Should Have: How to Use it & Example Sentences (English Grammar - PDF Available)

Hello. This is Jack from tofluency.com and in this video, I'm going to

answer a question about a specific modal verb, so here is the question:

Maria asks, "How do we use should have and what's the difference between this and

should?" Thank you your question.

Firstly we can you should have when we're giving recommendations or advice

for past actions. So, on your screen you can see a picture of a buffet and this is

a buffet at a party. Now, imagine that I went to the party but my friend didn't go - I

had a great time, so, I say to my friend, "You should have come to the party with

us, it was great." I'm giving this recommendation or this advice for past

actions - I'm telling my friends that he missed out on a great party - you should

have come to the party with us, it was great. We also use should have for regrets in

the past. Now, imagine that I say something very rude to one of my friends or I'm really

angry at one of my friends. But later, I regret it - I say, "Sorry, I shouldn't have

said that. We also use should have to speculate about events - so, we don't know

if something is true or not but we're guessing; we are speculating. So, I sent my

friend in invitation for a party and I say to my wife, "They should have got the

invitation by now." So, I haven't received a reply but I'm speculating and I say

"They should have got the invitation by now." Finally, I want to talk about the

difference between should and should have. So, we use should for present or

future actions and should have for past actions. On your screen, you can see a

picture of a hotel - my friend wants to book the hotel and i say to him

"You should book that hotel soon"because reservations go very quickly. He didn't

book the hotel and it is completely booked, and then I say to him, "See, you should

have booked that hotel."
