My name's Sarah and I'm one of your new English teachers here on go natural English today

that TED talk presenters use

so if you feel like your English is kind of boring or

You feel like you're using the same words over and over again

This video is for you. Our first phrase today is to seize the moment

When you seize the moment you take advantage of life's opportunities

Whenever and wherever they present themselves, it's the opposite of hesitating or doubting yourself

letting

Opportunities pass you by you may also hear the phrase seize the day which pretty much means the same thing

Just go for it. Just do it. You have this time

Use it make it work. Try it out take risks grab these opportunities and create your own

Opportunities in this moment or in this day our second phrases to step up and do something

When you step up and do something, it means you're taking action

You're taking initiative to make a change to make something happen

the leaders of the world

They step up and do things they look around and see everyone else

who's not doing those things and

They are very courageous. They say I will do it

I want to do it there needs to be a change

For example, we need to step up and do something about all this plastic in the ocean

You may hear this phrase used in a presentation like a TED talk

You might hear it in a debate when there's two different opinions

Maybe one side feels that one action needs to happen, but the other side

Disagrees, they think another action it needs to happen

Another common idiom that comes to my mind with this phrase is to step up to the plate

This is a common idiom in American English that comes from baseball

We actually have a lot of idioms in English

From baseball it's just a popular sport. So we use them a lot and our speaking as well

So if you step up to the plate

Think about having a baseball bat in your hand and you go to hit the ball

It's like you're taking on that challenge

You're saying I know the ball is going to come at me and I'm going to hit it

So when someone steps up to the plate?

They're saying I can do this. I have the confidence. I believe I can and

I'm going to try our third phrase today is to reinvent the wheel

If you reinvent the wheel you are

Wasting your time doing something that's already been

Done the wheel was invented

A very very very long time ago. It was one of humanity's

first inventions, so we would not waste our time trying to do it again, right so

this phrase is used when you just want to tell someone to

Just not waste their time trying to do something that's already been

Perfected maybe do something else instead or do something in a new and creative?

kind of way maybe adding to

That idea or doing it just a little differently with your own unique twist

our fourth phrase today is to be intrigued if you're intrigued by a

Person or thing. It means that you are curious about that person or thing

You want to learn more or research more about that?

some common expressions we use with this word are

I'm

intrigued or

You might hear someone say that's intriguing

It's very similar to using the word interesting so I might say hmm. That's interesting

Very very similar. However

when we say that something is

Intriguing we mean it in a very positive way. So we really do want to learn more

We are really curious about it

When we use the phrase, that's interesting

Sometimes it depends on the situation

You might look at that as a positive statement or it could be negative

for example if I said

Lauren was late to work today and

My friend or someone else said hmm, that's interesting

That's kind of seen as negative. It's kind of like saying that strange or different

So we would never say that's intriguing. That would be a little too positive

So you can see they're similar, but they are a little different so

thinker if you're a forward thinker it means that you're always

Thinking about the future you are planning for

What will happen next?

this is a

wonderful phrase to use in an interview or you might hear it in an interview if

Someone asks you what are some of your strengths you might say

Well, I'm a forward thinker forward thinkers are very creative

They're often very

successful as well

They can predict what the future might be or they can kind of foresee

This is a wonderful phrase to practice and feel comfortable using so

when you go all-in on something it means that you give

100% of your time and energy and support to a person or a cause

You are doing it all you're going all-in

This is a common phrase we use in

Groups where you might be in a meeting or you're working on a project with other people you might say I'm all-in

Like I am one of the whole I am contributing my part to this whole group

Someone might ask you

Are you?

Or are you all in like are you part of this team? Are you a hundred percent?

Do you want to give to this cause for example, I might say I decided this year

2019 I'm gonna go all in and

create my first YouTube channel, or you might say I'm going to go all in and

Become fluent in English. I'm going to learn many phrases and expressions and

Meet other English speakers and travel and everything we do to improve our English, right?

Our seventh phrase today is to set out to do something when you set out to do something

It means that you have a goal something you want to accomplish something that you want to

do

so for example today I

set out to make a youtube video for go natural English and

Upload it for you all today

I think of this word in powered it means that you are strong and

Confident in the choices that you make in your life

That you feel like you can control your life and you can claim your rights as yours

TED talks are empowering because they make us feel like we can change the world one person at a time

Tell us about it in the comments our 9th phrase today is to think outside the box

when we think outs of the box

We think in a new and different way about something. So if you think of a box as someone's mind

The average person's mind when we think outside of the box. We're thinking more creatively

We're doing something a little different than how the group does it to think outside

The box is a phrase. That is a common cliche. So it is overused a lot

It's important to know what this phrase means you'll hear it. Yes, you can use it but just be aware that

Sometimes it's used a little too much and our last phrase our tenth phrase for this video today is to shift gears

Or to switch gears. This means to suddenly change the topic we use this a lot

During meetings or just when you're with a group of people or giving a presentation

Even you might say that we're going to switch gears now

We're going to change the focus from one thing to a different thing
