English Alphabet Pronunciation - Practical ABC Lesson

Smashed it! Does saying the alphabet in English  

make you nervous? No problem. Today I’m going  to share some tips and tricks that I use to  

help my students say the alphabet correctly. My  name’s Anna and this is English Like a Native. 

First off, let’s go through all the sounds in  alphabetical order. I’m going to show you the  

letter and the phonetic transcription for it. If  you’d like to know more about the phonetics then

Repeat after me. A

Z Now, let’s just say the vowels. 

A, E, I, O, U. A, E, I, O, U. 

That’s it! Well done! Now let’s practise using some common  

words that contain the same sounds. For example. 

A. Day. A. B. Bean. B. Like the ones  

Jack has in the children’s story! Magic beans. C. Like at the end of the word ‘mercy’. 

“I’m beggin’ you for mercy.  Why don’t you release me?” 

C. Next up, D. Demon. D. 

E. Sea. E. “Oh I do like to be beside the  

seaside” E. 

F. Like at the beginning of the word ‘effort’. F. 

G. Like at the beginning of the word ‘genie’. G. 

I always liked the genie in Aladdin  best. Who’s your favourite genie? 

H. Like the middle sound in  the name Rachel, ‘aitch’. 

I. Eye. This one’s an easy one! I. J. Like the precious stone ‘jade’. J. 

K. Okay. K. L.  

Elevator. Going up! L. M. Empty. 

“How no, my cup is empty.  Time to make another tea!” M. 

N. Like in the word ‘energy’. N. O. This one’s like ‘phone’. O. 

P. This one is exactly the  same as the vegetable, ‘pea’. 

Q. This letter is also a word ‘queue’. It’s the  line that you wait in. The spelling is a bit  

difficult, isn’t it? Q. R.  

R. This is the sound a pirate makes. “Arr maties.” S. Can you find the S in this mess? S. 

T. Oh look! It’s what I’ve  filled my cup up with! Tea! 

U. We want you! Just like the famous poster!  

That’s U! Or also a ewe. V. Like the planet Venus. V. 

W. This one doesn’t have a word with the sound  in it, but it’s simply two ewes together. W. 

X. Daleks always use this letter.  “Exterminate. Exterminate.” 

Y. Why? The famous three-year-old philosopher’s  favourite question. “Why? Why? Why?” 

Z. This letter rhymes with ‘bed’. /zed/, but  in America they say /ziː/, rhyming with me. Z. 

Now let’s test your memory. We will work through  those letters again but this time I want you to  

say each letter first. I will prompt you and give  you a few seconds before giving you the answer.

Z. Well  

done. Let’s make it a little bit  harder. I’ll show you some letters  

not in alphabetical order. You will have  a few seconds to say the letter out loud.

Ok, let’s practise taking dictation. You’re  going to need a piece of paper and a pen. 

I will say the letter and I  want you to write it. Ready?

Now, let’s really have some fun. Can you do  this eye test? Read aloud the letters from  

the top line all the way to the bottom.  Pause the video if you need more time. 

Now speed test yourself. You might want  to pause the video and time yourself  

saying the alphabet as quickly as you can. This  is just for fun. If you want to share your time,
