How to Use Pronouns (Me, Myself and I) | Grammar Time!

Do you know the difference between I, me, my, mine and myself? This kind of reminds

me of a song. Me, Myself and I.

Sorry about that, anyway. Well today I'm going to take

you through all the personal pronouns and show you how to use them correctly. This is

perfect for anyone studying an exam like IELTS or FCE or if you just want to improve your

grammar. This is the lesson for you guys, so let's get going.

let's start with personal pronouns. We have subject and object. So let's go through the

subjects. I, you, he, she, it, we, they. We use these pronouns to talk about the subject

of the sentence. So for example 'I like cats'. Ok, I is the subject I like cats. We also

have object pronouns and we use these to describe the object of a sentence. Object pronouns

are Me, you, him, her, it, us, them. So let's put this into a sentence 'I like cats but

cats don't like me.' Now the cats are the subject and me, I'm the object. The cats don't

like me. 'We sent her some flowers for good luck'. So we is the subject and then her is

the object. So we sent her some flowers to say good luck. 'Where are my shoes?' 'I borrowed

them. I hope you don't mind.' So I is the subject and then borrowed them. Them is the

object, in this case, they are shoes. So I borrowed them. So we use object pronouns as

objects of the sentence and also after prepositions. 'I bought this for us.' So I is the subject

and as you can see the preposition is for and then you have the object pronoun us. There

can and then do the quiz. I'm going to test your knowledge on personal pronouns. Ok, let's

move on to possessive adjectives or determiners as they are also called. So we use these to

show that something belongs to someone or maybe someone is a family member or a friend.

So they are My, your, his, her, its, our, their. Now the pronunciation there of our

could be our or our. Our pen, our house, whatever it might be. Our or our both are acceptable

so for example 'Where's my pen?' The pen belongs to me so where's my pen? Where is your brother

living these days? So the brother is a part of your family so we are using the determiner

there your brother. Not my brother, your brother. Our apartment is on the tenth floor. So whose

apartment is it? It's our apartment, so yours and mine maybe or mine and my wife. So our

apartment is on the tenth floor, our apartment is on the tenth floor. 'Her dog is so cute'.

So whose dog? Her dog. So her dog is so cute. So as you can see, if something belongs to

someone then we are going to use the possessive adjective or determiner. Ok, let's move on

to possessive pronouns. Now these are used to replace nouns. Mine, yours his, hers, its,

ours, theirs. 'I can see your coat but where is mine.' Now what we are doing there, your

there is the possessive adjective or the determiner but where is mine. Mine is the possessive

pronoun, it's replacing my coat. So instead of saying 'I can see your coat but where is

my coat.' Instead of repeating myself and saying that noun again, I'm just going to

use the possessive pronoun. so 'where is mine?' My coat. 'Oh my phone is dead, can I borrow

yours?' My is the possessive adjective or determiner. My phone. But can I borrow yours?

I could say 'Can I borrow your phone?' I don't want to repeat myself again with a noun so

I'm just going to say 'Can I borrow yours?' the possessive pronoun. So another example

'They've got a lovely house but I prefer ours.' So I could have said 'but I prefer our house'

but i don't want to repeat myself with house again so I'll just say 'they've got a lovely

house but I prefer ours.' Alright and finally we're going to look at reflexive pronouns.

These are super useful, check it out. So we use reflexive pronouns as a direct object

when the object is the same subject as the verb. So let's look at these reflexive pronouns,

we've got myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.

'I hurt myself in the gym' So I am the subject, myself is the direct object and we are the

same thing. I and myself. Me, myself and I. We are the same thing so I did the action

and I also received the action. So we use myself. I hurt myself. No one else did it.

No one else did that action, it was me. I did it. Another example 'She's teaching herself

how to cook.' So she is the subject and the object is herself. No one else is teaching

her, she's doing it to herself. Now there are a couple of patterns you can follow here.

For example the word by. When we use the word by we can use a reflexive pronoun afterwards

to emphasise that someone is doing something on their own. For example 'I lived by myself

in Argentina' So I just want to express there that I did this thing alone. I lived in an

apartment with no one else just me so 'I lived by myself in Argentina.' And it was wonderful,

peace and quiet, perfect. If you are talking about a child you might say 'He can get dressed

by himself now.' If we really want to show emphasis we can put that reflexive pronoun

at the end of the sentence. So let's say you are building some IKEA furniture and you said

'We built it ourselves' You are putting the reflexive pronoun at the end there ourselves

just to show that you did it alone, you didn't need help. 'They paid for the wedding themselves.'

So again you want to show emphasis. They didn't get any help, they paid for it, they used

all their money to pay for the wedding. So 'they paid for the wedding themselves'. Alright
