English now back to the lesson let's start with  a couple of words we use to talk about jobs in  

general the words mean about the same thing as  job occupation and profession your occupation  

or profession is what job you have I follow the  profession of teaching from the word profession  

we get an adjective professional which means  something connected with a profession or in a  

more general sense professional means behavior  which is competent reliable and respectful in  

my professional opinion as a doctor I think you  should get your injury treated right away our next  

word is commute which means the travel you have to  make between where you live and where you work my  

morning commute takes about 30 minutes that means  it takes 30 minutes to get from my home to my work  

place from this word we also get the noun commuter  which means people who have to travel to work most  

of the time people are commuters because they  don't usually live and work in the same building  

the next word is shift a shift is a period of  time in which people are scheduled to work in  

the United States the traditional first shift  is sometimes called a nine-to-five shift because  

people often were scheduled to work from 9:00 in  the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon so you can  

call that a nine-to-five shift or first shift the  second shift or swing shift within run from about  

4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon until midnight  and then the third shift sometimes called the  

graveyard shift because it's at night when it's  dark outside that runs from midnight to 8:00  

a.m. if you work longer than your shift meaning  longer than you were scheduled to work we call  

that overtime overtime is when you work more hours  than you were scheduled to work in some countries  

and in certain situations people who work overtime  might get paid extra money for their extra hours  

for example at one job I got time and a half pay  for any overtime meaning for each overtime hour  

that I worked I was paid as if I had worked for an  hour and a half not bad huh once you've worked in  

a job for a while you might want to make more  money when your employer increases the amount  

they pay you this is called getting a raise or  in British style English it could be called a  

rise I got a raise this year or I got a rise in  salary they are paying me an extra $300 a month  

now that's a good raise what kind of job do you  have do you have a full-time job do you have a  

part-time job a full-time job is a job in which  the employee works a minimum number of hours that  

number is set by the employer for example many  jobs in the u.s. define a full-time job as one  

in which the employee works 36 to 40 hours each  week a part-time job is a job in which the does  

not have to work a minimum of hours so someone who  works a nine-to-five shift each week as an office  

worker that's a full-time job someone who works  two days a week as a waiter in a restaurant has a  

part-time job sometimes there are big differences  between a full-time job and a part-time job for  

example someone with a full-time job is usually  paid a set salary which is the same no matter how  

many hours they work unless sometimes if they  work overtime someone with a part-time job is  

usually paid an hourly salary or hourly wage so  they can make more money the more hours they work  

so let's review your occupation or profession is  the kind of job you have your commute is your trip  

from home to work and then back again after work  is over the shift is the time in which you are  

scheduled to work and if you work longer than  your shift you are working overtime if you're  

good at your job and stay long enough you might  get a raise or rise which is an increase in your  

salary and the job you work is usually either full  time or part-time depending on how many hours you
