Learn English in the BATHROOM (75 Words You Need to Know)

We all use the bathroom on a daily basis, but can you confidently talk

about what you are doing in English?

Well, that's what this lesson is all about.

I'll cover all the verbs and nouns that you need to describe your daily routine.

First things first.

Most importantly, we need to sit on the throne.

We call this the toilet or the loo.

Now to sit on the toilet and do your business, you need to lift the lid, and

then you would take down your trousers and your underwear and sit on the seat.

Now, of course, if you are a man and you are not going to sit down.

You are going to have a standup wee then you'll lift the toilet seat.

This part is the seat.

You lift that and you expose the rim of the toilet, but you're going

to we into the toilet bowl when you've finished doing your business.

Whether that's having a wee into the bowl.

Sitting on the seat and doing your business that

way, you will clean yourself.

So, you'll use toilet roll.

Also, we call this toilet paper or tissue, and it sits on the toilet roll holder.

So, you use toilet paper to wipe.

So, when you've finished on the toilet, you wipe yourself.

To clean yourself.

You may, if you have access to one, also use a douche to

wash, spray, or clean yourself.

Then you'll need to dry yourself with the tissue, and when you've finished all

that, you put down the lid and you flush.

Now, don't be surprised if you hear a Brit saying.

Flush the chain instead of flush the toilet.

This is because in the old days our toilets had a cistern that was high

up that would hold the water and there was a pull chain on the side.

So, there was a handle on a chain that you would pull in order to flush the toilet.

So, the phrase would be, flush the toilet.

But you might hear a Brit saying, flush the chain.

Did you flush the chain?

Anyway?

Don't use flush the chain.

Just use, flush the toilet.

But don't be surprised if you hear it.

So, the verbs we use for toileting is to go to the toilet or use the toilet.

You might even say nip or pop to the toilet.

If you want to go quickly, like if you are leaving the house and

you just need a wee, say sorry.

Can I just nip to the loo?

Can I just pop to your toilet?

Is that okay?

If you feel embarrassed using the words toilet or loo then you might

simply use the word bathroom.

And maybe you don't want to use the toilet specifically.

Maybe you just want to use other facilities like the basin to wash your

hands, in which case you say, "Can I just use the bathroom please?" After

we've finished on the toilet, once we've done our business, the next

thing we need to do is wash our hands.

So, here we have our basin, also known as a sink, and this is where we shall

wash our hands or clean our hands.

So, the sink has a plug.

And a tap.

This one is a mixer tap, so you can control whether the flow is

hot or cold or somewhere in between.

But it's not unusual in the UK to see two taps, one for hot and one for cold.

And we also have the important ingredient, the soap.

We can also call this hand wash.

So, I dispense some soap onto my hands.

I turn on the tap, very noisy, and I rinse my hands, give them a good

clean to get them nice and clean.

And I turn off the tap.

And now I need to dry my hands on the hand towel.

So, here I can dry my hands on the hand towel that is hanging

currently on the radiator.

You might even call this a towel rail, a heated towel rail.

The hand towel sometimes is placed on the hook on the door, so we hang

the hand towel on the door sometimes, and now my hands are nice and dry.

While I'm talking about hands, sometimes we need to clip our nails,

in which case we'd use nail clippers.

Or if you need to trim your beard, then you'd use a beard trimmer.

If your hair is dirty, then you'll want to wash your hair.

First you'll wet it, then you'll add shampoo, rub it in

to clean your hair and scalp.

You'll then rinse the hair to wash away all the shampoo and the dirt,

and then you might add conditioner.

Conditioner makes your hair nice and soft and manageable.

So, you put conditioner in, you leave it for a minute, and then

you rinse the conditioner away.

Then you have nice clean hair.

Obviously, you'll need to dry it.

You might need to blow dry it, which is when you use a hair dryer, and then

all that's left is to style the hair.

Do something to make it look fabulous.

If you like having a bath, the first thing you'll do is put the plug in

and that's to block the plug hole.

So you put the plug in and you run the bath.

If you hear, draw a bath, know that that is a very old-fashioned verb.

We tend to use run a bath.

so, you run the bath.

You may add.

Some salts or some bubble bath if you like to have bubbles.

And then when it's ready, turn off the tap and jump in.

So you get in the bath and soak When you've finished, you empty

the bath by taking out the plug.

And then you'll need to dry off using a big towel.

I don't want to get water on the floor, so I also need to make sure

that I've put down a bath mat.

When you are ready to clean your entire body, you may choose to have

a shower or to have a bath so we can use, have a shower or have a bath.

Or you can say, take a shower and take a bath.

can also use bathe as a verb to bathe if you're having a bath or to shower

if you are going to have a shower.

Many showers in the UK are over the bathtub because there's not much space.

Now there are two different types of showers that you'll see in the uk.

This is a fixed shower, sometimes also called a rain shower.

And then we have a handheld shower which you can hold.

Do you prefer a shower or do you prefer a bath?

One very important thing to do is to brush your teeth morning and night.

Now, you may have an electric toothbrush.

Or a manual toothbrush.

So an electric toothbrush, an a manual toothbrush, doesn't have any power.

Well, first we wet our toothbrush and then we apply toothpaste.

So we squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube, onto the toothbrush,

and then we brush our teeth.

Along with brushing, you should also floss.

So, to floss your teeth, you'll need floss.

I use floss already on a holder like this to make it easier.

I also use these inter-dental picks that help to brush between my teeth.

You may also decide to use mouthwash, in which case you rinse with mouthwash.

I don't recommend it because actually it's very bad for your gut health, but

many people use it so the verbs are to rinse with mouthwash and then spit.

If you are wearing makeup, then you will need to put on your makeup.

You can also apply your makeup.

If you are wearing makeup at the end of the day, you will need to remove

your makeup or take off your makeup.

I use these little bamboo pads and makeup remover.

This one is micellar water.

I use that to do the bulk of the work to remove most of my makeup,

and then I use warm water and a flannel, also known as a face cloth.

And I use that to finish cleaning my face, washing my face, and

then I rinse with water, and finally I dry my face on a towel.

After that, my skin's quite dry, so I need to moisturise I use face cream, also known

as moisturiser or moisturising cream.

And I just put it on.

So, I put on my moisturiser and I rub it in.

If it's a sunny day, I'll also use additional sun cream, sun lotion.

Okay.

That is all the vocabulary that I think is essential for talking about.
