Master 12 Vocabulary Words to Move from B2 to C1

Having advanced vocabulary isn't about trying to  prove how smart you are. We need to expand our  

vocabulary to express our ideas more articulately.  For example, there's a difference between  

simply saying something and then mentioning,  announcing, or even confessing something. Right?

Accurate English and more sophisticated English is  

what you want as you move from B2 to C1,  that is, from intermediate to Advanced.

I'm Jennifer from English with Jennifer, and  in this lesson we'll practice 12 words you  

must know to progress to advanced English.  Let's start with six words at the B2 level.

One. The salesperson showed how the product  worked. What's another word for "show"?  

What's a verb that means you show how something  works or how something is done? Starts with a D.

demonstrate

This is a transitive verb, so remember to use an  object. Demonstrate what? Do you know the noun?

demonstration

Two. Although I smiled brightly, my  shaking hands showed how nervous I  

was. What's another word for "show"  in the sense that something might  

have been a secret or it may not have  been seen? This verb starts with an R.

reveal

"Reveal" takes an object.  Reveal what? What's the noun?

revelation

Three. The company will not hire a  candidate who is simply good enough.  

They're looking for someone with  true talent and amazing skills.  

What is a single word for "good  enough"? It starts with a-d...

adequate

This adjective means that something or  someone is acceptable for a purpose but  

not better than that. We can talk about  degrees: barely adequate, merely adequate,  

or the opposite -- more than adequate. Try  to learn common phrases with key vocabulary.

Four. We invested a great amount of time and  effort. What's another word for "great" or  

"large"? "Significant" would work here, but I'm  thinking of an adjective that starts with c-o-n.

considerable

This adjective is often used in  these phrases: considerable time,  

considerable effort, a considerable number  of. The adverb "considerably" is also used  

to emphasize a large amount or degree, as in  considerably older or considerably younger.

Five. Marina played an important role in  the project's success. What's another word  

for "important and necessary"? There's  an adjective that starts with a c...c-r

crucial

Note these common phrases: a crucial role,  a crucial moment, a crucial question,  

a crucial difference.

Six. I consider sleep to be very  important. It's an important  

thing. What noun refers to something  important? Starts with a p...p-r...

priority

It's true for me that sleep is a priority.  It's a high priority. It's one of my my main  

priorities. This is often a countable noun.  Another common phrase is "make something a  

priority." As an uncountable noun, I can give  priority to sleep. Sleeping has priority. Be  

sure you know what a word means and how  to use it. How do people use these words?

So, how did you do? Here are  the six words we practiced  

at the B2 level: demonstrate, reveal, adequate,  considerable, crucial, priority. Are you fully  

comfortable using them? Let's move on to  the second set of words at the C1 level.

Seven. A teacher's job is to  make learning possible. Do  

you know a verb that means "make  possible"? It starts with an F.

facilitate

This is a transitive verb. Teachers facilitate  learning. We make learning possible by helping.

Eight. We have a lot in common.  We have the same interests. What's  

an adjective that means the same?  Starts with an M, ends with an L.

mutual

"Mutual" implies that you share something  with someone. We can have mutual friends,  

mutual interests, mutual  respect. A common saying is,  

"The feeling is mutual." This means  we feel the same way about something.

Nine. All good things come to  an end. It's certain to happen.  

What adjective means "certain to happen and  you can't prevent it"? It starts with i-n...

inevitable

We say you can't avoid the inevitable. You can't  

prevent the inevitable. Someone may try  to delay the inevitable. What's the noun?

inevitability

Ten. At first, Ben wasn't quite willing  to join the game, but once he did,  

he enjoyed himself. How else  can we describe someone who's  

unwilling to do something? It's an  adjective that starts with r-e...

reluctant

Note how an infinitive often follows  this adjective. He was reluctant. He was  

reluctant to join. What's the adverb?

reluctantly

You may agree to do something  reluctantly. And the noun?

reluctance

Someone may show reluctance to do something.

Eleven. In American culture, we  have deodorant, air fresheners,  

and scented soaps because we have this  idea that we need to remove all odors.  

What's a synonym for "remove" or the  phrase "get rid of"? Starts with an E.

eliminate

This is a transitive verb.  Eliminate odors, eliminate  

waste. A certain change might eliminate  a possibility or the need for something.

Twelve. Your daily habits control the  degree of success you'll have. Do you  

know another word for "control  or influence"? Starts with a D.

determine

This is a transitive verb. Determine what?  We can also use "determine" in the passive  

voice. Our success is determined by our daily  habits. Maybe you know the related adjective:  

determined. This is about being ambitious, having  a strong desire, and not stopping. Maybe you're  

determined to reach level C2 in English.  If so, you have determination. You show  

determination to learn. It's helpful to learn a  word family: determine, determined, determination.

How did you do with that second set?  Be sure to make example sentences with  

any of the words you haven't been using.  These 12 words are used in speaking and in  

writing at the advanced level. They're  used professionally and academically.
