English Phrasal Verbs: Pick Up and Drop Off

Hey everyone, what is up? This is Chad from RealLife English and today I have another

very quick video lesson for you all teaching you how to use the verbs and phrasal verbs

So first let's look at the word pick. So pick can be used in many different ways, it can

be used to mean to choose or to select something.

Pick is also used for that little wooden object you use to pick your teeth. That object is

called a toothpick. Anyone who plays guitar will know that you need a pick to strum the

guitar. And the conjugation of pick being a regular verb is...

So like I have mentioned in some previous videos, often when we add an ED to a regular

verb it can take on a different sound, in this case it takes on the T sound.

And that is the phrasal verb today, to pick up, to pick something or someone up. So the

reason I put the something in the middle there was to show you that pick up is a separable

phrasal verb. You can use it either together or separate it and put the object in the middle.

So pick up can mean a couple of things. One thing can be to, if something falls onto the

ground you have to bend over to pick it up. Pick up is also used to say to go and collect

something or someone, for example I can say 'I have to go and pick my brother up from

school,' or, 'pick up my brother from school.' And that is why sometimes you will call that

utility vehicle a pick up truck because it was originally designed to pick things up

and put them in the tray in the back.

Ok so the next phrase is to drop something off, or drop someone off. Again let's look

at the word to drop, as a verb it's a regular verb, it takes on that same T sound...

I dropped him off at school. Ok so the phrasal verb is the opposite of to pick someone up,

to drop someone off, it means you leave them at their destination. Maybe if you are driving

them you can say I'm gonna drop him off at school. But drop can be used as a verb just

by itself, it means to for example, if I drop my pen it means that I let it fall down I

dropped my pen. Drop is also used as a noun, ahh maybe as a small unit of liquid like water

or maybe if you use eye drops or rain drops it's another way of using drops as a noun.

So they are the two phrasal verbs for today to pick up and drop off. Now I'm quickly going

to say them in a phrase trying to use a lot of connected speech. So the purpose of this

part of the lesson is to listen to what I'm saying and trying to mimic and imitate exactly

how I say it.

Alright ladies and gentlemen, that is another 2 phrasal verbs and also some pronunciation

practice trying to really copy those aspects of connected speech. Remember it's all about

training your mouth muscles, the more you do this the easier it gets. If you need to

go back and listen to that part again and again I definitely suggest you do that because

it's a great exercise for improving pronunciation.
