Lesson 105 👩‍🏫 Basic English with Jennifer - SHOULD for advice

Hi everyone. I'm Jennifer from English with Jennifer. We're going to

Okay. Do you remember the word "fault"? Fault.

If i say it's my fault, then it's my mistake.

I'm wrong. I'm sorry. It's my fault. My fault. I'm sorry.

Right. Um, so right now, I'll show you some pictures There are

accidents, and it's all my fault. Okay? And you can help me and you can

give me advice. All right? Advice

is information to help me. Right? Information because you care.

You want to help me, so, for example, if i say,

"Ah! I broke all the eggs. I wasn't paying attention.

I was rushing. I dropped all the eggs, and I broke them. Your advice?

Is it good to rush? Not always. So, you're going to help me, and I want

you to give me advice with "should." SHOULD is a nice word

to help people. Right? SHOULD + another verb. You can do

"should," or you can do the negative "should not" and the contraction becomes

"shouldn't." Should. Shouldn't. Shouldn't.

You shouldn't talk on the phone and you shouldn't text.

Text when you're....

when you're driving. You shouldn't text when you're driving. Yeah. We can laugh,

emphasis, to be strong, we can say "never." You should

never text. You should never text when you're driving.

SHOULD to give advice. Giving advice is telling people what we think is a

good idea. You should pay attention. You should be

more careful.

Notice how we use SHOULD + the base verb.

Look at these sentences. Do you see any mistakes?

Don't use the infinitive after "should." Let's take out "to." You should take care

of yourself. You should exercise more.

How do we form the negative?

We use "not." You should not stay up late. You should not eat junk food.

In everyday English, especially conversation,

we use the contraction, the short form. You shouldn't stay up late. You shouldn't

eat junk food. You can practice more with Flavia and Andreia.

So, let's give more advice. I'll tell you all my problems.

Okay? And you can tell me advice. I'm so tired.

What's your advice?

You shouldn't work a lot. Okay. Yeah. You should work less.

Um, my stomach hurts.

You shouldn't...so you shouldn't

One mistake that happens with a word like SHOULD

is we do SHOULD with a verb: should go, should talk.

Don't use the "to." Not "should to go out." Should go out. You should go out.

You should turn on the TV. Or you should read a book. Right?

Can you give me more advice? I miss my old friends from high school.

I live in Massachusetts, and they live in Pennsylvania.

It's far away. What should I do?

Some possible answers: You should call them.

You should stay in touch. You should connect through social media.

Here's another problem. I love chocolate cake,

but sometimes after I eat it, my stomach hurts.

What should I do?

You might say, "Jennifer, you should eat just a little."

"You shouldn't eat a lot. You shouldn't eat it often."

Here's one more problem. Sometimes my neck hurts.

What should I do?

Some possible ideas: You should buy a better pillow.

You should do some exercises for your neck.

You should stand up straight.

When you have problems, do you talk about them?

Do you ask for advice? Listen as Andreia and Flavia share some problems

and give some advice.

Okay, so I told you all my problems. I'm tired, my stomach hurts, my throat hurts,

I'm stressed. You gave me advice. Okay? Now we'll tell
