How to Use Auxiliary Verbs for Emphasis and Contrast 🔹 English Grammar

Auxiliary verbs are helping verbs. You know  them. Modal verbs are a group of auxiliary verbs:  

조동사는 조동사입니다. 넌 그들을 안다. 모달 동사는 보조 동사의 그룹입니다:

can, could, will, should, and so on. We use  the helping verb BE in progressive verb forms:  

can, could, will, should 등. 우리는 진행형 동사 형태로 조동사 BE를 사용합니다:

I am teaching. You are studying. We use the  helping verb HAVE in perfect verb forms.  

나는 가르치고 있습니다. 너는 공부 중이 야. 우리는 완료 동사 형태로 조동사 HAVE를 사용합니다.

We have studied together many times. We hadn't  talked about this use of auxiliary verbs.

Think of the helping verbs we use in questions...

and negative forms.

Auxiliary verbs can be used to create a  contrast if you need to clarify or emphasize  

조동사를 사용하여 대비를 만들 수 있습니다

a fact or an opinion. I've never lived in New  York, but I have visited the city many times.  

. 저는 뉴욕에 살아본 적이 없지만 뉴욕을 여러 번 방문했습니다.

I can't dance every kind of dance, but  I can do some basic ballroom steps.

모든 종류의 춤을 출 수는 없지만 기본적인 볼룸 스텝은 할 수 있습니다.

With the simple present and simple past, we use  the helping verbs DO, DOES, and DID. For example,  

단순 현재와 단순 과거에는 조동사 DO, DOES, DID를 사용합니다. 예를 들어,

I don't see my neighbors every day,  but I do see them throughout the week.  

이웃을 매일 보지는 않지만 일주일 내내 봅니다.

In writing, we can use italics for emphasis.  In speaking, we can use our voice. I do

see them throughout the week. What happens if the  idea is negative? We still use the auxiliary verb,

but the emphasis goes on "not."  I do not see them every day.

Victoria doesn't have a pet, but  I know she does love animals.

I don't have a car, but I do know how to drive.

Levi hasn't been to Asia, but  he has traveled to Europe.

Kelly hasn't been to South America,  but she did travel to Mexico last year.

Our teacher said she won't grade her homework,  but she will grade class participation.

Garrett said he's free tonight,  but he is working all day tomorrow.

We can use the existing helping verb. We don't  use the contraction. We use the full form,  

기존 조동사를 사용할 수 있습니다. 축약형을 사용하지 않습니다. 전체 형식을 사용한

and then through italics or our voice, we  emphasize the auxiliary verb: She will grade  

다음 이탤릭체나 음성을 통해 조동사를 강조합니다. She will grade

class participation. He is  working all day tomorrow.

class Partition. 그는 내일 하루 종일 일합니다.

I'm not sure I'll be able to see  my favorite singer perform live,  

내가 좋아하는 가수의 라이브 공연을 볼 수 있을지는 모르겠지만,

but if I ever do, it will be an event to treasure.

만약 보게 된다면 소중한 행사가 될 것이다.

Notice in that last example how we can use an  auxiliary verb not only for emphasis or contrast,  

마지막 예에서 조동사를 강조나 대조뿐만

but we can also use it to be concise. Ellipsis  is the practice of omitting unnecessary words  

아니라 간결하게 사용할 수 있는 방법에 주목하세요. 말줄임표는 이해하기 쉽기 때문에 불필요한 단어를 생략하는 관행입니다
