you from the birthplace of the english language and this is day number nine of 28 days of

february how are you today

once again hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how are you today are you okay

i hope so here we are again yes we've made it to the second day of the week my name is

duncan i talk about the english language i'm doing something ever so special very special

during the month of february i am here with you for 28 days for the whole of this month

i am with you i was with you yesterday and i will be with you tomorrow as well oh my

goodness i am really spoiling you i really think i am if you spoil someone it means you

treat them too well maybe you give them everything they want everything they ask for you always

give someone what they want we often talk about parents spoiling their children have

you ever met a spoiled child a child who always gets everything they want and they are so

spoiled sometimes a child that is spoilt can start to take everything for granted they

just think oh i can have new toys i can have my money from my parents every week to buy

things you see so sometimes a child can be spoiled and maybe it is a bad thing who knows

anyway i'm duncan i talk about the english language i've been doing this forever such

a long time do you know how long well this year it will be my 15th year i'm not joking

a lot of people think i'm joking i'm not i started doing this way back in 2006 when i

was so young so innocent so

pure sorry about that i suppose the big question today must be when am i going to take my christmas

lights down yes you might not believe this but i still have my christmas lights on the

front of the house and my neighbours

every day they look at my lights and i know that they are thinking when is duncan going

to take his christmas lights down because they have been up for a very long time now

it isn't christmas anymore

it is true my christmas lights are still on the front of the house so these photographs

i took a few moments ago and yes you can see they are still there my lovely christmas lights

are still outside on the house although i'm not actually switching them on so so my lights

are not on at night because that would be very silly almost as silly as actually leaving

them up so i know yes i know it's february but my christmas lights are still on the front

of the house i will take them down honestly when the weather gets better i promise i will

take my christmas trees down my christmas lights down they will definitely be coming

down maybe when spring comes maybe when the warm weather comes i might decide to go up

onto the roof and take my christmas lights down isn't that nice i know there are some

people who who still have their christmas trees in their house they have decided to

celebrate christmas for the whole year i think it's nice actually i think it's a nice idea

to be honest so here we are yes we have made it to the second day of the week it's a lovely

day here in england we have snow all over the place yes it's tuesday

it is tuesday it's 28 days of february fab that means fabulous a fabulous time will be

had by myself and also hopefully you as well out there in youtube land would you like to

see my flowers these are my lovely flowers would you like to see them and they are still

alive they're still doing very well a beautiful gift that i received yesterday some lovely

flowers from my my loyal friends in canada aren't they lovely isn't that nice so these

were sent to me as a little get well gift for my mother and also to cheer me up as well

i know last week i was feeling a little bit unhappy because my mum is not very well but

these flowers have certainly made me feel a little bit more cheerful so thank you very

much once again for the for the lovely flowers absolutely lovely as i mentioned a few moments

ago we have a lot of snow falling at the moment we have a little snow here not much but in

the east of england and also in scotland they have had a lot of snow in fact some parts

of england and scotland are underneath lots of snow they have had heavy snow in the east

of england although we haven't had much here to be honest we've had little flurries of

snow but nothing too serious but there it is there is a photograph taken and you can

see on the screen the name of the storm so every time there is a storm we always give

it a name and this particular storm is called storm darcy and storm darcy has been causing

a lot of chaos in the east of england all sorts of problems because of the heavy snow

and the freezing cold temperatures so at the moment yes we are experiencing quite a lot

of heavy snow in the east of england as i mentioned earlier we don't have much here

here actually we don't have much here it is trying to snow at the moment so here is the

view outside the window right now as you can see there are some flakes of snow but we also

have sunshine which is very strange so not only do we have snow we have sunshine at the

same time you might be able to see in the distance the sun is actually shining across

the landscape so it is a very strange day today we are having some very unusual weather

sunshine and snow at the same time but there is no snow on the ground everything is clear

even though it is absolutely freezing cold minus six it is six degrees below zero today

and that is because of the very cold easterly wind we have this wind that is blowing in

from the east one of the coldest parts of the world is sending their cold air to us

so that's the reason why it's so chilly at the moment can i say a big hello to the live

chat yes we have the live chat up and running who was first today i wonder oh oh hello beatrice

you know what that almost deserves a fancy pants oh fancy pants

okay that's enough of that we can't have too much fun because we've only been on for a

two things we are talking about the subject of what is seen as right and what is seen

as wrong right and wrong is what we are talking about in around about 10 minutes from now

right wrong how do we express right and wrong in english there are many ways of looking

at this subject so not only from what is acceptable but also what is unacceptable something that

is done in the right way and something that is done in the wrong way we can also talk

about opinions as well you might say that right and wrong is subjective everyone has

their own feeling or opinion of what is right and what is wrong so that is what we're talking

about today we have a little bit of that coming up a little bit later on i think i will tell

you now definitely i will be with you tomorrow live now i know last week i showed you a video

last week but tomorrow wednesday i will be live tomorrow from 2pm uk time for those who

might get a little bit confused because last week i wasn't here on wednesday but today

anna asks why are there so many white vans in your area well one of the reasons why we

have so many white vans driving around on the road is because at this time of year well

certainly because it's winter fewer people are going out you see to do their shopping

so it's much easier to buy things on the internet and haven't have them delivered to your house

you see that's the reason why so there it is in the distance that's the reason why there

are so many white vans going around also i suppose because at this time of year oh did

you see the was that a tractor did you see the tractor then there was a tractor i saw

reason why there are so many vans driving around is because it is locked down of course

wondering what that road is that is actually the much wenlock road that is the main road

that comes into the place where i live and also it goes all the way to the town of shrewsbury

you see so it is a very big long busy road it's a very good place to spot your white

go by with its flashing lights i think that was actually a tractor but maybe one day we

could do a live stream and maybe one day during february we could actually have a live stream

where we just watched the traffic going by what do you think about them apples is that

they have purchased through the internet and then they are being delivered to people's

houses so there are many reasons why people drive white vans maybe they are delivering

problem is when it goes dark you won't be able to see the road you see because it will

we will just chat to each other and we can talk about the traffic that we see good idea

look at today's subject which is all about things that are right and things that are

seen as wrong so it is interesting when we think of right and wrong there are many ways

of expressing that particular thing those things are often seen in certain ways so the

things that you see as right and the things that you see as wrong are not always the same

perhaps one person sees something is right and another person might see it as wrong so

we often say that right and wrong can be subjective it is the way in which a person looks at that

thing so i think quite often right and wrong is not objective it is subjective which means

that you look at things in your own way the thing you see as being right might be different

from someone else you see so it can vary quite a lot right and wrong so when we talk about

right and wrong we often talk about things that are correct when we are talking about

things that are right we talk about things that are correct

things that are correct something that is correct is something that is seen as right

maybe if you are giving an answer to a question maybe it is something that you have to remember

and then later a person will ask you a question about it and they will say oh can you answer

the question and so you have to think and then you give your answer so your answer is

right it is correct something that is correct is right and then of course i suppose we can

look at the antonym the opposite incorrect so we often say something that is not right

something that is wrong is incorrect i'm very sorry but you gave me

an incorrect answer the answer was wrong it was incorrect an incorrect answer an answer

that is wrong

something that is accurate now this is an interesting word because you might not think

that it means right even though it does so you can use this particular word to show that

something is right it is accurate for example your watch so you might look at your watch

you might check to see what time it is however perhaps your time is not right perhaps the

time that your watch is showing you is not correct it is not right however this watch

is always right i can describe this watch as accurate this watch is always accurate

it always tells me the right time i always make sure that this watch is set correctly

it always tells me the right time so that is why i always manage to come on and do my

live stream precisely at two o'clock well okay for most of the time i do sometimes i'm

a little bit late i know i know what you're going to say mr duncan sometimes you are you

are not on time so an accurate thing is something that is right precise something that is accurate

so it is something also that can be trusted you see something that is accurate is something

you can rely on it is trustworthy so i can trust my watch to tell me the right time you

might also describe an exercise book or a reference book as accurate because the things

inside that book all of the facts are accurate they are right and then we have the opposite

once again yes i'm sure you know there is always an opposite to everything

inaccurate if something is inaccurate it means it is wrong it does not figure as being correct

for example maybe your watch is inaccurate it is not keeping good time it is inaccurate

it doesn't work properly you see so the time on your watch is not accurate it is incorrect

it is wrong

we can also use the word precise as well something that is very precise is accurate it is right

maybe if you give an answer and your answer is very clear we can say that your answer

is precise so the answer that is being given is clear precise and of course right as well

you might give yours give a precise answer maybe you need some precise details if you

are being precise about something you are telling someone maybe you want someone to

know where you are where your location is you must be precise you must be exact you

must be right so if you are giving your location quite often we will expect that person to

be precise they will give a precise answer or they will give you their precise location

the answer of course if you are unclear about where you are if the details or the answer

is not clear

it is imprecise something that is imprecise so it is the opposite we have precise which

is seen as right and imprecise which is seen as wrong the opposite something is imprecise

something that is accepted again very interesting so when you think of things that are right

things that are accepted generally in society there are things that are accepted and there

are things that are not accepted you see so maybe a certain type of behaviour is accepted

but then maybe another type of behaviour is not accepted so an accepted thing is acceptable

it is something that is accepted you don't disagree you have no problem with it because

you accept it and generally speaking also we will say that something is right once again

i suppose things that are accepted can be subjective once again and the opposite of

course is unaccepted unaccepted so maybe an idea or a suggestion or maybe something that

a person says maybe they have their own opinion about something you might say that that thing

is unaccepted unaccepted so we have something that is seen as right accepted and something

that is seen as wrong unaccepted it is unacceptable when we talk about laws we often talk about

things that are allowed so if something is allowed it means that you can do it it is

allowed so generally when we talk about law we often talk about things that are allowed

things that are forbidden are not allowed in law and of course as you go around the

world you might find that something that is forbidden in one place might not be forbidden

in another so as you travel around the world you might find that all of the laws all of

the things that are allowed and all the things that are forbidden can vary from place to

place you see

might say that something is lawful so this means something that you can do without being

that is allowed to happen so you might say that it is seen as being right it is okay

forbidden now i remember at school learning all about prohibition have you heard of that

in the united states there was a long period of time i believe it was during the 1920s

late 1920s that alcohol was forbidden forbidden you couldn't drink alcohol or produce alcohol

at all it was seen as something that was sinful so it was prohibited the only problem was

someone somewhere would always try to get around the law so even though alcohol was

forbidden there were people who were producing alcohol and selling alcohol in secret so just

because you ban something just because you prohibit something doesn't mean that it stops

not always so to prohibit something is to stop it or ban that thing it is not allowed

so you might say a good example would be here in england where there are many laws concerning

the use of drugs there are illegal drugs drugs that are prohibited you are not allowed to

use them you cannot use them in any way anna anna carmen lawful is that the same as out

of law well something that is lawful is allowed it is okay yes you will not be punished so

it is not out of law something that is lawful is okay it is seen as right it's okay you

will normally not be punished if you do something that is lawful

rosa says mr duncan you have a lot of smiles i do so every one of these smiles is for every

one of my fabulous days you see that's why that's why i'm doing it another another word

so we are looking at right and wrong today you might say that something is true so there

true true is often seen as positive so the thing that is right is the thing that is true

quite often when we're talking about facts things that actually happened things that

have been recorded as documents we can say that that thing is true maybe you read something

in the newspaper maybe you hear something on the radio or you see something reported

on the television you might believe that that thing is true or they will say this is true

it is real it is happening it is right and then we have the opposite and let's face it

we have heard a lot a lot about this you might have things that are false things that are

not true things that are not real true and false we often see them as something that

is right and something that is wrong you are right about that you are wrong about that

here's another one i want to move on quickly because we only have 10 minutes and then i

will be gone and then i will be back tomorrow it will go very fast don't worry something

that is seen as right can be agreeable something that is agreeable maybe something that makes

you feel relaxed pleasant happy can be the right thing oh i was sitting outside this

morning and i could feel the warm sunshine on my face it was very agreeable it was most

agreeable it was right it was a right thing it was a right moment something nice was happening

it was very agreeable a lovely moment of time was occurring

yes sometimes if a thing is forbidden it might become more desirable i think so yes that's

interesting a lot of people think that they believe sometimes that if you ban something

or if you prohibit something you can actually make it more attractive some people do believe

that maybe something that is forbidden can appear to be more attractive

perhaps perhaps not so something that is agreeable is something that you see as right or something

that you feel is good

as i mentioned something that is banned or barred now that's an interesting one i don't

know how often you you use that or if you hear that word used but we we more often say

banned so if something is banned it means it is not allowed it is prohibited you are

not allowed to do it but also we can have the word bard and this has a slightly different

connotation this has a slightly different use maybe if you are in a bar or a pub and

you start causing trouble the person who owns the pub or the bar or the restaurant they

might say i'm sorry you have to leave you have to leave and you can't come back you

are barred so if you bar someone it means you banned them you disallow them you will

not allow them to come in to your restaurant or your pub

you can be barred from entering a certain place

and then we have two basic words and these are words that you have probably heard of

before so when we talk of right and wrong we often talk about things that are legal

and illegal so we have things that are legal things that are allowed and then we have things

that are illegal things that are not allowed lawful unlawful right wrong so in law these

two words define what is right what is allowed and what is wrong what is not allowed and

i suppose we can't have right and wrong without talking about good and bad so things that

are seen as right might also be seen as good maybe a person who always does the right thing

a person who always behaves in the right way they always say the right words they always

do the right thing can often be seen as good a good person a good person they always try

to do the right thing and then of course we have wrong which is often associated with

bad a bad person a person who will often do things wrong they will do things that they

shouldn't do they will do things bad they will do things bad of course the word wrong

can also mean to do something without trying maybe you do something without paying attention

we had the word lawful earlier on you can also have the word unlawful so as i mentioned

earlier we had lawful which is allowed but also you can have the opposite word which

is unlawful lawful is right unlawful is wrong it is not allowed

sometimes especially these days there are people who will go against what is wrong so

something that they see as wrong something that they see as bad they will go against

that thing quite often in the form of a protest so quite often people will protest against

something that is wrong you go against what is wrong you protest against it

however if something is right you will go along with it you go along with something

that is right because it is acceptable it is seen as something that is allowed so you

go along with what is right quite often we will go against things that are wrong we will

go along with things that are right but once again it is worth mentioning that all of these

things are subjective

one person's right is another person's wrong

and finally we have one before we finish one more there is a right way there is a wrong

way and quite often you will do the right thing so let me explain the right way to do

something is the way it should be done maybe if you are trying to build some furniture

and you are following the instructions you must do it the right way there is a right

way to do something and maybe if you don't take care or maybe you don't pay attention

or you try to do it by yourself we might say that there is a wrong way to do it so there

is always a right way and a wrong way quite often when we talk about a person's conscience

or a person's morals we will often say that they should do the right thing if you do the

right thing then it means that you are doing what is honest what is seen as good we will

often think to ourselves yes i'm going to do the right thing maybe you have to admit

your guilt maybe you have to come forward and say that you did something wrong maybe

you have to speak to someone that you haven't spoken to for many years sometimes you have

to do the right thing the thing that is seen as moral the thing that is seen as right right
