English vocabulary for talking about sport | Learn English with Cambridge

Hello, everyone, and welcome to another Learn English

with Cambridge video.

But this is a very special one, as the whole team is going to

join me to share some useful vocabulary for talking about

sport in English.

Before I begin, don’t forget to subscribe to

the channel for twice weekly videos on real world English.

So let's dive right in and learn the English words for

some specific types of sports.

Athletics.

This is the general name for a particular group of sports

in which people compete, including running,

jumping and throwing.

Gymnastics.

These are exercises and activities performed inside,

often using equipment such as bars and ropes,

intended to increase the body’s strength and the

ability to move and bend easily.

Tennis.

A game played between two or four people on a special

playing area that involves hitting a small ball on

a central net using a racket.

More types of sports you might hear over the summer are...

Weightlifting.

The activity of lifting heavy objects, either as

a sport or for exercise.

Diving.

The sport of jumping into water, especially with your head

and arms going in first, or, swimming underwater.

Fencing.

The sport of fighting with long, thin swords.

And now let's take a look at some of

the people involved in sports.

It's a person who is very good at sport or physical exercise,

especially one who competes in organised events.

It's a person who is in charge of a sport game,

and who makes certain that the rules are followed.

Oh no.

It's a person who watches an activity,

especially a sport event, without taking part.

Other people you might hear the names of when

talking about sports are...

Coach.

What are you doing, man?

Put that over there.

Now.

Someone whose job is to teach people to improve at a sport,

skill, or school subject.

Judge.

The person who officially decides who is the winner

of a competition.

Fan.

Someone who admires and supports a person, sport or sports team.

What about the places where sporting events take place?

Let's cover some key words for sporting locations.

Hey, Hong, where are you going dressing like that?

Oh, you don’t know?

Today is the final football match of the season.

I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Oh, how can I possibly forget that?

What’s the venue? Venue.

The place where a public event or meeting happens.

It's in the Central Stadium.

Stadium.

A large closed area of land with rows of

seats around the sides and often with no roof,

used for sports events and musical performances.

Oh, it's the place with some tracks circling the field?

Track.

A type of path or road, often in the shape of a ring,

that has been specially designed and built for sports events,

especially racing.

Yes, exactly.

You are very lucky today, I've got an extra ticket.

Where else might you take part in a sporting activity?

You can go to an arena, which is a large flat area

surrounded by seats used for sports or entertainment.

You can also go to a pitch, which is an area painted

with lines for playing specific sports,

especially football.

Or you can go to a ring, which is a special area

where people perform or compete.

Depending on which sport you're watching or playing,

the sports person or team will use different types

of equipment.

I’ll start with the word, bat.

It's a specially shaped piece of wood used for hitting

the ball in some games, like baseball, cricket,

rounders or table tennis.

Mouth guard.

It's a device that people who take part in some sports put

inside their mouths in order to protect their teeth and gums.

Ball.

It's any object in the shape of a sphere,

especially one used in various sports such as

tennis and football.

There are also terms like, net, which can either mean

a rectangular piece of material made from string,

used to separate the two sides in various sports, or,

the area surrounded by a piece of material made from string,

into which a ball or puck is put in order to score points

in various sports.

Racket.

An object used for hitting the ball in various sports,

consisting of a net fixed tightly to a round frame

with a long handle.

Helmet.

A strong, hard hat that covers and protects the head.

And, finally, I’ll tell you about three general words

you might use across sports.

Sportsmanship.

Its behaviour in sport that is fair and shows

respect to other players.

Rules.

Rules are an accepted principle or instruction that states

the way things are or should be done and tells you what you are

allowed or not allowed to do.

Trophy.

A prize, such as a gold or silver cup,

that is given to the winner of a competition or a race,

and often returned after a year to be given to the

winner of the competition in the following year.
