not like yesterday if you remember  yesterday the weather was atrocious  

we had some awful weather but today  everything is looking rather nice and  

dare i say sunny and pleasant hello everyone here  we go again yes it is english addict quick fix

or perhaps you've never heard of me ever in your  life imagine that imagine going through your life  

up to this point and never hearing of me can  i just say your life will never be the same  

again so we are here again i talk about english i  love the english language you might even say that  

i am an english addict and yes your eyes do not  deceive you i am now coming to you live right now  

we are here with you and we are doing some special  lessons some special live lessons with my super  

duper live streams during the month of october  so i think now is a good time to remind you  

that i will be with you during october from  monday to friday from 2pm uk time every day  

during this special month why is it special i will  tell you in a moment have some patience please  

just calm down so during october i will be with  you from monday to friday from 2 p.m uk time and  

of course i am with you at the weekend on sunday  at my usual time which is also 2 p.m uk time i  

think it is a very easy thing to remember 2 p.m uk  time is when i'm with you here so that's it put it  

inside your head and lock it away and never forget  it 2 pm uk time is when i'm here with you you  

see i should have had a little bit of echo at the  back there 2 p.m uk time is when i'm here with you

that's nice yes we have made it all  the way to the middle of the week

yes it is wednesday and it  is the sixth day of october  

so and this is also my fourth is it my fourth it  feels like it must be my fourth special quick fix  

so this is just a short live stream not a long one  it won't be two hours long it is only going to be  

around about 40 maybe 45 minutes and then you can  carry on with your own business oh by the way you  

might notice here above my head or next to my head  you will see there is an anagram it is a sentence  

that i often use when i'm talking about english  so there is today's anagram if you think you know  

what it is if you can decipher oh i like that word  i don't think i've ever used the word decipher  

before ever on my live streams if you can decipher  or unravel this anagram and give me the answer

it seems like an innocent  word a word that seems to

to find out that the word over is amazing  it's a super duper fun and fantastic word

to go now because i have to treat a patient and  then louis mendes said i have to go now because  

i'm going to the dentist i have an appointment  with the dentist so i was wondering if louis  

was actually going to see claudia for some dental  treatment i wasn't sure but it seemed like a  

moment that might have been happening talking  of which i am going to the dentist on friday oh

i don't like the dentist i i don't like going  for the treatment i'm sure dentists are lovely  

people i'm sure they are but i don't actually like  going for treatment anything that goes in my mouth  

that i'm not sure of or anything that might go  into my mouth which causes pain i don't like  

to be honest so yes everyone is going to the  dentist this week including me but my appointment  

is on friday which reminds me i've just  remembered i might be a little bit late on friday  

for my live stream because i'm going to the  dentist so at around about midday i will be  

at the dentist but of course i have to be here  in my studio at two o'clock 2 pm uk time for  

my live stream so don't be surprised if i'm a  little bit late on friday for my live stream

that i mentioned yesterday florence and the  machine i was amazed to find out that they didn't  

start having success until 2007. now we don't  know why i always assumed that they were around  

earlier in the early 2000s but they weren't and of  course they had a they had a quite a few big hits  

during that time in fact they're still going  now yesterday i wasn't sure if florence and  

the machine were still going but they are they  actually are still performing hello also to marwah

hello oyem nice to see you back also  today on wednesday i was looking out of  

the kitchen window this morning and i saw  something quite lovely you might remember  

maybe three or four months ago i showed you  a lovely picture of mr steve in the garden  

and you can see he is surrounded by flowers and  this particular type of flower is called a dahlia  

well this morning when i was looking outside  the kitchen window i noticed that there was  

one flower just one flower left and it i i think  this will be the last flower the final flower  

of 2021 there it is the final dahlia  flower of 2021 looking all sad and lonely  

outside the kitchen window so i couldn't  resist filming that this morning to show you  

and i suppose in maybe maybe three  weeks four weeks mr steve will prepare  

to to take the dahlia into the garage he will dig  the flower up out of the soil and then he will put  

it into storage during the winter months so it  doesn't get damaged talking of getting damaged  

we had a lot of strong wind yesterday and look  what happened to my poor heron my lovely little  

heron got blown over in the wind yesterday was so  strong we had some very violent storms yesterday  

and and my little heron that mr steve bought  for me was blown over not very nice is it really  

looking rather sad but you will be  pleased to hear that i have repaired  

my heron and now he is standing up looking all  happy and proud again so there it is now a live  

view but yesterday my poor little heron got blown  over in the wind but it it it would appear to be  

undamaged it fell over ah you see so that is one  use of the word over when you lose your balance  

maybe you fall over you fall over you lose  your balance you become unstable something that  

is pushed over knocked over it falls over so there  is one use of the word over already next week  

something very special is happening for a very  very famous actor do you know what i'm talking  

about if you are a fan of science fiction like  i am well i remember growing up watching a lot  

of science fiction programs on television and one  particular show that i used to like watching was  

star trek the original star trek i used to watch  that i think it was always on thursday nights  

i don't know why but the bbc used to show  star trek and i think it was thursday night  

that they used to show it and the star of that  show william shatner is going into space next week  

which i think is amazing i think that is one of  those stories that comes along and it really does  

make you smile so i i thought it was amazing when  i when i read that yesterday i i had a big smile  

on my face so the guy william shatner famous actor  he used to play captain kirk in star trek boldly  

going where no man or woman has gone before but  he's going into space next week not only that  

but he will be the oldest person ever to have  gone into the upper atmosphere of planet earth  

so not quite into space he won't be going at  warp speed anywhere but he will be going above  

the earth and looking down and i think is it elon  musk i think it's elon musk it's one of his little  

rockets going up night into space so william  shatner who is now 90 is going up into space  

incredible i wonder how much that cost him i would  imagine it cost a lot of money to do that do you  

see i think it's probably hundreds of thousands  of dollars i think so but i can't wait to see that

yes well it gives me a chance to talk to you it  also gives you a chance to chat to me but also it  

gives all of you a chance to speak to each other  as well on the live chat so yes i love this i i'm

and at the end of this month i will be  celebrating my 15th anniversary a couple  

of days ago i was talking about communication  and i think i mentioned it yesterday as well so  

i thought today i would ask a quick question to  you do you mind is it okay if i ask a question

there are many ways of communicating with each  other people have many options many choices  

when it comes to communicating with other  people now i remember growing up many years ago  

before the internet yes i am that old i i  grew up in a time when there was no internet

i can't believe it now there  was no twitter no facebook

no chat roulette what no youtube no email so  that there weren't many ways of communicating  

with other people in fact you only had two choices  besides meeting in person so you could meet people  

face to face of course but the only other choices  you had was telephoning making a telephone call  

and writing a letter or sending a card that was it  there was no other way of communicating with other  

people however nowadays we have so many choices we  have so much choice when it comes to communicating  

with other people besides letters you can  still send a letter although i don't think  

anyone does that anymore does anyone still send  letters have you ever sent a letter recently  

i know i haven't and also telephone calls you  can speak to a person on the telephone but of  

course we have many other options as well so  how do you normally communicate with people  

other than meeting face to face so i know  you can actually meet people and talk to them  

and say hello oh good morning oh good morning  to you how is the weather today well the weather  

isn't very good but you should know that because  you're outside with me you should know that

how do you do it how do you generally  communicate with other people

no andrew don't worry i've only heard  of that thing i've never used it

so how do you normally communicate with  people besides meeting them face to face  

now i know what you're going to say  i'm sure you are thinking mr duncan

everyone had to stay at home they couldn't  meet face to face they couldn't meet in person

i was watching a very interesting report  the other night talking about social  

media and the way people communicate  with each other and that apparently

whatsapp has 3 billion users not 3  million 3 billion and there's only around  

billion on the planet so almost half of  the population of this planet use whatsapp  

i think that's amazing and incredible hello  to ikram oh i communicate with other people  

via social media especially facebook thank  you ikram yes i think facebook well some  

people say to me they say you shouldn't be  on facebook mr duncan because no one uses it  

anymore but i disagree i think lots  of people still use facebook maybe

people who are slightly older

maybe that's the reason why i still use it but  young people of course have have different tastes  

and different choices there is always  something new that comes along to replace  

the thing that they used before you know  what young people are like they are very  

fickle fickle i like that word if someone  is fickle it means they change their mind  

very quickly so they will do something for  a short time and then they will change their  

mind and they will do something else so  every every time something new comes along  

they will change their their mind  or they will change their behaviour  

depending on what is popular palmyra says these  days i often use facebook or my mobile phone  

do you ever talk on your phone so i don't think  people even communicate through their telephone by  

speaking anymore i think it's just so much easier  just to type a message just to send a text message  

or an sms so i don't think anyone really picks  up their telephone anymore and actually speaks  

in person so even that seems like too much trouble  now this morning i had to phone up the care home  

where my mum is staying at the moment and i had  to confirm my appointment on saturday to see her  

but it seemed very strange actually making  a phone call and talking to someone because  

normally i like to send text messages or  emails so it always feels strange to me  

maybe it's just me it always feels  feels strange when you pick up the  

telephone and actually speak to someone at  the other end it always feels very strange

luis mendes hello lewis i use facebook because  i am the same age as you mr duncan yes i think  

so i think facebook is something that is used a  lot by people who are mature like me mature yes  

that's what i like to say not old mature i like  that florence says i communicate with whatsapp  

and sometimes messenger but i saw that there  are a lot of applications that we can use for  

free yes i suppose during lockdown a lot of people  were using they were using communication through  

what were they using they were probably using  windows because they have their own messenger  

service there was what was the other one i  can't remember what it was called there was  

another one as well that lots of people were using  i didn't use it as you can tell oh i suppose face  

time if you have an iphone you would probably  use facetime and of course skype which is the one  

that i forgot just i forgot what it was called  how embarrassing many of my friends oh my ori  

says many of my friends use snapchat i can safely  say that i've never used snapchat i don't even  

know what it is i know it's been around for many  years but i don't know what it is or how to use it

zoom is another one ah yes now zoom is often  used by companies or by big businesses that  

want to allow their employees to communicate with  each other so i think yes yes that's a good one  

yeah zoom also palmyra sometimes i get requests  to be friends on facebook from unknown people  

then i often check if they are also english  addicts i'm sure that happens i get many friend  

requests on my facebook page i do i have around 15  000 followers on facebook which seems like a lot  

but there are other people who have even more than  that some have a million followers on social media  

hello new york in vietnam we often call by  messenger and zalo zalo which is a vietnamese app  

and you can text and also call and i suppose  the other good thing about that is you can do it  

for free it costs you nothing so i think that's  pretty good mr duncan we can communicate with you  

and friends through your channel yes i suppose  that is that is something i i briefly mentioned  

earlier but of course yes you you can communicate  right here now so we are all here together  

of course i have the advantage because i can  actually communicate on camera but of course  

you are all welcome to communicate with each other  on the live chat so that's why i love doing this  

it isn't just me talking to you but  it's also you having a chance to  

communicate with other people people you  would never meet in your life normally  

today we are looking at some interesting words  and phrases connected to what would appear to be a  

very simple word we are looking at uses of over i  know what you're thinking mr duncan that's a very  

simple word but you might be surprised to find  out how often it is used in other ways as well  

in its general use the word over is a  preposition relating to the position above  

so we often think of over as referring  to a position that is above something

where something is positioned whilst up in  the air in relation to what is on the ground  

we often use the word over

the airplane will go over your house the  airplane goes over your house the airplane  

went over your house so we are talking  here we are talking future tents there  

and then present tense and then past tense so  you can use over in all of those situations  

we can express this as over the top so when  something goes above you and especially if  

it's traveling in a certain direction we  can say something is going over the top

we flew over the top of the mountains  we flew over the top of the mountains  

so that means you are high up and the the  mountains were underneath you and quite often we  

we use that when we are moving at the same  time when you are going over something  

to cover something also uses over  for example put a white cloth  

over the table top so you put something over  another thing to cover something you put one thing  

over another so if you are covering something  sometimes we do it for safety sometimes we want  

to protect something that might be easily  damaged you will put something over the top  

to climb across something can be expressed  using the word over we will need to climb  

over the fence so to get over something  means you you have to go from one side  

to another climbing over something you might have  to go over a bridge you are crossing the river  

but you are also going over the  river and across or over the bridge  

to express the movement of something also uses  over as a preposition so the movement of something  

for example i will come over later to help you  i will come over later to help you that means i  

will go to you it is expressing that movement  from one place to another i will come over

authority it means you are going too far you have  stepped over the line you overstep you go too far

over balance as i mentioned earlier my poor  little heron in the garden unfortunately yesterday  

blew over in the wind it lost its balance so if  you lose your balance maybe you reach too far  

and you lose your balance you lose stability  we can say that you have over balanced

try again come on mr duncan you can do it

force or fake an action so if you over act imagine  going onto a stage and performing and you are over  

acting you overact oh my goodness what  am i supposed to do i am here all alone  

you overact you force or you fake an action  

overture now this is a very interesting word  because we we can use it in more than one way  

maybe a piece of music that is used at the start  of a performance can be described as an overture  

but also to offer something or approach or  suggest can also be described as an overture

overtone when we are in a room or a certain  situation maybe around you there is a certain  

atmosphere the way things feel around you we can  talk about the overtone the nuance which i like i  

think that is a super duper word nuance the nuance  of something or maybe what will happen because of  

that thing the implication so the mood the feeling  around you you might talk about the overtones  

a certain nuance or an implication in a certain  place or during a certain time overstate here's  

a good one people often overstate something  maybe they exaggerate they say something that  

is over the top they overstate they exaggerate  a person maybe is trying to get some sympathy  

for their illness but really there isn't very much  wrong with them they overstate their problem they  

exaggerate here's another one overhaul if you  overhaul something it means you fix or refurbish  

something maybe you have an old car that you've  been driving for many years and now it's starting  

to to break down and not work properly  so perhaps your car will have to be  

overhauled if you overhaul something it means  you fix or refurbish something here's another one

overreact now earlier we had over act but this one  is overreact an exaggerated response to something  

so if you overreact to something it means your  reaction is exaggerated you are making something  

seem worse than it really is you overreact oh  my goodness i can't believe it i can't believe  

this has happened and someone might say oh mr  duncan you really like to overreact to things  

if you overreact it means you have an  exaggerated response to something over the top  

something that is over the top means to  exaggerate one's action you do something that is  

over the top some people say that i when i'm  teaching or talking my body movements are over  

the top mr duncan when you are talking on your  live streams you move your body so much like this  

it is a little over the top it is slightly  exaggerated something that goes over and over  

something that repeats again and again  so to repeat something is to do something  

over and over over and over again and again  finally before i go you might say that two things  

overlap if two things overlap it means  they are related joined or maybe one thing  

covers another with no gap so overlap means one  thing is going over another one hand overlaps  

the other hand it goes over it overlaps there  is no gap in between and that is it of course  

there are many other uses of the word over for  example overtake if you overtake someone it means  

you go ahead of them maybe in a race two people  are running one person will overtake the other  

so there are actually many uses of the word  over and i'm sure there are many more as well
