Simple Past Tense - Learn English Grammar

Today's English lesson, is grammar about the simple past.

The simple past is used to talk about a completed action,

in a time before now.

For example, what did you do yesterday?

I played basketball.

Watch Sarah and I.

(high-pitched voice) What did you do yesterday?

(deep, manly, voice) Uh, I walked my dog.

I talked to my friend, and I played basketball.

Regular simple past is formed like this,

subject, plus verb plus "ed". I played.

In the simple past, there are regular and irregular verbs.

Common, regular, past tense verbs. Verb, plus "ed".

Want, wanted. I wanted.

Look, looked, he looked.

Use, used, she used.

Work, worked, I worked.

Call, called, he called.

Try, tried, she tried.

Ask, asked, he asked.

Need, needed, I needed.

Help, helped, she helped.

Talk, talked, he talked.

Now you try.

There are three different ending sounds. T, D, and I.D.

T ending sound,

if the end of the word has a p, f, sh, ch, k, ending sound.

For example, hope, P ending sound, hoped.

Laugh, F ending sound, laughed.

Wash, sh ending sound, washed.

Watch, ch ending sound, watched.

Like, k ending sound, liked.

Use "id" ending sound if the end of the verb has a t,d

ending sound.

For example, need, needed.

Visit, visited.

End, ended.

Use d ending sound if the end of the verb

has any other ending sound except t,d,p,f,sh,ch,k.

For example: play, played.

Allow, allowed.

Beg, begged.

Show, showed.
