English Addict ( Quick Fix 7 ) Monday 11th October 2021- Live Chat from England with Mr Duncan

there it is the landscape live from england and  as you can see it is a lovely day today we have a  

nice day here in england and you might be able to  see in the distance there is a little just a small  

amount of autumn color you can see some of the  trees are now starting to turn as we head into  

autumn and this year something very strange  has happened this year we have had a very late  

autumn and by that i mean the trees have started  to turn or change color much later than usual  

anyway here we are we are back together again  yes we are all here because we love the english  

language we do i do and i have a feeling that  you do as well yes this is english addict  

a little bit of extra with my quick fix

you okay i hope so are you happy i hope you are  feeling happy today it is bright and sunny here  

i don't know why what have i done  to deserve such lovely weather today  

i do not know but it's nice it looks it looks  very autumnal i like that word by the way  

autumnal if we describe it as autumnal it  means it looks like autumn and by that i mean  

the colors we often think of autumn as being  a very colorful season especially when all  

of the leaves on the trees start to change  color so it is happening here very slowly  

much later than usual and the reason for  that is well we are having mild weather at  

the moment it's lovely and today is no exception  i talk about the english language by the way for  

those wondering who is this strange man talking  to me on my device my name is duncan i talk about  

the english language i like english very much  you might even say that i am an english addict  

and i have a feeling you might be as well i've  been doing this on youtube for a very long time  

how long hi i hear you asking hello did you ask  me mr duncan how long have you been doing this for  

ah i can hear you saying that now oh  very interesting i've been doing this  

for nearly 15 years that's why i  have a big number 15 on my head  

and i am celebrating my landmark anniversary  this year at the end of october and that's what  

i'm doing and that's the reason why i am here  with some extra live streams during this month  

so besides sunday i will also be with you  from monday to friday during october just  

so you know so now you are aware of the  situation monday to friday with you live  

from 2 p.m uk time and of course i am also  with you with my normal my usual live stream  

did you see it yesterday there was a lot going on  yesterday we were talking about so many different  

subjects we were talking about eating of course  we were talking about rats we were talking about  

the dentist we were talking about the reason why  there is a shortage of turkeys in this country and  

lots of other things as well so yesterday if you  missed it you can watch yesterday's live stream  

all over again and yes mr steve was with  us yesterday don't forget also a big change

here today yes we have made it all the way to  the start of a new week a fresh beginning and  

a week hopefully full of endless  possibilities yes it's monday

a new week i know that some people don't like  mondays they they hate them for various reasons

i'm not sure if i have a favourite day of the week  i i'm never quite sure i know when i was younger  

i used to hate sundays isn't that strange i  never really liked sundays because sometimes  

they would be quite boring sometimes my friends  would be away or maybe they were somewhere else  

with their family and so i i had no one to  play with i had i had no one to play with  

and i had nothing really to do so i used to lie on  my bed and listen to the radio so the radio quite  

often would be on in my bedroom i used to listen  to music all the time when i was younger but on  

sundays i would always feel slightly down because  i knew that the next day i would be back at school  

so i always found sundays to be a little  depressing and especially on sunday night  

i would i would feel my stomach going  over because i really didn't want to go  

to school the next day i hated going to school it  caused me so much anxiety and stress as a child  

i can't begin to tell you so sunday used  to be yes a little bit depressing monday  

probably worse but at least after monday  everything seemed all right so as soon  

as monday came and went the rest of the week  seemed okay but i always hated sunday because  

of that apprehension i like that word by the  way apprehension i don't like the feeling of it  

but i do like the word you feel nervous about  something that is coming your way maybe an  

event that is coming in the future you feel  apprehension or you feel apprehensive which is  

how you feel you feel concerned or worried  about what will happen in the future

so we are here and we have the  live chat as well oh hello live

it's a lovely day it feels like autumn is  definitely coming and in the back garden  

we have a live camera outside in the  garden at the back as well there it is  

you might even see mr steve going by in  a moment coming back from his little walk  

so there it is the view at the moment in  the garden it doesn't look very autumnal  

at the back however at the front of the house it  looks very autumnal you can see clearly that some  

of the leaves on the trees in the distance  are now starting to change colour it does feel  

as if autumn is on its way definitely

time i'm quite enjoying my new toothbrush i have  to be honest it's quite good fun the only strange  

thing about my toothbrush is you can actually  connect it to your phone through bluetooth

i don't know what it achieves so i'm just  wondering if if i can just put my toothbrush  

in my mouth because it is powered by  electricity and maybe i can just control

teeth because i went to the dentist last week and  i have to be honest with you i do feel much better  

this morning when i clean my teeth it seemed  it seemed much easier to do and also afterwards  

they felt very clean very nice and i think they  look better even though someone yesterday someone  

said mr steve your your teeth look yellow i think  the reason for that might be my camera as well  

so sometimes things that are white don't appear  to be white on camera we call it colour balance  

so sometimes your colour balance or white balance  can make certain things appear a different colour  

so that's the reason why my teeth might look a  little bit yellow but they don't in real life they

is something we were going to do yesterday  but of course mr steve was talking so much

we actually ran out of time yesterday so i thought  today we would have a look at words within words  

you can use words or put words or place words  within other words sometimes you can use more  

than one word so maybe two words can make one word  so we will be looking at that in a few moments as  

the lovely did you see the pigeons fly by there  are lots of pigeons flying around today i don't  

know why they seem all very excited they seem  excited by something i don't know what it is

we haven't had any more earthquakes since last  friday the day when we had the big earthquake  

that's good that's good news i'm glad to hear  that not such good news nearer to home with  

the volcano which appears to be getting worse  and worse every day on the island of la palma

that i was going to do yesterday  but i didn't have time unfortunately  

so it is possible to have words within words quite  often we will refer to these words as compound  

words so quite often you can use two words or  sometimes more than two words to make a new word  

sometimes you can mix the meanings of  words together to create a new word  

there are many ways of creating compound words so  i thought we would have a look at some interesting  

examples of words within words so quite often  we call these compound words types of words  

that use other words together so they become  one new word a good example would be this one  

in stead instead now this word is quite  interesting because it derives from a sentence  

so you might do something in someone else's stead  you do it in their stead which means you are doing  

it in their place so instead of them doing it you  are taking their place you do it in their stead  

in their place so instead is a combination of in  which means to be placed and stead which means to  

actually be standing or in that position  so you are in another person's place you  

are there instead instead of another person you  are in another person's place so i quite like that  

one because it it also gives you a little story as  to how that word was created so it actually comes  

from a phrase to say that you will replace another  person or maybe another person can't do something  

so you will stand in there stead you will do it  instead and that is why we have that word instead  

in place of instead of one thing doing  something another thing comes along  

and takes its place you you do it or someone else  does it instead of you or you do it instead of  

them i like that word here is another one oh this  is a word that is probably used a lot these days

uproar now this is a pretty good compound word  we are putting two words together an up and raw  

uproar so this really does describe quite  vividly what it is naming chaos outrage  

uproar quite often when people become  angry about a certain subject or maybe  

if a person has said something that lots of people  disagree with you might say that there is an  

uproar uproar means chaos or we  can also use it to name outrage  

which is something we were talking about a few  days ago so it is possible to have an uproar  

it means that you have gone from peace silence  to chaos and outrage so this describes that  

moment where people become angry or when chaos  begins there is an uproar a very good word

what might the uproar be about well there are  lots of uproars taking place at the moment some  

people might say there are too many too many  to talk about oh okay then here's a good one  

something that is omnipresent so  omni is all it covers everything  

so when we say that something is omni it means all  everything is included so if you are omnipresent  

it means you are everywhere or something  is everywhere if lots of people are doing  

a certain thing maybe there is a certain  fashion that is going around at the moment  

maybe lots of people are watching or talking about  the squid games which by the way i haven't seen  

i haven't i know nothing about it all i know is  that it is quite violent but i don't know anything  

about it but lots of people are writing reviews  and talking about it you might even say that all  

of those reviews and comments are omnipresent  they seem to be everywhere something that is  

omnipresent is something that is everywhere  so omni means all present means in  

a place omnipresent everywhere you could also  use the word omni to describe an animal that eats  

vegetables and also meat we can say that they are  an omnivore omnivore if someone or something maybe  

a type of animal is an omnivore it means that  it will eat vegetables and also meet as well

here's another one ah this is a simple one but i  think it's still a good example of a compound word  

snowstorm snowstorm something we  are definitely not having today  

is a snowstorm we are having the opposite quite  the opposite in fact snowstorm is a blizzard wind  

snow the snow is blowing the snow is falling very  fast and heavy perhaps in a few weeks from now  

we will have a blizzard as we head into autumn and  then after that we have winter so so i don't know  

at the moment what will happen this winter  sometimes we have something called a long  

range forecast when we are told what the weather  might be like over the next two or three months  

but at the moment no one is saying anything  about what this winter will be like

hello sandra oh hello mr duncan that word is very  interesting do you mean omnipresent yes it is  

something that is everywhere some people say  that i sometimes appear to be omnipresent  

on the internet not sure how true that is  snowstorm blizzard so again we are using two basic  

words snow and storm the occurrence of a blizzard  or heavy snow when the weather becomes violent  

during the winter months you might get a  blizzard oh this is another one interesting  

some people say that i am like this i don't  know what they mean to be honest head strong  

again we have two words mixed together they've  been joined to form another word headstrong  

a person who is headstrong can be described as  stubborn or determined a person who does not  

change their mind easily or maybe they know their  own mind that they find it very hard to change  

their mind or their opinions or maybe if they have  a plan something they want to do in the future  

something they are determined to do and succeed  in you might say that that person is headstrong  

headstrong do you know anyone who is headstrong  a person who might be very determined  

determined or maybe sometimes they  can be a little bit stubborn in fact  

here's one some people say that my  youtube career can be described as this

going nowhere thank you nowhere nowhere man he's a  real nowhere man living in his nowhere land making  

all his nowhere plans for nobody the beatles  i believe nowhere we are using two words  

no so that would appear to be a negative  word where place so we often think of a place  

where we are talking about where someone is or  where someone is going so that means you do have  

a direction you do have a direction that you are  going in where are you going where have you been  

you've been somewhere and now you're returning  or maybe you are going somewhere well this word  

means there is nowhere you are going  nowhere or maybe you have nowhere to live  

basically we are saying no place there is no place  you are going nowhere you are going to no place  

you are staying where you are you have no plans to  travel are you going on your holiday this year no  

i'm going nowhere i'm going no place a  person who is homeless maybe they have  

a very rough time and they  have to sleep on the street  

they have nowhere to live they have nowhere  to sleep no place so again another one

has their head inside a book they they are always  reading or studying they are always studious  

a person who is studious we can describe them as  a bookworm i love that so it almost appears as if  

that person is living inside the book because  their their head is always inside the book  

as they read although nowadays perhaps people  will have their head in front of a tablet  

device or their phone or their computer monitor so  maybe maybe bookworm is a little bit out of date  

maybe people don't use that anymore but  bookworm is a person who is studious  

they are always learning they always  seem to be learning something new

nowhere should be used in a positive  sentence well if you are pleased that you are  

not going anywhere you might say i've  decided to stay in tonight i'm going nowhere

so you can use that in a positive way  if you are happy about your situation  

you are going nowhere and that is because  you don't want to go anywhere so you can  

use it in a positive way as well shirin says  what about phone worm i like that or text worm

tablet worm what about an apple worm that's a  good one because because it might actually be an  

apple that you are eating that has a worm inside  or a person who is always looking at their ipad

an apple worm i like that one that's a  good one so a bookworm is a person who  

is always studying they are a person who often  reads maybe they wear glasses perhaps a person  

will just assume or guess that that person is a  bookworm because they wear glasses it does happen  

you can be sometimes mistaken for  intelligent if you have glasses  

it happens to me all the time  oh i like this word supernatural

oh i like that one supernatural something  that is super natural well quite often we use  

super in a word to show that something is  not normal or maybe something that is better  

or more than it normally is so for example i  suppose we can say supermarket when you think of  

a supermarket it is a place where you buy things  but quite often the the shop will be huge it's a  

big shop full of lots of things to buy quite often  there is food and other things as well quite often  

you can go to the supermarket and and there is not  just food but other things as well household items  

i went to a supermarket once and i got lost inside  it it was so huge i think it was one of those big  

tesco department stores they have food televisions  furniture all sorts of stuff they are huge  

shops they are almost like department stores  on one floor they sell everything so i suppose  

supermarket is a good one so instead of it being  just a normal market where things are sold it is  

a supermarket it is much larger than it normally  is so that's why we say supernatural something  

that is more than natural something that is  outside our understanding of the real world ghosts

spirits the other side supernatural so things  that are supernatural can also be described  

as paranormal something paranormal is supernatural  maybe in the night you are in bed trying to sleep  

and then suddenly you hear  the sound of a creaking door

it might be something supernatural

another one shall we have another one  okay we have two more and then i'm going

billboard billboard i'm sure you know the meaning  of this it is a great compound of two words  

bill which is a piece of paper maybe a  bill can be something that is sent to you  

to show how much you have to pay for  a certain service also a bill can be  

something that is put up on display such as a  poster so a billboard is a poster sign a sign  

that is put up and on top of it or in front of you  in front of it you will put posters so a billboard  

so this is this once again is a good  example of a compound word i like this one

billboards of course nowadays a  lot of billboards are electronic  

so instead of having paper with something  printed on it quite often you will see electronic  

screens displaying lots of different things so  over the years billboards have become become more  

noticeable and of course you  can put lots of different images  

on an electronic notice board or billboard  so over here we just call them posters  

or advertising posters so in the uk we often  call them advertising posters we don't often  

use the word billboard that is more often used  in american english although we do use it a lot  

of american english words or things that we see as  american english are also used in british english

billboard a sign normally advertising something  

promoting something and finally oh i like  this one i think this one sometimes describes  

well i know some people who are very much  this particular word they are i think so  

spend thrift a person who is a spend  thrift this is describing a type of person  

who often spends their money or maybe they waste  their money on things they buy things that they  

don't need they buy things and then a few weeks  later they stop using them or they throw them away  

they waste their money a person who is a  compulsive shopper can also be described  

as a spend thrift they can't control their  spending habits spend well of course spend  

is to spend your money you give your money to the  shopkeeper because you are buying something you  

spend your money you have a lot of money  in your hand and then you spend it all and  

then you have no money thrift again a spend  thrift is a person who spends their money  

they do it quickly they do it  fast they can't control themselves

they are some good examples of compound words as  i like to say words within words sometimes you can  

find maybe one two or sometimes three words inside  one word and that is what we call a compound word  

and they are common in english they they  are you can find them all over the place

you might say bulletin board well a bulletin board  is normally smaller it's normally a thing that you  

can use very easily they are normally small maybe  you find them in a shop maybe there are things  

being advertised on the board the bulletin board  

so a bulletin of course is just news or  information so that is slightly different

can a billboard be on a highway?  yes quite often not so much here  

but certainly in the united states you will  often see very large billboards some of them  

are very creative they they really put a lot of  time and effort into their billboards sometimes  

they they almost make them seem like a real thing  but of course nowadays because of electronics  

you can do anything really when you think  about it so you can make your billboard  

or your advertising poster or another  word we can use is hoarding an advertising  

hoarding a flat surface that something is on  normally to advertise a product or service
