How often do you study English? Every day? Well, maybe it's not every day, but I hope

it's often. Let's practice answering the question 'how often?' You can study with my

students Flavia and Andreia.

Okay, ladies. Let's talk about not 'when,' but 'how often.'

Right? For example, you like walking with your dog. You take your dog for walks.

How often? Is that every day? On weekend. On the weekends. And if it's

Saturday, do you take a walk one time, two, times, three times? How many walks? One. One walk?

A long walk. Then minutes. Yes, yes. Okay. So I asked, "How often?" You say, "Well, on the weekend."

"Every weekend." On Saturdays and Sundays. Okay. I know you have cats. Right? I bet you hold

your cats. Yes? Yeah. And you hug your cats. Yes. How often? On the weekend? Every time. All the time.

So every day. Many times. Often. So, "How often?" I'm asking if it's always, never...so let's

think about those words. Always. I always hug my cats. All right? Every day could be

like...you feed your dog every day. Right? The dog needs to eat, but the opposite is

never. What about 'sometimes'? Is 'sometimes' like 'always' or 'never'? Where is 'sometimes'?

In the middle? In the middle. How about this word. 'Rarely.' Around here. Yes. Mm-hmm.

If I say 'often.' Where should it go? You think it's more like this?

No. Here. After. Yes. Somewhere. They're similar. Similar.

And note in American English, we can say 'often' with a T. Often. But often we have

no T. Often.

When I'm talking fast, I say, "Often."

I often play the piano. Often. Okay. How about 'usually'? Is it more like 'never' or

'always' or in the middle? Yeah, somewhere around here maybe. Often. Usually.

Somewhere around there. Yeah. Often...usually...similar. Because 'usually' is

similar to like 'every day.' Like usually. Right? What do you have...you probably have

similar words in Portuguese. Usually. Right? What is 'usually' in

Portuguese? It sounds like "usually." And 'often' is like 'frequently.' Do you have a word like that

in Portuguese? So it's similar. 'Often' is like 'frequently.' And 'usually' is...

Alright the opposite of 'often'? You can also say 'not often.' Not often, which is the same as 'rarely.' So you can say 'often' or 'not often.'

Rarely. Okay?

Repeat after me.

Are you often angry? Are you often angry? No. Good.

Are you never angry? Rarely. I'm rarely angry. I'm rarely angry.

I'm? I'm. I am. I'm.

I'm rarely angry. Actually, you can ask me, "Jennifer, are you often...?" Jennifer, are you often angry? When I drive, yes.

I'm happy, but when I drive, I'm often angry because I want to go fast. And I

get angry. I'm like, "Go!" I'm often angry. Are you often tired? Sometimes. Sometimes? Yeah. I can

get tired in the morning. Yeah. Can you ask Andreia? Are you often tired?

Usually. I am usually tired. Yeah. You need to sleep more. Okay.

I could ask, "Always?" Are you always busy? Always. Are you always busy?

Often. I'm often busy. Can you ask Andreia?

Are you often busy? I am often busy. You can ask me.

Are you often busy? I'm always busy.

I have children. I have a dog. I'm always busy.

But I'm usually happy. But in the car, I'm often angry, and in the morning, I'm

tired...every day. Actually, no. Often. Because on the weekend, I'm not tired.

Let's form questions.

How often do you study English?

How often do you exercise?

How often do you go to the library?

How often do you go grocery shopping?

Watch how I put the words. If I use I'm, I am, I'm, I take one of these words and a

feeling. Right? I'm often happy. Right? I'm usually busy. I'm...what could I say?

I'm never bored. Right? So with 'I am' or 'you are,' we have the subject and the verb:

I am, you are + how often + and the feeling. Right? I'm often happy. You're often happy.

But if we move to other verbs, not 'I am'... 'you are,' the verb to be. We switch to 'teach' or 'study.'

Then...I usually teach in the afternoon. I don't say 'teach usually,' but

'usually teach.' I usually teach in the afternoon, or I never teach late at night.

Right? So before the verb, we do 'how often.' With 'study.'

I asked the question 'how often.' How often do you study? When do you study English?

How often do you study English? Do you study on the weekend? No. No. Do you study

in the morning? Yes. Okay. So you can say... I often student in the morning.

Mm-hmm. Do you study in the afternoon? No. Do you study in the morning? Yes. Okay.

So? I am often study in the morning....Mm-hmm. Do you often study in the morning?

Or do you usually study in the morning? I am often study in the morning. I often

study -- not I am I often. Because now we have 'study.' I often study in the morning.

Mm-hmm. Do you study in the evening? I sometimes study in the evening. Mm-hmm.

Do you study on Monday? I often study on Monday. Or you can say, "I always study."

Do you always study on Monday? Yes. You can ask me questions about 'teach.'

So you first can say, "When do you teach?" Or "How often do you teach?" Ask me one

question. How often do you teach? I teach almost every day.

And you can ask me questions about, well, if I teach almost every day...

Can you think of a question? Are you often...? Do you often...? Do you often teach in the morning?

Not often. Not often. I sometimes teach in the morning.

I sometimes teach in the morning. Yes. Can you ask a question? How often do you teach in the evening?

I teach in the evening once a week. Once a week. I usually teach on Thursday, on Thursday evening.

Note with 'every day,' it usually goes at

the end. Okay? For example, do you study every day? Yes. Yes. Good. I study.. I study every day.

I know you exercise. Do you exercise every day? Yes. I always exercise. Or I exercise every day.

Mm-hmm. Every day of the week. Okay.

How about other things? Some people take a shower.

Some people take a bath. What do you like? Take a shower. You like to take a shower?

Okay. Yeah. I like to take a hot shower. Yeah. How often do you take a hot shower?

Every day. Every day. When?

In the morning? At night? In the morning and in the evening.

So you can say, "I often or I always..." I always take a shower in the evening.

How about you? I always take a shower in the morning and in the evening. Mm-hmm. Good. I asked you about taking a

shower and taking a bath. You said you like to take a shower. Let's

find out what Andreia likes. What does she like? Start with, "Do you..." Do you like

taking a shower or taking a bath? I like take a shower. I like taking a shower.

I like taking a shower. Or I like to take a

shower. I like to take a shower. I like to take, I like taking. Oh. I like to take a

shower. Okay. When do you take...? When do you take a shower?

I always take a shower in the evening. Mm-hmm.

We also have to shop for food. We need food, we need milk, we need eggs and bread.

We go grocery shopping. Grocery shopping. Right?

Grocery shopping. "Grocery" is for food. You go to the supermarket or grocery store.

In the U.S., we say grocery store... supermarket. It's the same thing.

Right? You can say "go shopping," but for this, for food, I would say "go grocery

shopping." Mm-hmm. I have to go grocery shopping. I need to go grocery shopping. Bye.

So let's ask about grocery shopping. What's the question? Let's talk

about when or how often? How often? How often. How often do you go grocery shopping?

I always go grocery shopping on Saturdays.
