English Vocabulary & Slang to talk about AGE: retro, dated, antique, old school

Hey guys, I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on... Sorry, I can't

read that. I'm getting old. Okay, let me put my glasses on. Oh, okay, age, vocabulary,

and slang. Okay, that's better. So, in English, we have many ways to talk about things that

are old. Usually, we talk about objects or people when we're talking about age. I guess

ideas can be old as well. So, today, I will teach you some synonyms for the word old,

as well as some slang and some common vocabulary that people use. So, for example, my computer,

this is true, I have a laptop, and it is six years old. Now, for a computer to be six years

old today means that it's time to buy a new one. Unfortunately, I don't have the money

for a new computer right now, so I will have to keep using my old computer. So, my computer

is, it's old, right? My computer is old. What are some other ways to say old? I can say

my computer is ancient. Ancient, meaning thousands of years old, right? It's very, very dramatic,

a bit of a slang expression. Okay, my computer is an antique. Okay, something that is an

antique is very old. Usually, it's an object from like the 1800s or early 1900s. People

collect antiques, and you can go to an antique shop to buy old things. Okay, now, think about

these big, giant creatures that died millions and millions of years ago, and those creatures

are very, very old. They are called dinosaurs. So, if I say my computer is a dinosaur, that

means it is incredibly old. It is a dinosaur. All right, I can also say, I'm going to give

you two expressions that are similar, closely related. My computer is dated, is dated, right?

You see the word date, something that is dated. It's not current. It's not recent. It was,

you know, good yesterday, but it's not good today. Now, instead of saying dated, we can

also say out of date. It is out of date. So, if you have something that is out of date,

again, it's not current. It's not new. It's not recent. Two more expressions. These are

a little bit different, and they don't exactly mean the same thing as this, but they are

in the same family of expressions. I'm going to say old school. Maybe you have heard this,

or you've seen the movie with Will Ferrell. Okay, if I say my computer is old school,

it's old school. The term old school generally means traditional. For example, your parents

can be old school. So, if your parents are old school, they're traditional, not in a

positive way. Also, I can say my computer is retro. So, again, if something is retro,

it was in fashion in the past. It's not in fashion today. Some people like retro, though.

You can have retro clothing, or retro video games. So, if I play Super Mario Bros. 1 or

Donkey Kong on my Atari, those are retro games, old games that were cool back then, are still

cool today. I think retro is a cool fashion today.
