Billionaire English! Learn to Talk about the Rich and Famous!

So let me explain something

before we start this English lesson.

I am not a billionaire.

Wow, that's a lot of zeros.

I'm not a multi-millionaire.

I'm not a millionaire.

I'm just Bob.

But I do watch a lot of television

and I do watch a lot of movies

and when I watch some TV shows,

and some movies there are billionaires and multi-millionaires.

Sometimes there are rich people.

There are very wealthy people.

So in this English lesson,

I thought I would teach you some English words and phrases

that you would use to talk about those kinds of people,

the people who are billionaires, multi-millionaires,

and millionaires.

(upbeat music)

So let's start by talking about

where a wealthy person might live.

One of the places where a wealthy person might live

is in a penthouse.

A penthouse is an apartment

located on the very top floor of an apartment building.

It's usually way bigger than all of the other apartments

and a lot more expensive as well.

And it's just a great place to live,

I guess, if you have lots of money.

You probably have a great view of the city around you

and you have a great space to live with lots of privacy.

Another place where a rich person might live

is in a mansion.

A mansion is just a really, really big house.

This mansion is enormous.

I'm not sure how long it takes to clean every room

in that mansion.

It's simply really, really big.

This person also has some very nice cars as well,

but I'll talk about those in a little while.

And if I turn, you'll see there's also a a helicopter here.

So anyways, a mansion is simply a really, really big house.

So the piece of property I'm standing on

is right on the lake,

so we would call it lakefront property.

If that was an ocean,

we would call this oceanfront property.

And wealthy people love to buy pieces of land like this

so that they can build things like this.

Because this is a lake, we would call this a lakehouse.

So whoever owns that house

decided that they wanted to live right on the lake.

So when they look out the back window of their house,

they have this beautiful view of the water.

So it's a beautiful day out here by the lake.

Actually, I really like the sun hitting the water

right there. That's pretty cool.

Anyways, I didn't

come here to look at the sun.

I came here to point

and say that a few hundred kilometers that way

or maybe more, there are islands.

And if you were wealthy enough, you could buy one.

You could own a private island.

A private island is an island where only you live.

It's private.

It's just you that lives there.

You probably have a beautiful house on the private island,

but I'm not even sure what an island would cost.

Probably an enormous amount of money.

So there's a number of different kinds of vehicles

that a wealthy or rich person might drive

if they do drive themselves.

And one of those would be a sports car.

You might have a nice Corvette

or you might have a really, really nice orange McLaren,

like this one down here.

That is a very cool car.

I really like the color.

Or you might drive a Ferrari.

A sports car is a car that's designed to go fast.

It's designed to be as fast as possible.

This is a pretty nice sports car right here.

The other kind of car that they might drive

is called a luxury car.

A luxury car is designed to be comfortable.

So they might drive either a sports car

because they want to go fast

or a luxury car because they want to be comfortable.

Both types of car, though, are very, very expensive.

So normally when we talk about toys,

we're talking about kids,

but adults can also have toys and they look more like this.

So if you were to say, oh, that guy has a lot of toys,

it means that maybe he has a motorcycle,

maybe he has a jet ski, maybe he has something

like this old car on this side of the street.

So not just for kids.

If you say that someone has a lot of toys,

it means they have a lot of fun things.

Now, of course,

the ultimate way to travel would be by private jet.

A private jet is a jet that you own

that you can use to go wherever you want, whenever you want.

If I had a private jet,

I could just decide to go to Paris, France in a few hours,

jump on my private jet and I would be there in no time.

So the ultimate way to travel if you have the money

is to own a private jet

and go wherever you want, whenever you want.

Another common thing to own

if you have a lot of disposable income, by the way,

disposable income refers to when you have extra money.

After you've paid for all your living expenses,

you have more money and you don't know what to do with it.

We would call it disposable income.

But another thing that you might buy

if you had a lot of money

is you might buy a boat or you might buy a yacht.

So you might buy a boat like one of these nice boats.

These are very, very big boats in my opinion.

Or you might buy a yacht.

Sorry, I can't show you a yacht.

I don't think there's enough wealthy people

that live close to me.

This marina doesn't have any yachts,

but it does have some really big boats.

When I go places, I drive my trusty old minivan.

But if I was a wealthy person,

I would probably have a driver.

I probably wouldn't drive myself.

A driver is someone who drives your vehicle for you

and you get to ride in the back.

When they come to pick you up in the morning,

they open the door and they say, "Please get in, sir.

Where would you like to go?"

So I'm going to keep driving my own van,

but if I was wealthy, I could hire a driver.

When I work out, I come to the gym by myself.

I design my own workout plan

and then I come and I lift weights.

A wealthy person, though, might have a personal trainer.

Come on, Bob, three more times.

You can do it.

Okay. One, two, three.

A personal trainer would design the workout plan for you

so you wouldn't have to think about it yourself.

So if I was wealthy, I could hire a personal trainer.

A rich person might also hire a personal chef

to make their meals for them.

Their personal chef is someone who will make them breakfast,

make them lunch, make them dinner,

make anything that they want to eat,

even some really cool snacks.

So a wealthy person might have enough money

that they don't want to cook themselves

and they might hire a personal chef.

So if you have lots of money, you have to keep it somewhere

and you shouldn't keep it at home under your bed

or in a safe.

You should probably put it in a bank.

Now, this is true for normal people like us,

as well as millionaires and billionaires,

but millionaires and billionaires might use something

called an investment bank.

An investment bank allows you to invest your money.

It allows you to buy stocks, it allows you to buy bonds,

and it allows you to earn a return on that investment.

So if you have lots of money,

you should keep it safe in a bank.

If you want to make more money with your money,

you should use an investment bank.

So another thing that someone might do with their money

is buy an investment property.

An investment property would be something like

these stores on this street.

You might buy these stores, you might own the building,

and then rent the building out to someone else.

I'm sure that many of these stores on this street

are owned by wealthy people and they probably rent them out.

They've probably bought them as investment properties.
