Now let's take a look at some practice exercises for the basic usage of the past perfect tense.

Take a look at the first sentence.

‘I blank for six hours before I had a break.’

The verb here is ‘work’.

Remember, we need to say ‘I had’.

기억하세요, 우리는 '내가 가졌었다'라고 말해야 합니다.

No matter what the subject is, say ‘had’.

주제가 무엇이든 'had'라고 말하세요.

And then, you take the past participle of the verb.

그런 다음 동사의 과거분사를 취합니다.

In this case, we would say ‘worked’.

이 경우에는 '일했다'고 말할 수 있습니다.

‘I had worked for six hours before I had a break.’

'나는 휴식을 취하기 전에 6시간 동안 일했습니다.'

For the next sentence, I want you to try the negative form.

다음 문장에서는 부정형을 사용해 보시기 바랍니다.

‘We blank TV before we listened to the radio.’

'우리는 라디오를 듣기 전에 TV를 시청하지 않습니다.'

Remember, for the negative form, we say ‘had not’

부정형의 경우 'had not'이라고 말

or we use the contraction, ‘hadn't’.

하거나 'hadn't'라는 축약형을 사용한다는 점을 기억하세요.

‘We hadn’t’.

'우리는 그렇지 않았습니다'.

And then, we need the past participle.

그리고 과거분사가 필요합니다.

‘We hadn't watched TV before we listened to the radio.’

'우리는 라디오를 듣기 전에는 TV를 본 적이 없었습니다.'

Now find the mistake in the next sentence.

이제 다음 문장에서 틀린 부분을 찾아보세요.

‘Reggie had it be to Mexico before he went to Peru.’

'레지는 페루로 가기 전에 멕시코로 가곤 했어요.'

Well, we have the subject here and for the negative, ‘hadn't’ is correct.

글쎄요, 여기에 주제가 있고 부정에 대해서는 '않았다'가 맞습니다.

However, we need the past participle of the verb ‘be’.

그러나 동사 'be'의 과거 분사가 필요합니다.

So the correct answer is,

그래서 정답은

‘Reggie hadn't been to Mexico before he went to Peru.’

'레지는 페루에 가기 전에 멕시코에 가본 적이 없었다'이다.

And finally, ‘Sally and Jan or they had do their job.’

그리고 마지막으로, 'Sally와 Jan 또는 그들은 그들의 일을 했습니다.'

Hmm.

Remember, we need the past participle.

We don't say do.

Remember, we start with the subject and then ‘had’.

So I'm going to add that here,

then we need the past participle of the verb ‘be’.

And that is ‘been’.

The next sentence says,

It's a little bit longer so it might take you a while.

Can you find the mistake?

Well, we have the subject and ‘had’, but check this out.

글쎄요, 우리는 주어와 'had'를 가지고 있습니다.

There are two past participles here.

여기에는 과거분사가 두 개 있습니다.

We need to get rid of one of them.

우리는 그 중 하나를 제거해야 합니다.

We can take out this verb and say, ‘They had known each other for ten years

before they had their first fight.’

The next sentence says, ‘I have played soccer for many years before I scored my first goal.’

This sentence doesn't look wrong at first.

But remember, in the past perfect tense, we need to say ‘had’.
