how I know the amount of time.

I hadn't studied English for six years. It means there was a beginning point in the past

and an ending point in the past because I no longer do it, and they're connected to give

you that time. I will have finished my homework by 10 o'clock, which means I've started the homework

not now because I'm speaking to you now, sometime in the future, but it will be finished in the

future. When you look back in that, it goes to the past. Don't worry. There'll be a long lesson

on future perfect. You'll like it, I'm sure. Okay? But it's a connection to that past. So in this

case, when we talk about the perfects, right, we say there's a connection with the past in the grammar.

Now I'm going to go back up here because we take that connection to the past,

because remember, the perfect is actually the verb "have." That's how we have it, okay?

When we talk about modals, "could," "should," or "would," we're saying these were possibilities

that we could have done, but we didn't. So we're connecting that past opportunity. We're saying,

look, that was your opportunity. That connection isn't just random anywhere. It was something you

could have done, you should have done, and we're connecting it to you, and that opportunity is now

lost to you. Cool? Great. So this is why you hear these all the time. A quick review. Actions. I'm

having a party this weekend. Do you want to come? Me, E, and Silver Snake are going to be there.

Okay? Having a party. Possession. I have two markers. Notice the connection here. Necessity.

Necessity. That's the consequence. It comes to me. I want to keep talking. Modals of the past.

okay? Connection is my lost opportunity to help you, okay? And then finally, the perfects.
