Today, we're going to look at 10 adjectives, and again, this is to help you on your writing,
3
18619
6711
00:25
speaking, listening, and reading sections of the IELTS and TOEFL. So, basically, every
4
25330
5179
00:30
single section; vocabulary is important for every single section, obviously.
5
30509
5401
00:35
So, the first word we have is: "aware". Now, again, "aware" is an adjective which means
6
35949
6411
00:42
that you are conscious of something or that you have knowledge of something. So, for example:
7
42360
7101
00:49
"I was not aware of that fact." I didn't have knowledge of that before. So, for example:
8
49520
6861
00:56
I was not aware that the red panda was an actual animal. If you don't know that, look
9
56436
6384
01:02
up: "red panda" on Google image search and you'll see a red panda. It happens. They're...
10
62820
5710
01:08
It's true.
11
68530
1320
01:09
The next word is: "crucial". So something that is "crucial" is vital or very important.
12
69850
7358
01:17
Think of it as essential, almost. So: "Pronunciation is a crucial part of language." It's a very
13
77263
8587
01:25
important, vital, essential part, component or aspect of learning language.
14
85869
6721
01:32
The next word we have is: "flexible". So, if you are "flexible" or something is "flexible",
15
92590
6180
01:38
it is able to be shaped, meaning it's not rigid. Like this would be not flexible; inflexible.
16
98770
7000
01:46
You know, I can't really bend this very much. So, for example: "Employers want employees
17
106890
6750
01:53
who are flexible." So, if you work for a company, your boss probably likes it if you're able
18
113640
5799
01:59
to work a variety of hours and you can do different types of jobs. So you have many
19
119439
6040
02:05
talents and you're able to, you know, move and bend, depending on the needs of the company.
20
125479
7000
02:12
The next word is: "obvious". If something is "obvious" - you might be familiar with
21
132890
4510
02:17
this word - it's clear and easy to see. So: "It is obvious that a large population increases
22
137400
6740
02:24
traffic." So, in a city like Toronto, or Hong Kong, or any type of large metropolis or cosmopolitan
23
144140
7753
02:31
area, you have large populations and those large populations cause more traffic because
24
151930
6670
02:38
you have more people - more cars. So it's obvious that large populations increase traffic.
25
158600
6880
02:45
Next, we have the word: "prohibited". If something is "prohibited", it's not allowed, it's forbidden.
26
165917
6483
02:52
So, for example: "Smoking is prohibited in most restaurants." It means that you can't
27
172400
7725
03:00
do it. It's not allowed in those restaurants.
28
180130
2360
03:02
Okay, guys, let's look at five more words.
29
182490
3250
03:05
Okay, so the next word is: "relevant". Now, if something is relevant, it is connected
30
185740
6360
03:12
to the current situation or the current issue we are discussing. Another word for "relevant"
31
192100
6870
03:18
is: "pertinent". The example we have on the board is: "Your question is not relevant to
32
198970
6450
03:25
this discussion." So, for example: if I am talking about global warming and you ask me
33
205420
5800
03:31
a question about clowns or make-up, that's not relevant to the thing that we are discussing.
34
211220
7000
03:38
The next adjective is: "reliable". "Reliable" means able to be predicted or dependable;
35
218262
7228
03:45
something you can count on. The sentence we have on the board is: "Everyone wants a reliable
36
225547
6893
03:52
source of income." A reliable source of income means money from your job that you know is
37
232440
8070
04:00
going to come, you know, at a dependable pace; so every two weeks, you know you will receive
38
240520
6420
04:06
a certain amount of money from your job. So everyone wants a reliable source of money,
39
246940
6160
04:13
an income from their job.
40
253100
2340
04:15
The next word is: "secure". You might know the word: "security" which is the noun form.
41
255440
5829
04:21
Here, we're looking at the adjective which means safe or protected from harm. So: "My
42
261269
6171
04:27
city is secure." We don't say: "My city is security." Remember: an adjective is a word
43
267440
7230
04:34
that talks about the quality of something or it describes it in some way. So you're
44
274680
5490
04:40
describing your city. In this situation, you say: "My city is secure." Not "security".
45
280170
6320
04:46
My city has security, it is secure.
46
286490
4400
04:50
The next adjective is: "significant". So, if something is "significant", it's of consequence;
47
290890
7000
04:57
it is important. So, for example: "Landing on the moon is one of man's most significant
48
297916
8479
05:06
achievements." An achievement that has had a tremendous consequence, basically, on our
49
306440
6630
05:13
world today and the development of the space program in general.
50
313070
4745
05:17
And finally, we have the word: "visible". And you might be familiar with this word.
51
317831
4859
05:22
It just means able to be seen. So: "There are numerous visible problems here." Whether
52
322690
6480
05:29
you're talking about a company, or a city, or a country, or a place - just means able
53
329170
7163
05:36
to be seen; clearly able to be seen.
54
336380
2780
05:39
